  2. Thesis (5:34)
  3. Premis I (3:54)
  4. Premis II (5:12)
  5. Conclusion (5:21)
Review: If you're in the mood for some industrial-strength dancefloor experiments and lo-fi workouts saturated with noise, this collaboration from old studio buddies Felix Krone and Yu Aseada AKA Ena should hit the spot. It's an altogether more foreboding and paranoid beast than their previous joint excursion, hence the new "F&E" alias. After offering up a decidedly dystopian ambient intro, the duo slowly cranks up the pressure via the industrial dub techno/electro fusion of "Thesis" and the crackling lo-fi techno crustiness of "Premis I". "Premis II" offers a more percussive and rolling take on the same murky blueprint, while "Conclusion" is a suitably hypnotic chunk of dub techno.

  1. Fanu - "Aura Eleven" (5:40)
  2. HMR - "Prophecy" (version) (5:55)
  3. DDOG - "A New Sound" (4:56)
  4. Infader - "Marble Madness" (6:07)
Review: Finland Freshness! Straight Up Breakbeat celebrate the heaviest of homeland hurters with this collection taken from their full compilation. All national badmen, all remarkably forward thinking in their dynamics and uncompromised weight, label boss and Finnish jungle OG Fanu takes the lead with a smoky, slower jazzy cut "Aura Eleven", newcomer HMR keeps the spacious mood going with "Prophecy" where more tidal wave breaks are soften by smoky horns and sci-fi soul. Flip for the ruffage as the mysterious DDOG gets wild on the clattering breakbeats and Infader closes with the most militant track of the record "Marble Madness". What a celebration of homegrown talent. Let's hope this becomes a series.

Die Verachtung
Die Verachtung (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: NULLPUNKT 008. Rel: 03 Feb 20
  1. Deconstructor (5:50)
  2. Die Verachtung (2:58)
  3. Reverberator (8:28)
  4. Dub Version (6:13)
Review: Berlin soldier Felix Krone continues his fractured beat assault into the 2020s with another powerful slap of technoid D&B excursions. "Deconstructor" sets the scene with a pneumatic beat drill before we dip low into the foggy sonics and halftime swamp of the contemptuous title track. Flip for more singular sounds; "Reverberator" is a woozy game of echo location as sounds fold in from all sides, creating this immense sinking sand sensation while the soft-padded kicks and oceanic pads of "Dub Version" do their best to keep us sunk. Deliciously heavy.

Alert & Waiting EP
Cat: 7 TH12029. Rel: 04 Mar 20
  1. Alert & Waiting (5:42)
  2. They Know (5:57)
  3. The Way (6:05)
  4. So Good (6:09)
Review: FFF is back one again with the renegade jungle beats on 7th Storey Projects. The self-styled breakcore DJ, producer and live act from the Netherlands has been hard at it since the 90s and continues to find interesting new styles within his own sound. This latest EP will twist you inside out right from the off. Opener "Alert & Waiting" is a real synapse twitching affair that never sits still, "They Know" settles into a smoother and fluid groove while "The Way" is a busy, throwback jam with stoner chords and a hefty bottom end. Closer "So Good" is an all out assault drenched in reverb.

  1. The Prowler (5:53)
  2. Miles Away (5:58)
  3. Death Warrant (5:14)
  4. Our Planet (4:15)
Review: Triple X rated jungle from the triple F flexing breakbusting Dutchman FFF. We all know the drill by now; floor-bound psycho soul with its feet firmly planted in 1995 and is made for your mixing pleasure. "The Prowler" is based around whirling paranoid pads and percussion heavy rolling breaks, "Miles Away" takes a more dreamy approach with lilting arpeggios and stuttering break rolls, "Death Warrant" adds some 707 ghetto jitters into the moody mix while "Our Planet" closes with more poignant rave elements and drums that slur so hard the police want to take their driving licence. FFFliping great.

Re Thinkable EP (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: KEYS 001. Rel: 11 Mar 16
  1. Re-Thinkable (6:05)
  2. The Worst (6:02)
Review: Sneaky under-the-counter bootleg business, as two popular R&B ballads undergo the breezy 170 BPM rolling soul treatment. Alicia Keys and Drake's "Unthinkable" gets the A-side with Alicia's voice working perfectly over the tempo and delicate piano emphasising her emotion. Meanwhile on the flip Jhene Aiko's "The Worst" enjoys some classic amen power with lavish synth washes and syrupy subs. The best.

  2. Blue Wine (5:16)
  3. Just Vibe With It (5:20)
  4. You Know How To (5:43)
Review: There's no details on the identity about the "mystery artist" behind this brilliant EP on Fokuz Recordings, which may have something to do with the cheeky - but utterly brilliant - drum and bass rework of a Phylis Hyman disco classic nestling at the end of side two ("You Know How To"). While that has "future festival anthem" written all over it, there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere on the EP, not least the string-laden poignance of liquid opener "Lovely" and the tougher, wobble bass-propelled goodness that is "Blue Wine". The EP's other cut, a scratch-happy fusion of modern R&B and classic D&B, is also rather good.

  2. CCL & Flora FM - "Iridescent Lake" (8:13)
  3. Papers - "Beaman" (5:43)
  4. Silene - "Jiro" (6:17)
Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Cat: SHA 165. Rel: 02 Sep 20
  1. Friction - "For This" (feat Liam Bailey) (4:30)
  2. Pola & Bryson - "Cold Love" (5:00)
  3. Document One - "Like This" (4:55)
  4. Monrroe - "Horizon" (feat Jinadu) (4:51)
Review: Friction's Shogun Audio return to update their "Shuriken" collection of classics from their vaults for a first-time, special collector's vinyl press. While previous editions have dug deep into the label's full repertoire, this one captures a much more recent snapshot of the label and the deeper sound it's been celebrating in the last few years. Friction takes the lead with the subtle, sultry charms of "For This" with Liam Bailey from the label's recent 15 year anniversary collection, before Pola & Bryson's 2019 chiller "Cold Love" raises the cosmic pressure. Flip for some superb double bass-slapping funk from Document One in the form of "Like This" before man-of-the-moment Monrroe shuts down the EP with the belting star-gazer soul of "Horizon". Stunning.

Review: After their rise from the ashes in 2016, Transmute returned all Amen guns blazing with some massive wax slabs from the likes of Enjoy, Infect, Drum Cypha, Law & Wheeler, Tim Reaper and many more on their series of V/A EPs. After a brief break in releases, they hit us with their first 2019 release from one of the most under-the-radar acts in contemporary jungle - Fushara. All three cuts as brutal, layered and crisp as each other, there's something refreshing about the arrangement and unabashed craziness of each track. With a whole body of work that dates back to the late 2000s, if this is your first Fushara experience, you've got a massive treat in store. And if it isn't, then you'll already know how good this is!

Monolith
Monolith (12")
Cat: DROOGS 005. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. Gremlinz & Jesta & Kalu - "Monolith" (5:23)
  2. Friske - "City Limits" (6:04)
Review: Last year the Droogs label released a sole EP of "hard hitters for wild dancefloors" - a split 12" featuring quality cuts by Holsten and Artilect. They've repeated the trick here, offering up a pair of slammers featuring contributions from four artists. Jesta and Kalu join Gremlinz on formidably heavy A-side "Monolith", a thrusting, mind-mangling fusion of crunchy jungle breaks, warped sub-bass pulses, scattergun percussion fills and creepy sonic textures. In comparison, Friske's flipside cut "City Limits" is positively laidback, though the creepy blend of sustained chords, short vocal samples, fizzing electronic flashes, raw bass and hot-stepping D&B drums are still formidably floor-friendly.

Various Artists EP
  1. Jem One - "Network" (6:04)
  2. Section - "Dark Phrases" (4:56)
  3. Future - "Daffy's Secret Project" (5:15)
  4. Sicknote, Sweetpea & Dissect - "Jahlocia" (6:08)
Review: This is how you kick off a new decade. Skeleton have been consistent with their brutalist dispatches since re-rising in 2014 and this new V/A levels things up once again. Jem One lights the fire with darkcore grit as layers of distorted breaks and strange alien rave textures twist in and out of the mix. Section follows with nasty rave stabs and a two-step so well chiselled you could trim your whiskers on it before Future flips things for an entirely different vibe on the minimal, subby and loose-limbed "Daffy's Secret Project". Finally Sicknote, Sweetpea and Dissect bring the funk on "Jahlocia". Once again the breaks are the focus but there's more than enough groove in the bassline to put on meat on everyone's table. Bad to the bones!

Nine Strings
Cat: META 76. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Nine Strings (4:47)
  2. Eyes (4:28)
Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

  3. Denham Audio - "Mercury Tint" (4:50)
  4. Mani Festo - "Spiral" (6:34)
Review: Relooping the generations; John Morrow (AKA Skeleton Army AKA 4 Horsemen Of The Apocalypse AKA Foul Play) serves up a collection that nods in both directions. 4 Hero's Marc Clair takes the lead under his old school hardcore alias Manix. Bouncy and loaded with positivity, it sets the scene before Morrow remixes his 23 old Foul Play track "Dark Horse" into a slinky, technoid breakbeat jam. Flip for some future flavours: Denham Audio looks to early Good Looking for inspiration on "Mercury Tint" while Mani Festo goes wild on a percussive dnb finale. Smile or kill trying.

  7. Bodysnatch - "Just 4 U London" (Kuff mix) (5:01)
  8. Q Project - "Champion Sound" (Alliance remix) (6:15)
Review: Deep in the trenches of the acid house revolution, Fabio & Grooverider were experimenting with a darker blend of sonics week in, week out at Rage, one of the UK's formative acid house nights. Detroit and Belgian techno, US house, UK breakbeats, hip-house, Sheffield bleeps were all in the mixing pot as they started to pioneer a sound that would eventually become jungle. Celebrating 30 years since this seminal event, they've curated a series of albums that join the dots between the movement's cornerstones. From Frankie Bones' "Just As Long As I Got You" (from his fabled Bonesbreaks series) to the much darker side of Balearic king Nightmares On Wax in the form of "Aftermath", these are some of the many key records Fabio & Grooverider dug for to create a culture that's just as strong now as it was when it began 30 years ago. One of a four part series, each one is a keeper.

Review: This year marks three decades since the launch of Rage, the weekly London club night that not only made Fabio and Grooverider stars, but also proved hugely influential in the development of hardcore and jungle. To celebrate, the long-serving DJ duo is offering up an epic compilation of Rage favourites split over four double albums. Part One offers a great introduction to the series, flitting between familiar favourites (the throbbing, bass-heavy Dub of Leftfield's "Not Forgotten", Lennie De Ice's hardcore anthem "We Are I.E"), lesser celebrated gems (the dreamy deep house of One Tribe's "Is This All"), proto-jungle classics (Wots My Code's sub-heavy, bleep-sporting "Dubplate", Foul Play's lusciously hazy "Being With You") and genuine rude boy smashers (Noise Factory's "The Future").

Review: When breakbeat hardcore and "darkcore" were slowly morphing into jungle around 1992-93, few artists delivered quite as many revolutionary and mind-mangling cuts as Northampton's Foul Play. For proof, check out this must-have retrospective of their earliest EPs on Hypercolour. From start to finish, it bustles with proto-jungle gems, from the mangled rave stabs and boisterous breaks of "Dubbing You" and the warehouse-ready voodoo of "The Alchemist" (a kind of prototype liquid tune which also pays tribute to Nightmares on Wax's earlier "Aftermath"), to the blistering rhythms and bassbin-bothering sub business of "Screwface" and the early ragga-jungle brilliance of "Ragatere". If you have any interest at all in the development of UK bass music, then you need this in your life.
