Lost Friends EP
Cat: GMN 001. Rel: 06 Apr 23
Lost Friends (5:22)
Ame (feat Alix Perez) (6:00)
Ivory (4:35)
Can't Let Go (4:14)
Review: Gemini Gemini; a brand new imprint from ex-Ivy Lab member Halogenix as he continues to set new benchmarks and standards in d&b. Flexing his most soulful side across this inaugural EP, each of the four tracks is steeped in emotion and meaning. Especially the super poignant title track as it's dedicated to the tragically departed Ebo Graham from Foreign Beggars. Elsewhere we're loaded up with a stunning Alix Perez collab, we're dazzled by the wonderfully jazzy 'Ivoy' and frazzled by the beautiful finale 'Can't Let It Go'. Every track is a highlight

PFTD (3:08)

Bliss (4:12)
Review: Contender for one of the biggest 140 tunes of the year, Halogenix and Strategy's 'PFTD' finally sees wax justice and sounds even heavier than it has before. Praying for the dead with every sharp Manny bar, Strategy works his lyrical magic over Halogenix's Lordel-style swagger, it's been a sure-fire festival favourite ever since. Comes complete with 'Bliss', another highly strung 140 piece laced with more tension than an elastic band testing factory. Halogenix has been on a roll this year.

Fly Away (6:47)
Cloud Burst (5:59)
Beets (6:01)
Review: Welcome to Harmony Resurgence Episode 2, one of the deepest and most personal albums Deep Jungle boss DJ Harmony has ever crafted. Soulfully, it's special dedication to his mother. Sonically it's a special treat for us all as he runs us through his atmospheric paces. Split into three parts, this is where it all begins - 'Fly Away' sets the scene with big pads and emotional sonic scenery whisking you off your feet. 'Cloud Burst' follows. Breath-takingly spacious, its swooning chords keeps us sky bound throughout before 'Beets' surges in and brings us right back to mother earth with its gritty breaks and tribal insistency. Planet aligning material.

Merciful (6:18)
Everybody (6:07)
Unconscious Mind (6:48)
Review: The Deep Jungle bossman Harmony returns to his 2022 album Harmony Resurgence Episode 2 with this second vinyl outing. Following the inaugural volume, this second part packs three more striking tear-ups from the LP. 'Merciful' kicks things off with brazen hurricane soul and more breaks than a fracture clinic while 'Everybody' takes us down a much more chilled, serene route with a series of salubrious guitar slides before dropping us into some wild drum wizardry. Finally we have 'Unconscious Mind', a work of much more spacious design that's not dissimilar to the early output on Headz. Proper grown up tackle, the whole album is worth a deep dive if you have the time to explore it. Big up Harmony.

Only One (6:14)
Void (6:10)
Here We Go (6:15)
Freak (6:40)
Review: Welcome to the third and final instalment of Deep Jungle bossman DJ Harmony's album Harmony Resurgence Episode 2 wherein the London stalwart runs us through our paces with the concluding four tracks. As always with Harmony, the focus is on the atmosphere and emotion as we're hurled from tear-up to tear-up. 'Only One' is a big drum piece with precision chiselled breaks, 'Void' takes more of a technoid twist with its outer planetary trembles and tingles while 'Here We Go' comes with a jazzy, skippy twist. Last but not least we have 'Freak', a gentle album closer with a super soulful twist. Harmony restored; make sure you grab all three parts to this beautiful album.

Luna
Luna (12")
Cat: DAT 058. Rel: 10 Jan 24
Luna (6:37)
Mystical (6:18)
Review: Deep Jungle bossman Harmony lives up to his name and aligns universal frequencies with his first 12" of 24. 'Luna' takes the lead. A robust choppy cut that nods in the direction of Krome & Time with its sweeping pads and crafty broken twists. 'Mystical' brings a little more dreamy energy with its whirling chords and heavier sense of momentum. Both sound like they were prised out of 1994's hands fresh off the cutting lathe. Few contemporary jungle labels are operating at Harmony's level right now.

One Time (Collectors Edition)
One Time (Collectors Edition) (limited hand-numbered 12" picture disc)
Cat: TEMPOSPEED 06. Rel: 07 Apr 22
One Time (7:32)
Just Me (6:04)
Something Nu? (5:39)
Review: A blast from the past made in the present: Tempo Records present this gem from Hidden Agenda (Jason Goodings), who operates in a well-trodden but no less effective drum n' bass style. Printer Jams and running companions abound on this three-track 12", fusing urban breakbeat, old-skool jazz and obscure samples to solid effect. 'One Time' certainly won't be playing on our turntables just one time, while 'Just Me' eases into neurofunk and 'Something Nu?' lowers the tempo to deliver just as much - fans of Concord Dawn or John B will be impressed.

Golden Sky
Cat: HORRIFIC 013. Rel: 31 May 23
Golden Sky (6:22)
1978 (6:21)
Review: Following his return to the controls last year on Tempo Records, Jason Goodings once again flies the Hidden Agenda flag, 20 years after his and his now tragically departed brother Mark last released music. Hugely pioneering in the deeper side of the Soul:r/Creative Source style of drum & bass, here Jason brings that timeless sound back into our souls again. 'Golden Sky' is a heart-breaking slab of cinematic goosebumpery while '1978' takes a grittier style of funk that matches the artwork personally painted by James Horrific himself. Vinyl only, this is a real moment to saviour.

Dust
Dust (translucent pink marbled vinyl 10")
Cat: AKO 10016. Rel: 01 Nov 23
Dust (5:46)
The Cruel Sea (5:00)
Review: Now for something completely different! Forever ahead of the game, Hidden Agenda's role in leftfield jungle soul has been undeniable and hugely influential since the mid-90s and it's amazing to see Jason back now and on such a maverick edge. Both of these cuts hit with a unique vibe and flavour that's so refreshing to hear. 'Dust' is a psychedelic wonderland that slides along with shimmering layers of percussion, guitar and keys. 'Cruel Sea' takes things a little darker as an edgy, unpredictable drive takes the lead. Think Krust's recent work on Crosstown Rebels and you're on the right planet. AKO Beatz never miss a punch.

Inhaler (Hector Zazou Mr Pink remix) (5:48)
Review: To celebrate the 25th birthday of their celebrated debut album, A New Sound Spectacular, the Belgian band has decided to offer-up this selection of long-forgotten remixes of two tracks from the set, '2Wicky' and 'Inhaler', both of which were originally released on now delated 12" singles. The A-side highlight is undoubtedly DJ Pulse's terrifically spacey drum & bass revision of '2Wicky', though the heavy trip-hop psychedelia of the 'Not So Extended Hoovering' version is also surprisingly good. Over on the flip, you'll find two more D&B-inspired takes on 'Inhaler': a wonderfully deep and jazzy 'Mr Pink' revision courtesy of Pierre Job AKA Hector Zazou, and the band's own string-laden 'Drum & Orch' revision.

Review: Those with their ear to the drum & bass underground will know that Hugh Hardie has been dropping slick tunes on Hospital Records for many years. The Cambridge-raised producer made a move to Solvent Records recently though and now is back with his third album, Jukebox. It is his best yet with early singles 'Blush' featuring Zara Kershaw and 'Face Off' with PAV4N of Foreign Beggars already winning plenty of plaudits. He shows his widescreen sound off in all its glory here - there are soul drenched rollers, lush vocal tunes and collaborations with the likes of Footsie, Degs, Killa P and more.

Review: Bristol-based Hippo Sound System has a sound that draws on a wide sphere of reference from Afro to downtempo, tropicalia to dub. Origins in their debut album and comes deep in sound system culture but laden with evocative details that ate you away from the here and now to a humid jungle clearing full of ancestral rhythms, jazz freedom and contemporary bass music. It's a colourful and psychedelic listen that fuses the traditional and ritualistic with the futuristic and physical. Great drops, hooky melodies and a global feel make this one of the most unique albums you will have heard in some time.
