Trax 25 vs DJ History Vol 3: Trax Re Edited
Cat: HURTLP 098-3. Rel: 04 Feb 11
Adonis - "Down The House" (Toby Tobias & Hardway Bros remix)
Willie Wonka - "What Is House" (Andy Blake edit)
Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Richard Sen edit)
Mr Lee - "Pump Up Chicago" (JD Twitch edit)
Review: Whilst all the vinyl samplers for this DJ History curated Trax Re-edit compilation are worth investigating, it's perhaps this third volume that screams essential the most by virtue of the presence of JD Twitch, Andy Blake, Richard Sen, Toby Tobias and Hardway Bros as the resident re-editors. Nor do they disappoint either as Hardway Bros team up with Rekids type Tobias and introduce some driving energetic synth patterns into Adonis' "We're Rocking Down This House" as well as embellishing the bottom end for a modern day warehouse thumper. Equally good is Cave Painter Andy Blake teasing out the rubbery off kilter undertones to Willy Wonka's spoken word drum machine thriller "What Is House" whilst retaining the raw, stuttering core. On the flip, Richard Sen goes deep on the signature synth stabs to Ron Hardy's "Sensation" which will destroy the more discerning dancefloors out there. Finally JD Twitch strips Mr. Lee's "Pump Up Chicago" of its really quite silly overtones and twists the track into a brilliantly hypnotic and menacing acid tinged late night jacker

Atoz - "Woman" (5:10)
Musta - "Cam Run Sun" (5:30)
Wandervogel - "Thrilla In Manila" (8:12)
Lego Edit - "Agosto D'Amor" (Lego Re edit) (5:37)
Review: Legofunk builds more bridges between beats with another four tracker from various artists. Atoz kick off with a chunky, heavyweight house tune 'Woman' which samples the iconic vocal from Nina Simone's 'See-Line Woman' tune. Musta goes for a more flailing and funky driven feeling on the afro-tinged 'Cam Run Sun' and on the flip, Wandervogel references one of the greatest fights of all-time with 'Thrilla In Manila.' No punches are pulled on this fulsome afro-disco pumper and last of all things get deep, with hip swinging claps and twirling trumpet leads all primed to warm up any club on 'Agosto D'Amor.'

Yen
Review: Supply Records returns with a seventh release which finds Will Martin make his label debut and build on the budding production partnership with John Barera, which commenced with a standout contribution to a various artists 12" on Dolly last year. Much like "Reality" from that aforementioned release on Steffi's label, the four tracks here commence on a disco flecked tip with "Awake" which is filled with driving soulful strings and cracking drums. Classic Rhodes punctuate "Say It Now" whilst the flip shows a different side to the pairing with "Unknown Factor" heading into stab heavy techno territory, whilst title track "Yen" displays Martin and Barera's mastery of haunting atmospheres. Supply meets demand once again!

Black Merlin - "22.05"
White Lodge - "Swung"
Review: Key to the ongoing World Unknown parties has been the sense of community it engenders as a group of dedicated attendees fill the South London dark room every month, and it's from this lot that Blake and Hart have also hand picked some of the artists that have appeared on the affiliated label. After a year off from the slog of releasing records, World Unknown serve up the second of two new releases that features two such talented regulars in Black Merlin and White Lodge. Both the former Bird Scarer graduate and his less heralded B Side partner seem inspired by the work of John Carpenter here - in the case of the former it's the spiraling synth lines married to the kind of chugging beat that gives Weatherall palpitations. White Lodge adopts a more interesting approach on "Swung" an appropriately titled track paced at 6/4 which is described as the "opening salvo in this year's snare roll revival".

Platinum City - "Holy Spirit" (7:35)
Yam Who? & Brian Lucas - "Yah Mo B There" (6:16)
Review: House music's roots are in the church and this new a celebratory various artist collection pays homage to that. The grooves are laced with soulful vocals, churchy chords and big strings that make for grand architecture and grander feelings of joy. Mark Brickman & Yam Who? open with a vocal gem that cannot help but bring a smile, while Wayfaring Strangers pump it up a little more with some funky disco house before Platinum City get you locked in a nice loose, long legged groove that is resplendent with lush keys and big vocal turns. 'Yah Mo B There' has an irresistible 80s vibe and big sing along choruses that will get hairs standing on end.

On The Prowl Presents OTP Party Breaks #7
Latin Box (Marcos Cabral edit)
No Mistake (Kon 2079 mix)
Love Reaction (Jacques Renault edit)
Night Walker (WOOHOO mix)
Review: It's been a while since label bosses Cabral and Renault treated us to volume six but, as always with OTP, its well worth the wait. Cabral kicks off proceedings with a sludgy proto-house number that comes complete with some fantastic chopped up vocal work a la Kevin Aviance. Kon follows with a homage to the disco edit. Not to leave us languishing in the 70s for too long, "Love Reaction" whisks us forward to a packed warehouse in Chicago circa 1989. Big, roomy, boomy and laced with just the right amount of contemporary production, it's Renault at his darkest. "Night Walker" is the final piece of the edit puzzle; woozy, filtered and possibly the best example of a processed Cevin Fisher vocal ever, it's the ultimate funk finale.

Tony Cook & The Party People - "On The Floor" (Underground mix) (4:15)
Review: Oh my - it's number 35 in the RDY edits series, and that means an instant purchase, peeps! These never stick around for very long, and especially when they're as bad-ass as this latest one. So, quick recap, just in case you weren't aware, this series aims to recollect of all legend Ron Hardy's edits; these are the tunes that made house music famous at the infamous Musik Box in Chicago. Italian disco sensations Chaplin Band feature with a subtle edit of "Il Veliero", a melancholic yet charging disco oddity, and the flip quickly heads down more electronic territories with a touch-up of "She Don't Knw I Am Alive" by Willie Colon. Tony Cook & The Party People's "On The Floor" is given a good makeover with that solid, 4/4 beat that contains the dubbiest of drums around. Ya can't miss this...

DJ Dan - "Command Your Soul" (6:04)
Review: US vet DJ Dan is back once again with the Slammin Trax series, bringing some of his spiciest originals and remixes onto vinyl for maximum party damage. "Engine No 9" does a fine job of chopping up a classic hip hop vocal lick and strapping it to a chunky big room house jam. Dan's remix of Bryan Jones brings even bigger levels of hype, not least around the monster breakdown and drop. "Conjunction Funktion" brings a more flamboyant funky flavour to the table without losing that massive impact, and "Command Your Soul" fires off a plethora of riotous licks, samples, hits and stabs while keeping the funk at the forefront.

Everything Is Groovin' On (6:41)
Save That Magic Feeling (Ron Basejam remix) (5:42)
Save That Magic Feeling (Siren remix) (6:30)
Review: You couldn't get more authenticity on one record if you tried... Certified selector dons DJ Pippi and Willie Graff bless the dance with their first official studio collaboration since 2007's "Hyper Space" on Drumpoet. The wait's been worth it; "Save That Magic Feeling" is a purring Balearic deep house soul jam with a strong vocal allure while "Everything's Groovin' On" eases back on a cool low-swung break groove and looped vocal harmonies to seductive effect. Remix-wise Ron Basejam strips it back for an early 2000s Classic Music Company style late night twist while Siren continues the stripped back theme but in a much sleazier, slippery funk way. Magic.

Duff Disco - "I Won't Forget"
We Play - "The Music We Play" (Mam remix)
Larse - "So Much Fun"
Andi De Luxe - "Boobsie Collins"
Review: Dikso, that rightly revered Berlin branch of the international network of vinyl tweakers, unveil their fifth EP of pan European disco meets house moments which commences in fine form with the ubiquitous Duff Disco. The London based producer is cranking up the heat and delivers a finely poised deep house bump on "I Want You" with the glowing chords and delicate keys riding the muscular house groove with real aplomb. The surfeit of angelic cooing that gently ripples in the nether regions has the requisite emotive effect and the belated arrival of some twisting acid just demonstrates his variety. Alongside this, "The Music We Play" from We Play - the latest alias of two producers with far too many to list - gets a French House revision from Leeds based Mam which dovetails nicely with the loose boogie joint that is "So Much Fun" from German producer Larse. Dikso's own Andi De Luxe makes his belated label appearance to round off proceedings with the low slung beatdown sounds of "Boobsie Collins".

Review: William Stuckey's 1979 lost gem 'Country People' gets a modern makeover with a new remix plus a funky new track by East Coast Love Affair to balance out this sweet 12". On the A-side. Love Of Mind features a soulful melody and smooth house beats with a funky edge, creating a dancefloor-ready tune. The B-side of the single features the "Flying Mojito Bros Remix" of Stuckey's 'Country People'. This upbeat remix infuses the track with a lively disco vibe, complete with catchy lyrics. Together, both tracks compliment each other very well.

Mango Sounds, a disco edits and disco-house imprint with a bulging, digital-only catalogue to its name, has finally decided to release a record. Etur Usheo gets proceedings under way in fine fashion with 'Wo Ye Wa (Na Na)', a fine fusion of sparkling nu-disco electronics, driving disco bass and African instrumentation/vocals, before Whatever Charles delivers a lolloping, house style re-rub of a funk-fuelled Afro-disco treat ('African Dialects'). Experienced re-editor and remixer Ziggy Phunk steals the show with vibraphone-laden, proto-house treat 'Blues Grinder', while So.undso's 'Ultrashake' is a celebratory disco-house stomper with added synth squelch.

Mathew Ferness opens this one with 'Paradisio' which has plenty of inspiration taken from late afternoon dances somewhere like Ibiza. 3kelves & We Are Neurotic get you working your feet with the busy percussive grooves and squelchy synth funk of 'Laguna Reservoir Funk' while Naux brings lots of loopy fun and throwback vocal goodness to his steamy 'Foxxy Cleopatra.' Vagabundo Club Social - "Sonico Amor" (7:41)
Review: Perhaps we should think of Whiskey Disco's Small Batch series as their attempt at "artisan disco". Certainly, the re-edits on show should have a few hipsters - and plenty of disco DJs - stroking their hirsute chins in appreciation. Dubtribe Soundsystem's Sunshine Jones kicks things off with the mid-80s synth-pop-goes-acid-house brilliance of "Lovergirl", while regular collaborators Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee doff a cap to Sly & Robbie and Larry Levan on the dub disco vibes of "Love Me Too". Those after some high tempo jazz-funk-meets-disco-house thrills should check Will Buck and PRTMNTO's "I Need Your Love". As for Vagabundo Club Social's "Sonico Armor", it's a hazy, dub-flecked Balearic disco delight.

Review: A top value for money opportunity here, as Moiss Music deliver the latest in their sweet and sticky Jam series of various artist 12" line ups, bringing you no less than six bubbling, vivacious disco triumphs from six artists. Khemir's 'Disco Bandit' kicks off proceedings, a production that sounds like it was made by a band of around 45 musicians, a proper cavalcade of strings, brass, brazen disco thump and beautifully bold vocals. Wurzelholz's 'Prince' goes for a bit more economy but with a slinky funk bassline like that - not to mention the occasional exclamation from the purple overlord himself - it's equally devastating in dancefloor terms. Among the other highlights, 'Golden' by I Gemin has the feel of a lost Daft Punk flip tune and Cosmocomics' 'Glamorous Garcon', boasting 70s-style synth bubbles that are as cute as they are retro. Tasty as ever.

Club Mayz - "Princess Of Excess" (5:26)
WLDV - "Relax & Enjoy" (6:34)
Martin Matiske - "Dimensional Mode" (5:04)
Review: Launched back in 2020, Diamonds in the Night is Bordello a Parigi's multi-artist EP series. This is the fifth volume and, like its four predecessors, is firmly focused on peak-time and after-hours dancefloors. Kick and Enrik Schroeder get things going via the spiralling synthesiser melodies, thrusting sequenced bass and hands-aloft Hi-NRG vibes of 'Mezzanotte' - think Giorgio Moroder on steroids and you're close - before Club Mayz drops the darker, more angular and analogue rich Italo-disco throb of 'Princess of Excess'. Martin Mastike's 'Dimensional Mode' is a more pulsating and cheerful chunk of mi-tempo Italo, while WLDV's 'Relax and Enjoy' provides a suitably surging, clattering and breathless conclusion.

Review: During a record digging trip to South Africa a year or two back, Rush Hour co-founder Antal stumbled on an obscure local cover of Klein & MBO's Ron Hardy and Larry Levan favourite, "The MBO Theme". The Warrior version, which was recorded at some point in the early '80s, is a little slower and breezier than Klein and MBO's original, with even finer fretless bass flavours and the track's famous melodies re-played on some particularly spacey synthesizers. Helpfully, the Klein & MBO version is on the A-side, so you can easily compare the two: Warriors' little known cover is definitely our pick of the pair.

Klein & Mbo - "The MBO Theme"
Warrior - "The MBO Theme"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

During a record digging trip to South Africa a year or two back, Rush Hour co-founder Antal stumbled on an obscure local cover of Klein & MBO's Ron Hardy and Larry Levan favourite, "The MBO Theme".
