Review: Passing fashions for jerky post-punk and effervescent dance-pop have elevated this confusingly monikered outfit to hot topic status over the years, but !!! have maintained their own identity throughout. Tapping into a lineage of New York party music that touches on Ze records and Studio 54 whilst also embuing their sound with a punk rock vim and vigour straight from CBGBs, 'Shake The Shudder' might be the most timeless collection of suss, sway and swagger these freaks have put together in their 21 (!) years of filling dancefloors. Chk (chk chk) it out.

Review: If you were one of the lucky few to pick up the illicit compilation A Few More Things From Ivan Smagghe (And Friends) the dapper French selector put out a few years ago you should be familiar with this one. "Civil Defense" by Danny Alias first emerged in 1984, a strange proto-everything-that-has-come-since track which was spun by the great Ron Hardy and has been a long term favourite of Smagghe and his KTDJ cohorts. It gets another lease of life thanks to Smagghe and Leon Oakey's always entertaining Les Disques De La Mort label with no less than five different versions to choose from, including a re-edit from the aforementioned Ron Hardy.

  1. Systems Breaking Down (7:10)
  2. Systems Breaking Down (Dance remix) (6:56)
Review: Reissue specialists Be With have a reputation for unearthing slept-on or hard-to-find gems. Their latest 'find' is Anna's Systems Breaking Down, a fairly obscure, left-of-centre synth-pop cut that's long been a favourite with Italo-disco DJs. This 12" reissue includes both versions from the 1982 RCA 7". The A-side boasts the skewed original, where Anna O'Malley's stylish vocal and frustrated screams intermingle with sustained chords, chiming melodies and fuzzy, downtempo drum machine beats. The real killer, though, is the stripped-back flipside "Dance Remix". Boasting less vocal, delay-laden drum hits and woozier chords, it's this version that has long been a favourite amongst collectors.

Review: London label Apparel Wax comes back after a long summer with another EP, the seventh in its catalogue and yet again another display of four different musical approaches brought together as one. Beginning with the emotive late night deep house of "A1" followed by the smoky, funked-up jazz bar vibe of B2. On the flip, we have some uplifting classic house on "Track 3" which is packed full of swing and infectious hands in the air stabs and closing out the EP is a bit of dusty melancholia influenced by classic Tehro Parrish/3 Chairs kind of vibes. As an added bonus, the label also treats you with a very special branded tote bag.

Review: In the early 1970s, a new musical art form emerged on the streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago from the social unrest of the time. A group of young guys started to combine poetry with drumming and created the musical art form that is known today as Rapso. Lutalo 'Brother Resistance' Masimba was one of the pioneers of this movement and his 1987 anthem "Tonight Is de Night" receives a much-needed reissue here on Cree. There's much to enjoy on this 12" - we're particularly loving the groovy "Rapso Space Dub" and funky steel drum riddims of "Crucial Decision ('92 Version)". This is total spiritual life music.

  1. Black Rhythm Rap (3:39)
  2. Makin' Time (3:46)
Review: Cannon & Mirrorball may not be the disco edit scene's answer to moustache-sporting 1970s/80s comedy heroes Cannon and Ball, but they certainly serve up tracks that will put a big goofy smile on your face. Their latest Disco Bits adventure begins via "Black Rhythm Rap", a chunky, hip-hop friendly rework of an obscure, late 1970s disco-rap bomb rich in funky guitar licks, cut-glass strings and party-starting MC flows. On the flip they get even cheekier, placing Loleatta Holloway's incredible "Love Sensation" vocal over a stomping, Blaxploitation-era disco-funk backing track and all manner of familiar soul and funk samples. Purists will no doubt sneer, but they really shouldn't: this is tastefully produced disco heat of the highest order.

Review: American artist Joe Coleman's soulful boogie-down number "Get It Off The Ground" was released back in 1982 and is still popular amongst those that know. Austrian imprint Record Shack present a hot edit by New York City legend DJ Spinna on this edition, which retains the infectious energy of the original but gives the track some much needed dynamics for modern dancefloors. Although we give credit to the edit, the lo-slung funk of the original will always be king and rest assured that is indeed featured here on the flip.

Review: Having previously dipped into the back catalogue of a host of disco, house and U.S garage acts, Groovin' Records has decided to offer up a trio of tracks from jazz-funk maestro-turned-disco don Eumir Deodato. First up is John "Jellybean" Benitez's superb 1982 remix of "Keep On Movin", a dreamy disco club-cut rich in bold slap bass, swirling chords and sweet female vocals. Benitez is also at the controls on "Keep It In The Family (Remix)', another 1982 rework of one of Deodato's most famous disco-era anthems (check the clips - you'll be singing along within seconds). To round things off, the label steps back to 1978 with the hard-to-find and in-demand 12" version of jazz-funk/disco classic "Whistlebump".

Review: Night or day, we're always happy to receive a new version bundle from the mysterious (not to mention brazen) editors Disco Bits. For their latest excursion "Party Time" takes things out of control with a massive vocal hook every dancefloor knows and loves, "Wick & Lazy" is a ticket on the express to funk town while "Ain't No Cruel Intentions" brings a cruel twist to a Khan and Rufus joint. Finally "Jubilation" brings us all a little closer with solid strums and campfire chorus. Less disco bits and more disco wholes; these will pep up any flagging floor.

  2. Monsieur Business (Aroop Roy rework) (4:17)
Review: In 1976, French band Edition Speciale released their debut album, "Allee Des Tilleuls". While much of the album saw them explore progressive rock and jazz-rock territory, it did contain one suitably groovy and life-affirming trip into jazz-funk territory, surprise LP standout "Mr Business". Here that cut gets a single release for the very first time courtesy of the dusty-fingered diggers at Pepite. You'll find the little-known band's languid, Clavinet and synthesizer-heavy original version on side A, with Aroop Roy's tidy contemporary rework on the B. Aroop sticks a rocket up the track's bottom end, underpinning the original song with peak-time-ready drums while wisely emphasizing his own killer bassline and catchy vocals.

Review: Here's something to set the hearts of all electronic experimentalists a-flutter: a fresh album of experiments on the ground-breaking, ultra-rare EMS Synthi 100 - a hybrid analogue/digital synthesizer first unveiled in 1971 - by Soulwax brothers (and Deewee founders) David and Stephen Dewaele. There's an accompanying 48 page booklet that tells the story of the synth (and in particular the unit the Dewaele brothers used, which is owned by Ghent University), but the headline attraction is undoubtedly the music: a set of undulating electronic movements that slowly tease out interlocked modular melodies, pulsating motifs and even discernible basslines. Sitting somewhere between Terry Riley's synthesizer-based works, Tangerine Dream and the Radiophonic Workshop, it's a gloriously vibrant collection that brilliantly showcases a machine that remains ahead of its time.

  1. Hit It N Quit It (Cratebug & Jamie 3:26 edit remix) (7:33)
Review: Chicago stalwarts Cratebug and Jamie 3:26 were relatively little-known when they joined forces to create this killer rework of Loleatta Holloway's Salsoul classic "Hit 'N' Run" way back in 2011. The interpretation, which laces choice passages of Holloway's impassioned vocal over a loopy and driving house groove reminiscent of Paperclip People's "Throw", first appeared on vinyl as part of Lumberjacks In Hell's now impossible-to-find Chicago Service compilation four years ago. Happily, Salsoul has decided to reissue it on this must-have, single-sided 12". It's more of a remix than a re-edit, and is guaranteed to get things going at peak-time. Basically, it's a banger, and you need it in your box.

  1. Positive Forces (3:41)
  2. All Because Of You (theme instrumental) (3:14)
Review: Acid Jazz has pulled off something of a coup here by persuading legendary '70s soul man Leroy Huston to part with a couple of previously unreleased cuts. A-side "Positive Forces" was recorded by Hutson in 1977 and sits somewhere between the sweeping, orchestrated bliss of Philly soul, the soaring dancefloor celebration of disco and the loose-limbed instrumental goodness of jazz-funk. It's an absolute stunner, all told, and sounds like it was tailor-made for spins at sweltering summer festivals. On the B-side you'll find a previously unreleased instrumental version of 1975's "All Because of You". While a vocal-free version has previously been released, this particular mix includes a little more drum action at the beginning to assist with mixing.

  2. Raw Silk - "Just In Time" (Michael Gray remix) (6:25)
Review: Full Intention man Michael Gray is the latest contemporary house producer to get his hands on the parts to classic cuts from the bulging West End Records catalogue. He has opted to rework two slightly deeper early '80s jams, starting with Mahogany's 1982 boogie cut "Ride On The Rhythm". His version is warm, sparkling and bass-heavy, offering the right balance between modern production techniques and the kind of effects utilized by the track's original producers. It's really good, keeping the spirit of the original track while dragging it into the 21st century. The same could be said of his boogie-house take on Raw Silk's "Just In Time", which boasts a similar balance of tidy new drums, spruced-up synths and swirling effects.

Morales wraps up his two-part edit homage to M&M's unreleased material with slight recalibration's to Teddy Pendergrass, Loleatta Holloway and The Jones Girls, capping off the series with a soft and percussive "Breakdown beat" mix to the soulful and bona-fide hum of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You". T-Pendergrass horns and heat get touched up in a "Yo'u Got What I Need" mix, while the gospel vocals and strings of Loleatta Holloway are extended for a longer disco player. M&M then give The Jones Girls an extended and instrumental work out in their "I Don't Wanna Do It" mix.

  2. Eddie Kendricks - "Truck Funk" (Pablo & Shoey Secret Vaults rejig)
Review: Pablo and Shoey's Downtown Sounds Classics series has previously delivered some righteous reworks of both well loved and little-known gems - the kind of soulful fare that was once a staple of Manchester's legendary Electric Chair parties. Here they deliver two more essential re-rubs. On the A the duo extend Terrence Parker's hazy, soul-flecked 1996 deep house cut "Your Love", emphasizing the loose, rolling, tasteful disco-house groove. It's the flipside the really makes the release, though, as the duo expertly cut-up a long forgotten house bootleg of Eddie Kendricks' "Keep On Truckin". It's this - all hustlin' clav parts, bumpin' grooves and funk guitars - that makes this release so essential.

Review: More top class South American servings for a variety of tropical nightlife situations courtesy of the ever reliable Dylan-Thomas Childs and John McLeod aka The Patchouli Brothers on their 10th release. Treat yourself to another duo of Bahian beauties featured here by the Toronto/Montreal connection (and Beam Me Up residents) on the sultry groove of "Like A Dream". On the flip we have Bernardo Pinheiro: one of the most important Brazilian DJs in activity, with a career spanning 20 years as a creative artist producing and composing. He delivers the lo-slung and sunkissed groove of "Deixar A Peteca Cair".

  3. Track 3 (5:33)
  4. Track 4 (6:17)
Review: The mysterious PPF crew strike again! Four absolute floor gems with no expense spared, the A-side runs amok with big supersized beats and just the right amount of sleaze dripping off every funky note. The lead track goes all wig-out and full on with the organs while a cracking slowed-down take on Alphonse Mouzon brings up the rear. Flip for a fizzy twist on the Crown Heights Affair before the finale pings us between heaven and earth with an almighty reboost of First Choice's "Doctor Love". Prescribe as soon as you can... This won't stay on the shelves for long.

  2. More Loving (4:07)
Review: It's been a minute or two since Renault cooked us something special but here is on Takeaway and it's a premier delivery service. Both pure disco crackers, "Law Of Love" runs with a succulent bassline and writhing pianos running amok while "More Loving" goes for much more of a smoochy end-of-night feel with sultry vocals, an unhurried groove and a big late 70s production feel. Drop it and watch those love birds fly. Feel the love.

Walk (reissue) (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: BBR 015. Rel: 12 Feb 20
  1. Walk (3:29)
  2. Walk (Lord Funk & Moar remix) (4:07)
Review: The latest must-have release from the Boogie Butt camp boasts a suitable obscure chunk of boogie/jazz-funk fusion from 1982. "Walk" was the sole release from the Sam Culley Band and has become something of a collector's item owing to its warming fusion of slap-bass, dreamy synth chords, soulful vocal phrases, jazzy guitars and rich horns. This time round the sought-after original version is accompanied by a remix by Boogie Butt members Lord Funk & Moar. Their revision is a little tighter rhythmically, with extra contemporary weight, but otherwise sticks closely to the Sam Culley Band's excellent original version.
