  1. U (I Got It) (4:26)
  2. Cocchetti (5:06)
  3. Cornae (5:01)
Review: There's a fair amount of mystery surrounding this release, which the accompanying press release claims was designed for "cruising through the Tuscany countryside, riding shotgun in a vintage Alfa [Romeo]". So what's on offer? A-side "U (I Got It)" is a bouncy, stop-start disco-house affair that sits somewhere between vintage "French Touch" house, original Italo-house and the pumping antics of DJ Sneak. "Cocchetti" offers a slightly more disco-centric riff on the same all-action formula, with the mystery producer making great use of some seriously soaring 1970s orchestration, while "Cornae" sounds like a cross between Tiger & Woods and the elastic, synthesizer-heavy nu-disco favoured by DJ Rocca and Sare Havlicek.

  1. Dance On The Beat (4:25)
  2. Dance On The Beat (instrumental) (4:23)
Review: Ready for take off? Curious Italo disco gem from lesser spotted alias Boeing in 1982 enjoys a cheeky reissue and you'd be wise to fasten your seatbelts. Sprightly, funky and characterised by a classic, slightly trippy voice-of-god spoken word, cute synth squiggles and a rolling percussive layer that's almost too addictive. Comes complete with an instrumental if the vocal commands are just a little too much for you. Hurry, there's only 500 copies before they fly away for good!

To Be Free (12")
Cat: LMNKV 105. Rel: 21 Feb 19
  1. To Be Free (6:41)
  2. Doing Our Own Thing (9:12)
Review: Back in November 2018, Oli Stewart AKA Casbah 73 delivered his most wholehearted tribute to the disco era yet, the brilliant "Love Saves The Day". On "To Be Free", he continues in a similar vein, doffing a cap to the pioneers of the Philly Soul sound via cut-glass strings, crunchy Clavinet lines, tasty electric piano solos, walking bass and a lead vocal from Angela (Angie) Gooden that stirs memories of disco divas of old. Stewart and his cohort of musicians go a little wild on the mostly instrumental disco-funk flipside, an exercise in dueling solos, lusty Latin horns, flanged guitars and heavy percussion that will get you hot under the collar for nine, all-action minutes. Brilliant stuff from start to finish from the experienced producer: don't sleep on this one.

  1. Hit Or Miss (4:10)
  2. Friends (4:19)
Review: Here is the long awaited new single from Italian soul supergroup Change - some of you may recognise their classic "The Glow of Love" which featured the unmistakable vocals of then frontman Luther Vandross in 1980. After six successful albums throughout the 80's before disbanding and making a brief return in 2010, the group's new single "Hit Or Miss" will appear on their first album in 38 years: Love 4 Love which is produced by Change alumni Davide Romani Mauro Malavasi, it's got the same kind of life-affirming soul power you've come to love from the outfit, and they've still got the knack for a great tune - listen for yourself!

  1. Going Back To My Roots (9:44)
  2. Going Back To My Roots (Danny Krivit Chant edit) (5:37)
Review: While the later Richie Havens and Odyssey covers were far more commercially successful, you can't beat Lamont Dozier's original 1977 version of "Going Back To My Roots" - a near ten-minute workout that starts as a disco-soul stomper, ends as a chant-along Afro-funk stepper, and was arranged by none other than South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela. Dozier's impeccable take takes pride of place on side A of this Groovin' Records reissue, with a fresh re-edit by Danny Krivit - who previously tweaked the Richie Havens version - on the flip. Brilliantly, Krivit ignores much of the song, instead extending and rearranging the sweaty, tropical end section of Dozier's original mix into an inspired track of its own.

  1. Love Freeze (DJ Spinna Re-Freak) (8:57)
  2. Love Freeze (long version) (5:44)
Review: In its original, hard-to-find "long version" form, First Choice's "Love Freeze" is one of the greatest chunks of soaring Philadelphia Soul/early disco around. It was recorded and released - initially in edited form - in 1975. You can find the elusive "Long Version" on the flipside of this essential reissue, which is headed up by an even more epic "Re-Freak" by the effervescent DJ Spinna. Clearly re-mixed from the original master tapes, his near ten-minute version builds slowly, breaks down in the middle, builds up again and finishes with an impressively dubbed-out conclusion. It actually sounds like the sort of floor-focused late '70s remix with which Tom Moulton made his name. That, of course, is no bad thing.

  2. Loving You (4:25)
Review: Athens Of The North return to the disco motherland by way of this scorching groove doublet from Canadian troupe Gratitude. "We Are Here To Party" lives up to its name with vibrant horns and a thumping deep funk focus. Flip for "Loving You", as the name suggests there's a smoother tone and message at play as the band ease us into something a little comfier. Less of a B, more of an AA. Show some gratitude for the tireless AOTN crew!

  1. Harlequin Fiasco (4:05)
  2. Harlequin Fiasco (In Flagranti dub) (4:11)
Review: Newcomer Finnian Langham aka Kayroy is catching ears and hearts on dancefloors from his hometown Melbourne, Australia and beyond. What began as a love of the disco era has grown to encompass everything from obscure deep cuts of 80's synthpop to trippy acid tinged techno. It all comes down to his love of a good tune, and the pursuit of a good boogie on Harlequin Fiasco - following up releases on Whiskey Disco and Sour Edits, the album comes courtesy of French label Hotfoot and is a spaced-out boogie down jam that made us fans from the first beat. We're also loving side B where Swiss duo In Flagranti explores the space between the beats on their trippy dub rendition.

  1. Spirit Of Love (4:41)
  2. Lucumi, Macumba, Voodoo (3:26)
Review: Given the vastness of his back catalogue, you'd think there would be plenty of re-issue-friendly gold buried in Eddie Palmieri's discography. "Spirit of Love", first released as a single in 1978, certainly ticks a lot of boxes: the spiraling, disco-era chunk of boogaloo/jazz-funk fusion remains popular on specialist dancefloors - especially jazz-dance ones - and original copies frequently change hands online for well over 50 quid. Like the original 7", this edition of the singles also comes backed with the sweaty Brazilian style jazz brilliance of "Lucumi, Macumba, Voodoo", which also happens to be the title track of the LP that "Spirit of Love" was plucked from.

  3. ThatManMonkz - "Luh Me On Mi Celly" (6:56)
  4. ThatManMonkz - "Radiation Steppa" (5:51)
Review: A double dose of goodness here, as Whiskey Disco regulars Pontchartrain and thatmanmonkz serve up two tasty new re-edits apiece. It's the former who handles side A. He begins with the breezy, tropical-sounding disco stomp of "La Magie" - all punchy horns, classic disco bass, fizzing synth lines and glassy-eyed female vocals - before brilliantly reworking a suitably obscure disco/jazz-funk instrumental (the suitably spacey "Hey Mariposa"). Arguably even better is "Luh Me On Mi Celly", the low-slung, stretched-out dub disco revision that counts as thatmanmonkz's first contribution to the EP. His second, "Radiation Steppa", is a fizzing, synth-heavy disco-boogie number blessed with passionate male group vocals.

  4. Selection - "I'm So Glad" (4:13)
Review: Having sold out last year when it appeared in limited numbers on shocking red vinyl, Full Time Records' first "Fulltime Factory" EP is being reissued on regular black wax. If you missed out first time around, it's definitely worth picking up. Side A is all about Rainbow Team's sugary-sweet, string-drenched disco shuffler "Bite The Apple". As well as the original version, Full Time has treated us to a brand new deep boogie "Dub Edit" by Massimo Berardi. Turn to the flip for two versions of Selection's inspired "I'm So Glad": a loopy, gently beefed-up re-edit from LTJ and the peerless 1982 original mix, which remains one of the greatest Italian boogie tracks ever made.

  2. Tou't Jou Pa Min'm (1992 version) (4:16)
  3. Cecilia (5:30)
  4. On Jou Matin (4:18)
Review: Labels Hot Mule and Secousse have teamed up to deliver something special: a killer EP of "lost gems from the golden era of Zouk and Gwo-Ka" in Guadeloupe (that's 1985 to '92, fact fans). The four tracks showcased here were performed and produced by an artist whose fame in Guadeloupe sadly never spread any further, Max Rambhojan. The A-side boasts two versions of the rather brilliant and suitably cheery "Tou't Jou Pa Min'm": the jaunty, sun-kissed, whistle-sporting 1986 original mix, and Rambhojan's heavily electronic, synthesizer-heavy, calypso-tinged 1992 re-make of his biggest local hit. Over on side B you'll find the bubby dub bass, sparse synths and flute solos of the decidedly tropical "Cecilia" and a suitably breezy, sunset-ready gem entitled "On Jou Matin".

  2. First True Love Affair (6:08)
Review: Back to 1981 with this absolutely divine piece of 80s funk boogie from Trinidad soul merchant Jimmy Ross. Whether "First True Love Affair" is about matters of the heart or our relationship with our record collections we don't know, but what we do know is that this remains a solid treat for the dancefloor. We also know that Larry Levan's mix still totally slaps in every possible way from the big synth overlays and Q&As and dynamic arrangement that keeps breaking down to the juiciest basslines Levan ever touched. Feel the love.

  4. You Do (Sanctuary edit) (5:57)
Review: Sanctuary's second selection of "Life Classics" - hot-to-trot re-edits championed by serious crate-digging DJs such as Red Greg - arrives some seven months after volume one was released (and promptly flew off the shelves). So what have they got in store for us this time round? Well, EP opener "Stay Together" is a deliciously rich and loved-up chunk of jazz-funk/disco-soul fusion, with dewy-eyed female vocals and ace jazz guitar solos riding a breezy groove, while "All To You" is a fine rework of an '80s soul-era chunk of synthesizer space boogie. Elsewhere, "My Love" is a stripped-back, bass-heavy chunk of heady disco goodness and "You Do" is a storming peak-time affair rich in swirling disco orchestration and urgent vocals.

  3. On & On (Kristin Velvet remix) (5:27)
  4. On & On (Cinthie remix) (5:38)
Review: This valuable reissue of a very early house classic finds criminally overlooked pioneer Jesse Saunders dusting down "On & On" and giving it a fresh sonic boost and some modern remixes to boot. The original is a joy to behold in its raw, lo-fi and pleasantly unhinged burst of original expression, before Paul Johnson comes bowling in with a wild organ bassline powered version that will have fists shaking all over the spot. Kristin Velvet taps into the trippy jacking qualities of the original, turning out a respectful version that celebrates what Saunders laid out in his creative vision. Cinthie then drops a peppy remix that adds some dramatic swagger to the groove and beefs up the hooky bass arpeggio.

  3. Kairo (Boris Dlugosch instrumental edit) (5:54)
Review: Originally released back in 1984, and regularly heard in underground clubs at the time such as Hamburg's legendary club Front, "Kairo" was the one and only EP by the enigmatic Udytu Utzelturk And His Male Harem - on the short lived King Kong Productions. The title track was considered controversial by some, with an Imam singing over an Italo disco style groove. On the flip "Kozak 2000" is a sleazy funk jam. As part of Running Back's 2019 reissue here, Gerd Janson has called upon Boris Dlugosch - one time resident of the aforementioned Front - to deliver the exclusive re-edit duties - and he does a pretty fine job of extending it out in respectful fashion.

  3. Hwe Hwe Mu Na Yi Wompena (Ben Gomori Message Of Love live dub) (5:56)
Review: Afrobeat revivalists Yaaba Funk are getting a welcome new lease of life here, as the Sterns Edits crew turns in a trio of fresh reworks from their largely overlooked 2010 album "Afrobeast". Contemporary broken beat hero Danvers handles side A, turning in a swinging, hot-stepping revision of sun-kissed juju number "Oman Foa" that adds just the right amount of modern dancefloor clout to an otherwise perfect Afro-soul workout. Over on side B, Ben Gomori offers up two versions of "Hwe Hwe Mu Na Yi Wompena": a spacey Afrobeat/Afro-disco style peak-time "Message of Love Edit" and the arguably superior - and certainly impressively bass-heavy - "Message of Love Live Dub".

Review: It would be fair to say that great Italo-disco albums are few and far between. Ago's 1982 debut album, "For You", is undoubtedly one of the rare examples of an Italo-disco artist getting it right across an entire LP. As this timely reissue proves, the artist (and his production team) was more heavily influenced by U.S disco, boogie and early electrofunk than many of his synth-pop and new wave-loving peers, giving the set an authenticity and warm instrumental feel often lacking in similar Italian exercises. You may find the accented vocals a touch tongue-in-cheek, but the choruses are great, the instrumentation brilliant and the production spot on.

Now based in Berlin and joining a huge community of expat producers in the city, the On The Shore LP was indeed influenced by his new hometown. His studio being located right on the River Panke in Berlin's growing Wedding district; an area still not fully in the grasp of gentrification yet and it was these lovely and relaxing surrounds, being surrounded by fellow artists in the studios which fuelled inspiration for this release. Expect a mixed bag of all things slo-mo, low slung, deep and above all funky, for sure!

Review: Second time around for "In Togetherness", a private press gem from 1977 that has recently become popular with dusty-fingered collectors of underground disco and soul. It was originally written, performed, produced and pressed by almost unknown singer Judy Pollak and Michigan-based backing band 33 1/3. This Athens of the North vinyl re-issue follows a recent CD edition by Japanese imprint P-Vine. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the sax-and-synths-laden disco stomp of "Mr DJ" and down low disco-funk headiness of "Fascinating", to the seductive sweetness of Pollack's breathy vocal on "Come With Me" and the sun-kissed breeziness of the brilliant "More Than Words".
