Ride Again
Cat: LOEB 005. Rel: 13 Jul 07
Black Devil/Prins Thomas - "On Just Foot (Slide Inside)"
Black Devil/Unit 4 - "An Other Skin (Days Of Blackula)"
Black Devil/Black Mustang - "Constantly No Respect (The Phenomena Of)"
Review: Black Devil Disco Club returns to action on LoEB with "Ride Again", a collection of mixes from his "In Dub" album. First up is the Prins Thomas mix of "On Just Foot", a chugging Italo disco groover led by a rolling arpeggiated b-line, quirky analogue stabs, vocoder vocal hits and wicked conga-laden beats. Proper floor-pleasing Italo workout. Next we have the Unit 4 mix of "An Other Skin", more b-line driving space disco with dark sounds and huge synth lines. Last but not least is the Black Mustang mix of "Constantly No Respect", a hard-hitting percussive jam exploring the darker side of the Italo universe.

Sitar Beat Vol 5

RD Burman - "The Burning Train Theme"
Unknown Artist - "Disco 82"
Kalyanji Anandji - "YOGA"
Kalyanji Anandji - "Disco Cammata"
RD Burman - "Pyar Karnewale" (feat Asha Bhosle)
Review: The Sitar Beat series is built with the DJ in mind - collecting some of the wildest, heaviest and most psychedelic Indian funk recorded and presenting it loud, and ready for the turntable. The first four volumes were assembled by one Indian music aficionado... For the first time, a "guest compiler" was brought in to lace you with some obscure goodies for volume five. As always, we continue the dig into Indian deep funk and psycho-psychedelic masterpieces recorded for the Bollywood film industry. And this time we're even going straight to Indian VHS Videotapes to issue incidental music never before released on vinyl... Sitar Beat Volume Five offers up the sought after title track from RD Burman's "Burning Train" soundtrack alongside Indo-disco (including one helluva Kraftwerk rip off!) and promises to be the first time that many of these songs are heard by the record-buying public - at least in this form. Edits remove any bobbing and weaving, leaving funk that only flies straight ahead!

Crown Prince Of Waterford - "Getting Fingered On The Waltzers" (13:19)
Island Times - "Together" (5:47)
Umberto Lumber - "Between Those Sheets" (4:54)
Review: Chubby Irish groove hounds Fatty Fatty return with another sublime funk-stacked V/A three tracker. Local lad Crown Prince Of Waterford (not to be confused with the legendary blues singer) lays down a furiously funky jam about having fun at the fairground while fellow Emerald Isle strutter Island Times returns Fatty Fatty with a loose-limbed falsetto-loaded twanger. Finally, we fly off into the Italian sunset with a stunning slow jam from Umberto Lumber. A twinkling slo-mo chugger with serious cosmic tendencies, what a way to finish an EP.

A Minute Too Late (7:34)
United Spiritual Singers - "Not A Minute Too Late" (Tom Noble mix) (6:50)
Review: Since 2020, Athens of the North's in-house band, East Coast Love Affair, has been serving up increasingly impressive slabs of retro-futurist brilliance. Previously, they've turned their hand to spacey jazz-funk/house fusion ('Don't Be Afraid'), deep vocal house ('Without You'), disco-funk ('Confrontations') and lovers rock (a superb cover of Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain'). This time round, they join forces with veteran gospel-soul choir United Spiritual Singers to deliver an incendiary disco-funk cover of the outfit's obscure (and recently reissued) 'A Minute Too Late'. The scorching, club-ready original mix comes accompanied by a superb Tom Noble rework that re-images the track as a Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style proto-house heater full of reverb-laden vocals, echoing drum machine percussion and addictive synth-bass.

Shit Hot Soundsystem - "Woah" (De Gama Re-Built) (7:15)
Uptown Funk - "South Side Boogie" (De Gama Re-Built) (6:18)
Coldbeard - "A Funky Situation" (7:32)
Review: Daje Funk serves up a big slice of high-grade weaponry for working DJs here with the ninth installment of disco. It is a various artists affair that opens with the rolling rhythm section and funky horns of Ronny Hammond's 'Keep On Groovin.' Shit Hot Soundsystem get a slight re-edit from De Gama but their 'Woah' sure will hit the spot with its retro funky samples, chunky drums and expansive vocal. De Game offer another edit to open the b-side, this time of Uptown Funk's smooth disco groover 'South Side Boogie.' Last of all, things slow down to a crawl over seven steamy minutes of deep disco dubness with Coldbeard's 'A Funky Situation.'

The Highest Bidder (3:20)
Hard World (3:33)
Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

Istanbul 70: Psych Disco Folk Edits By Baris K Vol II
Cem Karaca - "Nem Alacak Felek Benim"
Kamuran Akkor - "Ikimiz Bir Fidaniz"
Urfali Babi - "Disko Kebap"
Senay - "Dalkavuk"
Review: The first volume of Istanbul Edits from the Nublu imprint didn't spend long at Juno, and rightly so because the killer Anatolian tweaks from Baris K were more than matched by the cover art! The NYC label swiftly serves up a second helping from the Turkish disco lynchpin which maintains the standards set with aplomb. There's a real devilish charm to all the tracks present here, with the overtly dramatic vocals on Cem Karaca's "Nem Alacak Felek Benim" complemented by a subtle filtered sensation from Senor K - you'll love the slight slip of acid wigout that appears midway through. After that you get sultry twilight slink (Ikimiz Bir Fidaniz), something approaching proto house (the revelatory "Disko Kebap" from Urfali Babi) and perhaps the mosty overtly disco track in "Dalkavuk" from Senay. If you're a fan of the more obscure disco sounds out there this record will hit the spot perfectly.

I Hear Music In The Streets (Touch mix) (10:45)
I Hear Music In The Streets (Expansions NYC dub) (4:49)
I Hear Music In The Streets (LV Classic Boogie mix) (6:33)
Review: Anyone with even the smallest interest in disco and boogie will have heard Unlimited Touch's 1980 classic 'I Hear Music In The Streets'. It's a stone-cold killer that should be approached with caution. Louie Vega, of course, is respectful, and these versions are not remixes but rather re-makes, with the Masters at Work man being joined in the studio by all manner of guest musicians and vocalists - including original members of Unlimited Touch. The standout version is the near 11-minute A-side 'Touch Mix', an all-live post-disco version rich in classic disco bass, guitars, electric piano keys and spacey chords. The short-ish 'NYC Expansions Dub' cans the vocals and emphasises the various instrument solos, while the 'LV Classic Boogie Mix' is an almost note-for-note remake of the 1980 original.

Review: Marcel Vogel's ever-ready LIH imprint celebrates six years of juicy, sassy, often illicit disco soul with some of the label's best cuts to date. Ideal for filling any holes in your collection, the likes of Uptown Funk Empire's Pharoah Saunders cover "Freedom", Manmademusic's gospel-level "Circles", Eddie C's tweaking, freaking drum funk "What It Is", Stacy and Peven's stuttering funk "Body Jerkin" still slap and tickle just as stylishly and smoothly as they did when Marcel first prised them from the editor's clutches... And still will in 10, 20 or 50 years-time. Proper dancefloor clobber.

Ground Plane Aerial - "Transition SP" (6:11)
VIGI - "I Am You" (5:06)
Monny Me - "The Name Of The Game" (5:35)
Ugly Frankie - "Free Alcohol Shit" (4:32)
Review: St Petersberg's Dobro label is noted not just for the quality and playability of its funky house and disco re-edits, but also for its value for money. This, their seventh release, is another great example, with no less than six floorfillers included on one 12", each bringing their own individual mood to the table. 'Flowers Festival' from Sun Rhythms has throbbing organs and fruity keys, topped off by a gorgeous Russian vocal. DJ Merci's 'Timetable' goes for chunky rave pianos and Fairlight stabs, lending it an 80s Italo-disco feel, before Ground Plane Aerial's 'Transition SP' closes the side with slap bass and stripped down house vibe that echoes some of Roule Records' more accessible moments. Side two VIGI's 'I Am You', is the most memorable of the whole package, with its idiosyncratic female vocal weaving a magical spell around the listener, before we finish off with a double whammy of Monny Me's swirling stringfest 'The Name Of The Game' and the parping horns and strutting groove of Ugly Frankie's 'Free Alcohol Shit', the latter including a bewitching and unexpected piano solo. Great work all round.

Left The Sun Shine In
+1
Review: Having contributed to Man Make Music's recent under-the-counter Edits 12", the mysterious U returns with a more conclusive demonstration of his/her production capacity with a second 10" release for the label founded by Georgey FitzG and co. Lead cut "I" is based around a pretty darn soulful vocal hook and the way it's edited shows U to be quite the talent. The production work around it is reminiscent of Daphni at times and the overall result is one of those tracks that will immediately grab a dancefloor. Premiered on Pitchfork, B Side cut "Left The Sun Shine In" shows U is eminently capable of more than feel good house music, feeling more like a less introverted Forest Swords track whilst "+1" is a wonderfully fuzzy piano vignette.

How's Your Father (5:57)
Review: New label U - Bend debuted back in September with a tidy Balearic 12" and promised that it would "bridge the gap between acid cougars and the namaste death cult." It is the eponymous production team that takes charge of this 12" again and again the vibe is Balearic. 'Rip It Off' starts off with some syrupy and sugary rhythms that are laid back and funky in their own way. Steamy vocals and acidic liens drive to take things higher and on the flip 'How's Your Father' brings some more laid back cool, this time with acoustic guitar strums and cosmic pads.

Solace Mirror Ball (SLO remix)
Forgotten Tune (Seahawks Dusty Drams mix)
Review: The Juno review team is not afraid to admit a lack of familiarity with U-Ka before the release of their debut album Supernova, but we're happy to have discovered this pair of disconauts from in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen as the album was a cosmic wonder. It's already been complemented by one round of high profile remixes but Groovitron really spoil us with a second that's just as good! A record featuring the collective talents of Idjut Boys, Frisvold & Lindbaek, Above Machine's SLO and Seahawks is likely to pique the interest of any self respecting disco punk and you won't be disappointed with their efforts here. The 'Grande Salle' remix of the album's title track from Idjut Boys is an obvious highlight, with a stripped back dubby house groove allowing the space for a wonderfully warm arpeggiated synth line to shine. Frisvold & Lindbaek set the delayometer to 15 on their killer refix of "Farewell" whilst the B Side offers a slightly more horizontal take on U-Ka's work from SLO and Seahawks.

Karmic Souls (6:22)
Review: After a series of successful grooves on Bitter Moon, Matteo Pepe's Uabos makes himself known on the perennial Bordello A Parigi. It's the perfect fit: Pepe's uplifting analogue soul thrusts with a sense of positivity and musicality that tips a respectful hat to the legacy of Italo. The ageless consistency runs throughout smoothly as we're flung from the barbed flickers of acid on "Mystic Force" to the sci-fi imagery and emotion of "City Woods". Elsewhere "Karmic Souls" flexes back to 1990 with its rolling broken drums while "Copacabana" will have everyone reliving the 80s - even if they weren't even born that decade.

Across this neat ten inch the duo present trademark Melody and Instrumental versions of two Smith classics. The A Side brings the soft funk rock vibes to "Everyone Knows I Love You", the Northern Soul gem Kenny made for the Kogan imprint, with the brassy leanings of the second version quite delightful. Break diggers will be licking their fingers at the raw materials on offer with "Think All About Number" a heavily vibing funker filled with plenty of brass and organ attitude.

Review: Though Ubre Blanca is a relatively new concern, those with a firm grasp of recent Glaswegian music history will be familiar with the project's two protagonists Joel Stone and Andy Brown. The former was a founding member of the art-punk troupe SHITDISCO who caused a notable racket with their clutch of releases on Fierce Panda circa 2005-07. Brown meanwhile was drummer in Divorce, a similarly minded and recently disbanded group whose output surfaced on Merok, Optimo Music and Night School Records amongst others. A new side to their respective musical palettes is shown with Ubre Blanca, seemingly named after a breed of Cuban cow, with their Polygon Mountain EP revelling in 'horror synth jams' that pay clear homage to Goblin, Carpenter et al. The live drumming from Brown offers an added dimension to a quartet of productions that have the soaring synth lines on lock down, with the twelve minute title track an obvious highlight. A superb record from an under-valued label.

Delirium (UB 7' edit) (4:30)
Review: The UB's bring their particular brand of funk to this steamy and fiery new 7" on the Fraternity label. It finds them in edit mode and first up reworking 'Stone Fox Chase'. It has some country-style harmonica built into the raw beats and plenty of psyched-out guitar lines that bring Americana vibes to the percolating rhythms. On the flip is their edit of 'Delirium' which is a totally different proposition - smooth funk grooves with busy chords and icy hi-hats. It's one that looks to the stars and crushes there on a feelgood vibe you hope never ends.

Fresh Out The Water
Review: Making for a formidable partnership with their respective loves of beatdown house and boogie, Ugly Drums and Inkswel link up on City Fly for this marvelous EP that makes a powerful opening statement that will appeal to soul cats as much as house heads. The original version of "Watch Out!" features Charli James on vocals, cooing out a righteous delivery over a chunky, squelchy rhythm loaded with 80s funk signifiers. Inkswel then delivers a tripped out dub of the track that will have all lovers of weirdo grooves grinning inanely, while on the flip "Uglyink Theme" gets into a woozy downtempo house frame of mind. "Fresh Out The Water" slows things down even further with a prime slab of dreamy boogie modernism that would go down smooth next to some Dam Funk.

Here comes more of those uplifting beats for happy dance floors courtesy of Ukokos & Jabco, who follow up from their huge 'Keep Rising All Night Long' with more massive gospel vocals and strong melodies. Of course, the production is always soulful production from these boys and ratter than the more hip hop leaning beats of their past, the lean on house frameworks for their rhythms here. On the flipside however it is more of a disco vibe with a big vocal sample primed and ready to get those hands in the air.

Dreamboy 84
Review: The archives of Estonian artist Uku Kuut continue to prove fertile stomping ground for the PPU label, with this latest transmission drawing from unreleased material he recorded with his mother Maryn Coote. Coote is quite an established musician in her own right, recording a couple of albums as Marju Kuut, as well as collaborating with compatriot Uno Loop and it's clear her musical background helped shape Uku's formative direction. If you've partaken in any previous Kuut retrospectives from PPU, the four tracks here will be a real delight, with "Mayday" and "Dreamboy 84" particular highlights. The former is an alternate tape mix of a track from the Vision Of Estonia LP issued by the label back in 2012, whilst the latter features Marju's vocals in full swing.

Review: We have long had a soft spot for the sounds that come out of DC label People's Potential Unlimited, which is affectionately known as PPU. It's always lo-fi but hi-class whether in original or reissue form. It's the latter here with leftfield Estonian artist Uku Kuut's 'Funky' 7" reappearing on wax. The opener is all singing synth lines and jumbled analogue drum funk with an oddball vocal and generally stuffy arrangement making it all the more lovable. Review: Theoretically there will come a point where People's Potential Unlimited runs out of obscure funk and boogie from the eighties. And that day will be a very dark one, as every release from the Washington based label is a real delight, with PPU030 no exception. Originally out way back in 1983 on LA imprint Montage, "Give It Up" sees Ultimate Choice plough a decidedly p-funk slant on boogie and it would take a veritable curmudgeon to not be hooked as soon as that tight funk riff drops. It's the sort of track you feel right in your hips, is rough around the edges and has a killer vocal hook. Flip over the stripped down rump pump of "It's Hot" with a rhythm that sounds like it's been sampled more than a few times!

Review: Prins Thomas, Mark E, Bulgari and Ultra City all feature on Epic Disco Vol 2, the long overdue return to the twelve inch game from the Rollerboys imprint. Label supremos Ultra City aka Elias & Yourhighness open proceedings in excellent fashion with the resplendent "Delta" a richly rewarding exercise in effervescent Chicago house based around instantly uplifting piano tones and loose cascading Roland 707 patterns - instant dancefloor uplift guaranteed on this one. Merc boss Mark E follows with the deeper sounds of "Walk With Me" utilising a familiar vocal refrain amidst a musical arrangement that pairs subtle elements such as heart warming chords with the more intense synths. Flip over and Prins Thomas introduces a lesson in the art of infinite build via the primal, stripped down 303 jam "Stockholm Express" which has us rather excited for his forthcoming new album. Rollerboys regular Bulgari eases down the tempo to finish with a echo laden electro boogie future classic in the shape of "I Was On".

The luscious dreamlike krautrock melodies of "Gibson In E" are finally made available for purchase some eight months after matching the voice of Tim Sweeney in the woozy stakes on Beats In Space. This guy makes synthy, drone-fuelled music like no other and "Temple Room" is a genuine whirlpool of drum-machine oddity and melodic sparseness, whereas Silvio's remix speeds up the tempo, pushes the hyper-space button and fuels its engines for a true pounding of cosmic disco-house. Review: Not to be confused with Trevor Jackson's covert edit alias of the same name from the mid '90s, Chicago scalpel wielder Leonard Part Sixx brings his Underdog project to New York's finest Razor N Tape for a hefty double pack. "Drum Jawn" sets the bar high, a percussion heavy version of early '80s German curio "Din Dada" by George Kranz that seems geared to set new records for the amount of drum samples used within the space of a track. From here, proceedings veer off down a classicist vocal disco wormhole - blessed with some modern squelches and groove twists from the Underdog - on "Love Is Da Need" before the second platter opens with the brushed honey soul strut of "So Damn Good." Sir Leonard rounds out the double pack with a slab of '80s disco funk in the shape of the heavy flexing "Just Fakin' It."

Review: It's been a minute but the Underdog finally bites back with 2 Norman Harris produced warehouse classics: 'Are You Ready For This?' & 'Get On Down' that were hammered by both Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy in their day. Neither of these classic cuts were ever released on 12" and both as rare as ****!

Review: A startling re-interpretation of the Stevie track as Underdog goes the extra mile & incorporates a nice sax-blow, not on the original. The B "Reachin" featuring Leroy Burgess & never came on 12" & is super rare to boot!

Review: The Looking In EP marks the return of Brooklyn-based quintet Underground System to local imprint Razor-N-Tape, with a stunning five track release of originals and remixes. It offers a fresh and unique blend of Balearic grooves, left-field funk and up-tempo backbeats that respectfully showcase the US sound. The tracks are complete with the band's signature use of flute and synth soundscapes, driving percussion and catchy vocal hooks that are sure to get you moving. On the B-side of the record, RNT mainstays Nenor and Clive From Accounts deliver two club-ready remixes that take the tracks into even more dancefloor-friendly territory.

You + Me = Love (11:14)
Sandman (4:00)
Review: Recorded in 1976, "You + Me = Love" was a song for Norman Whitfield's Whitfield Records, recorded by The Undisputed Truth. Whitfield, producer and creator of the band, had been at Motown Records for over a decade, and in 1975 left to start up his own record label. They were the first act to follow him from the legendary Detroit label after a lineup change, when Tyrone Douglas and then female lead singer Virginia McDonald left the group. Taka Boom, Chaka Khan's sister, joined longtime member Joe Harris, Calvin Stevenson and Tyrone Barkley. The song reached #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #37 on the R&B Charts, and was the group's one-and-only UK hit - appearing on the UK Singles Chart in early 1977.

Review: Big new track by Unit 4 called 'New Day' which was scheduled to be released on Clone records during the summer but due to delays now only available as white label release. Massive sounding track that follows up on their big 'Body Dub'. This track is in the same vein as their previous release but has a bit more of an electro-techno-ish feel. Nice mixture between Disco, Electro, House and Techno. Great hook line and powerful bassline makes this another essential track. Comes with a nice disco mix by Bangkok impact. Limited edition.

Review: United Disco Organisation have been tapped up by the ATA label for its first voyage into the world of disco. The band is made up of producer and bassist Neil Innes and guitarist and singer Chris Dawkins and here they head off to the cosmos with a classically inclined sound that comes with lashings of Philly soul influences. 'Send The Rain' opens things up and features a fine flute lead from label-mate Tony Burkill. Dawkins's vocals then take the lead over a nice woody, organic groove and an instrumental is also featured. 'Funky Thing' is a glossy, vibes-heavy tune with big melodies and chunky drum funk.

Review: Athens Of The North's faultless run continues with this fresh new 7" from the United Spiritual Singers, about whom we know nothing. It is their one and only release on Discogs and it is from this year, which is remarkable given the authenticity of these super sweet and heart-aching soul sounds. A-side 'Not A Minute Too Late' is a bustling disco number with a funky rhythm section and big, characterful horns powering the groove along. The flip side is a slow, sultry number with plaintive chords and rich backing vocals adding a buttery feel to this real melter.
