  1. Who, What, Where, When & Why (Disco version) (5:10)
  2. No Promises (Disco version) (6:46)
Review: Best Records do it again, dusting down a searing slice of robo-funk from the early 80s that will pop your lock every which way. B Funk was a one-off project from Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco, best known for their incredible work as Klein & MBO. They released the "Magic Spell" album in 1983, and it was loaded with richly produced Italo disco and proto house sounds - there's a good reason the original release has been fetching such crazy prices on the second hand market. Now Best have cherry picked two of the finest cuts from the album, sought out the extended disco versions from Carrasco's vaults, and given them a glorious new pressing.

  2. Raw Slavs - "Born In R" (6:24)
  3. Moodena & Sartorial - "Got That Feeling" (6:07)
  4. Hotmood - "700 Copies" (6:45)
Review: Earlier in the year, Samosa Records launched the "Funk Purpose" series via a multi-artist collection of top-notch edits. Volume two will be released in several parts, with this rock solid EP the first to drop. Glaswegian scalpel fiend Al Kent kicks things off with "Where", a superb traditionalist rearrangement of a soaring, orchestrated disco-funk cut that has the potential to become a screaming, soul-fired anthem this summer. Raw Slavs opt for a loose and groovy, slightly housed-up vibe on their succulent disco re-edit, "Born In R", before the Tropical Disco Records crew takes on side B. Moodena and Sartorial's "Got That Feeling" is a bumpin' disco-house revision of a soulful disco groover, while Hotmood's "700 Copies" is a deep, bass-heavy jaunt through cowbell-laden jazz-funk/house fusion.

  1. Work It Out (7:21)
  2. Work It Out (dub) (6:12)
  3. Til I Found You (6:10)
  4. Til I Found You (dub) (5:40)
Review: For the last 18 months disco and boogie legend Leroy Burgess - owner of the most distinctive voice in the game - has been touring Europe with a band of Lyon-based musicians known as Saving Coco. It makes sense, then, that he would eventually go into the studio with them to record some new material. The results are impressive. The jaunty, Clavinet-heavy brilliance of "Work It Out" is reminiscent of some of Burgess' best boogie-era work with The Fantastic Aleems and fittingly comes accompanied by a Dub mix rich in piano and synth solos. "Til I Found You" is a slap bass-propelled exercise in good grooves and even better vocals. It, too, is backed by a stripped back but musically expansive Dub mix.

  2. Mix & Fairbanks - "Shergar's Revenge" (5:58)
  3. Shee - "Me, You, Us" (6:53)
  4. Purple Ice - "Adeus" (7:02)
Review: According to the hype sheet we have to hand, the "Home Turf EP" is House of Disco's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. There's plenty to get the juices flowing throughout, from the bounding bounciness of LPM's rap-sampling disco-house cut "Get With It", to the impeccably warm and sun-kissed jazz-house vibes of Purple Ice's "Adeus". In between you'll find the rolling, synth-heavy warmth of Mix & Fairbanks' deliciously loved-up "Shergar's Revenge" and "Me, You, Us" by Shee, a chunky sample-house number full of swirling strings, looped guitar riffs, hazy chords and righteous spoken word samples.

  4. M&M Vs Andrei Swipe - "Analog Express" (Don Carlos remix) (7:29)
Review: There's an undeniable air of quality that lingers over the 12"s emerging on 14th Level Of Paradise, the mysterious label presenting originals, edits and repressed tracks for true house devotees. First up is a little known track from Sasha Makin and Suntetic, given a shimmering polish by Don Carlos and Steven Perri to become a heavy funking masterpiece, before Joe Claussell drops in a percussive dub delight on Monday Michiru's "Higher". On the flip, Vincent Inc and LA get things pumping with the slow but chunky, jazz-licked "Red Room", before Carlos returns for another deep house reverie as he remixes M&M and Andrei Swipe's "Analog Express".

  3. Se Ritornerai (Vocoder version) (9:37)
Review: Three cosmic disco charmers from Italian stallion Giordani (who you may recognise as one half of Marvin & Guy). "Non Me Lo So Spiegare" is a pulsating piece of instrumental emotive laced with a striking synth riff while the other two tracks let the vocoder take the lead. "Rolandia" paints a lamenting vocal over an insistent arpeggio while "Se Ritornerai" takes us deep into synthwave territory. Pristine synths, emotional vocals and great moments of space, it's an epic finale to an exceptional EP.

  3. Neapolitan Soul - "Welcome To The Dub" (11:44)
  4. Raquel Rodriguez - "We Go Together" (Joey Negro club mix) (6:21)
Review: Over the years, Z Records' "Attack The Dancefloor" series has proved to be a serious source of tried-and-tested club cuts in a disco-centric style. Volume 13 is full to bursting with must-have tracks too. Label boss Dave Lee sets the tone, donning his famous Joey Negro alias to deliver a sumptuously summery "Disco Blend" of Mistura's Angela Johnson-voiced "Do You Love Me?" before Opolopo steals the show by turning Sylvester's surging disco anthem "I Need You" into a synth-sporting chunk of revivalist disco-boogie. Neapolitan Soul's "Welcome To The Dub" is a punchy chunk of disco-house laden in percussion and cute instrumental touches, while Lee's Joey Negro Club mix of Raquel Rodriguez's "We Go Together" is a sweet and seductive fusion of jazz-funk instrumentation and celebratory disco grunt.

Review: London's Tropical Disco are back with their eleventh edition of superb edits. All re-spliced and remixed with precision and above all - respectf! First up is label boss Tim Burnett aka Moodena who reuses a rather familiar hook on the funked-up brass section of "The Chase", followed by the lo-slung and sultry late night business of "Addicted To You" by Alex Satrorial on the A side. On the flip, we have got Parisian Chevals (Masterworks/Hotwax) going deep on the sensual boogie-down groove of "Saturn In Tropical" followed by an oldie but a goodie in the form of Gledd & The Funk District's "Late At Night".

Review: Tropical Disco are back with Volume 13, unveiling four cuts of disco-house dancefloor shakers on the ever-burgeoning imprint. As a deep, party starting package for jazzed out, groove loving freaks, this one is essential! On the A side label boss Moodena steps up with the funky and lo-slung party starter "Do What You Wanna Do" which is perfect to set the mood, followed by co-head Sartorial on the sultry and hypnotic disco loops of "Kool Geeza". Review: Some serious no-nonsense house grooves for all true-school DJs to cop, dug out from the annals of club music history. Things kick off good and proper with Joey Negro's insanely powerful "Dub Groove" mix of Lenny Fontana's "A Place Called Heaven". Negro's on the buttons once again with the classic, pumping "Rhodes Dub" of "You Make Me Whole" by Jay Denes and Ada Dyer. On the flip, Julian Sanza drops the squelchy boogie inflected "To Love" before the record ends on a serious bang with the dream team of Frankie Knuckles, Satoshi Tomiie and Andrea Mendez's "Bring Me Love (Eventual Dub)". This is as actual house as actual house can get - the real deal, crystalised in four evergreen gems pressed on one handy record.

Review: The latest contemporary mix-master to get his hands on the West End catalogue is Dr Packer, an Aussie re-editor-turned-producer whose recent outings on Glitterbox have made him an in-demand artist. He kicks things off by delivering a "multi-track" mix of Raw Silk boogie classic "Do It To The Music" that offers a superb mix of beefed-up synth-bass, echoing vocal snippets, stripped-down breakdowns and New York proto-house style production trickery. Over on side B he tightens up and funks up Barbara Mason's similarly synth-heavy electrofunk classic "Another Man" - a song about a woman losing her man to, you guessed it, another fella - before subtly tooling up and extending Shirley Lites' peerless "Heat You Up (Melt You Down)".

  4. Phazed Groove - "Sunshine" (5:16)
Review: Sartorial and Moodena's Tropical Disco imprint has become a go-to label for discerning house and disco lovers around the world to devour. On their label's 12th edition, main man Sartorial kicks things off with the thumping, Latin-inflected summer scorcher "Fat Freddy's Party", co-head Moodena takes charge of the second track, bringing a softer sound palette full of '80s energy, blessed keys, signature feisty horns and nifty filter sweeps on "No More Sushi". The enigmatic Phazed Groove takes over the B side with stylish night moves, dishing up a respectful edit of a timeless classic on "Sweet Talker" and some sultry deepness on the familiar deep house groove of "Sunshine".

  2. Moodena - "Jammin" (6:39)
  3. Simon Kennedy - "Back To Soul" (6:27)
  4. Hotmood - "Everybody" (5:56)
Review: By now we should know what to expect from Tropical Records, namely beefed-up, house style re-edits of disco and boogie tracks that tend towards the hot, sticky and humid. Sartorial kicks things off this time round via the swirling, Latin style disco-bounce of "Warping" - all low-slung bass, new house beats, big orchestration and snaking sax solos - before Moodena straightens out and tools up a hybrid jazz-funk/disco jam that boasts some seriously exotic guitar solos and jammed-out electric piano parts. Simon Kennedy's contribution, "Back To Soul", is a bumpy and bouncy take on a fine disco soul classic, while Hotmood's "Everybody" is a sweaty, house style revision of a P-funk flavoured boogie number.

Review: The bushy-tailed bandits strike again! This time they're hitting with some serious Latin fire as both sides look towards central America for source inspiration. "Track One" takes an upbeat Joe Cuba classic and slows it down to let us really chew into the warm, pumping groove. Trust us, one listen to this and you'll never want to go back to Georgia either! "Track Two" meanwhile flips the disco/funk Joe Bataan classic "Mestizo" with a little uptempo twist and some precision-placed disco bubbles. Go nuts and add this to your stash.

And as we hit number 20 in their series of sassy party versions, we're reminded there's a lot to shake to. "Track One" shakes with a slight carnival theme thanks to its punchy horns before dropping into swooning funk guitars. "Track Two" shakes with much more disco deviance thanks to its stomping thumping Hi-NRG kicks, gutsy vocal loop and lolloping slap bass. It pops. But ssshhhhh.... some squirrels are best kept secret.

  3. Hold On (single version) (3:46)
Review: First released in 1987, Stephane Severac's sun-kissed European pop gem "Hold On" has long been regarded as something of an under-appreciated classic by those DJs of a Balearic persuasion. This new edition replicates the track listing of the original 12", opening with the evocative extended version. This builds in stages, opening with Chic inspired guitars and dreamy synth chords before introducing a poolside-friendly groove, snaking saxophone solos and Severac's heavily accented vocal. Over on side B you'll find the shorter "Single Version" - less sax, but just as much eyes-closed vocal action from Severac - and "Dreams", a bonus cut that sounds like his take on Duran Duran's mid-'80s big studio synth-pop sound.

Cat: SSSS 4. Rel: 25 Sep 19
  1. Bert’s Groove (7:24)
  2. Daisy’s Dance (6:53)
Review: The fourth limited edition missive on Denis Sulta's hyped Sultra Selects Silver Service series (try saying that while drunk) comes from Dan Shake, a producer whose blends of classic grooves and contemporary club nous rarely disappoint. The orange vinyl record's A-side, "Berts Groove", is a rushing slab of rubbery disco-house brilliance - a filter-sporting loop jam that tools up a lesser-known disco cut and is guaranteed to put goofy grins on the faces of all those that hear it. Flipside "Daisy's Dance" continues in a similar vein, with looped disco orchestration and filter trickery employed to create a series of build-and-release moments that are almost overwhelming in their positive intensity. In other words, Shake has served up two more peak-time anthems that will do the business every time they're played.

First up is one of Cameroon's funkiest exports, Pasteur Lappe, whose cosmically charged 1979 Disques Esperance release "Na Real Sekele Fo Ya" gets a cheeky re-jig from Shan. Flip for a powerful soul twist from Glowing Palms as they get busy on the bassline and middle eight section of another Disques Esprance artist Jo Bisso. Editor Andi Handley gets things going via the blissful bubbles of "Up and Down", where sustained synthesizer chords and meandering melodies stretch out across a sparse electronic rhythm, before diving even deeper into delay-laden slow-motion synth-pop pastures on the tactile and emotive drowsiness of "Stop Me". Best of all, though, is extended flipside edit "What Are You Fighting For", a typically dubby and on-point revision of an arpeggio-driven, guitar-laden alternative pop/post-punk cut by Marianne Faithfull.

Review: Since first pitching up on Disco Halal two years ago, Simple Symmetry has released some of their most cosmic and psychedelic cuts on Moscoman's distinctive imprint. They're at it again here. Check the high-grade arpeggio-driven sleaziness of "Gilgamesh", where hallucinatory electronics, exotic lead lines and twisted vocal samples rise above unfussy beats and an impressively driving bassline. Further examples of dazed dancefloor psychedelia follow, with the Turkish pysch/cosmic disco pulse of "Fight" ushering in the raw and intoxicating Middle Eastern throb of "Enkidu". To round off the EP, Adam Port provides a slightly chunkier re-edit that cannily makes the most of the track's squelchy bassline and eyes-closed psychedelic guitar solos.

Review: Fire in the hole! Quite literally; "Nar" is Arabic for fire and it's been one of the hottest dubs in the Lipsky brothers' Simple Symmetry sets for quite some time. Jaunty, free-footed, laced with an intoxicating eastern riff and a springy 80s bassline, it has hips slinking from 0-60 in less than seconds. So do the remixes: Autarkik gives it an "Age Of Love" style trancey slither while Inigo Vontier reboosts the percussive element for a much heavier hypnotic experience. Feeling fired up yet?

  2. Skyy - "Here's To You" (Moplen Boogie Down dub) (7:53)
  3. The Salsoul Orchestra - "Ohh I Love It (Love Break)" (Moplen remix) (7:44)
Review: Plenty of the old classics can benefit from a little modern touch up, and that's the story on this latest offering from Salsoul, who once again open their vaults. Italian maestro Moplen is given free rein and turns his hand to Skyy - "Here's To You", firstly with a boogie driven rework that is all about an irresistibly knotted bassline. The dub version places even more focus on it, and on the flip The Salsoul Orchestra - "Ohh I Love It (Love Break)" gets teased out to perfection. The classic vocal is left in place while the sensuous bass, gliding hits and rousing strings will make their way deep into your affections.

  2. Hotmood - "Fake DJs" (6:11)
  3. Andy Buchan - "Dope D'Man" (5:50)
  4. Dave Gerrard - "Turn It Loose" (5:23)
Review: The latest missive from Fingerman's Wax Digits imprint - the occasional vinyl offshoot of the digital-only Hot Digits label - is something of an all-star affair. It features contributions from some of the best-known talents in the contemporary re-edit scene, with solid results. Fingerman and Slync kick things off with "Saft Junk", a cheery, Chic style slab of summer disco goodness, before Hotmood takes aim at "Fake D.Js" via bumpin' grooves, fluttering flutes and swirling orchestration. Andy Buchan's "Dope D'Man" is a slap-bass-sporting nu-disco jam that joins the dots between King Bee's "Back By Dope Demand" and the original disco record it sampled, while "Turn It Loose" is a relaxed shuffle through laid back and loved-up funk grooves.

  4. Nightdrive - "Je T Aime" (5:33)
Review: St. Petersburg-based imprint Soviett is rather restrained when it comes to releasing music on wax, with this tidy EP marking only their third vinyl excursion in as many years. It is, though, packed with quietly impressive treats. Label co-founder Ivan Starzev kicks things off via the woozy melodies, dreamy chords and Pet Shop Boys circa "Behaviour" grooves of "Waiting", before Claes Rosen ups the tempo a little via the liquid deep house bounce of the undeniably picturesque "Cumulus". Over on side B, Hideo Kobayashi wraps warm and drowsy chords and trippy acid lines around a chunky, dub-fired deep house groove on "Perfect Perception", while Nightdrive joins the dots between analogue disco, razor-sharp synth pop and hazy deep house on tasty closing cut "Je T Aime".

  1. More... I Like It (4:48)
  2. Twenty Seven (4:03)
  3. More... I Like It (instrumental) (5:01)
Review: REPRESS ALERT! Best Record Italy take the time machine all the way back to 1979 to revisit the wonderful Italo-Disco delights of Adolf Stern, whose "More... I Like It" represents the strangest end of the genre as it was taking shape. With heavily processed vocals injecting some serious strangeness into the chirpy disco backdrop, it's the kind of track to turn heads without a doubt. "Twenty Seven" on the B-side is equally magical in its capturing of the era, with the more obvious surface elements underpinned by a truly intoxicating line in synth arpeggios. Once again Best comes up trumps refreshing the history of Italian music of all shapes and sizes.

  1. Under Cover Lover (4:58)
  2. Under Cover Lover (instrumental) (4:59)
Review: Kalita Records has thus far proved adept at sniffing out obscure, overlooked classics and reissuing them. Their latest "flip" is as rare, little known and hard-to-find as they come: a one-shot 1985 Caribbean boogie cut from Bahamian musicians Stirling March (now a minister and gospel singer) and bassist Rocky Rolle. "Under Cover Lover" is bright, breezy and sun-kissed, with jaunty synthesizer lead lines and hammered-out piano parts dancing above a tasty groove that fully showcases Rolle's boogie bass skills. Stirling March's lead vocal is superb too, with the Bahamian slickly delivering the loved-up lyrics with aplomb. The flipside "Instrumental" version is typical of New York style boogie dubs of the period, with more attention on the drums, bassline and ricocheting vocal snippets.
