How Long (B-STOCK)
Cat: PPR 019 (B-STOCK). Rel: 19 Jan 21
Brandye - "How Long" (4:04)
Queen Samantha - "Take A Chance" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:59)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

More from dusty-fingered don DJ Muro's Digura edit series. This time round, he's focused on two fabulous but often overlooked disco gems. On the A-side it's all about Brandye's punchy, funk-fuelled, disco era crossover soul cover of Ace's much-loved 1974 sing-along 'How Long' - a sublime interpretation that's easily the best version of the much-covered song we've heard. Basically, it's an energetic, impassioned version of an end-of-night classic; what's not to like? Over on the flip, Muro takes his rusty scalpel to Queen Samantha's largely instrumental, Italo-disco classic 'Take a Chance' - a spacey, synth-powered chunk of peak-time chug that has long been championed by some of the World's most knowledgeable disco DJs.

Get Down
Cat: ATH 118. Rel: 26 Jan 23
Get Down (4:25)
Can You Deal (4:41)
Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

Vivalava
Cat: AH 61. Rel: 08 Aug 22
Vivalava (DJ kawasaki Island dub mix) (4:30)
Vivalava (remaster) (4:40)
Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Tokyo-based soul group that presents danceable funky tunes and more mellow laid-back numbers, featuring strong early '70s influences. The track 'Vivalava' is taken from their fifth album Candy Dream released last year. It's veteran DJ/producer Kaoru Kawasaki's Island dub mix which takes the spotlight here, giving what already was an awesome track a nice reshape, with groove dynamics optimised for the dancefloor. The song's magnificent horns section takes centre stage much like the original, supported by Amy A's wonderful vocal. Over on the B side is a Remaster of the original.

Escape
Escape (7")
Cat: AHS 41. Rel: 08 Feb 21
Escape (Ryuhei The Man Elegant Disco re-edit) (4:18)
Escape (The Sound Of The Man re-edit) (5:08)
Review: Q.A.S.B."is a funk and soul group that formed in Tokyo in 2005 and is influenced by James Brown, Kool & The Gang, and Sly & The Family Stone. They have put out four albums before now and they can do nice smooth groovers as well as more mellow and laid back tunes for home listening. 'Escape' and 'Gotta Believe' is their latest single release from late last year now finally making its way to wax. The a-side has dazzling synths next to more organic and dusty rhythm work with funky licks leading the way and the flip is similar with its cosmic rays and nice loose limbed beats. Both have been subtly reworked here.

Will
Will (7" + insert)
Cat: SG 078. Rel: 20 Feb 24
Will (4:12)
Will (English) (4:12)
Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Japanese funk and soul ensemble with a.yu.mi. handling lead vocals, a singer celebrated for her funky style reminiscent of James Brown but captured here in a more romantic and subdued mood here. 'Will' is a new single on Soul Garden that offers up soulful and pop-leading sounds with elegant vocals and graceful grooves backed by big band horns. Interestingly, the same tune gets served up again on the flipside, only sung in English. It neither improves nor detracts from the original but proves to be an interesting experiment for that reason.

Funk Weapon
Funk Weapon (white vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies)
Cat: NYC 002. Rel: 23 May 17
Quadrant 77 - "Funk Weapon" (feat Mano Reza) (4:49)
Kozmik Funk - "Don't Funk Wid Us" (feat E live) (3:37)
Review: The many faces and fusions of James Reeno continue as NYC drop another white hot, super-limited 45". Concentrated funk is main message across both sides as James switches persona and hooks up with inspiring compadres along the way. "Funk Weapon" lives up to its name as Reeno's bubbling bass zips and zaps beneath some salubrious guitar work from Mano Reza. "Don't Funk Wid Us" sees him donning a trippier, more introspective funk as Kozmik Funk. Loaded with Oakland's finest E.Live on the pads and peppered with subtle talkbox tones, the message is clear: it's not a good idea to funk with these cats. Essential.

Ain't It Time
Cat: PP 10107. Rel: 05 Sep 17
Ain't It Time (vocal) (3:44)
Ain't It Time (instrumental) (3:50)
Review: An absolutely belting slice of disco soul from Queen Yahna on a long-awaited legitimate reissue on Patrick Adams P&P imprint. Powerful vocals, big backing harmonies, a slippery tight groove and a message of positivity running through both the vocal and the instrumental... There's a reason OG copies of these have flown like hotcakes in the past. High grade 76 business.

Ain't It Time (reissue)
Cat: PAP 71010R. Rel: 12 Sep 23
Ain't It Time (3:41)
Ain't It Time (instrumental) (3:53)
Review: This is a reissue of the classic disco track by Queen Yahna, a New York legend renowned for her part in the supergroup P&P All Stars. Originally released in 1976 on P&P Records - the legendary label run by Peter Brown and Patrick Adams - 'Ain't It Time' is an impressive belter, putting Yahna's incredible low-ranged vocals front and centre, whether by way of commanding melismatics or deft ad-libs. The instrumental, produced by the mysterious Capraquarius, hears the disco train continue to chug along, with pistoning strings, choppy drums and defiant rhythm guitar making for a propulsive backbone.
