The Tropical EP
The Tropical EP (double 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: AOS 010. Rel: 30 Jun 21
Aceedo Domingo - "Corre Riba" (4:25)
Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

Don Ray - "Got To Have Nothing" (Might Mouse dub) (4:28)
The Blackbyrds - "Rock Creek Park" (Lego edit) (4:38)
Michael Jackson - "PYT" (Bully Boy Refix) (4:40)
Review: Another double dose of seven-inch action from the Art of Sedition crew, who once again offer up a quartet of floor-focused re-edits stretched across two dinky slabs of wax. Mighty Mouse's punchy instrumental dub of Don Ray's "Got To Have Nothing" also hits the spot. On the second disc, Lego Edit flexes his muscles with a locked in, house style take of the bass-heavy classic "Rock Creek Park", before Bully Boy does his best Reflex impression on what sounds like a ground-up stems revision of MJ classic "PYT".

Sanctify

Sanctify (4:03)
Sanctify (T Groove Smooth mix) (4:14)
Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

Leather Pants (4:24)
Nicci's Theme (3:35)
Review: The relentless Athens Of The North is having a busy month even by its own high standards. February alone has at least three new 45rpms dropping and this might be the best: Homegrown Syndrome were a band that ended up in LA but giggled all round Memphis. Some members had played with an earlier band but they all came good on these previously unleashed tunes that have been found in the attic of Jerry Jones. 'Got The Love' is a chunky funky stepper with swirling synths and disco energy. 'Party Vibes' then takes off once more on hip swig claps, big arching chords and strident drums.

Stay Off The Moon (2:33)
Review: Bill Brown and Al Hall jr met in 1971 in south central LA and shared the same flat as jazz man Doug Carn and Brownstone vocalist Billy Wilson. They often played together and some of the sessions gave rise to the two hard to find tracks offered up here. 'Dreamworld Fantasie' is a first release of an unissued 1977 disco and soul gem that muses on how we'd all like our lives to be - and right now such escapist vibes have never been more in need. Flip it over and you'll find a rare though previously released 1971 single 'Stay Off The moon', which delivers a poignant political message that resonates to this day.

My Life (3:46)
My Life (dub) (4:34)
Review: Danish-German production duo Cool Million (Frank Ryle, Robert 'Rob' Hardt) are specialists in nu-disco and neo-boogie. Until late, they've flaunted this expertise via their renditions of old funk standouts, be that from the likes of Donald Byrd or James Brown. Here, however, the pair team up with Tomas Thordarson for a front-and-centre G-funker of the squeeziest quality, 'My Life', whose lyrics match its form via mentions of 'cutting like a knife' rhymed, of course, with 'paradise'. The instrumental dub is just as glassy and arid, its standout element being the huge, zesty, quivering chords marking out the phrase transitions.

Windy City Theme (2:44)
Show Me The Way To Love (3:27)
Review: Throughout the 1960s and'70s, producer and A&R man Carl Davis was one of the pivotal figures on the Chicago soul scene. Yet despite producing hundreds of records, he only ever released a few under his own name, the highlight of which was undoubtedly 1976's "Windy City Theme". Released on his own Chi-Sound label and backed by the orchestra he used on recordings by such artists as the Chi-Lites, the track is a musically detailed chunk of distinctive mid-tempo disco rich in mazy sax solos, sweet female backing vocals, and seriously undulating grooves. On this timely reissue, the track is naturally backed by its' original B-side, a sugary chunk of polished, richly orchestrated soul called "Show Me The Way To Love".

Diesler & The Jazzinvaders - "The Sunchaser II"
Asterion - "I See" (feat Neil Cowley - Revbjelde edit)
Review: What began as a Diesler remix of The Jazzinvaders several years back has now turned into a collaborative project in its own right. Hectic, percussion heavy and charged with jazzy, sunkissed samba flavours it's the perfect unity of The Jazzinvaders live spirit and Diesler's heavier dancefloor swing. For balance, Neil Cowley takes us deep into the realms of psychedelic house with his remix of Asterion's "I See". With rusty Rhodes and a bassline that morphs into an utter beast, it's the perfect foil to the crazy fusion of the main A-side.

Tonight (vocal) (3:20)
Tonight (dub) (3:21)
Review: Athens of the North 'house band' East Coast Love Affair recently returned to action with 'I'm So Glad', a driving disco-funk outing tailor-made for sweaty club sessions. For this speedy follow-up, they've recruited effortlessly soulful vocalist Theo Suess and musically flipped the script. Built around skittish lo-fi beats, immersive chords and bubbly synth-bass, 'Tonight' sits somewhere between deliciously deep house and lo-fi boogie. It's genuinely brilliant, with Suess providing an immaculately emotive lead vocal on the A-side main mix. The flip-side 'Dub' is superb, too, with snippets of Suess's vocals echoing across an enveloping, loved-up instrumental backing track.

The Fatback Band - "(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop" (Funk mix) (4:07)
The Bus Stop Band - "Fatback" (3:57)
Review: From the aquatically-focused Pirahna & The Posse Productions crew, the Octoposse label has a simple premise, to give you bang tidy rub downs of crucial funk cuts. No nonsense, just a razor sharp instinct for razor and tape in pursuit of the good groove. They kicked off some four years ago with edits of Dexter Wansel and Pleasure, and now they're going in on a smoking hot 7" featuring one of the greatest cuts The Fatback Band ever committed to tape. '(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop' is widely considered one of the best in all of funkdom, and for good reason. As well as a funked up remix on the A-side, you get a smouldering instrumental ride out on the flip, all the better to get those bodies locked in rhythm.

Review: Ten years deep and these edit still pop... Krivit takes everything that rocks and pops on Orgone's cover of The Beginning Of The End's seminal "Funky Nassau", extends it, applies the breaks and turns it inside out. It genuinely can't fail. The very same can be said for his take on Armada Orchestra's cover of Gamble & Huff's O'Jays smash "For The Love Of Money". Focusing in on the instrumentation and slinkiness of the groove, Krivit is a true edit master.

Review: Remix time! Tom's Terisa Griffin-fronted smoocher "Magic (Spell On Me) from his 2017 album "Divas Got Soul" gets a surprise remix treatment from some of Japan's finest groove craftsmen. First up is the legendary Yuki "T-Groove" Takahashi, picking up where his remix of Tom's "Soul Life" left us, it's a full-on feel-good explosion that refuses to quit. Come Together (4:38)
Review: The Icy City imprint comes roaring through with their second EP to date, an absolutely killer amalgamation of boogie sounds from the warmth and depth of analogue instruments. Reggie Grantham and The New Generation take it back to 1985, bubbling up the airwaves with nothing but raw percussion and steaming basslines, reminding us of the best electro output from the golden era. "Come Together" should surely be seen as a future classic and, of course, as the sort of killer that you keep in the DJ bag at all times! Sensational stuff.

'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

Jakki - "You Are The Star" (6:37)
Chuck Davis Orchestra - "Spirit Of Sunshine" (6:23)
Review: Westend brings more of that glorious disco goodness that they have been so well known and loved for over such a long period of time. This one is a split that kicks off with Jake's 'You Are the Star.' It's propelled by neat and tidy bass guitar riffs with more decorative melodies and riffs up top. The drums have an irresistible sense of slide to them and the vocal is of course the icing on the cake. Chuck Davis Orchestra steps up in the flip with more lush and classy disco complete with effervescent string stabs and more funky bass. 'Spirit Of Sunshine' manages to bottle up just that and douse you in it from start to finish.

It's a warming and funky rhythm overload with organic percussion and backed by lush chords as the Mavis vocal teases, pleases and seduces. Track 1 (Multi Trax mix 1) (4:50)
Track 2 (Multi Trax mix 2) (4:43)
Review: Multi-track re-edits, where producers utilize the instrumental and vocal parts found on studio master tapes, are all the rage right now. While the Rephlex crew and Joey Negro are the most famous exponents of the art, Galaxy Sound Co regular Kadena has previously proved to be rather adept at it, too. Here the little-known producer channels the spirit of original disco remixer Walter Gibbons, first to provide a lolloping, groove-based revision of Instant Funk's intergalactic Salsoul classic "I Got My Mind Made Up" (side A), and then to deliver a similarly minded take on First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder". Like its A-side companion, it's warmer, looser and predominantly instrumental, with judicious use of key vocal passages.

Review: There is some class edit and mash up business going on here with the latest one from the Disco Bits crew. The 45 takes the form of of classic cuts reworked with an all new and contemporary edge with the dancefloor very much in mind. First up, a Patti Job classic gets taken apart and rebuilt with new vocals and a more stepping beat. Review: LEGO EDIT's 'Marlena' is a testament to the label's crafty likening fo funk re-editing with fastening a sculpture out of Lego blocks. The Italian funk pushers serve up a new crock of reinterpretations here, replete with crisp drums and an infectious bassline, of Marlena Shaw's rabble-rousing 'Woma Of The Ghetto', a classic which asks the righteous question of "how do we clean the rats out of the ghetto?" Review: As the Mad About label hurtles towards release number 100 it looks to the talents of Webster Lewis and The Spirit of Atlanta for two more fiery gems on a very useful 7". There are hints of Library music in the noodling melodies of the A-side jam 'El Bobo'. It has jazz-funk keys and organic drum rhythms gently tumbling below the Rhodes magic up top. The Spirit Of Atlanta's 'Freddie's Alive & Well' then picks up the pace with a more high-speed and 60s-influenced jazz-funk sound featuring some buttery smooth vocals up top. Nuda Sorgente (4:47)
Review: Lorenzo Morresi is an Italian DJ, producer and musician who now makes his debut on bristling London label 22a alongside the boss Tenderlonious. This 7" is an album sampler of Italian library inspired disco-funk that draws on the sound's 70s heyday. It was a shared love of this sound and this period that brought these two artists together having first played together at a gig in Italy in 2017. Having finally got together to record, they have mixed up contemporary analogue inspired arrangements and experimental, joyful, playful sounds that are as good at home as they will be on the 'floor. The album drops next year, and this is a fine taster.

This tenth edition is another must-have - on the A-side you'll find the synth-laden, boogie-era sunshine of "Everybody Dance", one of the undisputed highlights of Peter Yamson's in-demand (and notably hard to find) "Son Of Africa" LP. This time round, he's joined by vocalist Moss Kena and New York based nu-disco duo The Knocks. 'Fireworks' is short and sweet, but cheerfully funky and positive - all synthesized steel pan sounds, choral chorus vocals, Olly Murs style lead vocals, Nile Rodgers guitars and disco grooves so chunky and addictive they might not leave your head for several weeks. The quality of Piontek's backing track can be explored further on the flipside instrumental, which is every bit as alluring as the vocal take and - in our opinion - is arguably even stronger.

Review: The long running house label Nervous dips its toe into the world of disco edits again here, but does so with a crack team on the buttons. The Rhzye original has first been remixed by Master at Work Louie Vega, then edit by Body & Soul man Danny Krivit. It makes for a warm and organic stomper, with big horn leads and clipped kicks that make you skip. Appearing on a tasty seven-inch single, this two-tracker for Glitterbox features some of their strongest work since those halcyon days. The band formed in 1977 in Miami and was a popular house band in the Tampa Bay nightclub that mostly played covers as well as their own originals in an array of styles. One day the group ripened to an advert on a local radio station for forums to submit music to be inclined on a new comparison showcasing local talents and this is the track they sent it. It is one of only ten tunes to have made the cut and it's easy to see why - it's a fine and high-paced fusion of jazz, disco and soul that sweeps you off your feet. The Mighty Zaf edit on the flip distills things slightly into a track that's even more potent.

Come With Me (4:13)
Lost In Amazonia (4:19)
Review: Brazilian jazz vocalist Tania Maria is a true icon with a huge back catalogue of music behind her, but of course it sometimes helps if a diligent digger weaves a path through the reams of albums and pulls out a couple of the best. That's just what Soul Brother have done with this 7", looking back to Maria's 1983 album Come With Me and lifting a pair of pearlers for a fresh walk in the sun. 'Come With Me' is a sundown slinker, with Maria's airy tone gliding over the sprightly piano chords while on the flip 'Lost In Amazonia' is a joyous, scat-powered slice of jazz funk with incredible slap bass flex.

Review: Woody Whittaker, Ronnie Arch, Wayne Chatman and his wife Loma are California band T.A.X.I.E aka Talented Artist Xclusively In Entertainment. The head of the Epsilon Record Co. made contact with them on a trip Stateside in search of new music and eventually agreed to put out some of their previously unissued tracks. The two he offers up here are delightful disco gems - 'Dance' is first and is a mid-tempo groove with gorgeous harmonies and seductive guitar melodies. 'Taxie Band' is a more upbeat and jazz-funk-tinged gem that overflows with soul and joyous vibes.

Review: Taxie's 'Rock Don't Stop' was brought back to prominence by the likes of Floating Points who regularly drops it in his expansive sets of disco, soul and funk gold. He even reissued it on his own Melodies International label in 2015, and now Epsilon Record Co get in on the act with some carefully unearthed and previously unreleased versions on this new 7". The A-side is an alt mix that's a little more raw and lo-fi, but just as glorious as the standout original. On the reverse is the superbly slow and seductive sunset soul of 'I Think I'm Falling In Love' which cannot fail to melt your heart with its golden keys, woody percussion and lush vocals.

TB - "So Much Love To Give" (4:17)
DJ F - "Together" (4:26)
Review: Electric Mojo is an American label that is decided to reissue plenty of the golden oldies of techno, big euro-dance hits and plenty of French and filter house gems, which is exactly what we have on this latest instalment. TB's version of 'So Much Love To Give' opens up and it is a huge wall of pixelated synth sounds that fizzes over you like breaking waves as the loopy vocal rings out for all the sing back. On the flip side you find DJ F's 'Together' which is less intense in its loops but just as infectious - the cold drums, warmer vocal loops and endlessly cycling synths will all work any dancefloor into a lather.

Love Dancing (3:46)
Can't Hold Back (3:55)
Review: Temu's outings on Star Creature offshoot Tugboat Editions tend towards the squelchy, synth-heavy and eccentric, joining the dots between classic electrofunk and neo-boogie. Here he continues that trend, offering up two fantastic cover versions of classic cuts that somehow manage to sound contemporary and fresh despite extensive use of vintage synth and drum machine sounds. On side A he presents 'Love Dancing', a warped and wonky synth-boogie style re-imagining of Loose Joints' 'Is It All Over My Face' that's as potent as it is eccentric. Over the on the flip, he steps it up further on a killer synth-funk-meets-80s soul take on Kano's 1981 Italo-disco gem 'Can't Hold Back Your Loving'. It's simply superb and drips soul from every note.

Mysteria (Electric remix) (3:56)
Vocalize My Luv (feat Florence Adooni & Lizzy Amaliyenga - Electric remix) (4:09)
Review: In recent years we've become accustomed to Jimi Tenor flitting between off-kilter jazz, Afro-soul and - most recently via a Freestyleman collaboration - oddball house. 'Mysteria', his latest single, recalls the easy-going vocal numbers that marked out his years on Warp Records in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Not quite lounge, synth-pop, deep boogie or jazz-funk but rather something in between, the song features a typical lead vocal from Finland's greatest export bar Teemu Pukki, some seriously squelchy bass, and plenty of retro-futurist charm. Arguably even better is 'Vocalize My Love', a kind of jumpy Afro-dancehall number featuring analogue bass, hot-stepping drums and superb vocals courtesy of Florence Addoni and Lizzy Amaliyenga.

Review: Terry Tester hails from Copenhagen and has already impressed with some Detroit-inspired house heat on labels like Brownswood and BBE. He has also dropped a fine solo EP on Creak Inc this month but at the same time the label has enlisted two artists to remix two of his tunes on this new 12". Up first is 'Grace' (Buscrates Reflip), an early evening and boogie-fried deep house cut with hip-swinging claps and conversational leads that bring the funk. The B-side is more business-like - 'Space Million' (Ian Wallace remix) has dev, dynamic drums and heart-aching vocal hooks for late-night dancing.

Latin Jazz Dance (Voodoo edit) (5:06)
Electric Counterpoint (Dream edit) (4:30)
Review: Over the last few years, Gigi Testa has become renowned for delivering sun-kissed tracks and re-edits that variously draw influence from deep house, Afro-cosmic, Balearica, and jazz-funk. This edit-focused two-tracker continues on a similar theme. "Latin Jazz-Dance (Voodoo Edit)" is simply superb - an effervescent, rush-inducing re-model of a Latin jazz-funk number rich in layered percussion, breezy flute solos, bouncy piano riffs and suitably ambidextrous fretless bass. In contrast, "Electric Counterpoint (Dream Edit)" is a totally beat-free affair. It sees him go to work on the Steve Reich/Pat Metheny classic of the same name, adding dubbed-out effects and subtle vocal overdubs here and there. Like the original version, it's blissful, awe-inspiring stuff.

Gigi Testa - "Tamborim, Cuica, Ganza, Berimbau" (Candomble edit) (5:55)
Marsupial - "Like An Eagle" (disco refold) (4:54)
Review: It may be a dinky little 7" single, but there are some big, bold sounds pressed into the grooves of Cut The Records' second re-edit release. Check, for example, Gigi Testa's six-minute A-side rub of Azymuth's 1977 Brazilian jazz-funk gem "Tamborim, Cuica, Ganza, Berimbau", which chops, loops, tweaks and rearranges in all the right places, resulting in a veritable carnival of Rhodes electric pianos, scat vocals and samba percussion. Even bigger and bolder is the Marsupials' flipside revision of Todd Terje favourite and notoriously epic - read brilliantly camp and overblown - disco anthem "Like an Eagle". While people have tampered with the Dennis Parker classic before, few have treated it with as much respect.

Review: Both of the songs on this 1981 release by The Floater Orchestra were re-recorded by the Detroit-based outfit last year by the original band members. Led by drummer Ronnie Nelson alongside vocalists Esther Todd and Greg Mathis, the band is additionally served by veterans of the Motor City scene such as Spyder Turner, Pat Lewis, Carolyn Crawford, Willie Kendrick. The A side features the life-affirming late night boogie-down vibe of 'Happy Family', followed over on the flip by the romantic disco-funk of "Let Love Come Right On In" with its powerful female vocal and brilliant brass section.

Review: With no less than nine releases on the label to their name already, Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are Galaxy Sound Co's most experienced editors. Here they deliver another fantastic "45" packed with righteous grooves and life-affirming jazz moves. It's the latter that comes to the fore on side A's "Flute Thing", a sweet and seductive drift through picturesque jazz territory with some additional loose-limbed drum solos edited in halfway through. "Do What You Gotta Do" on the other hand is a simmering, string-laden soul treat rich in killer instrumentation, sumptuous orchestration, chunky grooves and hazy vocals. It's a fine edit of a superb cut and easily the record's standout cut.

Review: Pressure Makes Diamonds casts us back to the 80's on this red hot bit of boogie disco. It is the fine work of an iconic jazz drummer and educator from Houston, Texas, by the name of Bubbha Thomas . e played on plenty of pivotal releases in the fields of R&B, gospel, blues and soul and led his spiritual ensemble 'The Lightmen' to five Grammy nominations, as well as writing a couple of books. With 'Boogie Down' the outfit moved away from jazz and into a rich world of disco and mid-tempo funk. Big fat claps, backing vocals that are buttery and wide open drum breaks all make it irresistible.

Review: A regular triple-figure fetch on the auction sites, it was only a matter of time before Henry Thomas & Rise's beautiful 80s soul doublet experienced the strong-armed justice of Fryer. Not just reissued but sourced and tracked down - this is just the start of what will hopefully be a whole load of criminally slept on and unreleased soul from Henry and his troupe. "My Dreams Are Clouded" is a verified club banger with its FM synth ripples and low-down bass bumps while "Don't Wait Too Long" is the ultimate come home record. Slinky, swooning and soaked in raw dollops of emotion - Henry Thomas is, once again, on the rise.

Review: Walter Thomas' 'I Wanna Get Witcha' deserves this reissue; not quite legal tender, it formerly existed as a 7" on Real Side Records as a street soul single coupled with the A-side 'Hold On To The Blues'. Originally intended to complement the CD release of Thomas' first CD '23rd Street', it's debatable as to whether the wax pressing even exists on a commercial scale. Now the single gets a real reissue via CQQL; Thomas' paean to his love interest shines strong, with the instrumental on the B backing his mating call with style.
