Review: Renowned record collector Greg Belson has dug even deeper on this superb follow-up to his essential 2016 gospel disco anthology, "Divine Disco". In truth, very few will recognize any of the included tracks, many of which originally appeared on private-press releases, but that's entirely the point: Belson has chosen to share some of his secret weapons with us and we're delighted. Amongst the many highlights you'll find the sparkling, synth-heavy '80s gospel soul of Calvin B. Rhone, the soaring and celebratory brilliance of Harrison Jones & The Voices Of Harmony, the low-down gospel disco-funk of the Johnson Family Gospel Singers and the Blaxploitation-era hustle of Paradise's "Keep The Fire". Also impressive is Steve Cobby's wonderfully swinging, floor-friendly tweak of Mr Jesse R McGuire's "Jesus Is On The Mainline".

Review: We probably say this more than we should, but this time our statement really isn't prone to hyberbole: we love the Cultures Of Soul label, and whatever genre they're reissuing, we can always count on them to deliver the quality like no other imprint. From Evans Pyramid to the recent black gospel compilation they've released, we have nothing but good stuff to say about them, and this is equally true of this new South African disco collection from the years 1980-1984. The title alone should do the trick but trust us, there is nothing but fire in here, and if you're the sort of collector scouting for rare African rhythms then this is the gear for you. The Cannibals start off with some lovely docile disco jams, Harari's "Party" is a sublime lo-fi funk cut, the Don Laka material is pure disco glory, and the remaining tunes by the likes of Neville Nash or Al Etto are able to destroy ANY dance floor from here to Durban. Top marks from us...

Review: The stripes of selector cognoscenti and soul documentarian Greg Belson are as strong as the vibes on this compilation for the Cultures of Soul label. Covering a ten year period, the snappily-titled Greg Belson's Divine Disco: American Gospel Disco 1974-1984 digs deep from a mine of labels such as Intro, Mopres and Savoy for a fifteen-track selection where raw faith is laid down over a salubrious spread of grooves. Big blues band (Gospel Ambassadors), smooth early '80s boogie soul (Enlightenment) Skyy style sweatiness (Gloria Griffin) or Joubert Singers power (Herman Harris) are all covered with precision crate curation. Our blessing to you Greg Belson and Cultures of Soul.

Review: Cultures Of Soul dig deep into India's funkiest corners with this sophomore selection of Bombay mixes. Rich in range and references, highlights include Asha Bhosie's "Wild Thing" style riffage on "Pass Aao Na", Kishore Kumar's sudden gunshot switches between Mancini and Moroder on "Aaya Sanam Aaya Dweewana Tera" and the ridiculously infectious, stamp-heavy "Dance Music" which more than lives up to its name. A unique collection with attention to detail and sounds that have seldom been heard outside the sub continent, Brother Cleve has done himself proud.

Review: When it comes to shining a light on obscure regional disco and boogie scenes, the crate diggers behind Cultures of Soul are rarely beaten. Their latest killer compilation gathers together little known boogie, electrofunk and J-pop released in Japan between 1981 and 1988. It's predictably brilliant from start to finish, with the squelchy synth bounce and bi-lingual vocals of Hitomi Tohyama's "Wanna Kiss" and the mid-'80s Madonna vibes of Kaoru Akimoti's "Dress Down" amongst the highlights. What's perhaps most impressive is the comparative quality of the tunes; aside from Japanese language vocals, most sound like they could have been recorded and released by New York or Los Angeles-based artists, rather than Tokyo ones. As the old cliche goes, this is "all killer, no filler".
