Cat: BBR 019BROWN. Rel: 04 May 21
  1. Revisiting The Sunshine (4:01)
  2. Funky Sensation (4:19)
Review: One of Canada's most influential hip-hop protagonists Jorun Bombay returns to local Halifax label Black Buffalo, an imprint that launched in 2005 with a white vinyl limited 45 issue....Following his recent edit series comes this fantastic cover of RA in the form of "Revisiting The Sunshine". Authentic to its soulful core, the release is perfectly timed as we're all beginning to miss the summer moving into the colder months. It's backed by an equally sunny shakedown version of "Funky Sensation" getting a precision Bombay treatment. Sensational.

Revisiting The Sunshine (reissue)
Cat: BBR 019BLACK. Rel: 04 May 21
  1. Revisiting The Sunshine (4:01)
  2. Funky Sensation (4:19)
Review: Jorun Bombay is one of Canada's most influential hip-hop protagonists and his fantastic cover of the recently turned 80 year old Roy Ayers in the form of 'Revisiting The Sunshine' is one of his biggest tunes. A recent reissue on white vinyl sold out in quick time so now comes another chance to own it, this time on black wax. This one followed Jorun's recent edit series and is authentic to its soulful core. As summer fades away and autumn looms, keep the sunny vibes alive with this golden, heart warming version. On the flip is something just as sunny - a fine version of 'Funky Sensation' that gets a precision Bombay treatment.

Take It To Church Volume 4
  1. Mark Brickman & Yam Who? - "Shined On Me" (feat Venessa Jackson) (7:30)
  2. Wayfaring Strangers - "Get Your House In Order" (6:12)
  3. Platinum City - "Holy Spirit" (7:35)
  4. Yam Who? & Brian Lucas - "Yah Mo B There" (6:16)
Review: House music's roots are in the church and this new a celebratory various artist collection pays homage to that. The grooves are laced with soulful vocals, churchy chords and big strings that make for grand architecture and grander feelings of joy. Mark Brickman & Yam Who? open with a vocal gem that cannot help but bring a smile, while Wayfaring Strangers pump it up a little more with some funky disco house before Platinum City get you locked in a nice loose, long legged groove that is resplendent with lush keys and big vocal turns. 'Yah Mo B There' has an irresistible 80s vibe and big sing along choruses that will get hairs standing on end.

Mango Shake Part 1
  1. Etur Usheo - "Wo Ye Wa (Na Na)" (6:26)
  2. Whatever Charles - "African Dialects" (5:10)
  3. Ziggy Phunk - "Blues Grinder" (6:09)
  4. So.undso - "Ultrashake" (5:49)
Review: Mango Sounds, a disco edits and disco-house imprint with a bulging, digital-only catalogue to its name, has finally decided to release a record. Predictably, there's plenty to savour on the Russian label's first wax outing. Etur Usheo gets proceedings under way in fine fashion with 'Wo Ye Wa (Na Na)', a fine fusion of sparkling nu-disco electronics, driving disco bass and African instrumentation/vocals, before Whatever Charles delivers a lolloping, house style re-rub of a funk-fuelled Afro-disco treat ('African Dialects'). Experienced re-editor and remixer Ziggy Phunk steals the show with vibraphone-laden, proto-house treat 'Blues Grinder', while So.undso's 'Ultrashake' is a celebratory disco-house stomper with added synth squelch.

TDRLTD 002
TDRLTD 002 (limited numbered 12" + insert + stickers + pin)
Cat: TDRLTD 002. Rel: 07 May 21
  1. Paul Johnson - "She Got On Me" (10:51)
  2. Soul Central - "All This Love" (8:15)
  3. Dominic Balchin - "Touch Of Jazz" (6:02)
Review: To our ears, Tropical Disco's recently launched TDR LTD sub-label has much more potential than its' parent, primarily because it focuses on original productions rather than housed-up re-edits. There's certainly plenty to set the pulse racing on the imprint's second release, starting with a new airing of Paul Johnson's 2004 cut 'She Got Me On', a cheery chunk of bouncy, sun-kissed house blessed with distinctively sparkling guitar sounds and a trademark lead vocal from the Chicago house veteran. Over on the flip, British scene stalwarts Soul Central (they of the much-loved 'Strings of Life' cover fame) deliver some beefy, Glitterbox style disco-house cheeriness, before rising star Dominic Balchin closes out the EP via accurately titled jazz-funk-goes-house number 'A Touch of Jazz'.

  2. Y Dah (Sleep D remix - radio edit) (5:02)
  3. South Sudan (Andras remix) (7:37)
  4. South Sudan (Andras House remix) (4:22)
Review: Melbourne based Gordon Koang hails from the Upper Nile region of what is now South Sudan. Accompanied by his cousin Paul Biel, Gordon performs a blend of traditional Neur rhythms and original compositions in English, Arabic and his native language - Neur. He kick starts 2021 by announcing his forthcoming remix EP, which features re-works of tracks from his recent Unity LP on his own imprint Music In Exile. On the A side, we have Butter Sessions' Sleep D serving up a low slung and breezy rendition of 'Y Dah', followed by the Andras House remix of 'South Sudan' which retains that infectious boogie vibe of the original.

Players Paradise EP
Cat: B2R 005. Rel: 04 May 21
  1. Players Paradise (10:22)
  2. Just Realised (feat Locomotives) (7:02)
  3. In Your Eyes I Never Tried (feat Locomotives) (6:35)
Review: Greek producer Lex aka DJ Alex Andrikopoulos is an Athens based artist who has been helping to shape the city's electronic scene for a hot minute. He formally run his own record store and has hosted various events all over, but as this shows he is also a fine studio hand. This latest work comes on Bengoa's well regarded B2 Recordings and opens with a nice tropical and Balearic house beat filled with lush synth work. 'Just Realised' (feat Locomotives) sinks into a more sunset house vibe with smooth grooves and a gentle patter of congas then 'In Your Eyes I Never Tried' pics up the party with a more playful, piano lace vibe.

  2. Sehrazat - "Sevemedim Karagozlum" (4:53)
  3. Leb Harmony - "Feeling Love" (8:39)
  4. Jean Musy - "Danse Dans Le Cabaret" (4:27)
Review: After two sold out first volumes, Obscure & Obsolete are back with a third instalment in their new series. It might have been a while year since the last outing but the wait was worth it as these latest edits are on fire once again. Big Foot's 'Watch Your Step' is a funky disco gem with live drumming and loose perc, then Sehrazat goes for a tighter arrangement that reaches to the stars with its big synth work. The flip-side offers steamy, loved up and intense tackle from Leb Harmony, and there is still time for the jazz licks and clipped disco funk of Jean Musy's 'Danse Dans Le Cabaret.'

One Night
One Night (7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: TTSEV 001. Rel: 05 May 21
  1. PH Edits - "One Night" (Pete Herbert dub) (4:30)
  2. Justin Deighton & Leo Zero - "Bangkok" (dub) (4:31)
Review: 7's Clash is a label that is all about keeping things concise. Over the first clutch of releases the label has established that MO with four or five minute long fat chuggers for laidback but dance-ready floors. First up here, Balearic master Pete Herbert opens with a dub of PH Edits' 'One Night,' which is all bottom heavy, but with flamboyant strings and big chords bringing an 80s vibe. Things get more tropical and driving on the exotic reverse, which is a dub of a big chugger from Justin Deighton & Leo Zero that has crashing hits and razor sharp stabs powering it along.

Review: Another one here from the Pina Edits camp. This Berlin based collective of music aficionados have launched a limited and lovely 7" platform for club-ready flipped classics. On the A side on their sixth edition, we have a properly low slung chugger in the form of 'Soul Tree' which is perfect for the warm-up or afterhours alike, followed on the flip by 'Get Up' with its slow mo tropical polyrhythms, disco guitar licks and dubwise bassline creating for some perfect sunset mood music - tip!

  2. Tubylcy Betonu - "Ye Ye Ye" (Holiday 80 edit) (5:57)

  4. Formacja Niezywych Schabuff - "Centrum Wynalazkow" (Holiday 80 edit) (6:17)
Review: Warsaw duo Holiday 80 polish up versions of forgotten Polish songs. Their self titled EP for The Very Polish Cut-Outs marks the start of a new series of samplers, which will showcase native producers. In this case, The Very Holiday 80 Sampler EP features four new edits such as 'Byles, Jestes, Bedziesz Moj' a groovy Italo-ish re-interpretation of a 1987 song by Krystyna Pronko with some infectious steel drums. On the flip, 'Zaopiekuj sie mna' has a moody and slo-mo boogie down vibe, while an edit of 'Centrum Wynalazkow' shines bright in neon-lit glory.

Never Gonna Stop
Never Gonna Stop (white vinyl 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: ZP 52WHITE. Rel: 05 May 21
  1. Never Gonna Stop (5:13)
  2. Deuzy Vibe (4:22)
Review: Although the Australian outfit Regime roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these -vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

Cat: YNTRO 001. Rel: 04 May 21
  1. Makes Me Wanna (radio cut) (3:10)
  2. Makes Me Wanna (club cut) (3:55)
Review: We have absolutely no idea who's behind this hand-stamped 12" - all involved are keeping tight-lipped - but you should certainly give the clips a listen if celebratory disco-house is your thing. It's a brilliantly bumpin' affair that adds a plethora of classic disco vocal samples to a surging disco, bass-heavy disco-house groove rich in savagely edited orchestral sweeps borrowed from another Salsoul-era gem. It's the kind of in-your-face, arms-aloft affair that sounds like it could have been crafted in the halcyon days of disco-house (the 'French Touch' era) in the mid-to-late 1990s. It's available in radio edit and 'club cut' forms, with the latter offering just that little bit more celebratory goodness.

  14. Ooh Baby I Love You
  15. If I Could Win Your Love
  16. That's My Girl
Review: Georgia-born soul singer Nathan Bartell cut a number of obscure deep funk, soul and disco singles in the 1970s and early '80s, most of which are on the wants-list of some of the world's most enthusiastic and knowledgeable record collectors. Athens of the North is therefore doing a good deed by collecting these sought-after "sides" together on an album for the very first time. The self-titled set does a great job of introducing us to Bartell's soulful world via a mixture of righteous funk floor-burners, emotional slow jams, Southern soul numbers, slick boogie numbers and '80s soul treats. In other words, it's a much-needed retrospective of one of underground soul's genuine forgotten talents.

Review: Produced and sleeked out at Opal Studios in NYC, back in 1975, Buari's self-titled LP has been a cornerstone of international highlife music since it was first released. The original is now an arduous item to find at a decent price, so we thanks the Be With label for having repackaged an essential Afro LP that is a must have for anyone into anything outside a constant beat drum. "Karam Bani" opens with a forceful helping of funk, percussive to to the max, and this same hypnotic groove formula is present across the entirety of the A-side, making this a sampler's dream come true

Review: With this compilation, Grammy-nominated artists and brothers David and Stephen Dewaele aka Soulwax aka 2manydjs usher in a new chapter in the life of their label. Foundation is their 50th release and first compilation album and it features 27 essential tunes, three of which are brand-new and exclusive works. The whole thing plays out like a perfectly sequenced DJ set and traverses nu-disco, synth soundscapes and post-wave grooves that are mechanical and futuristic while also oozing a cool sense of funk and cyborg soul. Despite the breadth and depth of sound, that signature Soulwax sound still unites it all.

Review: Being free of the desire to make regular Soulwax records has allowed David and Steven Daewele the opportunity to develop their own Deewee studio and work with a wide range of artists and musicians on a variety of projects. The results have frequently been released on the accompanying - and never less than essential - Deewee label, which here marks its 50th release with a double-disc retrospective. It's a superb, largely synth-heavy set all told, with the brothers and their talented musical accomplices flitting between a variety of complimentary styles (deep synth-pop, new wave soul, throbbing club cuts, experimental soundscapes, Beach Bots style dream pop and so on) while regularly thinking outside the box. In a word: essential.
