79: The Ska Revival Dance Craze: Essays From The Frontline by Gary Bushell
Cat: 946503 Rel: 10 Aug 23

'79 ska revival book by Gary Bushell; 300 pages for fans of Madness, The Selecter, The Specials & The Bodysnatchers
Notes: 300pp, Black & White illustrations.

It's forty years since the Specials took the pop world by storm with their infectious mix of Ska rhythms and punk attitude. Madness and The Selector followed close on their heels. Within a matter of months the 2-Tone bands had stolen our hearts and conquered the charts with a non-stop procession of unforgettable hits: 'Gangsters', 'A message to you Rudi', 'Too Much too Young', 'The Prince', 'One Step Beyond', 'My Girl', 'Too Much Pressure'...

"Your last chance to dance before World War Three," Specials singer Terry Hall called it. An exaggeration of course, but 2-Tone served up the most perfect pop since Trojan reggae dominated the UK charts a decade earlier. And the bands kept coming - Bad Manners, The Beat, The Bodysnatchers. Even Judge Dread came back! Garry Bushell was the first rock writer to see the Specials live, the first to interview Madness and the first to watch the bands attempt to export their magic to the USA. This book is his collected dispatches from the front line during that exciting, exhilarating rise of the rude boys.

The Ska, Rock & Mod revival of the late Seventies early Eighties put life and laughs into a politIcally grim UK scene. Journalist Garry Bushell was on the front line, working for Sounds and Dance Craze magazine, and was present to witness all of the critical events.

All About Disco Music Book (Japanese Text)
Notes: This is a groovy little guide to all things disco - a Japanese discography that focuses on key club records from a number of different generations. As you'd guess from the title, the core focus here is the seventies - and possibly the early eighties - represented by listings of a variety of albums and other releases. The book sets out a few artist-based sections for folks like Chic, Jellybean, Jocelyn Brown, Earth Wind & Fire, and others, and also features some DJ's Choice sections, and Essential Disc Guides throughout. There's plenty here to wet your appetite, including a full colour section of rarities at the beginning, plus lots of other text and interviews in Japanese.

Ballad Of The Fan (by JC Brouchard)
Cat: 430279 Rel: 04 Jul 11

The story of the 80s indie group told by their fan (and fellow Creation artist) JC Brouchard.
Notes: Felt, the British band started by Lawrence in Birmingham, released twenty records in the 1980s on the Cherry Red and Creation labels. Hailed by the press, Felt made its mark on the independent music scene in Britain, topping the indie charts in 1985 with the "Primitive Painters" single.

In "Ballad Of The Fan", JC Brouchard chronicles the story of Felt through their records and puts it in parallel with his own experience as a fan. He first followed the band from afar, before he met up with them in England, put on their first gig in France and tagged along with them on a European tour.

JC Brouchard is the identity bestowed in 1984 upon Pol Dodu by Alan McGee, the Creation Records founder, when he made him his spiritual advisor and that of his band Biff Bang Pow! JC had his own Creation single release with Biff Bang Pow! in 1986 and was celebrated by the same band with the 1987 single "The Whole World Is Turning Brouchard!". "Ballad Of The Fan" is the first book published by the "renowned eccentric archeologist from Reims", as "Melody Maker" once put it.

Chocolate & Cheese (by Hank Shteamer)
Cat: 422663 Rel: 04 Apr 11
Notes: Ween now seems like a permanent fixture on the pop-cultural landscape, but when the band first hit MTV in the early '90s, their longevity wasn't so secure. Nearly two decades on, though, Aaron Gene Ween Freeman and Mickey Dean Ween Melchiondo preside over one of the most devoted cult fan bases in American music. So how exactly did Ween manage to transcend joke-band oblivion? One answer is that, in the years following their MTV breakthrough, Ween gradually polished their output, turning their staunchly primitive musical sketches into hi-fi paintings. Chocolate and Cheese, released in 1994, marked Freeman and Melchiondo's first crucial steps in this direction. Based on new, in-depth interviews with both members of Ween, as well as producer Andrew Weiss and associates ranging from Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) to Spike Jonze, this book explores the song-by-song creation of Chocolate and Cheese and how the album served as a bridge between Ween's original two-guys-and-a-4-track incarnation and the rich, virtuosic rock & roll force they would later become.

Circles: The Strange Story Of The Fleur De Lys
Notes: As part of their successful 'Rare Mod' series, Acid Jazz have once again turned their hand to book publishing with 'Circles: The Strange Story Of The Fleur De Lys', Britain's Forgotten Soul Band. Following on from the number one bestselling biography of the Small Faces by Paolo Hewitt, this time, as a companion to the forthcoming Fleur De Lys EP 'The Two Sides of The Fleur de Lys' the label shines a light on one of the legendary and perhaps most unsung mod bands of the 1960s. The book charts the Southampton group's journey from humble beginnings to becoming the first British band signed to Atlantic Records. Hits with Sharon Tandy as well as their astronomic version of The Who's 'Circles' and their own psyche masterpiece 'Mud In Your Eye' (both of which sell for well over £600) have earned The Fleur de Lys their rightful place in the mod pantheon. Authors Paul Anderson and Damian Jones have interviewed every surviving member and tell a fascinating story of sublime talent, missed chances and mismanaged business opportunities. Names like Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Aretha Franklin and The Who weave in and out of the story and the result is a must for 60s fans, soulboy and mods as well as anyone with an interest in youth culture.

Four Stories (by Allen Ravenstine)
Cat: 731248

Paperback book containing four stories by Allen Ravenstine
Notes: Slim, 44-page perfect bound, paperback containing four stories. Illustrated by Mary Thomas. These four stories were written while Allen was working and touring with the Cleveland band, Pere Ubu, and refer directly to those years. Previously published in The Cleveland Edition, The Re Records Quarterly and The Penguin Book of Rock and Roll Writing. Allen Ravenstine was born in Canton, Ohio in 1950. In 1968 his parents were killed in a car crash. He was a student at Ohio State University when students protesting the Vietnam War were shot at Kent State. All universities in Ohio closed, so he left Columbus, where he was studying English literature, never to return.

In the following years he worked with an EML analogue synthesizer and a Teac four-track tape recorder and in 1974 bought the Plaza, a ramshackle apartment building in Cleveland's inner city, which soon became the home of painters, poets, writers and musicians. In 1975, he co-founded the legendary Cleveland band, Pere Ubu in which he worked until 1988... leaving to become an airline pilot.

Taking up music again in 2012, he appeared with Robert Wheeler in the film 'I Dream of Wires', recorded two album length records, 'Farm Report' and 'City Desk'. In 2014, he released his first solo CD, 'The Pharaoh's Bee'. The critically acclaimed 'Waiting for the Bomb' followed in 2018. Allen lives in New York City with his wife Ann.

Full Watts Book #1
Full Watts Book #1 (150-page book)
Cat: 546252 Rel: 02 Sep 14

150 page paperback book featuring content taken from various issues of the respected "Full Watts" Rreggae-zine
Notes: A strong passion for reggae music has inspired people like Beth Lesser & Dave Kingston, Lol Bell-Brown, Penny Reel & Nick Kimberly and Ray Hurford to publish reggae-zines such as "Reggae Quarterly", "Boom-Shacka-Lacka", "Pressure Drop" and "Small Axe". Also California based Steve Milne, who was inspired, encouraged and supported by Small Axe's Ray Hurford from London UK as he states at the beginning of this book, started publishing a reggae-zine.

His Excellent, extensive roots oriented "Full Watts" was first published in 1997. Initially it appeared three times a year, with every issue containing articles, interviews, discographies and reviews of albums, singles, book and magazines. In the first half of the new millennium "Full Watts" didn't appear that regularly anymore (there was even a 2 year absence) and then the publishing of the well respected reggae-zine stopped...

And now Steve Milne (in collaboration with Ray Hurford) comes up with the "Full Watts" book, which features content taken from various issues of the reggae-zine. The "Full Watts" reggae-zine was known for it's faultless and beautiful presentation, and thus it's obvious that this also goes for the book. Besides mostly fascinating in-depth interviews with artists such as Mikey Chung, Albert Griffiths (of Gladiators fame), Ronnie Davis (the Itals), Earl Zero, Joseph Hill (the sorely missed lead singer of Culture), Linval Thompson, The Congos, Prince Malachi, Alpheus, Yami Bolo, The Abyssinians, Jah Warrior, Ras Michael, Barrington Levy and Monty Alexander, there are also a few articles included here such as Kung-Fu Reggae, Album reviews and Version Galore, which puts the spotlight on 12 versions of the "Freedom Blues" riddim. All in all a great read!

280 page paperback book
Notes: 'I Ain't Mad at Ya' by Owen Broomfield (aka Hulk) is a document of the social, cultural and political realities of growing up in the 60's/70's, as a black youth on the Aston/Handsworth border.

Owen exposes the issues faced by the black, predominately African-Caribbean, community and the daily racism they faced in school, on the streets and in the workplace. He then takes us through his seminal years of growing up, from the physical fights with white racists to the battle of wills with teachers and sports coaches. But the book really comes into its own when Owen writes about his three constant companions and passions: sport, music and his family.

Owen excelled at a number of sports and could have been a professional basketball player if fate (and a rehearsal) hadn't interfered. Instead he turned to music, which came naturally to him, and for a few fleeting years was part of an extraordinary movement in Birmingham's and indeed the UK reggae scene.

He vividly brings to life some of the musicians, characters and hustlers of Handsworth and the venues where they plied their trade, giving a voice to these lost and hidden bands, encouraging the reader to discover them. As an added bonus, the discographies at the end of each chapter are incredibly deep and will offer even the most knowledgeable reggae lover something to discover.

The book's central theme is of Owen's spiritual journey and of the love he shares for his mom Gladys, a formidable but loving presence through his life, Dad Hartnel, and brother Lewis as well as a dizzying cast of relatives.

'I Ain't Mad at Ya' offers a rare insight into Birmingham's black community and shines a light on the incredible amount of black music culture produced in the vibrant suburb of Handsworth and the role its musicians and entrepreneurs have played in shaping and influencing popular music in the UK.

I Drive A Valence: The Collected Lyrics Of Bill Callahan
Cat: 548939 Rel: 05 Dec 14

A collection of Bill Callahan's lyrics, presented along with 116 illustrations
Notes: Until we have a feature film in which Bill Callahan's words are spoken by the true and deep characters who exist within the songs, the best format will be this lyric book - wait, no, the best format will always be the albums featuring the songs, since they are sung by Bill Callahan, the author and singer, in his own inimitable and completely individual fashion. I Drive a Valence, however, which spans two decades of Smog/Bill Callahan songs, is a fairly unforgettable look-see; in fact, it's a definitive-yet-concise trip through the mirror, collecting the lyrics to 70 songs and pairing them with 116 dreamy ink-wash images by the man himself.

The nuances and ambiguities within plain-spoke expression are at the exquisite center of Callahan's gift, and the plain fact of words on paper nails them down in a concrete fashion that signals eternity somehow more concretely than sounds in the air can conjure.

I Drive a Valence does this for the listener - makes him/her a reader, while putting Bill Callahan's songs on another shelf where they sit just as entirely as they do on LP shelves around the world.

Jackson C Frank: The Clear Hard Light Of Genius
Cat: 554319 Rel: 05 Nov 14

250 page paperback book detailing the life of musician Jackson C. Frank
Notes: The story of Jackson C. Frank is tragic. The victim of a school fire in his youth, struggling with homelessness and mental illness throughout his life, half-blinded in old age before his death in 1999, Frank met continuous obstacles. And yet he enjoyed a shining moment with the release of Jackson C. Frank on Columbia Records in 1965. The album would go on to be seen as one of the greatest folk albums of the decade - maybe of all time - and its opening track "Blues Run the Game" has become a standard covered by hundreds.

Jim Abbott's book is the result of years of research piecing together evidence, relations and apocryphal stories from Frank's life. It is also part memoir, as Abbott cared for Frank through the final decade of his life. Their friendship was fraught with difficulties, which Abbott portrays with the honesty of a journalist. In doing so, he draws a portrait of a uniquely gifted songwriter, blessed with talent and besotted by demons. At 250 pages, Abbott's memoir shows a flawed and caring individual whose struggle was best depicted in his songs.

Following the release of Jackson C. Frank: The Clear, Hard Light of Genius, Ba Da Bing will release three volumes of Jackson C. Frank: The Complete Recordings in early 2015, compiling work from throughout his life, including unreleased material.

Jazz & Cricket: An Unlikely Combination, by Matthew Wright
Cat: 827932 Rel: 11 Jun 21

75-page book including colour and black and white photographs
Notes: Links between cricket and music have been written about at some length, as has the importance of calypso, but little has appeared to document the affinity between cricket and jazz.

This book redresses the balance with reference to those involved in both, through history and anecdotes, and in the social background of their parallel development.

"I like it when nobody, neither the participants nor the audience, knows what's going to happen or how it's going to turn out, which is the link between cricket and jazz." Richard Williams

Read about....

The saxophonist who took a Test match hat-trick

The jazz club that made the West Indian team honorary members

The trombonist tipped as a future England wicket-keeper

The bowler who became a highly regarded bassist in New York

The tenor player who wrote a tune dedicated to spin bowler Jim Laker

The Indian batsman given a signed photo by Ella Fitzgerald .....and much more!

Last Shop Standing
Cat: 386213 Rel: 26 Mar 10
Notes: Whatever happened to the record shops? Not long ago every town had one. Between 2004 and 2008 independent record shops were closing at a rate of one every three days. 'Last Shop Standing' looked if it was going to be an obituary to these great institutions. This new updated version, featuring lots of new anecdotes, looks at 2009: the year the record store fought back. With initiatives like Record Store Day, which attracted the support of artists all over the world, record shops staged the biggest and best comeback since Ali v Foreman.

New shops started sprouting up everywhere and vinyl sales rose by 33%. Graham Jones' 'Last Shop Standing' tells the story of Record Store Day and also lists all shops that have taken part. 'Last Shop Standing' features messages of support for independent record shops from Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Joe Satriani, Damon Albarn and Chuck Berry amongst many others. This book champions the great characters that run record shops and explains to the public the problems they have faced. Graham also explains why he believes the record shops who have survived have a real future and why the public must support them.

The author, Graham Jones has worked at the heart of the record industry since the golden 1980s. He was there during the fruitful retail years and has witnessed the tragic decline of a business blighted by corruption and corporate greed. Jones has collected a wealth of entertaining stories that explain why the best are still standing, and how the worst of them blew it.

Featuring a new Introduction by Spencer Hickman (Rough Trade) and an additional chapter written by Michael Kurtz, the founder of Record Store Day.

Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened To Record Shops? (6th edition)
Cat: 526673 Rel: 23 Apr 14

A fascinating book documenting the decline, and recent come-back of record stores in UK
Notes: The book 'Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops?' is the story of how the UK went from having over 2000 independent record shops in the 1980's to just 269 by 2009. Graham Jones was in the perfect position to witness their sad decline from the vantage point of a record company salesman who has travelled the length and breadth of the UK to sell stock to these shops. As he watched the tragedy unfold he decided it was important that someone documented their tales before the record shop went the way of the stamp shop, the coin shop and the candlestick maker.

He set off on a tour of the UK to interview 50 record shop owners to see why they had survived whilst a couple of thousand others had closed. These interviews are the basis of the book. Graham thought he was writing the obituary of the record store but Last Shop Standing became a celebration of these great cultural meeting places: a David and Goliath tale of stores managing to keep going despite the immense pressure from downloading and supermarkets.

In 2012 Last Shop Standing was made into a successful film featuring Johnny Marr, Norman Cook, Richard Hawley, Paul Weller, Billy Bragg and lots of record shop owners from the book. The film has been screened all over the world and the DVD was the official film of Record Store Day 2013. Recently, record shops have made an astounding comeback and we now have more record shops than back in 2009. This updated sixth edition of Last Shop Standing plains why. This edition also gives a comprehensive update on the original shops interviewed. Last Shop Standing has become a piece of social history. It is also a damn good laugh.

Notes: The Letters to Emma Bowlcut, an epistolary novelette, collects 62 letters from a nameless protagonist to a woman he saw at at a party. The letters form the seduction, in sifting the loose, disparate details of his day-to-day, the desires, the frustrations, the joys. The Letters to Emma Bowlcut captures the sensual and esoteric qualities of letter correspondence.
