The Artistic Truth
The Artistic Truth (marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: AKOB 028. Rel: 24 Nov 21
Sound Lord (5:35)
Eden's Rise (7:02)
The Artistic Truth (5:41)
Speed Jazz (7:55)
Review: Curing what ails you, Dokta Venom slaps down a full prescription pad at AKO HQ with four marvellous medicines. Following the heavyweight 'Dreadnox' on 'AKOizm Vol 4' last year, each of these tracks reveals a different side to this brutalist quack; 'Sound Lord' is pure 3am slammage, all bulldozer breaks and such, 'Eden's Rise' is a breezy pad-heavy goosebump bonanza while the title track 'The Artistic Truth' flips things with much more of a jazzy, abstract twist. Finally 'Speed Jazz' finishes the dosage on a mellow cosmic soul touch. Get well soon.

Sub Plates Six! (12" picture disc)
Cat: SUBBASE 95. Rel: 17 Oct 22
Badman & DBH - "Wanted Dead Or Alive" (4:49)
Cool Hand Flex - "Dubplate" (4:59)
Marvellous Cain - "Sweet Thing" (4:49)
Dead Dred - "Black Pepper" (5:56)
Review: Drum n' bass picture discs are a rare treat, and a sensitive medium at that. Laying our grubby hands on one of these could be like touching a fortress made of feathers, but it's all worth it for the music contained therein. Suburban Base welcome four pushers both old and new to their latest V/A EP here, opting for dry, jump-up drum n' bass emphasising clean subs, filtered guitar lines and summer-of-soul vocal licks.

Wize & Deadly - "Feel Good" (6:29)
Pastaman - "Take Your Time" (4:56)
Review: Spanish stable Satta Sounds get busy on their Tuff Cut TCR series once again, inviting a rabble of roustabouts to the table: Conscious Species, Dr Um, Wize & Deadly and Pastaman all lay down their uncompromised designs and it's another freestyle breakbeat frenzy. Highlights run rife from the opening flutters and skips of Conscious Species' 'Warming Up' to the walloping swing and funk of Pastaman's finale 'Take Your Time'. Don't take that title literally, either! This 12" is limited and likely to fly as fast as the breaks themselves.

Delancy Street (6:58)
Easy Tiger (7:08)
Review: From Houston to Toronto; Dacamera makes his debut on the Toronto label with these two dreamy jungle excursions. 'Delancy Street' sits somewhere between film noir and post war Paris, the mournful trumpets yearning and wheezing through a Gauloise-thick atmosphere. 'Easy Tiger' takes on even more of a jazz mindset with its woozy sax and lavish brushed drum swings. Dreamy tackle. Perfect for the long dark nights ahead.

B2 (5:21)
B3 (6:27)
B4 (6:06)
Review: Dylan Brownsword strips things right down to the elements for this exceptional exploration into dub techno influenced drum & bass. Stark futurism that smoulders at its coldest and will have you shivering at its hottest, vibes range from the shimmering Basic Channel style reflections of 'B1' to the more autonomically minded swagger of 'B3'. Trembling with echoes of his powerful techno work in the past, across this whole collection DB1 keeps one foot in the dance, one foot in the stars throughout.

Cat: EXIT 073. Rel: 05 Mar 24
Teenage Echo (6:03)
My Resolve (4:37)
Meridian (3:51)
I'm Damned (5:00)
Review: Vemodalen means 'The fear that everything has already been done.' If that's not an enticing enough invitation to dBridge's album then we don't know what is. The music as relatable, too. Powerful, slow, sexy and vulnerable, it paints from a synthetic palette anyone over 30 has grown up with and will know intuitively from music and movies. Ranging from poppy motifs that are reminiscent perhaps of Roxy Music or Visage to more introverted electronica that nods at the Rephlex sound and perhaps Si Begg, all backed up by his history as Heartdrive and the Autonomic sound, this is dBridge looking back to look forward. Stunning.

Recover From Solvation (4:47)
Skybound (5:57)
Theta Phase (6:01)
Leave Us Lucid (5:49)
Review: Russian jungle pioneer Dissident makes his debut on Vivid with four intergalactic tear-ups of the highest order. 'Recover From Solvation' brings the classic Krome & Time vibes - deep space breaks, booming subs and trippy textures. 'Skybound' brings that bounce and those warm feels while 'Theta Phase' takes us deep, deep deep into hyperspace by way of a far away daydream. Last but not least 'Leave Us Lucid' closes on a J Majik style stepper spring. What an EP. If this is the sound of Dissident not quite waking up yet, he needs to stay in bed more often.

Rising (7:02)
Fulmination (5:32)

Power Of The Free (4:35)
Review: DJ Bone has made time to put together his first EP in four years for London institution fabric. The Black Market EP is an exciting project which illustrates the newly created fabric Originals label. Opening up with the powerful high tech soul epic 'Rising' which will have you reaching for the lasers, A2 cut 'Fulmination' is full impact techno with a hypnotic melody that's sure to move the mind and body. Over on the flip, there's the welcome addition of liquid drum n' bass cut 'Power Of The Free' which is not something we've heard from the Motor City veteran until now, but fitting considering his back-to-back sets with legend Goldie in recent times.

DJ Flash - "Vagabond" (7:02)
Chippie - "Big Grey Wolf (VIP)" (6:08)
Review: Following last year's epic Missen/MSDos double header late last year, Violet Night Recordings gear up for their first release of 2023 and it's the bossmen taking control on this one. DJ Flash takes the lead with a strong atmospheric jungle twist where bone-crushing amens burst in and up the energy at all the right moments. Chippie takes the B with a special VIP of his 2021 cut 'Big Grey Wolf'. Now with a fresh set of beats and an added sense of urgency, it's enough to have you howling all night long.

Cat: BBKII 001. Rel: 05 Aug 22
DJ Fresh - "Dancing In The Dark" (feat Buunshin) (3:16)
Heavyweight (AMC remix) (4:37)
Review: DJ Fresh is a legend at this point. Whenever he drops new heat it is worth tuning in, especially when it's a 12" picture disc like this from Breakbeat Koas. The A-side is a collab with Buunshin. 'Dancing In the Dark' is a hardcore gem with pitched-up vocals and monstrous breaks over spin backs, raw bass and thrilling synth lacerations. Then comes an AMC Remix of DJ Fresh's 'Heavyweight' that is just that. It rides on silky breakbeats with a rising sense of tension that keeps you locked until the explosive bass and jump-up drum head to the level.

Gold Dust (Record Store Day RSD 2022)
Cat: BBK 2022. Rel: 20 Jul 22
Gold Dust (VIP vocal mix) (5:17)
Gold Dust (instrumental) (7:48)
Review: It's the anthem that just won't quit. Having celebrated a decade of Gold Dust with a whole stack of remixes earlier this year - even though the tune is actually closer to 12 or 13 years old - the Bad Company founder-turned-popstar DJ Fresh now serves up this special gold vinyl edition for Record Store Day. Complete with the VIP and instrumental (which are still arguably the best versions out there) it's yet another way you can get blasted with one of the most iconic and euphoric hooks in modern drum & bass. You can't get enough of this style.

Ruffkut (5:41)
Dope On Plastic (5:29)
Review: Vinyl Fanatiks are coming on strong with their reissues once again as they hit us hard with the latest re-boost of Phantasy's Liquid Wax imprint. A label with a fantastic legacy and a consistency that's largely down to the fact all releases came out of Jack Smooth's Sound Entity jungle techno laboratory, this particular flashback is especially of note as it's one of the earliest productions from Alex Reece (who had just begun working at the studio as an in-house engineer at the time). Both raw and powerful pieces that capture that hardcore transition perfectly, 'Ruffkut' on the jungle side, 'Dope On Plastic' on the techno side. Heavyweight history.

DJ KOS - "Untitled Future" (6:29)
Karma Krew - "Cracking Up" (5:22)
Dubious - "Heartbreak" (5:54)
Review: In the words of Lisa Stansfield, some of us live for the future and some of us wonder. Others, meanwhile, just love to bash out the rave bangers. Others like DJ Kos and his pals Billy Daniel Bunter, Sanxion, Karma Krew and Dubious. All of them delivering premium euphoric goods on this limited coloured vinyl. Following Bunter and Sanxion's hair-raising remix and Kos's timeless original come two more weapons. The mysterious Karma Krew go for the feels with sweeping pads and skippy beats on 'Cracking Up' while Dubious's 'Heartbreak' takes another classic vocal sample and hurls it several decades into the future. The Other World (6:29)
Preserve The Rave (5:59)
The Man Of The Street (feat Mike Tansella Jr) (5:17)
Hasta La Vista, Baby (5:08)
Review: DJ Plant Texture aka Bari's Donato Basile makes a Return to Disorder with four blistering cuts of jungle, electro, techno and acid. He is a versatile producer who takes no prisoners and considers no sounds off-limits. This one kicks off with the brutalist beats and casuistic synths of 'The Other World' before funky, acid-laced techno bouncer 'Preserve The Rave' takes you to the next level. 'The Man Of The Street' (feat Mike Tansella Jr) is then a deeper, more cosmic cut with thinking synths but still plenty of powerful rhythms and last of all are the dark jungle breaks of 'Hasta La Vista, Baby.' These are highly charged and guaranteed dance floor destroyers from this ever-on-point wizard.

Ciao Ragazze Jungle Style (6:28)
Review: DJ Plant Texture is Donato Basile, a diverse producer from Bari. He returns to Munich-based Ilian Tape to follow up 2017's The Bongoman Archive with four slamming cuts on his latest EP. Whether it's pummelling, bass-driven ruckus of 'MPC Jam 1' (Breaks mix) or the off-kilter slam of MPC Jam 2' (Saturator mix) on the A side, to the proper, peak time heads-down stomp of 'MPC Jam 3' (Exp Forever mix). Finally, the early '90s zeitgeist of 'Ciao Ragazze Jungle Style' goes out all guns blazing. On the MPC Thangs EP, this talented Italian producer is at his most fearsome yet.

Review: A slick update to the modern jungle psyche comes in the form of DJ Sofa's latest EP 'Danger Management'. With former releases on iconic labels including Future Retro London, Myor, AKO Beatz, N4, Straight Up Breakbeat, and Ruff 'N Tuff, we're more than astonished at this Finnish rising star's quick but effective bubbling-up to scene-stardom. Snappy, crisp breaks come mashed up with detail-attentive transitions and FX, with the 'Transmission' and 'Monkey Business' making for particularly infectious bits.

Review: Timeless hardcore breakbeat action as label newcomer DJ Stephano makes his debut on Luna C's seminal Kniteforce imprint. 'Heaven' sets the scene with all big flavours from the time; euphoric pianos, wild time-stretched drums and a feel good energy. Deeper into the EP we rave as 'Stella' takes us into deep space with its prowling arpeggio and alien-landing pads. Flip for more piano positivity and hardcore style pitched up vocals while 'Out There' brings the EP to a contemplative close. Classic Kniteforce tackle.

Review: DJ Trax takes perfect stock his sonic journey so far across this superb new album, Break From Reality. It features everything we have come to know and love from the man - rolling breaks, jazzy licks, hip-hop stylings and cinematic synths - but all served up in new and highly compelling ways. Dons of the game like Goldie and Loy have already been digging it and we are too, from the mad and unrelenting drum flurry of the opener to soul drenched breaks like 'Flame' and the acid jazz/4Hero era throwback sounds of 'Long Rhode Home' and its lush broken beats. A richly rewarding drum & bass album from one of the best in the game right now.

Review: The dream team Dogger & Mindstate return to TNQ wax with this hearty package of soulful, hip-hop-influenced D&B flavours that was originally unleashed digitally last summer. Representing both their pathways into this music, from north to south, the duo recruit the likes of London's Verbz and Manchester's Sleazy F Baby to vocal and narrate their delicate, subtle but ultimately heavyweight rhythms. From the deep jazz of 'Different Roads' to the symphonic dynamics of 'From The Concrete', this is one of the hardest hitting and emotional records Dogger and Mindstate have made so far.

Being
Review: Following his latest album Against A Dark Background, the inimitable Dom & Roland continues to forge his own unique near-30 year path with the launch of a brand new label. Fittingly entitled Individual, it kicks off with two exceptional - not to mention uncompromising - cuts. 'Burn Bright' is your quintessential hardcore jungle d&b with big stabs, massive splashing cymbals and iced out atmospheres stretches over the top. 'Being' meanwhile is a hyper jazz jam with brutalist steppy drums, treacle subs and wild blasts of muted trumpet. Far out.

Tao
Review: Italian producer Donato Dozy rightly has a cult following as he has a fantastically well sculpted style whether making ambient deep techno or as is the case here, drum & bass. He opens up with the pulsing loops of 'Mai', which always hints as some sort of big rhythmic explosion that never quite comes. 'Dusty Bones' is a flurry of sci-fi sounds, tribal drums and frosted bass that leaves you in a spin. 'Sanza High' is a DJ Python style half stepper with menacing bass and 'Tao' is a more traditional drum & bass beat with trademark silky synths.

Review: Hats off for the cool cats! Tommy's CITH imprint whips up a hefty VA EP to kick off 2024 with and the vibes are set to max. Donnie Murdo makes sure of this with two cuts on the A-side: the sassy, soulful jungle flex 'Anonymous' and the ravier charms of 'Mice N Easy'. Everyman (Eternal Bass & Danny Styles mix 1) (5:50)
Everyman (Eternal Bass & Danny Styles mix 2) (4:33)
Review: Not to be confused with the maverick soul man Delrokski, this DRS stands for Da Real Sound, they operated around the early-to-mid 90s and comprised of Colin TNT Graine and Errol Gordon. And they made badass blueprint jungle records like this Spandangle edition from mid 1993. As the title suggests, this takes a classic vocal sample from Erol Dunkley and each remix does its thing a little way different. The 2 Bad version gives the vocal full space to breathe at a slower 160 tempo while Eternal Bass and Danny Styles lay down two seminal slabs of breakbeat funk that still make perfect sense to this day. Something for everyone.

Review: The 27th installment of the Spandangle Selection series is another one to rewire the brains of all who hear it. Pressed up to orange or black vinyl it is a time warp back to 1993 when this tune first started doing the rounds and making an impact not only on these shores but also further afield. At the same time as the original was produced, so too were a series of mixes that until now have been lost in some dusty old DAT archive, but here they come in all their glory for the first time.

Review: Previously spotted linking up on Blueskin Badger for their 'Rising' EP last year, northern junglists Duburban and Jahganaut return to the scene of the crime with two more foundation fire-ups. Both nodding at that classic emotional early 90s palette of shades and emotions with wry snippets of vocals and heavy breakbeat craftsmanship, 'If You Want My Love' is all about those meat cleaver edits thundering down and narrowly missing your neck while 'Why Must It Be This Way' is more about that subtle 4x4 rolling beneath the breaks and those epic chops and switches. Their four-tracker on Fabio's Creative Wax label kicks off with 'Don't Go Away', a cacophony of Amen breaks and celestial chords that tugs you in several directions at once. 'Foliage' then rides a deeper vibe with silky drums and cosmic ambient pads bringing a blissed-out feel. Review: The fledgling Detach label continues to show it means business with a new 12" in a lovely screen-printed sleeve. Romanian artist Dyl is the one in charge and has been serving up consistently excellent and innovative sounds now for serval years. All of these cuts mix up great sound design with languid rhythms - the first is eerie, with watery droplets and glassy tinkles hanging in the air, while 'Glasshouse 2' has a percolating rhythm down low. 'Glasshouse 3' gets a little more dynamic with a shimmering low end and freaky abstract life forms and 'Glasshouse 4' layers in more intense and ever-shifting synth lines while the closer sounds like it's roaming through a deserted factory long after it shut down.

This one is a collab between DYL and DB1 and all four are Basement Tracks. The first is predatory and slow, poised and menacing with its heavy drums and scraping synths. The second is the sound of a decaying warehouse, with dropping water pipes, big metal hits and distant crashing machines. The third is more suspensory, with a floating drum break and airy pads that zone you out before the brutal closer is a dystopian techno weapon.

Review: Australian bass collective Echo Chamber get busy with this supreme VA featuring a range of talented friends old and new. LQ takes the lead with the sublime 'Way Down' that bubbles and flexes in two system-primed forms: the spacious heavyweight Dubkasm mix and LQ and MSHCode's own breakbeat-heavier shakedown. Flip for more LQ goodies as he links up with Kloke for the fittingly titled groove-up 'Computer Bubblers' while Duburban and Galvatron finish the EP with the furious drum funk up 'Let Off The Music'. The only echo here is the reload.

Hearing Is Believing (Serum remix) (6:29)
Hearing Is Believing (7:10)
Review: Now hear this! SS's classic MA2 guise gave us some absolute anthems but 'Hearing Is Believing' is definitely up there as one of his most seminal under this alias and still does damage 27 years after its original release. As does Serum's super-bounce remix which originally dropped in 2019 but is now available on wax for the first time. A latter day classic remixed by a modern day badman... What else can we say?

Review: Roffa than ruff! Netherlands craftsman Mike Redman (AKA Deformer) unites local MCs Bigman Scep, Swift and Dart for this big singalong skank-out. Tailored for festivals, it pays homage to the roots with big party energy. Meanwhile on the remix front we're bombarded with an all-star cast as UK OGs Bizzy B and Ed Rush both get stuck in alongside Mike under his Deformer alias. Bizzy is all about the modern rave twist while Ed Rush gets an old Bad Company style and Deformer goes all-out breakcore. Elsewhere on this double 12" opus we see Mackadena get the breaks on, Rotterdam Terror Corps go full hardcore and Akira teasing us with a little twist of gabber. High grade Dutch business.

The Razors Edge (6:16)
Full Cry (6:06)
Review: Vinyl Fanatiks take us back in time once again with this powerful slab of early jungle justice from 1994. Previously released on Monita's Skelton Records, which was launched in 1992 and played an influential role in the burgeoning jungle sound, both cuts pack an incredibly timeless punch. 'The Razors Edge' was nodding at Reinforced but doing its own cosmic thing with massive pans and huge layers of space. 'Full Cry' tolls the bells with its alien stabs, stop/start motion and twisted tension. Forever future.

Duburban & Jahganaut - "Another" (5:32)
Zoomie - "Time Travelling At The Speed Of Life" (3:23)
Review: Dutch label Cat in the Bag builds on early momentum with a fourth EP, this time featuring label regards as well las newcomers. The main man Tommy The Cat takes care of the a-side with a brace of brilliant throwback jungle cuts. 'Purple Sky' pairs deep basslines and kinetic breakbeats with thoughtful pads and smeared cosmic ambiance that makes for something perfectly heady yet hard-hitting. 'Way Back When' is a brief but brilliant hip hop joint that you will want to last way longer than it does. Duburban & Jahganaut then bring the menace with a darting, ducking and diving d&b bomb steeped in classicism and newcomer Zoomie takes you into a world of deep hip hop beats with 'Time Travelling At The Speed Of Life.'

DJ Draai - "Zwaarden" (5:34)
Review: Brand new label for your radar, French platform BasSskin Records come correct with this powerful double-A from pioneering Belgian duo The Untouchables and the visionary DJ Draai. The former roll out with a super slinky and tense slab of percussive pressure while the latter takes things on more of a spiritual tip, applying bags of space in the mix and mystic eastern instruments. Cosmic without the cliches, this is the type of bass music you could never have too much of a skinful of.

DJ Infinity - "Eternal" (5:45)
Review: Destination Essex: Bill Vega and New Decade's Vivid Dreams project returns after nearly 30 years with the breath-taking 'Horizon'. A sweeping sci-fi odyssey laced with emotion, it's a reminder that deep doesn't ever need to be diluted or limp in anyway. For added measure, Bill Vega's DJ Infinity project kicks in for a big deal of the EP as he remixes 'Horizon' and lays down two golden breakbeat jams on the B: 'Zone 9' is all about those chaotic drums, sculpted and crafted with detail and weight, and 'Eternal' which is much more of a dreamy piano-laced heartstopper. Big up the Romford massive.

Review: Ras Demo relick! One of jungle's longest standing vocalists - whose discography dates back to seminal SOUR dispatches in 1994 - sees his album Frequency getting a reboot on this vinyl edition. Highlights include his rising vocal insistency on the steppy bubbler 'Jungle Buss Me', the powerful toe-to-toe lyrics of 'Protect The Life' with Sizzla Kalonji and the wobbled-out bass and soulful vocals of the final fire that is 'When You Ready'. Complete with a big remix from rave pioneer DJ Phantasy, the frequencies are high on this one!

Review: Two years after dgoHn delivered his second studio album, Undesignated Proximate - a gloriously far-sighted fusion of drum & bass, IDM and experimental electronica - that set has been given the remix treatment. As you'd expect, it's a more versatile and eclectic affair, albeit one that keeps the hazy, outer-space ethos of the original set. It naturally boasts a wealth of fine alternative versions and re-imaginings, from the reverb-heavy, dubbed-out brilliance of Meat Beat Manifesto's take on 'Daisy Takes Two' and Wisp's sparkling, piano-laden D&B re-wire of 'Electryon', to Scrasse's insanely weighty tech-step revision of 'Conty', Djrum's jazz-wise jungle spin of 'Ninnyhammer' and Skee Mask's grandiose, IDM-goes-jungle version of 'Robin's Windmill'.

Review: Waggle your wonga gang! DLR is hitting the town and he's stacking up the paper with his third studio album Money Till I Got None. Of course when we say 'paper', we actually mean 'fat greasy d&b grooves', when we say 'stacking' we actually mean 'rolling out', and when we say 'waggle your wonga', we mean 'listen up you lot because this is one the genre's tightest, brightest groove sculptors at play and he's dealing it out like Noel Edmunds in Deal Or No Deal'. Seriously, this is super timeless tackle that nods in all the right directions; heavy, techy, funky, bruised with gritty robotic soul and all the other good things Sofa Sound stand for. And when we say that, we really mean it.

Review: He'll shake you, he'll stir you, he'll hurl you around the dancefloor with tunes you didn't know existed. It's David Double O, the co-founder of Rupture and one of the most stealth-like production ninjas the game has ever known. In operation for more years than you get for a multiple murder, he finally unleashes this debut LP and, to put things simply, it's a true lesson in foundational jungle craft. The space and rattles around the breaks on 'Testing Ground', the stark dark soul of 'Bad To Worse' and the absolute relentlessness of 'Riddim Yah' are three of many highlights. If you're a regular at Rupture you'll already have these deep in your psyche. Exemplary.

Review: The North Quarter label serves up nine exclusive tracks on this superb double LP which is the culmination of many years friendship of Lenzman & Dan Stezo. The former lays down the seamless flow while the latter delivers perfectly introspective lyrics in a heart aching falsetto and all the tunes are solely from The Northern Quarter associates. The liquid drum & bass grooves are soulful and soaring, with plaintive pianos draped over the silky sequences. It's a warm and emotive listen for days at home as well as once dance floors open up again. Favourites include Zero T & Unitsouled's frictionless 'Slightest Moment' and FD's deep diving closer 'Top2Bottom VIP.'
