Who, What, Where, When & Why
Cat: BST X057. Rel: 13 May 19
Who, What, Where, When & Why (Disco version) (5:10)
No Promises (Disco version) (6:46)
Review: Best Records do it again, dusting down a searing slice of robo-funk from the early 80s that will pop your lock every which way. B Funk was a one-off project from Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco, best known for their incredible work as Klein & MBO. They released the "Magic Spell" album in 1983, and it was loaded with richly produced Italo disco and proto house sounds - there's a good reason the original release has been fetching such crazy prices on the second hand market. Now Best have cherry picked two of the finest cuts from the album, sought out the extended disco versions from Carrasco's vaults, and given them a glorious new pressing.

Habibi (reissue)
Cat: BSTX 088. Rel: 10 Nov 22
Habibi (vocal version) (5:42)
Habibi (Samba instrumental) (5:59)
Review: Sahara Band's 'Habibi' is an Italo-disco classic from 1983. It was reissued digitally once in 2017 but now finally makes a welcome return to wax. An original copy will cost you a fair few quid on the second-hand market so do not sleep on this one as it is incredible Egyptian-influenced Italo with Arabic vocals. It has been remade by other artists over the years but this version remains the best with its cultural sounds and worldly grooves set to bring greatness to any set.

Party Freaks/Dance Together
Party Freaks/Dance Together (12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: BST X031. Rel: 16 Apr 18
Party Freaks (4:35)
Dance Together (4:05)
Review: Alan Shelly was an intermittent feature in the late 60s and early 70s soul and funk scene, but his one-off 7" Party Freaks / Dance Together released in Italy in 1975 remains a treasured gem for those who crave the most potent secret weapons for their record crates. Of course, Best Italy are no slouches when it comes to such records and they have dutifully snapped up the original masters of these sought after jams and given the full, uncut mixes a proper, beautifully remastered airing on 12". "Party Freaks" has a raucous, West African flavour to it that can't fail to set the crowd alight, while "Dance Together" takes things in a looser, jammed out direction - both tracks are pure fire, and it's a damn good thing Best have dusted them down.

Disco Shitan
Cat: BSTX 005. Rel: 01 Feb 16
Disco Shitan (long version) (5:08)
Shitan (part 1) (3:09)
Shitan (part 2) (4:03)
Review: A near-mythical release from the Italian composer/bassist/karate don Pino Presti, Shitan was a one-off project in 1977. Slow, pensive, full of tension and loaded with detailed cinematic elements, it still sounds forward-thinking today. No surprises that the original 12"s regularly go for hundreds. Madly the long version never made it to the original 12" so this is the first time the full five minute version has been available. As if a repress wasn't enough reason to jump on this!

Come Back Lover
Cat: BTBS 12002. Rel: 27 Apr 23
Come Back Lover (3:58)
Come Back Lover (club mix) (4:42)
Review: Not to be confused with the Fresh Band boogie classic of the same name - which, strangely enough, was also released in 1984 - Carl Smith's 'Come Back Lover' is something of a hard-to-find rarity that thoroughly deserves this reissue. Written, produced and arranged by Smith, who also delivers the effortlessly soulful lead vocal, the track is an excellent example of the synth-powered, funk-fuelled NYC boogie sound pushed by DJs like Larry Levan in New York City in the early-to-mid 1980s. The bassline, in particular, is brilliant, and genuinely drives the track forward. Just as the original 1984 release did, this reissue features both the original version and the dub-style 'Club Mix', which in true Levan style includes a delay-laden drums-and-vocal breakdown midway through.

Give It Up
Liberated Woman
Review: Neddy Smith seems to be just another one of those smooth operators consigned to early 80s history on the excellent Delirium label, but lucky for us Best Records are on hand to dig him out and bring "Give It Up" to a whole new crowd. This is crisp, laid back boogie of the highest caliber, with the title track in particular nailing everything we love about this inimitable era of funk. There's more than whiff of Luther Vandross about the opening strains of "Give It Up", but "Liberated Woman" strikes out on its own with a more ballad-like tone but no dip in the all-important get down.

More... I Like It (4:48)
Twenty Seven (4:03)
More... I Like It (instrumental) (5:01)
Review: REPRESS ALERT! Best Record Italy take the time machine all the way back to 1979 to revisit the wonderful Italo-Disco delights of Adolf Stern, whose "More... I Like It" represents the strangest end of the genre as it was taking shape. With heavily processed vocals injecting some serious strangeness into the chirpy disco backdrop, it's the kind of track to turn heads without a doubt. "Twenty Seven" on the B-side is equally magical in its capturing of the era, with the more obvious surface elements underpinned by a truly intoxicating line in synth arpeggios. Once again Best comes up trumps refreshing the history of Italian music of all shapes and sizes.

I'm Hungry (feat Caramba mix)
Cat: BSTX 034. Rel: 04 Jun 18
I'm Hungry (6:14)
I'm Hungry (Caramba mix) (8:32)
Review: Best are really reaching for the serious stuff here - Stopp was one of those mythical one hit wonders of the Italo disco era that somehow caught a wave on distant shores. It's not hard to see why "I'm Hungry" was huge with the early Chicago house wave and DJs like Ron Hardy. It's a surefire banger, all daggering arpeggio basslines and romantic, mystical lead lines with a catchy vocal chant line to really set the party off. The "Caramba Mix" is no slouch either, edging in a little more club-ready dynamics for those who need a more beat-oriented ingredient for their proto-house cocktail.
