Rock On (12")
Cat: AOTN 12006. Rel: 20 Sep 18
  1. Rock On (Bob Blank remix) (6:29)
  2. Rock On (4:20)
Review: More unreleased gold from Lafayette Afro congressman Bobby Boyd on Athens Of The North. Big 80s boogie funk, "Rock On" delves deep into Boyd's later material with a light Latin flare and a little p-funk sleaze and a full flavoured guitar solo. The main hit, however, is the dancefloor blunderbuss remix by decorated engineer of the time Bob Blank. With a discog that includes the likes of Larry Levan and Arthur Russell, he adds strong shades of proto house to the mix with big kick drums and an arrangement and dynamic that still boots floors and doors down to this day.

The 99.9% EP (hand-stamped 12")

  1. 99.9% (6:15)
  2. Italo Love (6:04)
  3. 99.9% (Andrew Weatherall 100% remix) (9:11)
  4. Take Me To Bedford Or Lose Me Forever (5:33)
Review: Happily, Magic Feet man Craig Bratley is on fine form on this surprise Futureboogie Recordings outing, which we think includes some of his strongest material for some time. Check, for example, throbbing opener "99.9", a body-jacking, Italo-influenced throb-fest that wraps '70s horror soundtrack synthesizer melodies and foreboding riffs around a surging arpeggio bassline. Andrew Weatherall is on hand to remix, delivering a vastly different but rather brilliant interpretation that places exotic, snaking synthesizer melodies and yelping vocal samples over a Love From Outer Space-ready pitched-down groove. Elsewhere, "Italo Love" is an all or nothing tribute to the glory days of Italo-disco and "Take Me To Bedford Or Lose Me Forever" is a top-drawer chunk of intoxicating slo-mo synth-chug.

BAH 046 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BAH 046. Rel: 17 Sep 18
  1. Anacondas (5:38)
  2. Thai City (7:19)
  3. Shadow Dancer (7:13)
  4. Rascals (7:05)
Review: Franz Scala was last spotted on Boredllo A Parigi back in 2016 - he makes the move to Bahnsteig 23 for this bold record of synth pop, early electro and much more besides. "Anacondas" has a cheery tone, all sunny synth lines and a laid back boogie rhythm section, while "Thai City" is more like a scratchy beat track for DJs to get clever with. "Shadow Dancer" is one of the record's stand out moments - a muscular pop burner for all 80s romancers to get emotional and funky to. "Rascals" finishes the EP off with some seriously tough drums and some body-popping electro styles that should go down a storm on the floor.

  1. Pass The Buck (A Tom Moulton mix) (5:27)
  2. Pass The Buck (A Joaquin Joe Claussell edits & Overdub) (9:35)
Review: Tom Moulton's fabulous mix of Love Committee's "Pass The Buck" was never given a proper 12" release back in 1978, instead making its way onto the band's debut album, "Law and Order". Here it finally gets an airing across a side of a record, with a new "edits and overdubs" revision by Sacred Rhythm boss Joaquin Joe Claussell on the flip. The latter builds on the soaring, grandiose power, swirling strings and urgent group vocals of Moulton's classic version, building from a layered, densely percussive start towards a sweaty conclusion via waves of instrumentation, swirling synthesized strings and everything-but-the-kitchen sink production. It is, then, a thoroughly brilliant rework of a classic - if under-celebrated - disco cut.

Do I Do (remastered) (hand-numbered 12" reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: FTM 201703BLACK. Rel: 20 Sep 18
  1. Do I Do (7:15)
  2. Do I Do (instrumental) (6:32)
Review: It's fair to say that Maurice's McGee's "Do I Do" is something of an Italo-disco classic. It was initially released back in 1983 on Full Time Records, and featured the man himself - seemingly an invented alias for a local Genova singer recruited by the prolific Studio G production team - telling a tale of missed parties and late night opportunities over a backing track that sits somewhere between the all-arpeggio grooves of Italian disco and the slick, synth-heavy warmth of '83 New York boogie. On this timely reissue, the extended vocal version (remastered to sound extra loud) is accompanied by the arguably superior Instrumental take, which wisely highlights clipped disco guitars and the superb, synth-heavy groove.

  1. Moodena - "Gil's Groove" (5:25)
  2. Sartorial & Moodena - "Turn It Up" (6:43)
  3. Sartorial - "6 Million" (6:16)
  4. Sartorial - "Feel The Heat" (6:47)
Review: Label heads Sartorial and Moodeena present the latest volume in the suitably summery Tropical Disco edits series, with the latter kicking things off with "Gil's Groove", a wonderfully positive revision of a Brazilian jazz-funk jam that underpins the original electric piano solos and sun-kissed instrumentation with spacey electronic flourishes and a head-nodding house groove. It's followed by a storming, sax-laden collaborative re-edit romp, as the scalpel-wielding duo gets to work on a familiar disco-funk smasher producing their version which features plenty of filter tricks and a rock solid rhythm track. On side B, Sartorial takes the spotlight, first delivering a soaring disco-house cut rich in swirling strings and funk-fired guitars ("6 Million"), before successfully tooling up a bouncy, head-in-the-clouds disco number ("Feel The Heat").

Cat: MTN 43. Rel: 19 Sep 18
  1. Cuffari (Make The World Larger Than Me) (4:16)
  2. Dancing (Jumbo) (Em Vee edit) (5:29)
Review: Over the years Moton - the label run by Darren House aka Diesel and Dave Jarvis - has become synonymous with releasing great quality edits from a range of amazing producers. Their 43rd release is no different, offering up two glorious edits ready made for the dancefloor. On the A side we have the lo-slung and sensual slow burner that is "Cuffari" (Make The World Larger Than Me) that is powered along by a powerful vocal performance that will have you singing along in no time! On the flip, things get down to a funky groove on the late night boogie-down vibe of "Dancing (Jumbo)" edited by Lumberjacks In Hell's Marcel Vogel.

Jacuzzi Rollercoaster (heavyweight vinyl 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: VF 2913. Rel: 19 Sep 18
  1. Jacuzzi Rollercoaster (feat Ali Love) (6:44)
  2. Can't Hang On (6:07)
Review: There's no doubt that Roisin Murphy struck gold when she joined forces with Maurice Fulton earlier this year. The pair's latest single - the third in the series, if our calculations are correct - is another quirky disco classic in the making. Smooth title track "Jacuzzi Rollercoaster" features Murphy's distinctive lead vocal and Fulton's trademark instrumentation (rubbery bass guitar, flash-fried funk guitar flourishes, loose beats and mangled Clavinet motifs) being bolstered by some slick, soulful backing vocals courtesy of Ali Love. B-side "Can't Hang On" tips a wink to Fulton's eccentric house project Syclops - or his productions for spouse Mu, for that matter - with a squidgy acid bassline, madcap electronics and wild percussion solos combining to devastating effect.

  2. Love, Love, Love (4:53)
  3. If You Wanna Be A Beggar (4:05)
  4. Somebody's Watching (4:02)
Review: What began as a reissue of their long lost album Rude Movements by BBE in 2016, then the lost tapes of Mike Collins last year, has now led to more unreleased excavations from Brit funk pioneers SunPalace. Four in total, each track tells its own singular inherently UK tale; "Dancing The Night Away" is an upbeat disco thumper with shades of proto house creeping in on the choruses and "Love, Love, Love" hits with new romantic saviour faire. Meanwhile on the flip "If You Wanna Be A Beggar" fuses pub ready vocals, laced with hint of 80s boogie, over playful Afrofunk beats while "Somebody's Watching" closes on a Cure-like mournful funk note (albeit with slightly creepy lyrics). Sunny side up!

  1. Love Sensation (7" version) (4:13)
  2. Love Sensation (acappella) (3:35)
Review: A quick glance at the epic list of credits accompanying this Su Su Bobien single confirms its impressive musical credentials. Produced by DJ Spen, Thommy Davis and Michelle Chiavainni, it's a cover of Loleatta Holloway disco classic "Love Sensation" featuring specially recorded strings, horns, drums, bass and guitar. It's pretty faithful to the Salsoul original all told, even down to Tony Montana's string arrangement, though it does feel a little looser, warmer and groovier than Holloway's full throttle take. The brilliance of Bobien's vocal is confirmed by the flipside acapella, which boasts just the right amount of delay and reverb to get the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention.

  1. Jump Trax (125 BPM To 107 BPM) (5:25)
  2. Jump Trax (111 BPM To 125 BPM) (5:29)
Review: Pivotal proto house music from the Chicago motherland; Duane Thamm Jr's 1984 12" was revolutionary as he provided two killer transition pieces that would have been gold dust to DJs at the time. The titles explain themselves; A side jump track "125 BPM To 107 BPM" takes us from a euphoric Italo hook to a sultry smouldering vocal finale while B side jump track "111 BPM to 125 BPM" goes from theatrical and a little trippy to an all out disco explosion. Good transition tracks are still hard to find but this would have blown minds back in 1984. A serious piece of history right here.

Review: Kalita Records announce the first ever and definitive discography of Carrie Cleveland. Here, they offer an expanded version of her 1978 album 'Looking Up', including both the issue and promotional versions of her single 'Make Love To Me', and the previously unknown sweet soul single 'I've Got A Feeling'.

Privately arranged, recorded and produced by Carrie and her husband Bill as a labour of love in their backyard studio in 1978, 'Looking Up' is one of the most in-demand soul/disco LPs in existence, sought-after in particular for their track 'Love Will Set You Free'. In addition, the promotional version of Carrie's single 'Make Love To Me' is one of the best and rarest sweet soul records to have emerged out of the West Coast soul scene, and her single 'I've Got A Feeling' is until today virtually unknown even to the most seasoned of collectors, with even Carrie herself unsure if it was ever released. With the album originally pressed in a limited run of just 1000 with 500 copies of each single, original copies of Carrie's records deservingly command eye-watering figures on the second-hand market. Kalita now satisfy the thirst with the first ever official reissue of her entire discography.

The CD is accompanied by a mini-poster and includes extensive interview-based liner notes and never before seen photos, detailing Carrie and Bills' life and musical career.

Review: During its lifespan, sadly departed London club Plastic People had it all: an intimate space to dance, an astonishingly good audiophile sound system, and a crew of resident DJs that included the mighty Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's sets there, which ran for a minimum of six hours, have naturally become the stuff of legend. Three years after the club closed, Parrish has decided to release the recording of his final set there - a thrillingly free-wheeling, three-disc voyage that dizzily and gleefully joins the dots between jazz, soul, disco, funk, deep house, acid, techno and much more besides. The three discs capture Parrish at his most lively and esoteric, providing a musical journey that will delight dancers and armchair listeners alike.

Left sided pop (Man Tear "Night Fantastic"), 21st century blues (Baba Stillz "LOVE"), dusty lofi warehouse rattlers (Qaadir Howard's "Bloodied & A Mess"), trippy seaside love songs (DJ Koze "Hawaiian Souldier") dreamy pastoral strums (Superpitcher's "La La La Land") and slinky dubby acid (Axel Boman's dub of Adrian Lux's "Teenage Crime") are just some of the charming, freeform and high spirited styles and shades on offer here. Pure bliss.
