Monolith (12")
Cat: DROOGS 005. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. Gremlinz & Jesta & Kalu - "Monolith" (5:23)
  2. Friske - "City Limits" (6:04)
Review: Last year the Droogs label released a sole EP of "hard hitters for wild dancefloors" - a split 12" featuring quality cuts by Holsten and Artilect. They've repeated the trick here, offering up a pair of slammers featuring contributions from four artists. Jesta and Kalu join Gremlinz on formidably heavy A-side "Monolith", a thrusting, mind-mangling fusion of crunchy jungle breaks, warped sub-bass pulses, scattergun percussion fills and creepy sonic textures. In comparison, Friske's flipside cut "City Limits" is positively laidback, though the creepy blend of sustained chords, short vocal samples, fizzing electronic flashes, raw bass and hot-stepping D&B drums are still formidably floor-friendly.

MDS 006
MDS 006 (hand-stamped 7" + insert limited to 200 copies)
Cat: MDS 006. Rel: 14 Feb 19
  1. 174 B7B5 (4:34)
  2. 154 Materials Stardust Memories (4:36)
Review: On the next record from Main Drain Studios, Chicago artist K-rAd brings two high-tempo cuts loaded with their distinct blend of bright, nimble production.

The A-side, "174_B7B5" is a total D&B tear-out. Thundering subs carry along waves of arpeggiated synths, while whimsical samples cut the tension of the winding breakbeat flurries.
On the flip side, horns fade in and out of "154_Materials Stardust Memories ", conjuring visions of a metropolis at dusk, with jazzy interludes telling tales while lean, skittering drums & warped bass lines pepper the road along the way.

Jungle Fi Dread
Cat: 31RS 041. Rel: 30 Aug 19
  1. Jungle Fi Dread (6:05)
  2. What Time Dread (6:11)
Review: A master of all things dark and gritty when it comes to jungle and drum & bass, Ray Keith is back with a vengeance here across two devastating cuts. A side "Jungle Fi Dread" is built on his archetypal dread bass sound, stepping breaks and flailing hits, and it adds up to a controlled bit of dance floor frenzy with numerous peaks and troughs. "What Time Dread" on the flip has a rude vocal stretched and warped over rinsed out breakbeats that shimmer while a droning bassline conjures up some sort of doom-laden final level boss scene from your favourite RPG.

Bad Man
Bad Man (12")
Cat: FUNC 046. Rel: 21 Nov 18
  1. Bad Man (6:04)
  2. Air Raid (6:45)
Review: Former Concord Dawn man Evan Short last recorded as Kiljoy in the early 2000s. In fact, this boisterous outing on Function Records appears to be his first outing under the alias for 14 years. Now based in the Cook Islands and working as a fraud investigator (true story bro), Short has lost none of his dancefloor fire or focus. "Bad Man" is particularly potent, with the New Zealander peppering a blistering jungle rhythm and heavyweight bassline with angular rave stabs and fizzing sound effects. "Air Raid" is similarly retro-futurist in tone, with foreboding and doom-laden riffs buzzing around another formidably sweaty old school drum track and aggressive bass.

The Assassinator
Cat: PTKK 1. Rel: 30 Apr 20
  1. The Assassinator (6:31)
  2. Visible Thief (5:17)
Review: UK producer Killaklan 001 takes care of the inaugural release on the new Prototype label in fine fashion. The tasteful two tracker rolls deep on both sides, with shadowy grooves and late night atmospheres drawing you in from the off. Opener "The Assassinator" is the moodiest of the pair, with a hunting lead that encourages you to follow it down a deserted urban metropolis in the dead of night. "Visible Thief" has more hard hitting, crashing drum loops but plenty of breaks in between to allow the darkness of the landscape to really sink in. A fine start to what is set to be a fine label.

Constructive Ambiguity
Cat: CRM 240. Rel: 10 Sep 20
  1. Constructive Ambiguity (12:07)
  2. Tree Of Life (10:56)
Review: The Bristol scientist returns! After a smattering of outings on the likes of Doc Scott's 31, one of drum & bass music's most important and influential boundary-breakers is about to drop his first album in 14 years... The Edge Of Everything drops on Crosstown Rebels in November, and here's the first teaser: 'Constructive Ambiguity', a cinematic 12 minute opus, it groans and yearns with a solemn musicality before eventually exploding in a two-step tear-out. 'Tree Of Life', meanwhile, is a much more militant piece of work with its hammering kicks, ominous drone and fearlessness. War music, pure and simple.

Sigh (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SUBTLE 023. Rel: 04 Dec 19
  1. Sigh (6:24)
  2. Fernweh (5:17)
  3. Trinket (4:51)
Review: There's something pleasingly inventive and unusual about this EP from Kyam, a Cardiff-based producer who has been making his mark in drum and bass over the last few years. Check for example opener "Sigh", where delay-laden, indie style guitar motifs and thickset sub-bass catch the ear over a tweaked, jungle-influenced breakbeat. He continues to dub-out distant rock riffs on the creepier and arguably heavier "Fernweh", while closing cut "Trinket" does a terrific job in joining the dots between early '90s cut-up jungle business (complete with booming sub-bass), dub and more jazzy D&B flavours.

Noodles EP
Noodles EP (red vinyl 12" + MP3 download code in embossed sleeve)
Cat: CRIT 144. Rel: 11 Sep 20
  1. Noodles (4:26)
  2. Fade Out (4:24)
  3. Blaze Heat (4:24)
Review: Serum and Critical Records boss Kasra join forces for three tracks that see the former's sharp edged sonics and the more atmospheric, experimental textures of the latter working in perfect harmony. 'Noodles' has a serious sci-fi vibe that harks back to the early days of Metalheadz, set to work across a sturdier, more rolling selection of steady, heavy beats. The shuddering bass and choppy rhythms of 'Fade Out' give space for plenty of modular synth action - ultimately a feature of all three tracks here - and affairs are topped off with an attitude=heavy spoken word sample. 'Blaze Heat' has a more hip-hop slanted vibe, slotting in neatly to the wall of drum & bass breakbeats, but again the over-riding focus is some fresh, unheard wigging out in the higher frequencies. Nice work all round, and a personnel combination with a lot to recommend it.

  15. Dream Sequence (feat James Everingham) (6:35)
Review: Classically trained Medschool menace, Keeno is just shin-deep into his career and here he is already laying down his second album. Impressed? You should be. Here we find him chiselling and honing his sound with even more sonic style and consistency. The classical phrases and dynamics of the opener "Faithless" say it all. Other highlights include the evocative early morning run of the title track, the softer focus, introspective feels and gradual builds of "Bleary Eyed" and the more mischievous drama and dynamics of the slippery synth-led roll-out "The Chase". 18 months between albums can often be too short a gap for an artist to really deliver something new, fresh and exciting but Keeno's musicality and ear for drama ensure that he's smashed it once again. Here's to the future...

  6. Absolute Zero & Subphonics - "The Code" (7:17)
  7. John B - "Pressure" (7:16)
  8. Dom & Roland - "Trauma" (5:35)
Review: Some 21 years after it first hit record stores, Kemistry & Storm's legendary "DJ Kicks" mix is back in record stores. Released a few months before Kemistry's tragic death in a freak road accident, it remains a timeless snapshot of drum & bass during the sound's formative first decade. This DJ-friendly vinyl edition gathers together some of the mix's most potent club cuts, with highlights including the weighty, mind-altering late night sleaziness of Jonny L's "Uneasy", the hot-stepping heaviness of DJ Die's Bristol D&B classic "Clear Skyz", the majestic mix of spacey electronics and low-end heat that is John B's breathless "Pressure" and the sweeping strings and filthy sub-bass of Dom + Roland's "Trauma".

  6. Track 6 (6:01)
Review: We all deserve an Exkursion after the weirdness of 2020 and US artist Mark Kloud has the perfect trip with his debut album Moonquake. Already out in the wild, doing its thing digitally, here we find some of the best tracks on a special, not to mention limited, vinyl version. If you know Mark's output on the likes of Lossless, Paradise Lost and Onset, then you'll know the levels of deep we're talking here. Just as much informed by dub, techno and ambient as it is drum & bass, highlights include the palpitating dungeon jam 'Murder Too' and the stuttering, snake-like breaks of the untitled finale piece. And that's just the tip of this iceberg; tremors will persist for quite some time to come...

  10. Keter The Heavenly (7:47)
  11. Only God Can Tell (6:37)
Review: 14 years in the making! Krust's follow up to 'Hidden Knowledge' is every bit as diverse, uncompromising and explorative as you'd hope. Blurring the lines between jungle and techno, your brain and the dancefloor, time and space, across the collection the Bristol pioneer takes us to some strange and singular places; the tension and sci-fi isolation of '7 Known Truths', the swaggering space funk of 'Keter The Heavenly', the marching drama and powerful sense of foreboding on 'Negative Returns', the blitzkrieg amen-shattered opener 'Hegel Dialectic', the list goes on. Each cut building and merging to create a truly unique landscape that offers up something new on every investigation, it'll take another 14 years to unravel this album's many mysteries. Play it edge to edge.

Focussing on the deeper side of J Robinson's label, Theory takes the lead wirth a Goodlooking style deamy stepper, Robinson himself links with the one and only Ink for a stunning and sultry R&B flavoured breakbeat gem while on the flip Repertoire's Law & Kola Nut continue the soul vibes on "Your Love Is So True" before Wetman dries us of with pure science as "Golden Teacher" signs us out with rattling drums and deep breath vocals that totally live up to the Meditator name.
