Review: The wonderful Mr K is back with more edit magic on his own Most Excellent label, this time adding his own spin to 'Wela Wela', a hard edge and raw funk cut from Black Blood, a band of musicians from central Africa but who were based in Belgium. This one was never a hit back in the day for some reason but is built on a killer groove that Mr K reworks and tweaks for more suitable dance floor deployment. It was formerly on his Grass Roots record but now makes its way to a handy 7". On the flip is 'Komi Ke Kenam (Fish & Funjee)' which has tough breaks and funk bass that will ensure 'floors get down and dirty.

Review: Powers That Be is a heavyweight modern funk outfit which counts some serious talent in its ranks. Antibalas drummer and bassist Miles Francis and Phenomenal Handclap Band's guitarist Luke O'Malley are but two of the gifted players laying down a vintage style of deep funk on this sureshot 7" for Mighty Eye. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a holy grail cut from the 70s, given how warm and natural the sound on the record is, but there's also a degree of finesse on both sides of the record which speaks to the band's collective endeavours in pushing classic funk forwards in the modern era.

Review: American DJ and producer Nickodemus commands an eclectic and global sound, mixing EDM with organic instrumentation and vocals through a cross-cultural musical lens. Coming to his very own Wonderwheel Recordings, Soul & Science is a befitting name thanks to the seeming fusion of electronically-programmed dance beats and regional organics, but this is also one of those albums that could also potentially shatter the hard border between the two connotations. Review: Having re-released Rim Kwaku's long lost Rim Arrives album, BBE follow it up with more dusty disco treasures from the Ghanaian hit maker's repertoire. From the blistering horns and thundering drum rolls of the near-nine-minute romp "Shine The Ladies" right the way through the looser, more Afrobeat-focussed "Peace Of Mind" by way of the emphatic Stevie Wonder-style showmanship of "I'm A Songwriter" it's a collection that still sparkles with soul 30 years after they were recorded. Review: There's naturally much to enjoy on the latest volume in Africa Seven's A7 Edits series, which pairs original - and usually obscure - old Afro-disco and Afro-boogie gems with fresh 21st century edits. This time round, the A-side is all about Kemayo & K System's piano and horn-heavy disco-funk jam 'Biram', a two-minute blast of dancefloor exuberance that Phillip Lauer cleverly re-imagines as loopy, locked-in chunk of Afro-disco/disco house fusion. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Afro National's heavy, low-slung stomper 'Push Forward', a cut that brilliantly adds chanted vocals and Hendrix style guitar solos to a sweaty, non-stop groove. Al Zanders does a great job in ratcheting up the tension and heaviness on his accompanying club-ready extension.

Review: During the first COVID-19 lockdown of 20210, London-based afrobeat collective Eparapo, an - all-stars - outfit helmed by Afrobeat Orchestra member Suman Joshi and featuring his good friend Dele Sosimi, remotely recorded a handful of killer cuts. Two of these previously digital-only gems have finally made it to vinyl, accompanied by brand-new remixes. 'From London To Lagos' is an admirable commentary on corruption set to a fuzzy, infectious, Fela Kuti style afrobeat workout, while 'Black Lives Matter' is a slowed-down, stretched out and musically detailed affair that proudly takes aim on international racism. The 'Wheelup Remix' of 'From London To Lagos' cannily re-imagines the track as a tactile, spacey and bass-heavy chunk of shuffling deep house warmth, while Sam Redmore's revision of 'Black Lives Matter' gives the track a more dancefloor focused afrobeat twist.

Review: Almost entirely ignored at the time of its original release, Nigerian drumming maestro Remi Kabaka's legendary original LP Son Of Africa has gone down in legend as the defining solo statement of an incendiary drummer, whose contributions to music across the jazz and rock spectrums is credited and felt strongly to this day. A founding member of Afro-jazz band Osibisa, Kabaka is credited for his work with many a Rolling Stone and Beatle, but it's his solo work on this Afro-funk rare gem that really gets the least easy to please among us going. An Afrofuturist statement to the core, its jubilant vocal chants and defiant trumpet lines are but mere pepperings over the boxy, banging body that is Kabaka's live Afrobeat quads.

Review: Former Whiskey Barons man Bosq has enjoyed a long working relationship with Nigeria-based, Benin-born guitarist and vocalist Kaleta. We make this the pair's eleventh collaborative single in the last decade and, as with their previous outings, it trumphantly blurs the boundaries between Afro-disco, Afro-beat and Afro-funk. On side A you'll find vocal and instrumental takes on 'Meji Meji, a pleasingly live-sounding affair full of rubbery bass guitar, righteous horns, infectious drums and Kaleta's evocative guitar licks. Over on the flip, they opt for even heavier, life-affirming horn motifs, Afro-disco grooves and more sun-splashed Afro-funk guitars on vocal and instrumental versions of the similarly inspired 'Sonayon'.

Review: Reportedly an alias for a former member of legendary, Factory Records-signed outfit The Duratti Column, The Cosmologist is a dub effects loving re-editor whose occasional vinyl missives are always worth checking. Volume five arrives nearly eight years after its predecessor and delivers two undeniably heavy concoctions. On A-side 'Spin', he delivers a deliciously dubbed-out, delay-laden rearrangement of a particularly percussive, NYC no-wave disco outing - all dense, pots and pans percussion, jaunty piano motifs and urgent vocals. Over on side B, 'Water' is a fine revision of an obscure, lesser-known, Kwaito-esque chugger - a kind of synth-sporting, mid-80s cover of (we think) Fela Kuti that sounds like a guaranteed dancefloor winner.

Review: Ever-reliable funk fusionist Bosq has scored another hit here, this time with the help of Favourite Recordings regular Pat Kalla, a talented French poet and singer. 'Mouna Power' is another great example of Bosq's ability to successfully meld together elements of Afrobeat, Afro-Cuban music and tropical grooves, adding layers of colourful instrumentation (bass, keys, horns, guitars and so on). The excellent original version comes backed with a longer, slightly tougher but no less warming and kaleidoscopic 'Dancefloor Dub'. It contains most of the vocals, more percussion and a greater role for the killer bassline and is probably our pick of the mixes

Review: The Sol Power All-Stars are back once more on the Rocksteady Disco label with some superb new covers of much-loved British funk band Cymande. Each one brings a fresh perspective while paying heed of the Afro-roots of the originals. 'Anthracite' (feat Denise Henderson) opens up and is designed for moaner dance floors with cosmic synth work and big, bouncing drums. There is a deeper and more steamy sense of rhythm to the tropical sounds of 'Getting It Back' while the Parkway dub of 'Anthracite' sounds like early house music. Two versions of 'Genevieve' offer shuffling rhythms and big horn stabs and stomping, ass-wiggling Afro-jazz.
