It finds the top selling artist David Penn offering up a big remix of Michael Gray & Jon Pearn aka Sex-O-Sonique's 'I Thought I Was You' in much the same way he has done with several other big hits before now. "Totem" is an epic track that rolls around in the muck somewhere between shoegaze extravagance, post-rock heaviness and psyched-out electronics. The "Swamp Crawl" version of the track keeps the guitars bedded deep within the mix, but there's space for more expressive synth work. Hardway Brothers take the track on a similarly rockist journey, but take their time building up to a climax. Otologic wrap things up with a deadly dub that will have low tempo trippers rubbing their hands with delight.

Review: The star-studded Sai Galaxy project returns, bringing together West African legends Steve Monite and Rob with multi-instrumentalist Simon Durrington, guitar maestro Alfred Bannerman, and Egypt 80 trumpet player Bade, for a second EP of vital Afro-disco and soul. Following up 2020's 'Get It As You Move' EP, the likes of 'Sometimes It Rains', the homonymous 'Okere', the truth-to-power 'Rich Man, Poor Man', and the live and swinging coda 'Hold Me Tonight' paint a multifaceted picture of a trio, equally as concerned with groove delivery as they are with narrative storytelling. It's built around a soaring female vocal that brings an angelic edge to the far-sighted 80s chords and cold, crashing machine drum sounds. As often is the way with this label, this mighty original comes with Flemming Dalum remixes that bulk it up for modern dancefloors with a chugging and irresistible sense of ALFOS funk and then ups the synth energy on a more poppy version to close.

Review: Unidisc's 40th anniversary series, which offers fresh editions of sought-after disco and boogie hits, each accompanied by a new remix, continues. This time, they've decided to revisit Saturday Night Band's 'Come On Dance, Dance', which first surfaced on legendary NYC label Prelude way back in 1978. The chosen remixer this time round is Z Records chief Dave Lee, in pure 'Remixed With Love' mode. His EP-opening 'Disco Mix' is a genuine bomb that expertly rearranges and re-EQs the Saturday Night Band's original mix - with the odd dash of delay here and there - in true Tom Moulton style. He also delivers an excitable, largely beat-free 'Reprise' mix and a tidy, dancefloor dub style 'Instrumental'. A lightly edited take on the 1978 original mix completes an excellent package.

Review: A superb 12" slab of rare South London British jazz funk, originally released in the UK in 1984 by Jamaican-born producer Tony Williams, the man behind the seminal Funk Masters' jazz-funk masterpiece, 'Love Money'. Now heard again, 'Keep On Searching For Love' is emblematic of London's 80s dub disco sound, with its every constituent part recorded, arranged and processed to the discotheque-addict's letter. Gated snares and acapella croons abound, with the uplifting vocals of Linda Taylor shining as brilliantly as star at the peak of its supernova. The flipside instrumental, 'Eastern Lady', comes complete with hypnotic bassline, drum machines, synths and stabbing horn lines; both tracks have been lovingly remastered from tape and now come exquisitely repackaged for you to enjoy. Gotta keep on!

Review: Here's something to get excited about - an unearthed, previously unreleased recording from Philadelphia International group Silk (best known for their soul smash 'I Can't Stop (Turning on You)', with modern club interpretations supplied by housed-up re-edit maestro Late Nite Tuff Guy. The band's original mix, which opens side B, is a gloriously joyful and breezy affair all told, with the group singing in perfect harmony atop a cheery backing track rich in piano riffs, glistening guitars, and a killer groove. Late Nite Tuff Guy delivers two tweaks: an A-side 'Disco Dub' that brilliantly reframes the track as a non-stop nu-disco party anthem that cannily combines the band's original vocals and instrumentation with a far chunkier, weightier, house club-friendly beat, and a suitably similar 'Short Edit' for those who want to get to the point a bit quicker.

The marvelous 'Ocean Dreams' brings upbeat sounds and smart arrangements that are run through with exotic melodies and last of all is a blissed-out instrumental mix of 'Zappelnder Hindu.'

Review: Not to be confused with the Fresh Band boogie classic of the same name - which, strangely enough, was also released in 1984 - Carl Smith's 'Come Back Lover' is something of a hard-to-find rarity that thoroughly deserves this reissue. Written, produced and arranged by Smith, who also delivers the effortlessly soulful lead vocal, the track is an excellent example of the synth-powered, funk-fuelled NYC boogie sound pushed by DJs like Larry Levan in New York City in the early-to-mid 1980s. The bassline, in particular, is brilliant, and genuinely drives the track forward. Just as the original 1984 release did, this reissue features both the original version and the dub-style 'Club Mix', which in true Levan style includes a delay-laden drums-and-vocal breakdown midway through.

Review: Beyond Paradise releases tend to achieve that most difficult of tricks, ticking both danceable and laid-back boxes, but when you see the pedigree of names they've got on board it's no surprise they're able to. Solid State aka Richard Hardcastle has a history which stretches back to Sheffield's post-punk scene and releases on 90s tech/deep house label Toko, not to mention running the All Out War and Society labels. There's more than a hint of the Steel City's industrial funk/pre-house sounds in his two tracks, be that the muted nightdrive that is 'Seven More Minutes Of Funk' or the wonderstruck new beater 'Rhodes To Nowhere'. Richard Sen joins The Veteran Delinquents on the B-side, the former laying down a carpet of impeccably classy electro grooves, the latter going for a slightly more sinister remix of the A1, all arpeggiated neon rainshowers and chiptuney waves of synth respectively.

Review: Speakwave is a lesser-spotted alias from Frenchman Dynarec, who has been exploring the outer edges of electro on various superb labels for years. Here he builds on his famously melodic sound across a trio of cosmic cuts. 'Cartographic Venture' kicks off and is a ten-minute odyssey with cold melodies and tinny drums that have a retro-future feel. Distant vocals add an extra edge to 'Coming On Monday' which has wispy sci-fi lines darting about over more cold drums. 'Exposition To Revolution' closes out with an introspective feel but a widescreen sound that is clean and has lovely spiraling skyward melodies.

Review: There is a very loveable retro soul feel to this new package of trad house sounds from Steal Vybe & Lamone. It takes the form of a The Heatwave classic that has been all remade and flipped into a slightly more contemporary cut but one that will still make a big mark on the old school crew.
