Cat: GR 1225. Rel: 04 Nov 19
  1. Bourgie Bourgie (6:05)
  2. Bourgie Bourgie (Joe Claussell Classic remix) (11:15)
Review: It would be fair to say that "Bourgie Bourgie" was one of the 1970s disco scene's true staples. Ashford and Simpson produced numerous versions (Gladys Knight and the Pips' take being the most famous), while John Davis and the Monster Orchestra served up their own typically over-the-top take. It's arguably their instrumental version, though, that remains the greatest take. Here, it gets a welcome reissue backed by an epic interpretation from Joaquin "Joe" Claussell. His eleven-minute "Classic Remix" - effectively a Tom Moulton style 12" rework - does a great job in teasing out the killer drum breaks, flitting between percussive passages and sections that showcase the original's now familiar orchestrated sweeps. It's a fantastic remix that will do wonders on disco dancefloors.

Review: Skull shaking editry at its finest, funkiest and most far out; the Black Bones crew strike again with four more skeleton keys to our collective hearts. "Time 4 U To Retire" is a royal tongue in cheek shot with added dubby weirdness, "Rascal Beatdown" is lavish Latin late night with more breakbeats that you can shake a femur at and "Homeward Bound" is one of the most vibrant, feel-good Italo updates you'll hear this summer. Finally we're sent off to beautiful dreamland with beard stroking delight.

She is also a member of The Clark Sisters, an influential gospel vocal ensemble active since the late 1960s. Originally released in 1981 on Armen Boladian's Sound Of Gospel Records out of Detroit (a sub of Westbound Records), this reissue is on Edinburgh-based Athens Of The North a label run by Euan Fryer aka DJ Fryer.

Review: Very little is known about disco troupe The Devoted Souls besides the fact they have a link with musical director extraordinaire Stu Gardner which is where the original master tapes were found. Pure unreleased gold from 1980, there's a bubbly harmonic soul laced throughout the original with just nuances of a more psychedelic trip while Kon searches even deeper into the cosmos with trippy double ups and blissful breakdowns. Get devoted.

  1. Keep God On Your Side (5:51)
  2. Going Down (Incognito) (6:36)
Review: Previously, Philadelphia outfit Heem The Music Monsters was most famous for the sought-after 1976 psych-funk 7" "Wake Up People". It turns out, though, that the Hubert Willis-produced band recorded tons of other material in the same period, almost all of which has never seen the light of day before. The two tracks featured here are two such examples. "Keep God On Your Side" is a pleasingly sweet and dreamy chunk of life-affirming warmth that sits somewhere between classic Philly Soul and the more conscious vibes of the Mighty Ryeders. B-side instrumental "Going Down (Incognito)" is arguably even better, mixing as it does the inspired fusion of Brit-funk combo Cymande with heavy Clavinet lines, breathy backing vocals and dueling horn solos.

  6. Aro Affair (Crazy Scene) (6:12)
Review: Odion Iruoje aka Sound President was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s, but his solo recording career was restricted to just the one release, Down To Earth. Originally released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, it was only ever distributed in small quantities and Soundway Records have given this much needed re-issue. Iruoje is known for having signed the legendary Fela Kuti to major label EMI and acting as his producer throughout the early '70s. Starting out with the proto funk rap cut "Identify With Your Root (Which One You De?)", there's some killer West African boogie-funk-soulfulness on "Ikebe" and some feel good disco vibes; Lagos style on "Love Care".

Al KENT/VARIOUS
BBE
Cat: BBE 144CLP. Rel: 01 Feb 10
  1. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "Just Can't Help Myself" (5:44)
  2. The Third World Connection - "Hot Seat" (5:14)
  3. Patricia White - "Cosmic Disco" (5:43)
  4. The Midas Touch - "The Nightlife (Let's Get It On)" (5:49)
  5. Smile Street People - "Lypso Disco" (5:54)
  6. Bob Williams - "I'm Alright" (6:09)
  7. JNB - "I'll Be The One" (4:57)
  8. Quinn Harris - "I Will Always Love You" (3:25)
Review: As someone who briefly escaped 70's Glasgow and got a taste of the golden age of NYC Disco, Al Kent is a perfect choice to lead you through a classy selection of some choice and rare Disco treats. Having used his huge collection in the past for re-edits and originals, he also took the bold step of forming his own band in 2007 under the name The Million Dollar Orchestra.

The selections here reflect the point at which Funk and Soul mutated into Disco, with most of the tracks capturing that pre-Moroder organic sound. Lee Alfred's Rockin-Poppin Full Tilting for example has a laid back vibe similar to Curtis Mayfield's more uptempo tunes. New Ghetto Express's version of Standing On The Verge of Getting It On (originally by Funkadelic) up's the tempo on the wigged-out classic, again combing the Funk with a Disco groove.

Lypso Disco by Smile Street People, as you'd guess from the title, has a playful Calypso lilt and bounce to it. Cosmic Disco by Patricia White on the other hand doesn't sound like something that Todd Terje or Lindstrom got their cues from, but it is a fun song with some brilliantly random thumb-piano playing in the background!

Anyone looking for samples will have a field day among these tracks, Sweet Daddy Floyd's I Just Can't Help Myself for example has a break in the middle to die for. You could loop up 4 bars practically anywhere and have something pretty damn funky to work with. For that reason alone, it's well worth having a listen and broadening your horizons.

Lait De Coco (10" + postcard)
Cat: AS 003. Rel: 13 Jul 18
  1. Lait De Coco (vocal) (3:40)
  2. Lait De Coco (dub) (4:00)
Review: Maya's "Lait De Coco", a deliciously glassy-eyed chunk of mid-'80s Gallic pop with a decidedly Balearic bent, has recently undergone something of a revival is serious selector circles. Since copies of original 1987 7" copies have been known to change hands for eye-watering sums online, Attic Salt Discs has done the decent thing and offered up this tasty 10" reissue. Particularly alluring is the flipside Dub, which in true '80s instrumental style flits between spine-tingling ambient passages, delay-laden vocal selections, twinkling piano motifs and an even more glassy-eyed take on the warm and loved-up backing track. That said, the sax-laden A-side vocal version, the epitome of soft-focus European synth-pop goodness from the period, is also superb.

Love On The Shelf (limited 7")
Cat: SDE 022. Rel: 23 Feb 17
  1. Love On The Shelf (3:37)
  2. Bring You Love Closer (3:34)
Review: Over the last couple of years, Super Disco Edits has been responsible for unearthing and releasing previously unheard material from Willie Tee, Brass Horizon and Melton Bolton's Mighty Fire outfit. They've clearly got a great relationship with former Motown songwriter Bolton, as he's handed over two more previously unreleased, disc-era scorchers. "Love On The Shelf" is naturally heart-felt and luscious, with Belton's lead vocals soaring over simmering horns, rolling percussion and a superb, "walking" bassline. Turn to the flip for "Bring Your Love Closer", a seductive chunk of slo-mo soul for those intimate moments. While it lacks the dancefloor credentials of the A-side, it's certainly a smooth and immaculately produced excursion.

  3. Usin' Me (DJ Nature remix) (6:20)
  4. Usin' Me (The Revenge remix) (6:24)
Review: You can always rely on New York's Razor-N-Tape for high quality respectful edits. Cut in Brooklyn, here's another disco killer that is great for dancing - courtesy of JKriv & Aaron Dae out now via their Reserve imprint is Londoner Ali Gibbs aka Nebraska, who tweaks a soulful sample with signature finesse; it's part disco, part house and all vibes on "Usin' Me". Lovebirds then get in on the action to deliver a soulful and bittersweet early Chicago house perspective, the legendary DJ Nature never fails to deliver either and gets properly deep and emotive with his terrific remix. As does Scottish veteran The Revenge on the flip, taking the track into the late night on his stellar effort.

  3. In Search Of The Dream (feat Angela Johnson - Lay-Far remix) (6:36)
  4. Distorting Space Time (Fouk remix) (6:56)
Review: The veteran producer's latest EP, in which a quartet of highly regarded producers tinker with tracks from his vast catalogue, contains some real gems. Top of the pile is Ron Trent's rework of "Distorting Space Time", which is not only typically warm, woozy and percussion rich, but also makes great use of some decidedly trippy, delay style effects. Elsewhere, Crackazat grins his way towards piano house anthem territory via an arms-aloft revision of "Latican Boogie", Lay-Far joins the dots between jazz-funk, boogie and sumptuous deep house on a delightful rework of "In Search of the Dream" and Fouk successfully breaks up the beats on a jazzy and bass-heavy mix of "Distorting Space Time".

Review: French retroverts Unlimited Love are back with their 15th volume of rarities and underground goodies - all taken from the golden year of 1980. On the A side, we have Poncho C. Saint Fingers with his super soulful sleeper hit "When I Come Knocking", followed by Sandi Havens uplifting disco number "Happy". On the flip, you can save yourself at least a hundred bucks and enjoy Smile Street People's island dream that is "Lypso Disco" at a fraction of the cost that this diggers delight usually goes for. Same goes for Sugar Bear Johnson's low-slung jazz funk on "When Your Jones Come Down" which features the most awesome brass section ever.

Third Rock (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: ATH 049. Rel: 26 Oct 17
  1. Third Rock (4:01)
  2. Wake Up (part 1) (4:20)
Review: By Athens of the North's standards, these two tracks from short-lived '70s disco-funk outfit Pure Essence are not that obscure. In fact, label boss Euan Fryer has stated that he chose to lead with album track "Third Rock" because he thinks it is better than the more sought-after "Wake Up". Certainly, "Third Rock" is something of a gem - a warm, California blue-eyed soul style workout full of flanged guitars, jazzy solos and a Steely Dan-goes-disco groove. Of course, the even hazier "Wake Up", with its' politically charged lyrics and immersive production, is also superb. We would expect nothing less from the reliable and on-point Athens of the North.

  3. Zombies In Miami - "Panoramica" (6:36)
  4. Hokaiido - "Talisman" (6:35)
Review: Bizarrely, Running Back boss Gerd Janson describes this multi-artist EP as "a sampler for a hypothetical mixtape". Perhaps he should make that imaginary mix a reality, because all four cuts are quality. Check first the throbbing and pulsating brilliance of Storken's "Lille Vals", which sounds like an Italo-disco obsessive's take on Bobby Orlando's mid-1980s work (with a little NYC freestyle thrown in) before donning your extra-special dancing shoes to shuffle along to Alan Dixon's new dancefloor "Drums Mix" of his synthesizer soundscape "Ambient Braindisk". Zombies In Miami deliver the goods on bleeping, synth-laden nu-disco throb-job "Panoramica", while Hokaiido's "Talisman" offers the perfect combination of delay-laden proto-house drums on steroids, bold freestyle bass and cheery synthesizer melodies.

  3. Right Time (M+M 80s Classic mix) (7:13)
  4. So Good (M+M 80s Classic mix) (6:31)
Review: The involvement of vintage disco mixer John Morales in the making of Tuxedo's eponymous debut album added an air of authenticity to Jake One and Mayer Hawthorne's revivalist '80s funk, soul and disco jams. Here Morales goes one step further, providing a quartet of dancefloor-leaning reworks of album tracks. The A-side features two versions of "Watch The Dance"; a sparkling, full vocal version and the superb, stripped back "Watch The Dub", in which Morales revisits some of his more often-used production tricks of the '80s. Flip for the heavy synth-bass, clipped guitars and D-Train style synthesizer doodles of the anthem-like "Right Time", and Morales' take on album standout "So Good" - a thoroughly positive chunk of '80s boogie goodness built around Hawthorne's sumptuously wide-eyed vocals.

Review: Universal Cave is a record label headed by the Philadelphia trio of Ryan Todd, Brian Hart Cassidy and Shawn Ryan. Their releases range from signature soft rock and AOR to disco, boogie and deep house. The aforementioned Ryan is also one half of the duo Superprince with Jeffrey Levi Fry, who are known for their sharp productions and remixes heard on labels like Moulton Music or Razor-N-Tape - and like on the latter they impress yet again with this collection of respectful edits.
