Forschung & Entwicklung I
Cat: NULLPUNKT 0000006. Rel: 25 Feb 19
  1. Introduction (1:06)
  2. Thesis (5:34)
  3. Premis I (3:54)
  4. Premis II (5:12)
  5. Conclusion (5:21)
Review: If you're in the mood for some industrial-strength dancefloor experiments and lo-fi workouts saturated with noise, this collaboration from old studio buddies Felix Krone and Yu Aseada AKA Ena should hit the spot. It's an altogether more foreboding and paranoid beast than their previous joint excursion, hence the new "F&E" alias. After offering up a decidedly dystopian ambient intro, the duo slowly cranks up the pressure via the industrial dub techno/electro fusion of "Thesis" and the crackling lo-fi techno crustiness of "Premis I". "Premis II" offers a more percussive and rolling take on the same murky blueprint, while "Conclusion" is a suitably hypnotic chunk of dub techno.

CIA
Cat: CIAQS 029. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. First Sound (5:20)
  2. FD & Total Science - "True North" (4:33)
  3. Timberline (6:04)
Review: FD keeps on serving up those super sweet heavy rollers with a new missive for CIA. The producer is already well loved by the label and for good reason: he's a master of his craft, here stepping through the gears after opening up with the rinsing brass and free falling abs of 'First Sound', which is simple but hugely effective. 'True North' (with Total Science) keeps on that same tip - economical but efficient sounds that encourage you to jump up. Lastly, 'Timberline' is a red hot, techno tinged tool with darker intent, but just as good an effect on all who hear it.

Die Verachtung
Die Verachtung (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: NULLPUNKT 008. Rel: 03 Feb 20
  1. Deconstructor (5:50)
  2. Die Verachtung (2:58)
  3. Reverberator (8:28)
  4. Dub Version (6:13)
Review: Berlin soldier Felix Krone continues his fractured beat assault into the 2020s with another powerful slap of technoid D&B excursions. "Deconstructor" sets the scene with a pneumatic beat drill before we dip low into the foggy sonics and halftime swamp of the contemptuous title track. Flip for more singular sounds; "Reverberator" is a woozy game of echo location as sounds fold in from all sides, creating this immense sinking sand sensation while the soft-padded kicks and oceanic pads of "Dub Version" do their best to keep us sunk. Deliciously heavy.

  4. Mentasm Dub (5:16)
  5. QKRU 2501 (4:56)
Review: Proper XR2i business right here as Fiesta Soundsystem makes his debut on Warehouse Rave with five more examples of his baity badness. Full strength rawness ranging from jungle to UKG from start to finish, highlights include the ghostly near-beatless space and dubby subversions of "GST Separate", the eerie sweeping pads and chords of "Hypersition" and the dark garage naughtiness of "Mentasm Dub". Play 'em like you stole 'em...

  1. ZBlossom (5:20)
  2. Away With The Fairies (8:04)
  3. On Me (5:48)
  4. Wiara (8:44)
Review: The big FS on Warehouse Rave to dark up the dance with the second part of his "Inflorescence" release. As always, it's a heavyweight affair... "ZBlossom" sets the agenda with a proper old school 93 type of feel. Big humming subs and twisted pitches on the breaks. It's backed by three more bumpy trips; "Away With The Fairies" is all about those early Krome & Time vibes, "On Me" is fast lane jazz that nods at the early 2000s Sao Paulo sound and shades of Soul:r while "Wiara" shuts us down on a straight up butt-wriggling jungle breakbeat vibe. Your mother warned you it's a Fiesta Soundsystem banger.

  1. Still Hope (5:39)
  2. Yes Or No (5:41)
  3. End Game (5:39)
  4. Hold Tight (5:36)
Review: Following his appearance on the last 'Glow' collection, Integral welcome young Bristol talent Fluidity to the family with his first full EP. Living up to his name, he takes us from deep soul to deep space across the whole EP. 'Still Hope' is a smouldering lament laced with a Perezian tension, 'Yes Or No' slips on a little black number and purrs in your ear, 'End Game' flips the switch entirely with an all-out turbo drone tear-up before 'Hold Tight' takes us home the scenic intergalactic route. A highly accomplished debut. Stay hopeful.

  3. Blue Lights (5:42)
  4. Lyke Dis (3:47)
Review: Watch the ride! Fokuz return with another cheeky version collection. Flipping some well known mainstream tracks into 170 work-outs, the anonymous producer gives 'My Head Is A Jungle' a kick in the Wankelmuts, upgrades Lana Del Ray into floaty, skippy territory on 'Ride' and gets us all Dizzee and blissed out on 'Blue Lights'. Last but not least all our worries are washed away on the amen-lashed 'Lyke Dis'. Vibes.

Gazillions
  1. Formally Unknown - "Lotus Turbo" (4:28)
  2. CCL & Flora FM - "Iridescent Lake" (8:13)
  3. Papers - "Beaman" (5:43)
  4. Silene - "Jiro" (6:17)
Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

  1. Altered States (6:35)
  2. Moidfy (5:02)
  3. Sanctuary (5:39)
Review: After their rise from the ashes in 2016, Transmute returned all Amen guns blazing with some massive wax slabs from the likes of Enjoy, Infect, Drum Cypha, Law & Wheeler, Tim Reaper and many more on their series of V/A EPs. After a brief break in releases, they hit us with their first 2019 release from one of the most under-the-radar acts in contemporary jungle - Fushara. All three cuts as brutal, layered and crisp as each other, there's something refreshing about the arrangement and unabashed craziness of each track. With a whole body of work that dates back to the late 2000s, if this is your first Fushara experience, you've got a massive treat in store. And if it isn't, then you'll already know how good this is!

Various Artists EP
  1. Jem One - "Network" (6:04)
  2. Section - "Dark Phrases" (4:56)
  3. Future - "Daffy's Secret Project" (5:15)
  4. Sicknote, Sweetpea & Dissect - "Jahlocia" (6:08)
Review: This is how you kick off a new decade. Skeleton have been consistent with their brutalist dispatches since re-rising in 2014 and this new V/A levels things up once again. Jem One lights the fire with darkcore grit as layers of distorted breaks and strange alien rave textures twist in and out of the mix. Section follows with nasty rave stabs and a two-step so well chiselled you could trim your whiskers on it before Future flips things for an entirely different vibe on the minimal, subby and loose-limbed "Daffy's Secret Project". Finally Sicknote, Sweetpea and Dissect bring the funk on "Jahlocia". Once again the breaks are the focus but there's more than enough groove in the bassline to put on meat on everyone's table. Bad to the bones!

Nine Strings
Cat: META 76. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Nine Strings (4:47)
  2. Eyes (4:28)
Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

  3. Chris Munky & Strafe - "Crystal Glow" (feat Ruth Royall) (4:52)
  4. Strafe - "Prisma" (4:55)
Review: Murkt welcome a rich array of talent for Unions 1 which includes four new cuts. Villem & Hadley open up with help from featured guests Riya & Collette Warren on 'Invisible,' a soulful roller with lush strings and tender pianos over a sleek beat. Fields goes solo for 'Hubby', a minimal stepper with a warped bassline that dries down deep. Chris Munky & Strafe explore soulful but icy soundscapes on their free flowing and liquid gem 'Crystal Glow' which is made all the more emotive by Ruth Royall and finally, Strafe serves up some twisted rhythms and deft drum programming on 'Prima' which will tie your mind and body in knots.

Review: Ed Keeley seems to have dropped the "DJ" bit from his Friction moniker, but he remains one of the most in-demand selectors on the drum and bass scene. Having released his first mix CD way back in 2000, he's something of a veteran. That makes it doubly surprising that this is his first contribution to the FabricLive series. Predictably, it's a bit of a whirlwind 70-minutes, with Friction constantly entertaining by restlessly chopping between snare-heavy rollers (Nymfo, Insideinfo & Mefjus), twinkling carnival jams (Technimatic's sparkling old skool tribute to the West Country, "Bristol"), deeper flavours (Alix Perez, the wide-eyed rush of AI's "You Can Dream"), jaunty liquid funk (Chords, a tasty Calibre remix of two) and techier beats (Icicle, Ulterior Motive & Judda).
