  1. GOJI (6:10)
  2. GOJI (Demdike Stare Hypersensitive World remix) (6:37)
Review: After a strong and distinctive run of outsider electronics from artists like Meze, Plants Army Revolver and Nicolo, HomeMadeZucchero founder Giesse steps up to the plate with a deadly concoction that uses breakneck drum programming to whip up a feeling somewhere between technical jungle and hyper-modern dubstep. Where "GOJI" is all sharp angles and bold sound design, the mighty Demdike Stare are on hand to deliver a remix that shirks convention (would you expect any less?) by barreling into a noise-caked tunnel of intensity that opens out into a fractured breakbeat meditation broken up with flamboyant handbrake turns to keep the dancers on their toes.

New Town Sound Boy Vol 1

  1. Cause It Hurts (5:33)
  2. Brush Dem Off (5:36)
  3. Skanking (3:46)
  4. Never Give In (5:19)
Review: With roots going back to 1990, playing a role in the earliest foundations of jungle, Jim 2Bad Ryan reboosts his original Ruff Cut imprint with four future-thrusting jungle explorations. "Cause It Hurts" takes the lead with a soulful dub twist conjuring Fats-level soul vibes. "Brush Dem Off" lowers the tempo for a grimey twist that hits with both a classic Shut Up & Dance roots and Kano-style 2019 edge. Flip for "Skanking", a deep warbler that nods towards the classic Dread style before "Never Give In" closes the shop on a militant steppy tip. Badboy for life.

Nibiru
Nibiru (12")
Cat: PM 028. Rel: 03 Dec 13
  1. Nibiru
  2. The Orchid
Review: Naming a tune after a world destroying comet collision is a bold statement of intent. But if anyone can back up such deadly connotations, it's Gremlinz and Ahmad. Stepping back to the 95 era jungle recipe - all industrial amens and harrowing FX - it really is as destructive as the name suggests. With this theory in mind, you'd expect "The Orchid" to be delicate and beautiful. No chance; while much of the groove is more stripped back than the A-side, the rusted breakbeats and abyss plunging subs are just as explosive. If this is the sound to the end of the world, bring it on.

Doubtful Being (limited 12")
Cat: WDZ 001. Rel: 15 Sep 20
  1. Riffz - "Doubtful Being" (5:31)
  2. Riffz - "No Visiblity" (5:22)
  3. Green Wald - "Hot Pushin" (4:26)
  4. Green Wald - "Gangsta" (5:48)
Review: Riffz and Green Wald take two tracks each per side on what proves to be a varied but accomplished showcase of styles. 'Doubtful Being' revels in deep, clunking sub-bass pressure, crazy effects and timestretching, nodding perhaps to the scrambled breakbeat glory of Goldie and 4Hero's early 90s collaboration Rufige Kru. Jungle techno - that often forgotten missing link between rave and jungle - informs the four-to-the-floor but breaks-splattered 'No Visibility', the second offering from Riffz, an unusual vein to mine but all the more refreshing for it. Green Wald also harks back to the moments before the big bang that was jungle, opting for a slightly slower than normal tempo but plenty of beat manipulation and mixing desk skullduggery on 'Hot Pushin', before closing proceedings with the heavy but jazzy 'Gangsta', probably one for those who loved T Power's early work on the SOUR label.

  6. Foul Play - "Being With You" (6:40)
  7. Noise Factory - "The Future" (4:31)
  8. Fallout - "The Morning After" (Sunrise mix) (8:31)
Review: This year marks three decades since the launch of Rage, the weekly London club night that not only made Fabio and Grooverider stars, but also proved hugely influential in the development of hardcore and jungle. To celebrate, the long-serving DJ duo is offering up an epic compilation of Rage favourites split over four double albums. Part One offers a great introduction to the series, flitting between familiar favourites (the throbbing, bass-heavy Dub of Leftfield's "Not Forgotten", Lennie De Ice's hardcore anthem "We Are I.E"), lesser celebrated gems (the dreamy deep house of One Tribe's "Is This All"), proto-jungle classics (Wots My Code's sub-heavy, bleep-sporting "Dubplate", Foul Play's lusciously hazy "Being With You") and genuine rude boy smashers (Noise Factory's "The Future").
