Dancefloor Edits
Cat: LGF 005. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. The Funk District - "In Our Minds" (6:08)
  2. The Funk District - "Kwaku's Line" (6:41)
  3. Lego Edit - "Funky Nassau" (7:23)
  4. Lego Edit - "Soul Power" (Lego edit 5 AM) (6:31)
Review: The young but ever more promising Legofunk label continues in its fine stride with a fifth EP here. It is again packed with sexy edits, the first two of which takes tunes by The Funk District. 'In Our Minds' is straight ahead funk with warm bass and lively rhythm section, while 'Kwaku's Line' cuts loose on big brass stabs, flailing percussion and atmospheric, live sounding vocals. Flip it over for two Lego Edit jams, the first is 'Funky Nassau' which is as you would expect from the name, an afro edit bristling with vitality and then a nice soulful party starter in the form of 'Soul Power.'

One Plus One
Cat: ZEDD 12304. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. One Plus One (Dave Lee extended club mix) (8:25)
  2. One Plus One (Dave Lee Boogie Boy dub) (6:24)
  3. One Plus One (Dave Lee reprise) (5:35)
Review: Now going by his given name of Dave Lee rather than his obviously problematic previous alias Joey Negro, the Z Records boss has not showed any dip in form since the switch. Here he serves up three of his legendary mixes, this time tackling an unearthed and unreleased Leroy Burgess tape that was recorded in the same sessions as 'Heartbreaker'. 'One Plus One' is the sound of an artist in his prime, with lush backing singers adding buttery warmth to the lead vocals, big instrumentals filing your soul with joy and noodling bass driving things along. All three mixes are superb and subtle in equal measure.

Love Hangover
Cat: GCV 001. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. JN - "Love Hangover" (Micky More & Andy Tee Disco Blend) (6:50)
  2. The Sunburst Band - "New York City Woman" (Micky More & Andy Tee Disco mix) (7:12)
  3. The Sunburst Band - "New York City Woman" (Micky More & Andy Tee Piano intro) (1:18)
Review: Italy seems to have no end of edit labels and now Groove Culture throws its name into the hat with this inaugural release. It finds Micky More & Andy Tee team up over three different cut and paste jobs, with JC aka Dave Lee aka Joey Negro's version of Diana Ross's classic 'Love Hangover' up first. Little changes but for the re-sung vocal, more strident groove and drawn out break down, but that's still enough for you want to hear it. The Sunburst Band's 'New York City Woman' then gets a rework which is deep and steamy for the late night hours, and an a cappella is also served up to close things out.

Cat: JALP 725. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Elevator Groove (5:02)
  2. Samuel's Rumba (3:43)
  3. Sauna Funk (3:23)
  4. Northern Lights (6:04)
  5. Kuja's Disco (2:45)
  6. Party Boat (4:10)
Review: Three years ago, Finnish nine-piece Kuja Orchestra delivered a superb album of funk-fuelled mutations of jazz, Afrobeat, Latin jazz, dub and psychedelic rock. It was rather good, though undoubtedly criminally overlooked. Happily, the DJ Doe-based outfit has finally returned to action via a delightfully positive and entertaining six-tracker on Jazzaggression. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the Afro-tinged, jazz-dance-friendly brilliance of 'Sauna Funk' and the warm jazz-funk flavours of 'Elevator Groove', to the rousing dancefloor hedonism of 'Kuja's Disco', and the fittingly titled fun of celebratory closing cut 'Party Boat'. From start to finish, the collective combines superb grooves with some seriously good solos and horn arrangements.

Salam (numbered hand-stamped 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: CUTMR 006. Rel: 30 Nov 20
  1. Salam (Marsupials Refold) (5:48)
  2. O Boso (Marsupials Refold) (5:30)
Review: Marsupials are an Italian disco trio comprised of Massimiliano Miele aka R.O.D., Marcus Raute (Marco Gioiello) and Luigi Giomini - who altogether head up Cut My Records out of sunny Naples. Included here on CUTMR 006 are two superb edits, with the Afro boogie of 'Salam' (Marsupials Refold) reaching near spiritual moments, followed on the flip by the hypnotic and dubbed-out disco vibe of 'O Boso' (Marsupials Refold). This is limited to 200 copies in a green cover and hand-stamped label - don't sleep on this one!

  1. Moodena - "The Rattlesnake & The Ant" (5:19)
  2. Frederik Hendrik - "Westepark Cafe" (6:03)
  3. DIY - "Feelin Jazz" (5:10)
Review: Tropical Disco are back, with Sartorial inaugurating a new series called Collectors Edition. This first one is an awesome various artists EP, packed full of fine disco edit delights. Up first is label co-owner Moodena taking over the A side with the bass-driven soul funk of 'The Rattlesnake & The Ant', which will hypnotise you with its infectious groove. On the flip, Amsterdam's Frederik Hendrik gets on an Afro kind of vibe with 'Westepark Cafe', followed by Nottingham-based veteran free party collective DIY with some sensual late night deep house on 'Feelin Jazz' - a highly sought after classic from 2003.

Street Talk
Street Talk (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 108. Rel: 30 Nov 20
  1. Street Talk (5:29)
  2. Street Talk (instrumental) (5:11)
  3. Street Talk (Rune Lindbaek Discomix) (7:43)
Review: Emotional Rescue continues to trawl through the bulging back catalogue of Noel Williams' Miami-based Konduko label, which the celebrated producer first launched to showcase his productions as King Sporty. 'Street Talk' hails from 1983 and saw Williams join forces with a hastily arranged group of backing musicians dubbed the Extras to craft a canny chunk of electrofunk rich in spacey synths, wild guitar solos and sweet female backing vocals. This edition pairs the original mix with the even more spaced-out dub on the A-side, with Rune Lindbaek delivering a brand new 'Discomix' on the flip. The Norwegian's version is even more spaced-out and cosmic, drenching the original's rapped vocal phrases and synth sounds and delicious amounts of reverb and delay.
