Techmosphere 03
Techmosphere 03 (blue marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: SCI 027. Rel: 01 Nov 19
  1. Mav - "Northern Light" (Silence Groove remix) (5:39)
  2. Silence Groove - "Patterns" (5:54)
  3. Bungle - "None Of Them" (6:27)
  4. Actraiser - "Starsigns" (Random Movement remix) (5:45)
  5. Naibu - "Clouds" (Electrosoul remix) (5:21)
  6. DJ Trax - "Just Breath" (6:53)
Review: Techmosphere 03 is a monstrous 25 track album on Scientific Records that will be available digitally soon, but before that comes a sampler packed with six gems from it, three of which are originals, and the other three are remixes. Silence Groove's remix of "Northern Light" and his original "Patterns" are two silky and liquid rollers that go super deep, while Electrosoul's take on Naibu's "Clouds" is much more ragged and rhythmic thanks to its crisp hits and rasping bass. There's more raw energy on the crashing loops of DJ Trax's "Just Breath" but a heavenly vocal will also suspend you in a celestial atmosphere in between drum breaks.

Power Relations
Power Relations (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ACOLOUR 002. Rel: 13 Jun 16
  1. Glass Fist (reprise)
  2. Heads & Ordinary Concrete
Review: Moopie's A Colourful Storm label launched earlier this year as an extension of the popular online platform that has hosted a rich and diverse stream of mixes from the likes of Imaginary Softwoods, DJ Nobu, Frak and Rabih Beaini to name a few. Pro-tip: do check that latter live mix from the Morphine boss! It was the archival sounds of Denial and their lost Oz classic cover of "California Dreaming" that heralded the arrival of A Colourful Storm, but this second release on the label switches the focus to more contemporary fare. Power Relations is a two track 12" of bad-mannered, f*cked up club trax from Melbourne's Nerve. The stomping, nocturnal techno of the title track is backed with a Photek-meets-Sunn O))) terror stepper entitled "Heads & Ordinary Concrete". For fans of Regis, Emptyset and Blackest Ever Black.

London Town
London Town (limited 12")
Cat: LNDNTWN 001. Rel: 15 Sep 20
  1. London Town (5:38)
  2. Agony Fi The Body (6:03)
  3. Lick It Back (4:36)
  4. It's Gonna Get Rough (6:34)
Review: Belgian badman Nickynutz has been flying the jungle flag for the best part of 20 years and his beats remain just as fizzy and unpredictable as they did back on his early Animal Breaks outings. Here we find him paying homage to the jungle drum & bass motherland LDN with four crisp sound system jams that all tap into that original inner city melting pot that lit the fuse in the first place. 'London Town' breezes with a touch of hardcore promise thank to the dreamy synths, 'Agony Fi De Body' and 'Lick It Back' are heavier on the ragga and breaks tips while 'It's Gonna Get Rough' signs out with a beautiful Trojan adieu. Wicked.

Classic Symptoms 12
Cat: NHSCS 12EP. Rel: 11 Sep 20
  1. Nu:Tone - "Missing Link" (5:38)
  2. Danny Byrd - "Gold Rush" (feat Brookes Brothers) (6:27)
  3. Logistics - "Jungle Music" (4:49)
  4. Commix - "Bear Music" (6:12)
Review: There is one Hospital that you always want to visit, and that is the one overseen by these drum & bass legends. For the 12th instalment of their Classic Symptoms series they dive deep into the vaults to unearth four gems from the 2006 to 2009 era. Nu:Tone gets the appointment underway with the retells roller that is 'Missing Link' before things get super sweet with the liquid flow and soul drenched vocals of 'Gold Rush' feat Brookes Brothers by Danny Byrd. Logistics goes for a drilling old school beat with classic samples and heady vibes and closing things out is Commix, whose stripped back and shadowy stepper 'Bear Music' sounds as crucial now as it ever did.

Sting Blade EP
Cat: META 84. Rel: 06 Mar 20
  1. Sting Blade (4:13)
  2. Nymfo & Martyn - "What's Happening?" (5:09)
  3. No Choice (4:55)
Review: Oh gosh. Last spotted on the mothership label in 2015 on Mikal's "Where They At" EP, Danger Dutchman Nymfo returns to Metalheadz with his first full EP for the label. It's every bit as heavy and badass as you'd hope it to be. "Sting Blade" rolls out with a skinny-fit break and a bassline so flabby and bulbous it folds over the edges. It's backed by two more monoliths; "What's Happening" sees fellow Dutchy Martyn join the action with just a touch of classic Blue Note style jazziness. Finally, "No Choice" settles the matter on some 23rd century twisted Optical style funk. Easily one of Nymfo's finest moments so far (which is saying something).

Revolution
Revolution (12")
Cat: ER 025. Rel: 24 Sep 19
  1. Persian & DJ Staf - "Revolution" (4:45)
  2. Persian - "D Dub Retwist" (4:29)
  3. Rumbling Interlude (1:55)
  4. Persian & Nick Dunton - "Milton 21" (5:52)
  5. Persian - "Not Nuff Time" (feat Lauryn) (5:57)
Review: Since kickstarting the Existence Is Resistance label back in 2011, Persian has been on a mission to offer up sleazy, forthright and downright inspired UK bass music. He's at it again on "Revolution", joining forces with various like-minded fellow producers to lay down more scintillating and searing sounds. He first joins forces with DJ Staf for a bombastic revivalist jungle affair (the ace "Revolution"), before inviting Nick Dunton to help wrap wild electronics and gentle melodies around a more off-kilter D&B rhythm on "Milton 21". Elsewhere, Lauryn adds evocative vocals to the dreamy breakbeat flex of "Not Nuff Time", while solo salvo "D Dub Retwist" sounds like a more sub-heavy take on the mid-90s Ninja Tune trip-hop sound.

Cat: NHSCS 13EP. Rel: 13 Nov 20
  1. SPY - "Step & Flow" (6:25)
  2. Keeno - "Nocturne" (5:53)
  3. Nu:Tone - "Tides" (feat Lea Lea) (5:42)
  4. LSB - "If You're Here" (feat Sophia Wardman - Luke Tangerine Dreaming VIP) (5:56)
Review: The Classic Symptoms series is all about Hospital serving up the finest moments from their rich back catalogue. This is the 13th such instalment and features four more perfectly nostalgic jams from drum & bass kingpins S.P.Y, Keeno, Nu:Tone and LSB. All of these will send you right back to the 2014-2016 era in which they were made. As such you can expect plenty of euphoric melodies toe wash over you with soulful, smile-broadening vocals embellishing the grooves and rich, dynamic drum work carrying things forwards into the future, even now years later.

Cat: RE 21. Rel: 20 Nov 19
  1. White Sky, Nicotine Lips (7:50)
  2. Killing Daylight (5:59)
  3. Vurrgh (7:08)
  4. About The Beauty Of Gold Among Ruins (5:14)
Review: Nekyia (previously of Neurosplit) last appeared in November 2018 on a standout VA for Ruffhouse & Gremlinz's UVB-76. Now they're back with a solo outing on RE:ST that offers some thrillingly dark and deep bass music. "White Sky, Nicotine Lips" is a superbly heavyweight rhythm built on lurching loops that pin you to the floor, "Killing Daylight" is even more empty and unsettling, like prowling a desolate urban landscape. Flipside "Vurrgh" gets busy with minimal drum programming and layers of static and industrial hum and hiss that bring a real sense of paranoia. "About The Beauty Of Gold Among Ruins" closes out with bleak and smoky warehouse techno that hypnotises you in no time. Vital stuff.

  11. Bird Of Paradise (4:39)
Review: Four years on from his second album, 2, Hospital's go-to Belgian bass connoisseur Netsky returns with his third long player, the cunningly-titled 3. Boris Daenen has the fine art of the album down to a tee and there is a real sense of occasion about this 11 track epic. Last year's festival favourite "Rio", the Digital Farm Animals-featuring, Brazilian DNB-style is a fine example of the Netksy sound right now and it features prominently here, a beacon to coax people in and experience the further delights of 3 with Chromeo and Emeli Sande also among the cast of contributing names. 3 is energetic, brash, a reflection of its producer's discography, and yet something new entirely simultaneously.
