Drum machines

Drum machines are essentials for most electronic music producers. House, techno and hip-hop rely on synthesised and sampled kicks, snares, claps and hi-hats to give them their signature sound. Some of the best and most creative drum machines are now at the more affordable end of the market, thanks to brands like Korg, Teenage Engineering and Roland. Whether triggered by MIDI or a built-in sequencer, these cheaper models still work well as part of any hardware studio or live performance setup. Lots of modern drum machines are based on classic vintage models like the Roland TR-808 and TR-909, but in addition to clones of old-school analogue classics you can also find digital and analogue offerings from the likes of Moog, Erica Synths and Vermona. The line between grooveboxes and drum machines is blurred, with Akai MPCs and Roland MCs allowing you to mix drums and sampled instruments all in one box.

Korg Volca Kick Analogue Kick Generator
Cat: 624272 Rel: 14 Nov 16

Analog synthesiser optimized for kick drum & bass sounds
Notes: An analog kick generator that delivers powerful sounds from kick drum to kick bass.

The volca series has consistently brought renewed attention to classic groove machines and historical synthesis. It now has a new focus. This time, it's the most important sound in dance music: the kick.

The volca kick is an analog kick generator that's made for sound design. An analog circuit based on the powerful resonant sound of the original MS-20 filter, it lets you create a wide range of kick sounds only possible through analog circuitry, ranging from solid kick drums to crisp kick basses. The 16-step sequencer, a distinctive feature of the volca, now has a new Touch FX feature that lets you control an effect instantly, giving you even more live performance potential. Experience the stunning power of an analog kick that cannot be obtained from a plug-in or a sample.

Analog kick sounds generated by MS-20 filter oscillation:

The volca kick generates powerfully present kick sounds using a completely analog circuit. To create those sounds, it uses not a typical sine wave, but the sound of an oscillating filter from the original MS-20. The powerful Rev.1 filter of the MS-20 self-oscillates when resonance is increased to the maximum, and this is used to produce powerful kick sounds with complex overtones.

Simple and effective parameters are provided, allowing you to freely design a wide range of kick sounds to your taste. Start the sound design process by using MS-20 RESONATOR (PITCH/BEND/TIME) to control the sense of pitch that generates the "body resonance" of the kick sound. Then use PULSE COLOUR/LEVEL to adjust the clip components to control the sense of attack, and AMP ATTACK/DECAY to intuitively control the decay of the sound. From tight kicks to fat, slow-decaying kicks, and pitched kick bass, it's possible to create kick sounds that are appropriate for every type of dance music.

Aggressively control the sound using DRIVE and TONE:

In addition to the analog kick generator circuit based on the MS-20 filter, there's an analog drive that includes multiple stages of distortion. The distortion level and type can be varied by a single knob, increasing the variety and power of the kick sounds. You can use the tone control to transform the character of the sound by adjusting the high-frequency range.

Powerful kick bass that rules the beat:

The volca kick is not just a kick drum machine. You can use the 16-key touch-panel keyboard to perform dynamic kick bass, and take advantage of the volca kick's powerful analog circuitry to generate the sub bass sound that's indispensable to dance music styles such as grime or trap.

Since the volca kick covers a wide pitch range from low- to mid-frequencies, your sequences can include a variety of sounds including low tom, high tom, and sound effects.

16-step sequencer allows automation of all parameters:

The volca kick features a 16-step sequencer that gives you plenty of improvisatory freedom. You can use it to quickly lay out a kick drum pattern, and it also supports realtime recording, which is an ideal way to perform kick bass phrases. And the pattern chain function lets you connect multiple sequence patterns for successive playback, making it possible to construct large-scale developments of 32, 64, or even 256 steps by joining up to 16 sequences.

The volca kick's motion sequence function records your knob movements, letting you add time-varying change to the sound. This is great way to polish your loops, and also lets you generate highly original live performances. Up to 16 sequence patterns and sounds can be stored in internal memory.

TOUCH FX controls realtime sequence effects with for instant cuts, breaks and fills:

The new Touch FX function further strengthens the performance potential of the volca kick. You can instantly trigger a sequence effect simply by touching a step key, transforming your realtime performance in kaleidoscopic ways.

Sequence effects include the roll function that plays a sound repeatedly, the octave function that raises the pitch by one or two octaves, and the sustain function that immediately maximizes the amp decay. These are great ways to create punchy and powerful breaks.

Playback can be synchronized with another unit:

The volca kick provides a sync connector that can be easily connected to many of KORG's other synths and groove machines. Connect to other volca units, minilogue, electribe or SQ-1, and experience a session with synchronized sequencer playback. The MIDI IN jack lets you use the volca kick as a sound module for DAW and MIDI controller.

Vermona Kick Lancet Analogue Kick Drum Generator
Cat: 420715 Rel: 30 Mar 11

Analogue kick drum generator.
Notes: One of the hardest in the game. Dedicated kick drum synth from analogue experts Vermona. Shape your own sounds from scratch. Killer.

Supplier's notes:
The Kick Lancet generator is a handy analogue percussion synthesizer with priority to kick-drum sounds.

The heart of the Kick Lancet's sound structure is an analogue oscillator that produces sine and square waves, which can blend seamlessly from one to the other. 2 independent envelope generators with a decay/release phase can modulate the oscillator's frequency and the VCA. Additionally the VCO pitch can be modulated by the fast LFO (3Hz to 3 kHz, triangle). Noise and a pulse signal can be added in the mixer section. Vermona have a balls-controller for making it really big.

The Kick Lancet can be triggered by MIDI but beside that there are 3 different trigger inputs. A gate trigger, which impulse can trigger the Kick Lancet in normal way with additional accent or completely dynamical depending on the incoming voltage, a simply short current trigger (i.e. momentary foot switch) and an audio input, which offers the possibility to trigger the Kick Lancet by an audio signal statically or dynamically. Drum pads can also be connected here.

Jomox MBase 11 Analogue Bass Drum Module
Cat: 458818 Rel: 25 Jul 12

Full MIDI controlled analog bass drum module
Notes: The MBase11 can do only one thing, but it does it right, and it does this even better than in the past.

The MBase11 is the logical follower of the MBase01 and offers even better performance, more versatility and an even phatter sound. It generates analog bass drums, from extremely powerful to soft and covers the whole range from 909-style to 808-fashioned. And also, the LFO has 8 different waveforms including true sine that can be used to create very different envelopes. The resulting sounds are not simply kicks, this turns out to be a bass drum synthesizer.

The MBase11 has a compression parameter to vary the thickness of decaying sound. It offers a variable gate time to to create very different sounding attacks. It also has a metalise parameter to have hundreds of variations on the attack noise.

For more intuitive editing, JoMox have added an analog potentiometer that works alternatively to the parameter editing when scrolling the data wheel is too hard.

The MBase11 purposefully sounds a bit different to the XBASE 999/888, making it a great sounding expansion for our other drum products and other analog percussion.

The kick sets in very precisely and the attack sounds very snappy at all kinds of sound variations.

The MBase11 can also be used as a real bass with some limitations. If decay is cranked up it is long enough for tones and the pitch can be played on the keyboard in semitones over three octaves.

The kick drum can be triggered by an external analog trigger input. This is especially useful for live drummers who want to thicken up their live drum kit. The trigger input works with regular piezo pickups or audio signals.

Last but not least: one of the most convincing arguments for the MBase11 is the price: This is an inexpensive tool that helps you to create great kick sounds, without the time-consuming searching associated with mostly not satisfying samples. You save time and energy while reaching the sound quality you always imagined.

Tweak the sound you need. Everything is real.

Vermona DRM1 MKIV Analogue Drum Synthesiser
Cat: 812233 Rel: 26 Apr 21

Analogue drum synthesiser
Notes: Latest update to a modern classic drum machine. Pure analogue sound and rock solid build. Externally untouched but now with revamped internal circuits and USB MIDI. Also available with new, improved trigger inputs.

Supplier's Notes:
Introducing the brand new update to the classic drum and percussion synthesizer VERMONA DRM1. The DRM1 is a key part in Vermona's history. Its first generation, released in the 90s as Syncussion DRM1, caught wide attention. The MKII-version then continued and broadened the success and breathed new life into the VERMONA brand at the turn of the millennium. With the DRM1 MKIII, that Vermona have been building since 2006, it has now been a total of 25 years of DRM1! This makes it one of the longest-lived electronic musical instruments. And launching the next quarter-century is this analog drum synthesizer from VERMONA.

DRM1 MKIV: Familiar, yet evolved

At first glance, you may not notice any difference from its predecessor. Indeed, from the outside, there isn't any! The overall concept and user interface have remained the same: There are eight instrument channels, each with nine knobs for sound shaping, pan and volume control. The DRM1 is a musical instrument, a creative tool that wants to be touched and played.

Instead of trying to reinvent or change an already well-proven external design, with this update to version MKIV Vermon decided to focus on the inside. Time was taken to thoroughly listen into the circuits and put energy and care into its details: Thoughtfully tweaking frequency ranges, revamping control curves, adjusting levels and redesigning sub-circuits. The goal was to make the DRM1 MKIV the best drum synthesizer Vermona have ever built!

DRM1 MKIV: Sociable and dynamic

To make integration into your studio more comfortable, the DRM1 MKIV was equipped with USB-MIDI in addition to the standard MIDI connections.

The optional trigger inputs have been significantly upgraded. Beyond gate pulses, they now also accept different voltage levels for triggering the instrument channels dynamically. The DRM1 MKIV with trigger inputs can also convert the analog signals into MIDI notes via USB or the newly added MIDI OUT connector making it an incredibly versatile MIDI interface.

Whether you're controlling the DRM1 MKIV via a DAW, a hardware sequencer, or a modular system, you'll have the proper connection and further the ability to send the MIDI notes to additional devices.

DRM1 MKIV: More power under the hood

The power supply of the DRM1 MKIV is completely new. It now works anywhere in the world, without having to manually change the mains voltage. This is a huge relief for all of you who use the instrument at live shows. No less important: it works more energy-efficient than the old one!

Twisted Electrons BlastBeats Groovebox
Twisted Electrons BlastBeats Groovebox (drum machine/synthesiser)
Cat: 858514 Rel: 01 Jun 22

Drum machine/synthesiser with a vintage FM chip
Notes: A uniquely characterful drum machine, based on FM synthesis inspired by early 90s PC soundcards. Six drum voices and four synth parts can be controlled by a built-in step sequencer or MIDI.

Supplier's Notes:
At the heart of BlastBeats is a vintage FM chip called YMF-262 also known as the OPL3 chip & previously found in computer sound cards of the early 90s.

These chips were notoriously hard to program and were rarely used to their full potential. However, they can produce surprisingly rich beautiful and utterly dirty sounds with a bit of exploring...

By putting so many parameters within easy reach BlastBeasts makes it fun and easy to master the signature sound of the DOS era!

Rhythm & Synth

BlastBeats is a 10 voice groove box offering 6 drum voices and 4 synth instruments.

The many faders offer full control over the parameters of the instruments and can be automated and modulated per step

Beats and melodies are a pleasure to program thanks to the high quality illuminated buttons

Landscape Noon 8-Channel Analogue Drum Synthesiser (blue)
Landscape Noon 8-Channel Analogue Drum Synthesiser (blue) (8-channel analogue drum synthesiser)
Cat: 860834 Rel: 21 Oct 22

8-channel analogue drum synthesiser
Notes: NOON is a passive analogue drum/synthesizer. Each of the eight channels uses a unique analogue circuit with its own characteristics. No power supply is needed. Each circuit is triggered and powered individually from incoming gates or control voltages provided by voltage sequencers or modular systems. By using this unique method, we can increase instability and magnify organic aspects of traditional analogue electronic instruments. The sound of analogue, at its core, is the sound of sculpted electricity. By removing the stabilizing elements of a constant power source, we can listen to the sound of electronic circuits loading and unloading, powering up and powering down, and we can increase the natural chaotic movement of electricity. The loading of circuits creates natural ways to access swing and groove or ways to deconstruct a programmed rhythm sequence to make surprisingly new ideas.
Each channel is represented by a tuning fork. Incoming voltage can be thought of as a way to "strike" each fork with momentary voltage. Between every channel there are Link buttons which allow voltage sharing between channels. Linking them provides a wide mix of results depending on incoming voltage, active or inactive channels, slider settings, gate lengths and multichannel linking. The results can be described as cross modulation, growth (creating a larger and more complex circuit), or processing (filtering, distortion). Due to the cycles of voltage and this inherent instability, a definition of what is actually occurring between channels can be hard to pin down. The eight Mod buttons, which are located at the bottom of each tuning fork, change the behaviour and sound of each circuit. The eight latching CV buttons along the top allow the "?" Even and "?" Odd CV modulation inputs to route to even and odd channels. When incoming CV is unmuted, a channel's behaviour can change drastically and this behaviour can change further when channels are linked. These CV inputs are a way to add microtonal pitch changes and/or large textural movement to voices. The Even and Odd CV inputs are summed to their respective channels to provide a rhythmic modulation reference between multiple channels.

Limitations & Recommendations

A voltage sequencer, modular system or some form of external control voltage is required for use. This is a powerless instrument which relies upon receiving voltage and control from external sources.
Using sequencers which have the ability to vary gate length is highly encouraged due to the increase in sound possibilities and rhythmic movement.
Each model of voltage sequencer can have slightly different effects on the tonality of the instrument due to variations between manufacturers and feature sets.
Given the passive design of the device the reaction of the touch plates will vary greatly based upon what voltages are being received in which channel, if channels in are being touched in tandem, skin moisture and gate lengths. Using only trig signals can significantly lessen the touch plate response.
Channels 7 & 8 (Larynx & Bacid) will give best results being fed gate and cv voltage simultaneously. Sending trigs instead of gates to these channels may have less interesting results than found in other channels.

SoMa Laboratory Pulsar-23 Utilities Turret For Pulsar-23 Drum Machine (pin version)
Cat: 951305 Rel: 14 Nov 23

A set of simple auxiliary modules to expand the functionality of the Pulsar-23 drum machine.
Notes: *** This version of UTILITIES comes with PULSAR-23 style turrets designed for connecting alligator clips. ***

UTILITIES contains a set of simple auxiliary modules to expand the functionality of the PULSAR-23 drum machine. UTILITIES modules can also be used with any gear that works with CV signals (Eurorack, semi-modular synthesizers, etc.).

The modules included in UTILITIES can be divided into two groups:
1) Passive elements such as switches, resistors, capacitors.
2) Various types of amplifiers and waveshapers, linear, non-linear, controlled and uncontrolled.
Passive elements are designed to expand the possibilities of switching and controlling the PULSAR.

Linear amplifiers are needed when you need to feed a signal from a device operating in a lower voltage format to the PULSAR inputs. For example, it can be a step sequencer with an output voltage of 5 volts, while the PULSAR needs 10 volts to fully trigger the drum modules. Or it could be the output of a cassette tape recorder, which has an output of 1 volt, while for normal operation the PULSAR needs an input level of an audio signal of 5 volts. Non-linear and controlled amplifiers and waveshapers are designed to control the signal level, while simultaneously changing its spectrum, distorting its shape and adding harmonics. The circuitry of these amplifiers is very simple and based on the early developments of the transistor era, with its inherent beauty and grace.

UTILITIES connectors are made in the PULSAR-23 format on pins designed to connect the alligator clips. There are also adapters for 3.5mm Eurorack mini-jacks.

The top panel and enclosure of UTILITIES are made of PCBs, which significantly reduced the cost of the device.

Michigan Synth Works SY-1 Analogue Drum Synthesiser With MIDI Equipped I/O Configuration
Cat: 919935 Rel: 04 Apr 23

A full size, exact replica of the Pearl SY-1 Syncussion.
Notes: The Michigan Synth Works SY-1 Drum synth is a full size, exact replica of the Pearl SY-1 Syncussion. Every detail has been replicated from the original board layouts to the mechanical construction. The assembled version has been modernized to use current manufacturing processes while still using the original board layouts and all parts have been carefully chosen to match the behaviour of the original. Case, boards, and I/O Boards are all interchangeable with the original Pearl device

The Syncussion:

The Syncussion is a 2 voice drum synthesizer with two oscillators per voice and six different modes. Five modes mix and modulate the oscillators plus a noise channel. Each voice has controls for TUNE, DECAY, SWEEP amount, SWEEP Speed, Sweep up/off/down, LFO amount, and LFO speed, LFO Shape (Tri or Square), and sample and hold

OSC Modes:

A: One oscillator sound, at this position the regular drum synthesizer sweep can be effected.

B. Sound of one oscillator adjusting the other osciIIator frequency; produces a metallic sound.

C. Sound of a mix of two oscillator outputs; sound is similar to that of a vibraphone.

D. Sound of mix of two oscillator outputs; produces a low to high sweep and is done by hitting pad softly or hard; there is no connection to SWEEP SPEED and SWEEP RANGE

E. Sound of one oscillator adjusting the other oscillator frequency with a mix of noise; produces a sound similar to hitting thin metal.

F. Sound of only noise

Triggering:

The SY-1 is designed to be triggered via drum triggers which output a very low pulse signal. Modern 5V trigger signals (v-trig) can be used, how it i recommended experimenting with simple audio samples or more dynamic triggers. One of the more interesting features of the Syncussion is the dynamic response to the drum triggers and just sending a straight pulse which maxes out the trigger inputs does not do the device justice.

Tuning:

The original SY-1 uses a tune pedal to adjust the pitch of both oscillators while playing. This functionality has been retained in the original configuration but is of limited use without the pedal. The expanded version DOES have per voice CV control (1v/Oct) as well as the MIDI.

MIDI equipped I/O Configuration: This is the same as the expanded i/o configuration but adds MIDI in place of the MOD input. The MIDI responds to velocity to gate level and pitch for each channel. 2 TRS-TS and TRS MIDI cables are included

Trig 1,2 In - MIDI In - Mute - Tune 1,2 CV in - Output 1, 2

The SY-1 ships with a metal base panel but the DIY wood case can be used instead. It is provided UNFINISHED and sold separately.

What's included:
SY-1 Synthesizer
Universal Power adapter (100-240V, 12V DC out, Tip Positive)
MIDI I/O: 2x 1.5m TRS 1/4" Phone to 2x TS 1/4" Phone, 1x 1.5M 3.5mm TRS to MIDI, 1x TRS 3.5mm to 1/4" TRS Adapter

Jomox Alpha Base MKII Analogue Drum Synthesiser
Cat: 1027523 Rel: 31 Oct 24

Analogue drum synthesiser
Notes: The ALPHA BASE Mk II is the successor of the already legendary ALPHA BASE.

What's new?

-Graphic OLED display
-Real RGB LEDs in the sequencer
-More buttons: Last Step, Roll/Flam, Store Kit/Patt, Rec Para and Rec Sample
-Analogue panning circuitry for the hybrid sample channels
-Improved analogue engine
-Noise volume is controllable in the hybrid sample channels
-More samples
-Headphone volume is independent from mix volume

It's true analogue. Eleven instruments, sequencer, Midi/USB/SD-Card. Samples. Sampling inputs, balanced individual outputs.

Although it may appear similar to the classics XBASE 09, 999 and 888, the ALPHA BASE has an entirely new design under the hood. Jomox have put in the concentrated know-how of their drum machines and synths of the past 20 years. Some things have been simplified, but also added new components or have combined them new. The outcome is the best sounding and most versatile drum machine that Jomox has ever built.

Kick Drum

The centre instrument still is the analogue kick drum which has gotten a facelifting again. The legendary punch and assertiveness of all Jomox kicks is convincingly continued. LFO, pitch envelope, metallic noise and gate time are famous features that may not and do not miss out.

MBrane
As a second analogue instrument, Jomox have put in a complete MBrane voice. It covers a gigantic spectrum of analogue snare drums, percussions, cow bells, claves, glasses, toms, bass drums etc. etc. It uses the technology of the Mod.Brane11. Of course, this instrument has 2 own LFOS, pitch envelopes and metallic noise as well.

Samples+Filter

The succeeding six instruments are built hybridly and consist of samples that are run through real analogue filters and VCAs. Each analogue sample channel has an own metallic noise that alternatively can be used as a signal source or being mixed to the sample.

With metallic noise only, it becomes a pure analogue instrument again. Four channels make use of a multimode filter that is capable of resonance - again they can be used as true analogue instruments with the self-oscillating filter as the only sound source if you wish.

Hi Hat

Two of these six channels are reserved for hi hats and make use of a proven and improved HH filter that was used in the XBASE 999 already. It is specialized for analogue hi hats and may conjure wonderful noisy hi hats from a sample mixed with metallic noise.

Clap, Rim, Crash, Ride

The succeeding four channels have each a resonateable 2-pole multimode filter that can be switched between LP, HP and BP. The filter cutoff can be modulated by an ADSR envelope and an LFO per instrument. If the filter is self-oscillating, one can create wonderful analogue toms, claves, sticks etc. by means of the VCA envelope behind. Or even extremely bend samples sonically. By principle, each of the four MM filter sample channels is a little synth voice of its own. A sampled synth bass run through the analogue filter is nearly indistinguishable from a real analogue synth.

X Sample 1+2

Moreover, there are two sample instruments that work purely digital. It's even possible that the Alpha Base can sample external audio on these channels for about max. 5 seconds. Which is more than enough for drum samples. The recorded sample can be stored on SD card or being copied to the internal flash memory and then being played back by the other sample channels. Samples can also be copied from SD card into flash memory. The format is RAW/WAV mono 16 Bit / 48kHz. The internal organization divides samples into fixed memory slots that can be addressed by the parameter sample select in the instruments. All samples can be pitched and modulated in a wide range. The sample start and stop can be edited and they are loopable as well. Modulation targets are: pitch, filter cutoff and volume. Each channel has an own LFO for that.

FM Synth

As a little digital gadget, a mini FM synth has been added. With 4 operators and maximum 6 voices it can create weird and crazy percussion sounds up to simple chords. Played over an external midi keyboard, it can be used as a polyphonic synth.

Effects

Two digital effects are on board: delay and reverb that act as send/return effects. Each of the analogue instrument outputs has an own A/D converter. The delay effect can also be inserted into the six hybrid sample channels and becomes then part of the sound production chain. The reverb can easily be killed by an encoder click but is indeed a great advantage for life performances with minimal equipment. Reverb times may reach to almost infinity, and the damping filters act quite extremely so that the reverb meets the requirement of modern electronic music and can be an essential part of sound.

Editing

For the editing of parameters there are 16 encoders arranged in a 4x4 matrix. Each instrument only addresses two pages by 16 values to make the editing as easy as possible, without deep menu cursors.

11 Instruments: Kick Drum, MBrane, Cl HiHat, Op HiHat, Clap, Rim Shot, Crash, Ride, X Sample 1, X Sample 2, FM Synth.
Real analogue Jomox kick drum.
Real analogue Jomox MBrane voice with 2 coupleable F-OSC for complex analogue snare, percussion, bass and tom sounds ranging from 16Hz to 20kHz.
2 sample based instruments with analogue VCA ADSR envelope and/or HH filter, optionally with metallic noise mixed as extra sound source. The HH filter is 2-pole, HP/LP/Res each separated parameters, peakable but not oscillating.
4 sample based instruments with analogue VCA ADSR envelope and/or resonating multimode filter (LP, HP, BP) with ADSR envelope, optionally with metallic noise mixed as extra sound source. The multimode filter can be used as a signal generator in order to generate analogue toms or sticks etc.
2 sample based instruments with external sampling input and pure digital playback.
1 FM synth with 4 operators and max. 6 voices for percussive sounds.
Effects delay, reverb with send per instrument, also insertable into analogue signal path on CH, OH, Clp, Rim, Ride.

Wee Noise Makers PGB-1 Portable GrooveBox (black aluminium case)
Cat: 1025150

Portable synthesiser & sequencer
Notes: Wee Noise Makers PGB-1 is an advanced yet portable synthesizer and sequencer that allows you to craft complex musical pieces anywhere. This all-in-one, open-source, customizable device is designed to empower aspiring musicians, seasoned creators, and makers. It isn't just an instrument-it's your gateway to the world of music production and audio synths.

PGB-1 has open-source stock firmware that makes it a playful and powerful groove box. It allows you to craft complex musical pieces with drums, bass, lead, samples, reverb, bitcrusher, overdrive, and others.

Orchestrated by an advanced sequencer with conditional steps, repeats/ratcheting, pattern chaining, chord sequencing, song mode, live sequencing effects, and more.

PGB-1 is Wee Noise Makers' response to the current landscape of entry-level hardware synthesizers and groove boxes. In recent years, we saw a plethora of new electronic instruments marketed as accessible, affordable, and designed for beginners. Yet, often these instruments can feel limited, tying users to a specific sound or ecosystem. These limits sometimes feel artificial, pushing you to combine multiple products of the same line to actually make meaningful music. At the same time leading to frustrating sequencing, connection, and mixing issues that defeat the portability and playfulness of the instruments.

With the PGB-1, Wee Noise Makers wanted to address all these shortcomings, bringing you an instrument that is:

All-in-one: you only need one device to craft complete music pieces
Powerful: Drums, bass, lead, samples, etc. with advanced sequencing features
Truly pocket-size: 10 x 6.6 x 1.5 cm, smaller footprint than a smartphone
Hackable: Designed for customization, open-source firmware, and compatible with several programming languages (including Python)
Creativity should not be limited by the tools you have, but empowered by them. With the PGB-1, Wee Noise Makers are dedicated to creating a platform that encourages innovation and experimentation. Whether you are a musician looking to explore new sounds, a developer eager to create unique software, or a hobbyist who enjoys tweaking and building.

PGB-1 is designed to be customized and modified to your taste. The front panel is a bare PCB, designed with the open-source software Kicad. The production file will be available so that anyone can make its own version with custom graphics and get it manufactured for a few bucks.

PGB-1 is also hackable with CircuitPython, C\C++, and Ada support for programming your own synthesizers, video games, or any audio-based projects.

By making the PGB-1 open source, a sandbox is provided for the audio community. Users can delve into the code, modify existing features, or add entirely new functionalities. This flexibility not only enhances the capabilities of the PGB-1 but also fosters a collaborative environment where users can share their creations and learn from each other.

Additionally, Wee Noise Makers have set up a dedicated Discord server for all PGB-1 users and enthusiasts to discuss, share, and contribute to the growing ecosystem.

Open-source software is not as common in the audio industry, but with this project, the aim is to follow the path of great manufacturers such as Mutable Instruments or Winterbloom.

Landscape Noon 8-Channel Analogue Drum Synthesiser (green)
Cat: 1012570 Rel: 24 Jun 24

8-channel analogue drum synthesiser
Notes: Triggered by incoming voltages, each passive channel of the Noon can be 'struck' in order to generate percussive or melodic tones. A drum machine unlike anything else around.

Supplier's Notes:
NOON is a passive analogue drum/synthesizer.

The eight latching CV buttons along the top allow the "crescent" Even and "moon" Odd CV modulation inputs to route to even and odd channels.

Which Sequencers/Control Voltage Sources Work

Each model of voltage sequencer will have different effects on the tonality of the instrument due to differences in power and feature sets between manufacturers. NOTE: The strongest recommendations for Noon are currently the Arturia Beatstep Pro and Eurorack modular systems. This is due to the strength of power provided and quick access to gate/control voltage variations. Noon has shown great results with these sequencers (and voltage source examples) thus far:

-Sequentix Cirklon / Arturia Beatstep Pro & Keystep Pro / Ableton Push 3 / ALM Busy Circuits Pamala's Workout / Make Noise 0-ctrl / Westlicht Per Former / Motu Ultralight as CV interface / Qu-Bit Contour / Schlappi Engineering Angle Grinder / Music Thing Turing Machine + Pulses mkii / Polyend Poly 2 / Sixty Four Pixels CV.OCD / Social Entropy Engine / Making Sound Machines Stolperbeats / Soma Ornament-8 / Soma Pulsar-23 / Acid Rain Technology Constellation / Five12 Vector Sequencer / Mannequins Just Friends / Mutable Instruments Marbles & Stages / Expert Sleepers ES-9 & FH-2 / OXI One / monome teletype + meadowphysics / Meng Qi Voltage Memory / vpme.de Euclidean Circles v2 / ET Levit8 / MPC One / WMD Metron / Tiptop Audio Trigger Riot / Shakmat Four Bricks Rook / Frap Tools Falistri / Lorre Mill Double Knot / various audio rate oscillators

Which Sequencers/Control Voltage Sources Don't.

Given the very close relationship between Noon and what's driving it you could experience non-flattering results in some cases. Mostly, USB powered sequencers (other than the BSP) provide less power. Please Note: two of these were listed in the working category previously but after some circuit changes and further testing, it is recommended that you don't use these without using an external MIDI to CV converter for additional power. Note II: you can still get some good sound out of them!

-Korg SQ-64 (low power, **However, using a Volca power supply and updating to the newest firmware is a big help)

-Synthstrom Deluge (low power, can activate some voices but not all)

-Torso T-1 (low power, can activate some voices but not all)

Audio

The sound examples below were sequenced/powered using the Arturia Beatstep Pro, unless otherwise noted. Some examples use 12v, 10v and 5v gates.

No swing is used in the examples and all pattern examples are quantized.

No compression, limiting or effects are applied. Please use caution when listening at louder volumes.

Recommendations & Limitations

A voltage sequencer, modular system or some form of external control voltage is required for use. This is a powerless instrument which relies upon receiving voltage and control from external sources.

Using sequencers which have the ability to vary gate length is highly encouraged due to the increase in sound possibilities and rhythmic movement.

Given the passive design of the device the reaction of the touch plates will vary greatly based upon what voltages are being received in which channel, how many channels are being touched, skin moisture and gate lengths. Using only trig signals can significantly lessen touch plate response.

Noon's volume controls and mixing are done passively which can create situations for non-linear behaviour, interaction between channels, audio bleed and at times affect overall chaos during droning patches. To fully mute a channel the mute buttons should be utilized because the individual sliders will still allow some audio through at the lowest setting. Noon's two dedicated CV inputs are also passively summed to the even and odd channels. This can create cross talk, audio bleed and interaction between even and odd channels when utilized- however these additional interactions can be viewed as a feature rather than a limitation.

Sequencers with USB power should be used with a USB wall adaptor because powering via a computer can create background noise in Noon. Sometimes that extra noise sounds nice and sometimes a bit annoying.
Channels 7 & 8 (Larynx & Bacid) will give best results being fed gate and cv voltage simultaneously. Sending trigs instead of gates to these channels may have less interesting results than found in other channels.
