Time For A Change (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: ATH 055. Rel: 20 Nov 17
  1. Time For A Change (3:25)
  2. Time For A Change (Hot mix) (3:24)
Review: In the sales notes accompanying this latest slice of 7" gold from Athens of the North, boss man Euan Fryer admits that he spent a good "four or five years" trying to locate an original copy of "Time For Change" before finally tracking down original singer Benita. She was more than happy for him to reissue the record, which is one of the most inspired and well-made disco-soul records you're ever likely to hear (how it remained a lost classic, we'll never know). Benita's lyrics and vocals are superb, the horns are punchy, and the B-side "Hot Mix" contains one of the best slap-bass solos you'll ever hear. In a word: essential.

  1. La Massagiste (3:39)
  2. Exotique (2:18)
Review: Steamy Brazilian disco soul from provocative dancer/actor Wilma Dias. "La Massagiste" takes off where Painel De Controle's "Relax" left us three years before in 1979. Sultry and slinky with Wilma's breathy French purring over a shiny, loose-strummed funk groove "La Massagiste", it sits sweetly between euro disco and pure Latin soul. "Exotique" raises the heat with a throbbing funk riff, vibrant horns and more direct spoken dulcets from the cult figure herself. Scorchio.

  1. Expresso (Yam Who? rework)
  2. Expresso
  3. No Big Thing (Bottin remix)
  4. No Big Thing
Review: Perpetually locked into a disco groove, Pete Herbert has already impressed this year with the splendour of his releases on Nang alongside Martin Denev, but on this new 12" for Riot Gear he's stepping out on his own. The record actually leads in with the plush, romantic throb of the Yam Who? remix of "Expresso" before the original takes over with a more peppy, borderline hi-nrg approach. On the B side Bottin gets to take "No Big Thing" to task with a version rich in electro funk synthlines, while the original sports some piano house chops and enough sizzling dancefloor energy to ignite a ruckus in a retirement home.

  1. Hit It N Quit It (Cratebug & Jamie 3:26 edit remix) (7:33)
Review: Chicago stalwarts Cratebug and Jamie 3:26 were relatively little-known when they joined forces to create this killer rework of Loleatta Holloway's Salsoul classic "Hit 'N' Run" way back in 2011. The interpretation, which laces choice passages of Holloway's impassioned vocal over a loopy and driving house groove reminiscent of Paperclip People's "Throw", first appeared on vinyl as part of Lumberjacks In Hell's now impossible-to-find Chicago Service compilation four years ago. Happily, Salsoul has decided to reissue it on this must-have, single-sided 12". It's more of a remix than a re-edit, and is guaranteed to get things going at peak-time. Basically, it's a banger, and you need it in your box.

  1. Don't Care (7:06)
  2. Raw Data (6:48)
  3. I Can Be You (6:47)
  4. You Can't Play That (6:22)
Review: Guillermo Gonzalez aka Hotmood is a funk/disco producer from Mexico. Recently on fire with a string of releases for the labels Star Creature, Whiskey Disco and Tugboat Edits, Hotmood shows no sign of letting up with four more disco edits for the London based Editorial label. "Don't Care" is a certain sought after classic from 1979 which has previously been a favourite of Joey Negro. On the flip, there's one that will really appeal to those in the know on the saucy and electric boogie-down jam "I Can Be You" that sampled the same hook as a certain J.B. Boogie hit from a little while back. Finally he offers up a right lo-slung gem in the form of "You Can't Play That". This slo-mo jam is so funky and looped to perfection. A bunch of respectful edits for those that know their disco history and for serious DJ use only!

  4. TCB Band - "Children Of The Future" (3:53)
Review: Premier revisitations from hot to trot Parisian love station, the ninth edition continues to dig deep into the realms of the long-lost and highly collectable. The lead track, KIC's "Don't You Want My Love", for example, now fetches triple figures. Elsewhere SPG's "Loveland" is a fly-by-night falsetto funk shakedown while 24 Karat Gold's rare "New Love" struts with stunning string stabs and an energy that flares from zero to glitterball in two bars. TCB Band's "Children Of The Future" closes the sneaky session with a sweet harmonic hot chocolate soul. Blink and you'll miss it.

  1. Mike Lowrey X SMBD - "Supreme Flava" (4:49)
  2. JKD - "Dream Machine" (SMBD '79 disco edit) (4:55)
  3. Kleeer - "I Love To Dance" (SMBD '79 edit) (4:28)
Review: UK imprint GAMM are back, following up great edit action by Nick The Record, Monkz 'N' Simz and Krewcial now with SMBD aka Simbad. He is back with the second volume of his seasonal themed reworks on the label. On side A we get a big dancefloor bullet where he teams up with Mike Lowrey and they fuse John Coltrane with Craig Mack on the hypnotically funky groove of "Supreme Flava"- this one works perfectly! On the flip, he re-edits a classic disco jam by JKD Band entitled "Dream Machine" (SMBD '79 disco edit) which will be appreciated by those in the know. Finally, a handy modern revision of disco supergroup Kleeer's "I Love To Dance" (SMBD '79 edit) is what we'd call a respectful edit, indeed. This London based editor's work has built him a solid reputation worldwide, making him a very sought after producer and a busy DJ.

Beggar Groove (hand-numbered 12" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: ICP 289. Rel: 20 Nov 17
  1. Beggar Groove (9:34)
  2. Ain't Nothing But A Groove (9:53)
Review: LTJ Experience has always been at his best when working at a slower tempo. He's particularly good at crafting slow-burning, sample-based groove epics that rely on hard-worked loops and subtle changes. Happily, that's exactly what he's delivered here. On the A-side you'll find "Beggar Groove", a wonderfully bass-heavy affair that peppers a languid, bongo-laden groove with swamp funk style harmonica and whispered vocal samples. He's back in head-nodding disco territory on the flip, serving up a low-slung groover that subtly doffs a cap to The Revenge's Instruments of Rapture-era output. In other words, he's back to his best.

  2. Lady, Lady, Lady (Mr K instrumental edit) (6:35)
Review: Supreme edits from the one and only Mr K: "Boogie Land" explores the insane p-funk gold of Ike Strong with full emphasis on the obese walking bassline, gutsy backing vocals and layered riffs, all extended with hypnotic glory. "Lady, Lady, Lady" is a dramatic rearrangement of the instrumental version of Boogie Man Orchestra where the pianos and strings are placed centre stage and squeezed for every ounce of drama and disco theatre. Insanely good.

Review: When Congolese musician Albert Siassia moved to Paris in the early 1980s, it wasn't long before he joined forces with a local reggae band that he re-christened Tokobina ("Let's Dance" in the Lingala language, fact fans). Together, they released a handful of inspired but now notoriously hard-to-find records, from which two of the tracks here are taken. There's "Mama Africa", an unashamedly positive dancefloor workout full of glistening, South African style guitars, dub disco grooves, bustling, rumba-influenced percussion and Siassia's headline-grabbing vocals, and "Pointe Noire", a superb chunk of new wave/Afro-disco fusion that's arguably even better than the EP's title track. The other two tracks have never before seen the light of day on any format, having been rescued from long forgotten demo cassettes. Of these, it's the Congolese reggae sweetness of "Sangi (Demo Mix)" that hits home hardest.A killer first release from a new label brought to you by one of the Sofrito Crew Hugo Mendes

Review: Given the depth of his record collection, you'd expect crate-digging hero Andy Smith to be able to put together a rather good disco and boogie compilation. That's exactly what he does here. Named after his disco-themed DJ collective, Reach Up does a great job in joining the dots between familiar anthems (Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", World Premiere's "Share The Night", Freedom's break-diggin' fave "Get Up & Dance" and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk smash "Holding Me Tight") and slightly deeper, often overlooked selections (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). Smith's mix on disc one is typically smooth, entertaining and on-point, while the unmixed second disco offers an opportunity to own the same cuts in full-length, DJ-friendly form.

Review: In recent times, crate-digging hero Andy Smith has turned his attention to the world of disco and boogie, showcasing the depth of his collection as part of the Reach Up collective. It seems fitting, then, that his latest compilation - a triple-vinyl epic - should explore the disco and electrofunk gems lurking in his vast vault of records. There are a few well-known gems (Disco Dub Band, World Premiere, Freedom and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk anthem "Holding Me Tight", for starters), but far more overlooked or slept-on gems (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). The collection also boasts a couple of tasty re-edits, including an unheard one by Smith and pal Nick Halkes of Jimmy Ross's Paradise Garage anthem "First True Love Affair".

Review: The recently departed Leon Ware is the undisputed king of boogie. The man has released some of the most foundational albums of the disco offshoot genre, and it's probably thanks to him that we've even got electro blasting out of speakers these days. Be With reissued his fourth LP, from 1981, the timeless Rockin' You Eternally, which is a must-have for pretty much anyone who is into ANY style of dance music. In short, it's the absolute truth. "A Little Boogie (Never Hurt No One)" is basically the tune which gave boogie its name in the first place, all bouncy and full of electronic bass, while the rest of the A-side, made up utter classics like "Baby Don't Stop Me" or "Our Time", provides some of the most driving, heartfelt disco-soul known to man. The title track, "Rockin' You Eternally" is as sensual as it is masterfully produced, but our favourite has to be "Don't Stay Away, a luscious, string-led disco monster with an early electronic edge. This is some pioneering business, right here. Elektra's finest.
