50 Rappers Who Changed The World: A Celebration Of Rap Legends
Cat: 863929 Rel: 01 Jan 90

112 page hardcover book
Notes: Arguably one of the most mainstream music styles today, rap was in fact born centuries ago in West Africa with historians or 'griots' who used to tell stories of the past over the beat of a drum. But it wasn't until the 1970s in New York that rapping as we know it was born and began to flourish.

50 Rappers Who Changed the World profiles some of the genre's biggest influencers, from the 1970s until the present day. From groundbreaking groups like Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five and The Sugarhill Gang in the 70s, to Run-DMC and Public Enemy in the 80s, Biggie, Tupac and Snoop in the 90s, and Eminem and Jay-Z in the 00s, this is a history of music for anyone who loves rap. Featuring MCs like West Coast legends including N.W.A. and Ice-T, and countless women who changed the game, like Salt-n-Pepa, MC Lyte and Missy Elliott. And today, we have a new breed of artists who are dominating the charts, from Kendrick Lamar to Drake and Cardi B.

Filled with a stylish illustrations and short biography of each artist, this book is a celebration of the musicians who shaped the genre and changed the world.

A Soft Hiss Of This World (by Tim Ingold, Carmen Pardo & Mikel R Nieto)
Cat: 765375 Rel: 11 Jun 20

paperback book
Notes: The research project "A soft hiss of this world" is focused on the loss in many aspects such as the loss of language as a result of the Anthropocene through the absence of certain states and processes that occur naturally in the environment like different states of water, snow and ice. In Finnish there are more than forty terms* to refer to them and because of the loss of these states in the landscape, the loss is also displaced to the language, in this case, the Finnish.

This research project took these words as a starting point to make hundreds of hours of recordings in the Finnish landscape. The sound of snow, ice and snowflakes are the reference and the sound material of this research project. And to obtain these sounds, as well as the possible sound differences between each snowflake, special and specific microphones were developed for this very specific and fragile recording process.
This book contains texts by three authors: Tim Ingold, Carmen Pardo and Mikel R. Nieto, on the research carried out by Nieto in Finland during 2016. The text by Tim Ingold opens the book and introduces the reader to the main subjects of the research: language, landscape, sound and listening. This text is easy to read and aims to immerse us in the Finnish landscape and in the listening act to its sounds and silences. Carmen Pardo's text unfolds first, the way in which the gaze and listening of the snow constitute the experience of a disappearance, of a concentration in the void or nothingness of which A Soft Hiss of this World participates.

The third text belongs to Mikel R. Nieto and is divided into four parts. The third part is a code that reflects the loss of most of the sound recordings made during his research with more than 600 hours of recordings. This code is the only thing that could be recovered from all recordings, except the only sound recording published in physical format as a transparent Flexi-disc.

The fourth part is the result of silencing each and every word by John Cage in his "Lecture on Nothing," leaving only the punctuation marks, such as commas, periods, separators and the last sentence of the text of Cage. Every time the transparent flexi-disc is played, the player needle wears away the vinyl and making the sound of the recording disappear. Therefore, each listening destroys the sound."

Andrei Bely: The Princess & The Knights (James Ginzburg Translation)
Cat: 864477 Rel: 22 Feb 22

53p hardcover book
Notes: Andrei Bely - The Princess & The Knights (James Ginzburg Translation)

Written between 1909 and 1915, this collection of poems by Russian symbolist master Andrei Bely is available in English translation for the first time. While loosely thematically linked, these psychedelic pieces create a kaleidoscopic and fragmented coherency out of the shattered stained glass of romantic tales of chivalric knights. This limited edition is a faithful recreation of the first edition, which was published in 1919 by Alkonost in St. Petersburg, and follows Bely's experimental typography. Bely used visual devices in his poetry as a musical score, guiding the reader's recitation, and is generally considered the first Russian poet to experiment with the layout of text, having perceived it as an essential dimension of the poetry itself.

Author Biography: Andrei Bely (1880-1934) was a Russian author, poet and essayist best known for his novel Petersburg, which was regarded by Vladimir Nabokov as one of the four greatest novels of the 20th century. Often associated with his symbolist peers, Bely's writing, with its colourful, mysticism inflected, and virtuosic prose and poetry is singular. Bely was a close follower of Rudolf Steiner, and while deeply influenced by him, Bely's personal syncretism gave rise to a metaphysical expression within his work that is distinct from Anthroposophy.

Choosing Death: The Improbable History Of Death Metal & Grindcore (by Albert Mudrian)
Cat: 760273 Rel: 20 Dec 19

Revised & expanded 384-page paperback book on the history of grindcore and death metal - with introduction by John Peel
Notes: In 1986, the idea that death metal and grindcore would ever impact popular culture was unimaginable. Initially circulated through a scattered tape-trading network of underground thrillseekers, bands rose from every corner of the globe and death metal and grindcore spread faster than a pandemic plague of undead flesheaters. By 1994, the genre's most prominent labels had sold millions of albums. Choosing Death examines the rise, fall, and resurrection through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists and entrepreneurs behind the movement. Features forewards by JOHN PEEL and SCOTT CARLSON (Repulsion). 384-page heavily-illustrated dexluxe softcover books with 16-page colour section.

Cuba: Music & Revolution: Original Album Cover Art of Cuban Music: Record Sleeve Designs Of Revolutionary Cuba 1959-90, compiled by Gilles Peterson & Stuart Baker
Notes: 'Cuba: Music and Revolution: Original Album Cover Art of Cuban Music: Record Sleeve Designs of Revolutionary Cuba 1959-90 ' is a stunning new deluxe 250-page large format hardback book compiled and edited by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) that features many 100s of stunning and unique Cuban record sleeve designs made since the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959. These album covers have rarely been seen (nor heard) outside of Cuba and show a rich previously hidden history of both music and design.

'Cuba: Music and Revolution' is the first ever book about Cuban record sleeve design and has been five years in the making, made in full co-operation with the Cuban government. The record sleeve designs reflect both the rich cultural Latin musical legacy of Cuba, as well as the political and aesthetic influence of revolutionary Communism, which manifests itself both in the music created on the island and the artwork of the designs included here.

Cuban music is the source of much Latin music in the 20th century. Salsa, the all-encompassing Latin music that came out of New York in the 1970s, and soon spread across Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and elsewhere, owes all of its success to the Cuban music on which it is fundamentally based.

These record sleeves help document the dramatic change in Cuba's identity from that of 1950s tourist paradise to socialist state. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the United States imposed a trade embargo which exists to this day, and as a consequence the many 100s of Cuban records featured here have rarely been seen outside of Cuba.

The book is edited and compiled by Gilles Peterson, BBC broadcaster, record label owner, DJ, record collector, founder of Worldwide FM and Stuart Baker, founder of Soul Jazz Records. Together they have edited two earlier critically-acclaimed music and design books 'Freedom, Rhythm and Sound - Revolutionary Jazz Cover Art 1965-83' and 'Bossa Nova and The Rise of Brazilian Music in the 1960s'.

In conjunction with the deluxe book, Soul Jazz Records will be releasing an album also compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker, charting the rise of Cuban music in the 1970s and featuring many of the artists who appear in this book.

Cat: 872342 Rel: 28 Apr 22

Hardcover book
Notes: Since the late 1970s, Nigel Ayers (b. 1957, UK) has cut a bracing, subversive path through the contemporary underground, bridging DIY industrial enthusiasms with multimedia experimentation to form a singular body of work. Co-founder of the groups The Pump and Nocturnal Emissions (along with brother Daniel Ayers and then-partner Caroline Kaye), Ayers has been a contributor to and proponent of industrial music's high-water marks, his Sterile Records imprint disseminating not only NE sides but also defining work from Lustmord, SPK, Maurizio Bianchi, and others between 1979 and 1986. In 1987, Ayers inaugurated the Earthly Delights label with the now-canonical Caroline K recording Now Wait For Last Year, and the imprint has since served as Ayers's primary outlet for releasing new work, whether as Magnetizdat, Spanner Thru Ma Beatbox, or Nocturnal Emissions, a going concern to this day. Published, designed, and produced by Ross Waitman and Amaya Productions in collaboration with the artist, ELECTRONIC RESISTANCE compiles mail-art, collages, assemblages, flyers, slides, video stills, ephemera, record and tape covers to present an arresting cross-section of the genre-sundering art Nigel Ayers created between 1980 and 1992. It features an introductory reflection from Ayers, as well as an essay entitled "Bleeding Images: Antipsychiatry, Death, and Mind Control" by art historian and critic Nicholas Ballet (Universite Paris-1 Pantheon-Sorbonne), contextualizing Ayers's work and extensive career

Heavyweight Champion, by Amos Childs & Sam Barrett
Cat: 798279 Rel: 04 Nov 20

Paperback book
Notes: Mechanical Reproductions stay true to their original mission statement of being 'an outlet for editions of vinyl and print' and, for their third release, serve up a 48 page archive of some of the posters created by Young Echo's Amos Childs & Sam Barrett for the long running nights the collective have been running since 2010.

'Heavyweight Champion is the result of six years' collaborative collage works for Bristol's Young Echo collective.

The collective's 12 members have been running club nights, radio shows and releasing music since 2010. Two of them, Amos Childs & Sam Barrett (who also make music together as O$VMV$M), have been responsible for creating the posters to promote the club nights since the start.

These posters are a regular fixture in the visual landscape of the city, on walls, bins, bus stops and pretty much any other available surface in the lead up to each event. Their informal visual language immediately sets them apart from the other flyers vying for attention. They're intriguing: through not having the artist names featured as prominently as possible they encourage the viewer to take a deeper look. There's dense layers of images and cut-and-pasted phrases to be deciphered - ultimately a far more engaging experience than being shouted at by a generic and large-fonted neon specimen.

Thanks to the local council (and keen fans who would rather see them on their walls at home), more often than not these works are gone soon after they're tacked up, meaning the only archive of them is as low resolution images on various social media channels. 'Heavyweight Champion', then, aims to provide a lasting document of this unique and vital part of Bristol's musical culture...'

48 page, A4, full colour book, 100gsm evolution uncoated inner pages.

Kirk Brandon: Confessions, Lyrics & Nostalgia by Iman Kakai-Lazell
Cat: 878695 Rel: 10 Jun 22

The 5th book in a series of custom made, books by Persian artist, Iman Kakai-Lazell - featuring icons of Arts & Entertainment in a way never-before seen
Notes: This is the 5th in a series of custom made, books by Persian artist, Iman Kakai-Lazell - featuring icons of Arts & Entertainment in a way never-before seen.

Working closely with each artists, the books feature, collages, never seen before photos, manipulated with original lyrics & confessions.

Each release is extremely limited and will never be repressed.

From the author:

"In these series of confessions, lines and lyrics desires come through in a form of dreams, events and more. The individual is able to express themselves in a way they haven't been able to. And more importantly for me to add my interpretation to each piece. I hope you love reading these as much as I have creating them... No 4. I present... Kirk Brandon"

Kirk Brandon started his music career in 1978, in Clapham, London with the formation of punk group The Pack.

The Pack consisted of Brandon, Scottish-born drummer Rab Fae Beith, Simon and Jon Werner on guitars.

Brandon then formed post punk/new wave band Theatre of Hate in 1980 recruiting Stan Stammers on Bass, Nigel Preston on Drums & Billy Duffy on Guitar and John 'Boy' Lennard on sax. Theatre of Hate disbanded in 1983. Brandon and Stammers were then joined by Lascelles James on saxophone and Chris Bell on drums to form Spear of Destiny. The new band adopted a more melodic and less aggressive sound, distancing themselves from post-punk and moving a little more towards mainstream pop. While continuing to explore the political ideas that he wrote about in Theatre of Hate, Brandon's lyrics for Spear of Destiny dealt more frequently with the classic pop themes of love and romance.

In 2003, Brandon did a solo tour as support to The Alarm on their 'Poppyfields' tour.

In later years he performed in the punk supergroup Dead Men Walking, with an ever-changing line up which has featured - Dave Ruffy (The Ruts), Billy Duffy (The Cult), Mike Peters (The Alarm) Captin Sensible ( The Damned), Pete Whylie (Wah), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Mick Jones & Topper Headon (The Clash) Duff McKagan (Guns & Runs) Lemmy (Motorhead), Mike Scott (The Waterboys), Ian McNabb (The Icicle Works) & Roddy Frame ( Aztec Camera), amongst many others.

Brandon has also reformed Spear Of Destiny in 2007 and 2008. Brandon continues to tour with both Spear of Destiny and Theatre of Hate, as well as a revamped Dead Men Walking, and solo acoustic shows.

Iman Kakai-Lazell was born in Iran and moved to London, England at an early age. She studied at Chelsea College of Arts, specialising in Public Art.

Iman has had many exhibitions in New York & London, with a yearly solo residence at The Baltic in Borough - 2010-2016. She now resides in Arnside, Cumbria.

La Capture De L'inaudible by Matthieu Saladin
Cat: 784382 Rel: 24 Jul 20

Software Edition on SD card in a Silkscreen booklet, including a text by Jonathan Sterne
Notes: La capture de l'inaudible, conceived by Matthieu Saladin, is the edition of a software acting like a reverse MP3 encoder. Where a classical MP3 encoder removes inaudible frequencies to reduce the size of an audio file, the reverse encoder gives these frequencies to listen, removing what the mp3 format usually keeps.

The software comes on a SD card, going along a booklet with a selection of texts on the inaudible, and a text written by Jonathan Sterne.

The SD card contains also the whole Artkillart catalog, re-encoded with Matthieu Saladin's software.

Tracks created with the software can be archived online, only on user's request, and participate to the constitution of a global inaudible library.

Led Zeppelin: Experience The Biggest Band Of The 70s: by Chris Welch
Notes: Led Zeppelin - a band unique in the history of rock 'n' roll. They were the biggest, the loudest and the best for an amazing ten-year reign in which they conquered the entire world with their heavy riffs, legendary performances and pioneering sound. But there was a serious side to the band, and their music was not simply bashed out - as songwriters and performers they knew no equal for a decade. The Story of Led Zeppelin recounts the history of the band in words from a man who witnessed many of their finest concerts, images from the cream of contemporary photographers, and rare memorabilia that is hugely evocative of the era.

Let's Put It To Music/20 Years Of
Cat: 710807 Rel: 04 Jan 19

224 page book with 7" vinyl
Notes: After having borrowed lines from Jimi Hendrix and English poets for all previous anniversary releases we struck out for this one until Kim, well after the deadline, accidentally stumbled over Johnny Cash and "Forever Words: The Unknown Poems". "Let's Put It To Music" quite nails it when it comes to the basic idea of the book and how we approach the whole process of making a record.

As Tim Gane is quotet in Adrian Shaughnessy's introduction "a Stereolab record was never finished until the cover was done". That rings true for Rune Grammofon as well, and we would like to add that a sleeve is never designed for the sole purpose of selling a product (it took 28 releases before an artist was pictured on the sleeve!), or necessarily reflect the music in any way (is that even possible?), but rather to establish a suggestive relation between the two, often based on the album title or a song title, but not in an obvious way.
After some 200 releases, I can't remember Kim ever "explaining" a sleeve design, and I can't remember me ever asking him. It's no secret that label founder Rune Kristoffersen is a big admirer of labels like Blue Note, Impulse, ECM, 4AD and Factory, to mention some labels with strong visual identities. But we can't recall another label that has worked with one designer exclusively for 20 years and 200 releases.

The exclusivity was a premise for our collaboration from the very beginning, but we certainly never had any expectations about how long we would be able to keep it going. Especially when considering that Kim is occupied on a number of arenas; as photographer, filmmaker, illustrator, painter, writer, musician, dancer and choreographer.
As one will discover, the book is far from being a catalog lining up the releases (it's not even "complete" or chronological in that sense), but gives an interesting insight by also including sketches, rejected designs and unused ideas that never left the drawing board... until now. Lists are a source of controversy, as Hedvig Mollestad discusses rather well in her text.

We haven't had much time for them either, but with the resurgence of music literature on all sort of subjects, they seem to have come alive again. And with the eclectic mix of artists on the label, why not give it a try? We figure the main funcion of lists is to arouse curiosity and hopefully lead to new cultural discoveries, which can only be a good thing. The idea of including a 7" single also came late and would depend on getting at last one track real quickly. To our delight, we miraculously ended up with what is surely three of the most beautiful tracks in our catalog, and all exclusive for this release.

Tracklist:

Side A:
1. Fire! Orchestra - Enter, Part One (With & Without Fire!)

Side B:
1. Maja SK Ratkje - Sja, Amioda
2. The Last Hurrah!! With Nora Zheng - Blues In Chinatown

Omniverse by Jimi Tenor
Cat: 879627 Rel: 10 Jun 22

Hardcover 200 page book
Notes: Born in Lahti in 1965, Jimi Tenor changed his name from Lassi Letho to Jimi Tenor in reference to his favourite instrument, the tenor saxophone, and out of admiration for the musician Jimmy Osmond. After school, he began studying music before finally moving to New York, where he worked as a souvenir photographer on the Empire State Building. During this time, Tenor continued to work on his music in his apartment, creating what he considers to be a very idiosyncratic mixture on the border between house, jazz and experimental pop music. His solo debut Sahkomies (1994) helped to establish an exciting artistic career, which has now lasted for over 30 years.

A techno pioneer in the 1990s, Tenor turned primarily to his love for jazz from the 2000s, recording an album with Afrobeat legend Tony Allen and collaborating with several orchestras.

As the first part in the new series Sounds, Sights & Stories, Omniverse uses photos and stories to document the various stages of life and work of Jimi Tenor, whose work goes far beyond his music - from photography and filmmaking to instrument making and Fashion design is everything imaginable in the world of probably the first Finnish pop star.

Hardcover - 200 pages.

Piercing Red by Lena Platonos
Cat: 869791 Rel: 01 May 22

Collected poems and lyrics by Lena Platonos from 1994-2008
Notes: The poetry of groundbreaking Greek artist Lena Platonos takes centre stage in Piercing Red: Collected Poems and Lyrics 1984-2008. Best known for her radical electronic music compositions, her innovative work as a poet has been underacknowledged, in no small part due to writing and singing in her native Greek. This book was put together to rectify this lapse, to help encounter her song lyrics on their own as literary work. Collected here are all the poems Platonos put to music over four decades, appearing for the first time in English thanks to loving translations by Stathis Gourgouris. Careful attention was paid to Platonos's phrasing so that the unique voicings and surrealist imagery would come forth intact. With their rapid-fire juxtapositions and dreamlike narrations, these poems are gestural and performative evocations of the artist's vast inner world. They are performances of her soul in the realm of words. Book design and typography by Eloise Leigh.

"Platonos's poetic musings across the collection draw inspiration from her home in Athens - a place steeped in classical history. She evokes the architecture and mythology of the city, creating ambient space with an ambivalence to emotions. The energy throughout is delicately cohesive, the artistic vision is strong, and the beautifully delicate narrative exists as if lost in time." - Emily Hill, The Vinyl Factory

Prince: by Matt Thorne
Cat: 851254 Rel: 01 Jan 90

Paperback book
Notes: Legendarily reticent, perverse and misleading, Prince is one of the few remaining 80s superstars who still, perhaps, remains unexplained. Now a firm fixture in the pop canon, where such classics as 'Purple Rain', 'Sign o' the Times' and 'Parade' regularly feature in Best Ever Album polls, Prince is still, as he ever was, an enigma. His live performances are legendary (21 Nights at the O2 in 2007) and while recent releases have been modestly successful at best, his influence on urban music, and R'n'B in particular, has never been more evident. The Minneapolis Sound can now be heard everywhere.

Matt Thorne's Prince, through years of research and interviews with ex-Revolution members such as Wendy and Lisa, is an account of a pop maverick whose experiments with rock, funk, techno and jazz revolutionised pop. With reference to every song, released and unreleased, over 35 years of recording, Prince will stand for years to come as the go-to book on the Great Man.

Queen Of Nowhere
Cat: 877739 Rel: 27 May 22

Embossed hardcover book with 132 pages
Notes: "Queen Of Nowhere" is the result of the photographic works by Kourtney Roy and the musician Dayve Samek (Trance Farmers) initiated by IIKKI, between November 2021 and March 2022.

The man behind the name Trance Farmers is Dayve Samek, a wanderer from Los Angeles to Louisiana, and his music has picked up just about every influence it can along the way. He has recorded his first album in 2014 on Leaving Records (Stones Throw Records). Not sure how to classify his music ranges, but something between sweaty, garage-born ballads brush shoulders with drifter anthems and gasoline drenched doo wop with at some points some beats close from the past Anticon works should make the point.

The Canadian photographer Kourtney Roy was born in Northern Ontario in 1981. Intrigued by the possibility of creating a tragic mythology of the self, she conjures an intimate universe pervaded by both wonder and mystery. Her photographer's eye is drawn to places and settings whose lyrical qualities underscore the sublime banality of everyday life.

Roy's studies in photography, at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver and later at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, inspired her to develop her finicky aesthetic, which lends itself particularly well to both glossy paper and film. Roy works extensively as an independent photographer/filmmaker in the art world. Instilled with a dark sense of humor, taking their clues as much from the grotesque nature of seemingly placid settings as from the tensions simmering just under the surface, her photographs have garnered many prizes, including the Prix Picto in 2007, The Emily Award in Canada in 2012 and the Prix Carte Blanche PMU/Le Bal in 2013 and the Pernod Ricard Carte Blanche in 2018.

Notes: Something And Nothing is the second volume in the autobiography from David Gedge of Wedding Present fame. The stories featured in this stunning 176-page matt-laminated, hard-back book have previously only been available to readers of the Tales From The Wedding Present comic book series. This collected edition comes with 100 pages of never-before-seen additional material and an introduction by Craig Cash.David writes the Tales From The Wedding Present narrative together with long-time musical associate Terry de Castro, and then the stories are illustrated by virtuoso artist Lee Thacker. For the past decade, they've been working steadily (along with editing help from Jessica McMillan) to relate David's life and adventures.Something And Nothing is presented in chronological order; it takes up where Volume One left off - just after the release of The Wedding Present's first single 'Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy!' in 1985 - and takes us through the next three years of the band's existence. David writes intimately about all of the events leading up to the writing, recording and release of the band's classic debut album, George Best, as well as detailing sessions that the group recorded for John Peel [including the legendary Ukrainian folk music ones], early live appearances in the UK and the rest of Europe and the development of their label Reception Records. On the way, we also learn about some of the romantic experiences that may have informed his writing.

Something And Nothing will be launched at the Louder Than Words literary festival in Manchester in November 2022. The release will be accompanied by a live Tales From The Wedding Present tour of seated venues in the UK which will feature Terry interviewing David, an audience Q&A, and a 45 minute semi-acoustic set.

Spectres: Composing Listening Volume 1
Cat: 724907 Rel: 12 Mar 19

228 page book with thread-sewn softcover, produced by Shelter Press in association with INA GRM
Notes: This book has been conceived as both a prism and a manual. Following the "traditional" arc of electroacoustic composition (listen-record-compose-deploy-feel), each of the contributions collected together here focuses in on a personal aspect, a fragment of that thrilling territory that is sonic and musical experimentation.

Although the term "experimental music" may now have be understood as referring to a genre, or even a particular style, we ought to hold on to the original use of this term, which was based more on an approach than on any particular aesthetic line to be followed. The experimental is first and foremost a spirit, the spirit of the exploration of unknown territories, a spirit of invention which sees musical composition more as a voyage into uncertain territories than as a self-assured approach working safe within the bosom of fully mapped out and recognized lands.

With texts by:
