Review: Arthur Baker is the perfect host for this new series from Demon Music which focuses on the famous extended remixes of the 80s. Each series will be a multi-disc, various artist collection that is united by one remixer, and there can be few better to kick it off than the legend that is Shep Pettibone. He was a hugely in demand studio hand who reworked multiple genres and everyone from Pet Shop Boys to Duran Duran, New Order to Level 42, George Michael to Erasure. This ambitious, widescreen collection takes in all manner of golden remixes from the world of soul, pop, synth and more.

Review: The art of the remix is no doubt indebted to NYC legends such as Shep Pettibone and Arthur Baker. It's quite fitting then that the latter should curate some of the greatest moments of the former on part two of The Classic 12 Inch Master Mixes Volume One. Pettibone's innovative approach to remixing throughout the '80s and early '90s has had a lasting impact on dance music. Featured on here are his renditions of B B & Q's '(I'm A) Dreamer' where he gets that perfect late night boogie-down vibe in effect, as well as Lionel Richie's classic 'Love Will Conquer All', perfectly streamlining the groove of The Salsoul Orchestra's 'Ooh, I Love It (Love Break)' and lending his deft hand to First Choice's anthemic 'Let No Man Put Asunder' among many others.

Review: Never Gonna Leave You is a rarity from the esteemed Brunswick label, credited to the sevensome US disco-soul-funk band active throughout the 1970s and beyond. With production by disco maestro Tony Valor, arrangements by Chi-Soul legend Eugene Record, and a new mix by the great Tom Moulton - not to mention an instrumental accompaniment from Valor's highly esteemed Tony Valor Sounds Orchestra - this 1976 classic is a cornerstone of stone-cold proto-disco, having already been reissued on CD in Japan multiple times since its creation. For its very first vinyl reissue, Never Gonna Leave You is lent the Real Gone treatment, delivering a newly r-rubbed version of the Chi-Lites' 'Stoned Out of My Mind' and delivering instant soul salvation.

Review: Stefano Tirone is one of Schema Records's main men and here he remixes his own last album Moby and Soul. He reworks it into a more dance floor friendly disco sound with bright nu-disco melodies and slinky drums. It is an homage to the original sounds of the 70s and 80s and American DJ Larry Levan and Italian Baldelli. Opener 'Body & Soul' kicks off with nice fresh and upbeat vibes and then there are summery Balearic sounds like the gorgeous 'Flying Away' and the groovy 'In The Name Of Love' (feat Laura Fedele - extended remix). 'No Meio Do Samba' then sinks into hip swinging house territory.

Review: Saada Bonaire was a German disco and world music project from the unlikely town of Bremen. Formed in 1982 by DJ Ralf Behrendt, the unique concept band was based around the super seductive vocal sounds of Stefanie Lange and Claudia Hossfeld. The musicians in the band were from local immigration centres and they signed to EMI to put out one single only, 'You Could Be More As You Are.' Dennis Bovell produced it in Kraftwerk's studio and it fused dub, African sounds, drum machines and synths into something special. The band was cancelled soon after but not before they realised a load of the tunes that had already written on this essential album.

Review: Vincent Montana Jr.'s Salsoul Orchestra was always a big band with a difference. The composer and percussionist lead them to great disco heights from 1974 and into the early 80s. They played as a backing band for many of the vocalists on the Salsoul Records label and recorded plenty of their own material including no fewer than 11 albums of soul, Philly grooves, funk and Latin percussion. There were up to 50 different members of the collective and they mixed up playful vocals, flamboyant strings and big guitar licks with big hits like 'Tangerine' and 'Salsoul Hustle' as well as laying down some great Christmas covers. Experience some of their many joys with this great anthology.

Review: Moloko Island is the debut album from Mike Salta & Mortale on Music For Dreams label and is the soundtrack to a getaway world "where good vibes can float freely" and "only fantasy set the limits." The tracks here are made up of those you may have heard on some more Balearic dance floors in the recent past as well as plenty of new ones. The open is a buoyant groove full of the joys of hope and optimism as you set out on any new adventure and from there you can sink back into 'Bon Abanut', have a gentle boogie to 'Yaeyama' and gaze up on the stars while lost in the magic of 'Bye Moloko.'

Review: When it comes to gorgeously summery blends of colourful nu-disco and sunset-ready deep house, Tim Berndhardt AKA Satin Jackets is in league of his own. That much is proved by his third album, and first for three years, Reunion. It begins with an immersive dose of sunrise deep house warmth, 'For What We Have', and ends with the piano-spotted, hands-in-the-air audio dopamine of 'Don't Worry'. In between, you'll find a sparkling, sun-bright mixture of Balearic house loveliness ('Little Aeroplanes'), head-bobbing synth-pop lusciousness ('Different Directions', with Ivy Falls), melody-rich cheeriness ('Hundred Fifty Up'), dreamy vocal nu-disco (Tailor hook-up 'Spell'), and smile-inducing, guitar-laden joyousness ('Coffee & Feels').

Review: Japan's Hiroshi Sato is well known to record obsessives who value his ability to craft pure musical nostalgia for a place you haven't even been to, He has turnabout tens of essential records, many of which are in the process of being reissued right now. His masterful jazz-funk classic Orient is one of his best known works from 1979 but All Of Me is another classic. It came much later in 1995 and is a killer pop record with glistening synths, infectious drum programming and contributions from a number of guests.

Review: Berlin-based Saturns Drive is a project by New Zealand-born DJ and producer Elfy, and is one that takes its cues from a world of early sci-fi, exotica and library music, as well as coming on thick with cosmic disco synthesizers, Italo grooves and lush arps. His latest outing 'Next Stop Nebula' also brings in slide guitars and retro digital synth sounds over the top of rhythms that owe a debt to the 90s. It's a fresh and new sound that makes for expansive, immersive listening and transports you to an imagery, sun-kissed world where gentle grooves like 'Next Stop Nebula' and 'Bride Of Frankenstein' await for a nice laid-back party.

Review: Given his multiple production aliases, love of collaboration and two acclaimed labels - the effervescent Aus and Simple Music - its surprising Will Saul has time to think, let alone lay down a DJ Kicks mix. That the resultant mix is a woozy, atmospheric, multi-textured voyage through many shades of deep house, techno and bass-flecked electronic music is less surprising. Tightly packed with exclusives - see Bicep's rave-flavoured "Nova", for starters - and with cuts from pals October, George Fitzgerald, Cottam and Axel Boman, amongst others, there's plenty for fans of Saul's ever-evolving sound to cheer. This vinyl edition packs 12 of the 24 cuts from the mix across two slabs of vinyl and you get also get a CD of the mix with Saul building a distinctly warm and wide-eyed vibe over 80 mesmerizing minutes.

Real name Roberto Zanetti, he had his first success with this album upon its original release back in 1984, namely with the song 'Don't Cry Tonight', which was repeated the following year with the success of 'Only You', a song with which became a hit throughout Europe. There's also the bright like neon wonder of 'A Love Again', the slow and romantic 'Turn Around' and the powerful dancefloor oriented closer 'Computerized Love' complete with vocoder and Fairlight CMI stabs.

The have broken out to new levels of acclaim and are sure to go even higher this September when their sophomore album Silver lands on Karma Chief Records. It's a record featuring 16 cuts of "feverish, operatic, and entirely mesmerizing harmonies" very much distill the glory of disco's brightest emotions. There is a special sense of Studio 54 era magic here with vocals that address pressing topics and draw on the group's experiences as modern femmes.

The female-fronted group bring to mind the magic of the golden era of disco - namely the Studio 54 sound - here with 16 tunes packed with mesmerising harmonies and operatic hooks. It's elegant and lavish and comes with plenty of vital perspective from the group's experiences as modern femmes, such as an urgent call to action to support the protection of women's rights and preserving the right to birth control.

'Prism' is the sort of album that transports you to another world with its lush melodies and dreamy soundscapes. Made up of Piya Malik (who is part of El Michels Affair), as well as Nya Parker Brown and Sabrina Cunningham, the band are perfect harmonisers who here nod to the sound of the late 70s. Their scoring vocals and multi-instrumentalist grooves lift you off your feet across a series of tunes that have been, on the whole, self-released. What an achievement it is too.

On this new album Let Loose for Glitterbox - a perfect home and a party they have often headlined - they delve deeper than ever before into that style. The luxuriant tunes come with plenty of grown-up orchestra additions, strings, horns, sax and smooth vocals. It's feel good, party-ready and will unite crowds of all ages with its disco-tinged sounds. So many of these are set to become classics it's pointless picking a favourite.

Packed with emotion and swelling refrains, 'Sad Cities' is a universal lamentation for failed metropoli the world over. Opener 'Forget About You' sets the tone for the pair's home-recorded masterpiece, on which the lead singer's voice takes raspy centre stage. Regret seems to be the central theme, peronalising our collective suffering:

The album is full of catchy hooks, smooth vocals, funky guitars and synths that evoke the likes of Nile Rodgers, Jungle and L'imperatrice. The lyrics are playful and sensual, exploring themes of love, lust and connection. Highlights are the slo-mo opener 'Music' with its infectious vocoder, 'Falling For You', a collaboration with MC Roki that explores deep bass-driven territory and 'Fly, Goodbye', a bittersweet and nostalgic track with sensual neon-lit aesthetics.

Review: As the '70s dawned and Motown relocated to the West Coast, the era of their honey-toned '60s girl groups came to a resounding halt. The Sisters Love were the antithesis of the traditional Motown group and came to the label from A&M, armed with a lot of funk, sass and attitude.

Paired with some of Motown's finest writers and producers - Hal Davis, Gloria Jones, Pamela Sawyer, Paul Riser and Willie Hutch - they got off to a rousing start with the gritty "Mr. Fix-It Man" and went into high gear for the UK only release "I'm Learning To Trust My Man".

Motown had them playing arenas with The Jackson Five (probably not their smartest move!), issued the odd single and scheduled more but Sisters Love's anticipated breakthrough didn't happen.

In 1980 New York DJ Danny Krivit pressed up an extended eight-minute re-edit of "Give Me Your Love", an old B-side from a 1973 single! That song was somewhat of an underground classic but the Krivit mix brought in a whole new legion of fans amongst the rare groove crowd, both in the US and the UK.

Sisters Love had long been rumored to have recorded a complete album for the Motown subsidiary MoWest. Get On Down Records combed the vaults with Motown's help and the result is the original 10 cut album, plus a bonus cut, "Give Me Your Love."

Review: Reissue of New York City based disco funk band Skyy's 1981 album on BMG. Some of you may know their hits from the late '80s such as 'Start of a Romance' or 'Real Love' but Skyy Line, their fourth long-player, featured what's probably their finest moment and their very first successful track - 'Call Me'. Originally released on the legendary Salsoul Recordings, it was produced by Brass Construction's Randy Mueller who helped them find their sound, using a more guitar-centered approach, with the three voices of the Dunning sisters for an overall more driven and funkier sound.

Review: Since taking up music production following a career-ending football injury, 20-something Leeds lad Reuben Vaun Smith has delivered two tropical-tinged, Balearic-inspired albums for Soundway. On his third full-length (his first for long-serving Californian label Ubiquity Records), the Yorkshireman refocuses a little more on the dancefloor, offering up a range of attractive cuts that combine his love of mid-tempo, dubbed-out disco with African, Latin and Middle Eastern vocals, rhythms and instrumentation - as well as a heavy dose of psychedelic sounds and trippy effects. It's a smart shift that's undoubtedly paid dividends, with our picks of a very strong bunch including 'Beams', the dreamy 'Mali' (a track inspired by that country's vibrant musical culture), and the life-affirming dancefloor shuffle of 'The Waxing Gibbous Moon'.

Review: Smoove's latest LP, the retro-modern funk take that is First Class, is primed for a spacious yet packed dancefloor. Smoove's deft emulatory production skills are once again put on full display, collecting vocal samples and original backing tracks from genres like funk, jazz, soul and hip-hop to produce something to the tune of 15 or so remixes. Bustling interpretations of Kraak & Smaak, Una Mas Trio, and Brenda Boykin render this a headsy yet unpretentious dance dazzler.

Of the title, Daniel explained it's an actual question proposed to him which has become a mantra of sorts, with the album created as a way to imagine possible musical responses to her question. Created during Covid lockdowns, Daniel recruited a virtual disco band from friends across the world and traversing many genres such as disco, minimalism, ambient, shoegaze and jazz, then pieced together in his Baltimore studio. Guests include Turkish arranger Ulas Kurugullu, Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xu, Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes), Brooklyn techno artist Rose E Kross and Daniel Clark.

Beautiful is an apt title, too, because that describes their particular take on disco sounds with plenty of lush synth lines and sophisticated melodies all accompanied by a range of influences from jazz to Afro to funk. Some killer basslines define the likes of 'A Onda' and guests heighten grooves like the summery and laidback 'Out Of Touch' (feat Kit Sebastian) and shimmering broken beats of 'Lightweight' (feat Jenny Penkin).

No messing around, just straight up disco house music. Review: William Basinski and Preston Wendel offered something a little different when they commended their Sparkle Division project in 2020. Rather than Basinski's best-known ambience and minimalism, this project deals in a luxuriant lounge funk shot through with surrealism and strapped to imagined scenarios. On Foxy, the scene is set as an exclusive Hollywood cocktail party in the late 60s with a particularly spicy punch going round. The music doesn't attempt to ape a 60s sounds like you would expect, but instead deals in varied funk-fuelled grooves which come on like library music having been dipped in aforementioned lysergic party juice. It's smooth and salty in equal amounts, and just weird enough to keep you curious as the narrative of the album unravels and we wind up at some surprisingly nimble d&b programming to see the story out.

Review: House music exploded in the UK in 1987 and continued to blow up in the ensuing summers. But with all the high energy parties and ever more visceral rave sounds, people needed a break, and so it was that in February of 1990 the KLF invented new slowed down after-sounds on their Chill Out mix. This collection gathers best sub 100bpm cuts form that time, as assembled by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley. Fun fact - the artwork for the LP is a picture from the new book on acid house by photographer Dave Swindells which is well worth copping if you can.

They discovered The Star Beams when one of their tracks was on a Disco Calypso compilation, then went on a mission to track down the original anymore material from the band, who turned out to be based in South Africa instead of the Carribean. The resulting record is a real gem - disco, funk and jazz all get chewed up and spat out across four fantastically timeless cuts of dance floor dynamite. "Disco Stomp" in particular you might already know as Theo Parrish has been dropping in his sets for time.

Review: Four new originals from French Berlin-based singer and JD Stella Zekri, whose low-range, buzzing vocals are lent happily to a selection of cloudy electronic Latin beats. Produced and co-written by Ed Longo, it draws heavily on the post-zouk and disco styles endemic to the 80s French underground; our choice bit is the offbeat boogizm heard on the sonic ponderance: 'Pourquoi (Why)'.

It debuted last year with a superb full-length and now is already back with a seance on Gilles's Brownswood label. 'STR4TASFEAR' is a mix of songs, grooves and melodies from the Brit funk world that the two collaborators emerged from. It finds them working with some legends of the scene from neo-soul Godfather Omar to Emma-Jean Thackray, Brighton duo Anushka and Floridian trumpeter/vocalist Theo Croker. A superb collection of timeless sounds, then.

Review: Brownswood Recordings have become something of a meme, cementing their very distinct jazz sound with every new release. Str4ta's 'Str4tasfear' is the latest LP from the project (which consists of Gilles Peterson and Jean Paul Maunick), painting a vague party-jazz homage to the dawn of the Brit-funk era, but they're not being too succinct about any overarching message beyond that. The songs here are danceable, and that's their main focus. 'Lazy Days' is the drawer-inner - with Emma-Jean Thackray's singing lulling us into a state of preferring not to go to work - while 'Night Flight' opens the bay doors into an instrumental space lounge. All sizzlers.

Review: The second full-length from Parisian dance producer Diogo Strausz, whose grasp on the nascent wave of samba-infused house, funk and Afrobeat flaunts a conspicuous expertise. Drawing on the titular idea of 'samba from outer space' - where dance music is a wordless, universal language that quantizes people's experience and flushes them of their iniquities - Strausz's point is that dance music pre-dates electronica and that, looked at it in a certain way, all dance music is simply cosmic samba. Whether or not you agree, this is an effortlessly enchanting full-length, feal to every samba hallmark from syncopated clave to two-tone piano riffs, albeit also backed up by robotic samples and FM ows.

Joining forces with producers James Bedford and Roy Ayers, she recorded 1981 debut album "Give Me Your Love", a well regarded but largely overlooked set that has since become a sought-after item amongst soul collectors. This Expansion reissue presents the album on vinyl for the first time in two decades. As with many soul albums of the period, it sashays between jazz-funk, boogie and heartfelt slow jams, contrasting memorable dancefloor workouts (see stone cold classic "Give Me Your Love" and a stellar cover of Roy Ayers favourite "Searchin") with more saccharine, loved-up fare.

It does feature Summer's most famous track but it does reach plenty of brilliant synth-disco highs all the same. It is said that Summer was done with disco when she wrote this and that it was a more rock-inspired record co-written and produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, but drop these in the club and they will cause carnage. The album peaked at 13 on the Billboard Chart and the title cut was number 3 on the singles chart for a while, though none of the tracks cracked the UK charts.

Review: This is a vinyl reissue of the 1989 album Another Place And Time by Donna Summer, the legendary American singer and songwriter, and co-pioneer of Hi-NRG disco (for those not in the know) with Giorgio Moroder. Coming fresh with a completely new novelty album cover, it's got just 10 tracks of pop, disco and dance, reflecting the late 80s assembly-line approach to releasing such music . Summer was extending one foot to balladry by this time, with the hit singles 'This Time I Know It's For Real' and 'I Don't Wanna Get Hurt' going for the more heartfelt power-chordism shot for by solo artists releasing music closer to the Millennium. Nonetheless, this is still quintessential Summer.

Review: Crayons is the seventh studio album by Donna Summer. First released in 2008 for an audience who were then largely over disco yet still hungry for Summer's 'queen' image, the album suitably adopted a clean and pristine noughties pop glitz, apt for the demands of the day. With standouts such as 'Stamp Your Feet', many of the tracks abandoned disco entirely for a more freestyle or electronic dance emotion. A euphoric comeback, which now hears and sees a vinyl reissue.

Review: Such is the authenticity of Super DB's sound that you'd be forgiven for thinking that this album was not in fact brand-new, but rather a long-lost European LP from 1984. Their sound is synth-heavy, colourful and analogue-rich, with vocals reminiscent of Steely Dan rising above a musical bed full of nods to 80s synth-pop, Italo-disco, NYC boogie and sax-sporting AM radio soft rock of the period. Super DB are not American (they're English and based somewhere on the South Coast) but you'd never know - it's like you're listening to something on Californian AM radio 40 years ago. That's not a criticism though, because Downtown is a genuinely entertaining and expertly executed album.

Review: It's been a while since we heard from neo-soul favourite Tom Misch, so we're happy to welcome him back on hearing of his latest release under the name Supershy, described as his 'electronic' alter-ego. Drawing from classic disco, contemporary house, and crate-digger soul, this debut mixtape hears Misch deliver ten club-ready numbers brushing up against disco house, French-touch, acid and more - all, as ever, underpinned with his unmistakably unique Misch-family musicality.

Review: What does it mean to be timeless in an age of shallow immediacy? In a world where instant virality is hailed as the supreme goal, the most radical act of subversion might be creating something built to bang in a soundsystem eternity. The latest from Sweatson Klank (FKA Take) aims to achieve that rare posterity, inviting an all-night party of boogie funk, 80s modern soul, Japanese city pop, Balearic disco, AOR, and 90s house. A 13-track alchemical yield of "beatstrumental" productions and highbrow electronica fruits, this album largely centres on Klank's exploration of what truly makes a timeless album timeless; that glimmer, or hook, that causes a song or album to repeat, again and again, in the listener's mind. Not one for a shallow listener, A Free Mind is a sprawling stylistical-miracle.

Review: System Olympia has been back and digging in the archives for this superb new and limited album, the New Erotica Collection (Durante Edition). It features some of their past tunes that have been sold out in quick fashion because of limited runs and others that have actually never before been available on vinyl. As you will know, or as you will find out, these are hallucinogenic tunes with mixes of disco, new wave, 80s pop, instrumental and nu-disco influences and each of them will light up any dancefloor with plenty of provocative and erotic undertones - just look at the cover!

Review: The Mellophonia label offshoot Fusion Sequence won us over with its well-presented and great-sounding first EP, and now a quick follow-up does the same. This one is another various artists affair that starts with some nice futuristic robot disco from Vanity Project. There is more organic and lush Balearic from Bobby Bricks and Pacific Coliseum follows that spine-tingling Ibiza sunset vibe. On the flip side, there is everything from late-night electronic house to lazy disco via Sorcerer's blissed out 'Just For Love' which would entrance any dance floor. There's as much quality as there is variation on this one, which makes it a useful EP indeed.
