Turn The Tape
Turn The Tape (white & green vinyl 12")
Cat: FLXA 190. Rel: 09 May 24
Turn The Tape (4:30)
Way Better (feat Minor Forms) (4:09)
Stay Hungry (4:53)
Front Left (The Sauce remix) (4:31)
Review: Bristolian bangersmith Amoss shares his latest EP 'Turn The Tape' for Flexout Audio, self-describedly shooting for and squarely executing 'that funky sound'. To our ears, this is translates to knocky, well-polished neuro; the titular A-sider takes its namesake from the sample heard throughout - "it ain't over, I just gotta turn the tape over" - getting at that retro suspense of being bound by limitation. The sound here and throughout is atmospheric and back-alleyed, smoke rising from manholes as a gritty, growling anomaly skulks in the dustbin round the corner ('Stay Hungry', 'Way Better'). Closer 'Front Left' reminisces on a sinister existence spent at the system's larboard, where the sound is said to permeate rooms best; this one brings a brittle rollage, shunning histrionics for a neat two-note middle-fingered trance.

Sith (VIP) (5:51)
Lost Science (6:21)
Review: 26 years ago Blame embraced the dark forces of the Sith (a good five years before the Revenge movie) - and it finally got a release in 2021. Now comes the VIP. Even more score-like and dramatic with its energy and intention, this will have you unleashing force destruction before you can even whip out your sabre. 'Lost Science' is another unreleased gem from the same late 90s era. Big jazzy drums, caverns of space and a sense of cosmic jazz that's hard to find in contemporary breakbeat music. The dark force is strong on this one.

Full Circle
Cat: INFRALTDLP 001AB. Rel: 08 May 24
Serenity (6:33)
Hold You (4:33)
Meridian (5:41)
Review: J Majik's full album Full Circle is available as one bumper quadruple vinyl pack but has also been teased apart into bite-sized 12"s. Each one packs a serious punch, such is the drive and energy of the tunes. 'Serenity' is full-throttle drum & bass with blistering low ends and intense drum programming that is softened only slightly by the swirling pads up top. 'Hold You' is a little more paired back - the drums are given more room to do their thing as sustained chords bring a sense of mystery. 'Meridian' closes out with tightly coiled loops that skate across the surface as ambient pads bring a deep space vibe to the trip.

Escape From Lando (feat DJ Sense)
Point Of Return
Review: Stone cold pioneer J Majik reissues three stunning cuts from his Full Circle album that landed five years ago. 'Red Moon' takes the lead. Big splashing Amens and shimmering jazzy pads combine for a timeless assault of the senses that washes like tidal waves around you. The Star Wars referencing 'Escape From Lando' brings another foundation name to the fore as DJ Sense joins the fray for some galaxy chasing mischief while finally 'Point Of Return' brings us to an emotional close with its weeping reverse samples, slurring fills and dreamy introspection. Ageless.

Time X
Total Stranger
Inexplicable
Review: Levitation returns to US jungle imprint PPJ with three more outstanding breakbeat gems. 'Time X' breaks the seal and flips between the shades and styles with a cool sense of rawness and mystery. One moment those drums will slice your face, the next moment those pads are kissing you softly. This emotional dexterity continues as 'Total Stranger' flips from a woozy halftime dreamscape into an all-out slap-about and 'Inexplicable' finishes the EP on full blast with a head-bending array of twists and edits. Pick your feet up!

Burn & Heal (hand-stamped 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ITX 032. Rel: 01 May 24
Worstis (3:58)
Shackout (5:02)
Stomping Ground (5:01)
Burn & Heal (5:01)
Review: The latest on Ilian Tape's ITX Series is this fresh dub haywiring from UK producer Mantra, one half of the UK label and events series Rupture. Following a superbly lo-fi, blue-tinted deep dubstep and garage mix offered to the label less than a year ago, she here returns to the fore with four fantastic new ones tailored for both systems and system heads. Highlights among the bunch include the dizzying, breaksy loss of sonic motor control that is 'Shackout' and the nighttimey, post-dark-garage 4x4 hardcore number 'Stomping Ground'. Closer 'Burn & Heal' rounds the whole thing out on a maximally intense jump-up jungle mastication.

Morning Thunder (7:24)
Nexus (8:16)
Review: You know what they say. After 'Morning Thunder' comes afternoon sunshine, and this is certainly the case with One-Touch. After a run of jazzy, springy keys and hammering breaks comes a powerful ray of euphoric sola heat a la Krome & Time records. Looking for something just a little dark and spacious in its intention? Flip for 'Nexus' and zone the heck out. Excellent weaponry from this mysterious artist. You know what they say - One-Touch, zero-artist information available.

Driver (3:32)
Nothing For Free (3:03)
Louder Than Words (3:55)
Come Alive (3:54)
Review: Aussie drum & bass overlords Pendulum are one of the most successful such bands in the universe. They dropped this new EP in June but the vinyl finally arrives now as a limited edition picture disc and marks the group's biggest collection of new music - the singles have been put out individually over the last year - in a whole decade. Frontman Rob Swire designed the picture on the wax and it animates when played at 45 rpm and filmed on a mobile screen. Musically, it is a big comeback with all of the big drops, hard edge breaks and first synths you would expect of this stadium sized outfit.

Return Of Q Project (remastered) (B-STOCK)

Champion Sound (7:01)
Night Moves (6:34)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

When it comes to UK hardcore/jungle schematics, they don't come much more authoritative than Q Project's 'Champion Sound'. That growing hoover sound and iconic vocal stab and those mercenary breaks... Like Total Science's Q himself, this still tears up dancefloors almost 30 years later. As does the often overlooked B-side 'Night Moves'. Bumping and rolling in the shadow of the anthem on the a-side, this wonderfully minimalistic track highlights the power of that essential stripped back dynamic of breaks and big bulging subs - the only ingredients any good D&B track truly needs.

Extra Redundant (6:54)
Review: It's been a busy year so far for London duo Rezzett as they follow up their second album Meant Like This, and a recent live album, with this wild new EP joyously titled 'Boshly'. And bosh we will... The title track gets super-loopy with a chant and a cat-like twang that licks your brain up and down. Elsewhere 'Dots' gives 1992 a call but reloops the call through a whole wave of textures and beguiling twists while 'Kermit' recalls the early Total Science or Krome and Time records but with woozy rosey glasses. 'Extra Redundant' flips for a more delicate, cosmic farewell. Bish, bash, 'Boshly'.

Silly Girls

Cat: AKO10 017. Rel: 08 May 24
Silly Girls (5:13)
Ur Luv (5:11)
Review: Sweetpea brings a raw edge to a fresh pair of tunes on the AKO Beatz label which has pressed them up to a nice green 10". 'Silly Girls' is a raucous cut that is awash with synths that swirl and blow about the mix and the deeply buried breakbeats keep things moving and smudge vocals drift in and out up top. It's an intense cut that leads into flipside joint 'Ur Luv' which starts with some ambient swirls before again rough riding on a brutalist amen break that is detailed with wispy sci-fi details.
