Neighbourhood (feat El B, Dawn Raid remixes)
Cat: IFGGG 002. Rel: 23 Oct 23
Neighbourhood (original '98 mix)
Neighbourhood (El B remix)
Neighbourhood (Dawn Raid remix)
Review: Long time underground UK stalwart Zed Bias dropped this - one of his many seminal cuts - back in 1999. Now, the dark garage classic 'Neighbourhood' gets reissued alongside some remixes. In its original form, it has an alluring vocal charm with unsettling chords over a grinding bassline and sharp percussion. The El B remix brings fleshier low ends and more swagger and shuffle while the vocals remain in place to blow up your spot. To close out the EP, Dawn Raid remixes with a high-energy jungle sound full of old-school signifiers. A proper EP for proper dance floors.

Everytime (Red Jerry mix) (6:48)
Review: A classic from the mighty Hooj Choons back catalogue, Lustral's 'Everytime' gets a much welcome reissue here, featuring all the mixes from the original version of the release back in 1997. There's Nalin & Kane's sensual and evocative remix which is a true zeitgeist of the progressive house sound in the late '90s - if we've ever heard it. Label co-founder Red Cherry's saucer-eyed and bittersweet sunset breaks makes for an equally memorable remix too, as well as the sunny house vibes of the original mix featured last on the B side.

Review: There is no more iconic figure in the world of drum & bass than Goldie. In fact, he has pretty much transitioned to natural treasure in the years since he operated at the genre's bleeding edge as a DJ, label boss of Metalheadz and producer. His Timeless album, now a hard to believe quarter of a century old, was his big breakthrough and took d&b into new realms. The epic title track will always be the benchmark by which all others are judged by the whole flow the record, precision beat work and lush synth sounds have rarely been bettered.

Icicle - "Dreadnaught" (feat SP MC - Phace remix) (4:38)
Spectrasoul - "Glimpse" (feat DBridge - Ivy Lab remix) (4:42)
Review: Oh gosh! Shogun's special Shuriken vinyl series hits its sixth edition with some of the label's biggest remix bombs of yore. Calyx & Teebee's twist on Spor's game-changing 'Aztec' takes the lead and remains one of the best remixes the Ram duo have ever done. Calibre's take on Alix Perez, Spectrasoul and Peven Everett's 'Forsaken' is up there with the original in terms of its beauty and simplicity. Meanwhile on the B, Phace gives Icicle and SP:MC a total neuro shoeing before we end Ivy Lab's evergreen take on Spectrasoul & dBridge's 'Glimpse', arguably one of the finest cuts Shogun has ever released. Ready for the reload.

Goodbye (5:57)
In The Dark (5:36)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Andrew Ferguson made his debut on 2 Bad Mice's Over/Shadow; his tenure in the game, his authenticity, his lack of compromise and his timelessness as an artist (both as Outrage and his more 140-oriented alias Nomine) is a perfect fit. Here are two examples; 'Goodbye' says hello with oceanic waves of disarming pads, bellowing subs and spacious breaks while 'In The Dark' brings a little more 1990 unity vibes thanks to the sensual vocal and subtle piano charm. Outrageously good.

Glasshouse 5 (7:10)
Review: The fledgling Detach label continues to show it means business with a new 12" in a lovely screen-printed sleeve. Romanian artist Dyl is the one in charge and has been serving up consistently excellent and innovative sounds now for serval years. All of these cuts mix up great sound design with languid rhythms - the first is eerie, with watery droplets and glassy tinkles hanging in the air, while 'Glasshouse 2' has a percolating rhythm down low. 'Glasshouse 3' gets a little more dynamic with a shimmering low end and freaky abstract life forms and 'Glasshouse 4' layers in more intense and ever-shifting synth lines while the closer sounds like it's roaming through a deserted factory long after it shut down.

Gold Dust (VIP vocal mix) (5:17)
Gold Dust (instrumental) (7:48)
Review: It's the anthem that just won't quit. Having celebrated a decade of Gold Dust with a whole stack of remixes earlier this year - even though the tune is actually closer to 12 or 13 years old - the Bad Company founder-turned-popstar DJ Fresh now serves up this special gold vinyl edition for Record Store Day. Complete with the VIP and instrumental (which are still arguably the best versions out there) it's yet another way you can get blasted with one of the most iconic and euphoric hooks in modern drum & bass. You can't get enough of this style.

Perforation (4:11)
Review: Wilkinson's smash hit 'Afterglow' is given a limited repress on a pretty slice of golden marbled wax, harkening back to a time when the drum n' bass artist lay just on the cusp of stardom. The original press of 'Afterglow', arguably one of the most important songs to galvanize drum n' bass as a truly Top-40-worthy style for the 2010s, has long been out of print. However, that never stopped the song from reaching public stardom, in large part thanks to its contributing vocals from Becky Hill and its lesser known jump-up B-side, 'Perforation'.

Review: Eusebeia and Artificial Red: Two artists together across three tracks on one beautiful 12" Samurai off-shoot label Mind Games are spoiling us silly right here. The magic is evident the moment those luxury drums swoop and dip on 'Sweet Memories'. More jazz than jungle, there's a cosmic urgency laced throughout that sets the tone for the whole EP. Elsewhere 'Peace Of Mind' goes full GLM with its dreamy pads and soft subs before 'Cloud Nine' finishes with a tender ravey hug. Music for the Mind Games, soul games and indeed body games.

Review: Astonishingly, a quarter of a century has now passed since The Prodigy released The Fat of the Land, the inspired rock-rave fusion opus that helped rocket the Essex combo towards superstardom and converted a whole generation of spotty indie kids to the joys of rambunctious rave music. It's certainly worthy of this limited-edition anniversary pressing, which comes on eye-catching silver-coloured vinyl. Of course, we all know the smash hits - the bustling, acid-flecked roll of 'Smack My Bitch Up', ultra-heavy 'Firestarter' and funky, low-slung 'Breathe' - but the set's lesser-celebrated moments, such as hip-hop jam 'Diesel Power', Meat Beat Manifesto-esque 'Serial Thrilla' and punky 'Fuel My Fire' have aged equally as well.

Even more score-like and dramatic with its energy and intention, this will have you unleashing force destruction before you can even whip out your sabre. 'Lost Science' is another unreleased gem from the same late 90s era. Big jazzy drums, caverns of space and a sense of cosmic jazz that's hard to find in contemporary breakbeat music. The dark force is strong on this one.

Review: Having scaled the heights of global superstardom over the last decade, Chase & Status last year returned to their more roughneck D&B roots with RTRN II JUNGLE, their retro-futurist fourth studio album. Here they continue that trend via RTRN II FABRIC, their first contribution to the legendary London club's popular DJ mix series. Full to bursting with high-octane Amen breaks, bowel-bothering sub-bass, punchy rhythms and MC flows, the mix sees the long-serving twosome pack 44 killer jungle and D&B cuts old and new into just under 80, all-action minutes. As you'd expect, it's packed with exclusives too - not least a wealth of unreleased Chase & Status productions and 'VIP' dubplate versions. If you love jungle and D&B, you need it in your life.

Review: This translucent purple vinyl looks as good as it sounds thanks to the work of DJ PESHAY, Sync Dynamix and The Advanc3d. They draw on an authentic 90s sound but with plenty of modern production touches to bring it up to date. The drums are well defined and dance about the stern field with warm soul synths and well chosen vocals. Part jungle, art rave, but good vibes - this is a classic EP in the making. Big shout out to the artwork too which is from the one and only Junior Tomlin.

Review: Turbo Breaks by name, Turbo Breaks by nature. Diplomat and Beagle are reunited on this powerful new offering with some new tunes and an update of one of their old classics. 'Temple Of Boom' kicks off with fixing, brain-frying synths over relentless drum precision. It's a naggy track to shake up the floor. The remix of 'Equatorial Bass' is a mix of floating breakdowns and revved-up drum & bass madness.

Review: The legendary Zed Bias is stepping out with a new label I Feel Good Records and intends for it to spread good vibes only through a diverse roster of talent and sounds that span house, bass and beyond. He has more than a quarter of a century of experience in the game and of eyeing new talents and helping them to shine and has always had a collaborative approach to music that will continue to define this label's MO. Zed is minting the label with a new single alongside award-winning d&b MC Inja. 'You Should Dance' pairs his warming tones with infectious garage drums and smeared, soothing chords that radiant heat. The Man Of The Street (feat Mike Tansella Jr) (5:17)

Review: DJ Plant Texture aka Bari's Donato Basile makes a Return to Disorder with four blistering cuts of jungle, electro, techno and acid. He is a versatile producer who takes no prisoners and considers no sounds off-limits. This one kicks off with the brutalist beats and casuistic synths of 'The Other World' before funky, acid-laced techno bouncer 'Preserve The Rave' takes you to the next level. 'The Man Of The Street' (feat Mike Tansella Jr) is then a deeper, more cosmic cut with thinking synths but still plenty of powerful rhythms and last of all are the dark jungle breaks of 'Hasta La Vista, Baby.' These are highly charged and guaranteed dance floor destroyers from this ever-on-point wizard.

While still managing to nod to times past, this limited new LP also works in brand new UK sounds - drill MCs Unknown T and Backroad Gee, for example, make standout appearance on the tracks 'Run Up' and 'When It Rains', while still retaining elements of creativity that are endemic to Chase & Status only. Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

The latest one this week is by the enigmatic Tamoshi. On the A side, we have the snarling minimalist roller called 'The System' which is quite reminiscent of early DJ Krust. Focusing on those tense and spacious jazzy samples that characterised drum & bass in the mid-90s (think Peshay, think Photek), tracks like 'Drama', 'Fortune Green' and 'Off Broadway' hit with that timeless, gritty, burnt soul vibe while cuts like 'This Condition' and KILLSWSH's remix of 'She Moves' flex with more of a contemporary vibe. Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. Musically there is little in common as this new EP shows - it is a hardcore mix of jostling amen breaks designed to be heard loud. 'Surrender' is backed with smeared pads that bring the soul and devastating low end bass, while 'Breezin' is a hyperactive sound that darts about all over the place. Here we find them celebrating the contributions and pure skill of James Stephens' FOI alias with this champion slab from 1994. 'Champion Of Champions' brings a strong sense of triumph before murking you up with the vocal layers and cut-glass edits. Bleeps (5:41)
Wake Up (5:48)
Review: It is the Yellow Machines camp that is behind the Modified Magic label. It started way back in 2015 and is only now up to an eighth release some nine years later, but why rush things? This is another quality outing for fans of straight up, no frills jungle. It is helmed by Champa B who kicks off with 'Bleeps' which is indeed riddled with bleeps from a fax machine in meltdown and is powered by bristling amen breaks with drilling bass down low. 'Wake Up' then rides a bumpy and quick stepping low end with rave stabs, crashing snares and fizzing pads all re-wiring your brain.

Review: Kings of new school drum & bass Chase & Status made another triumphant return with 2 Ruff Viol 1, which is jam packed with fresh new wave jungle anthems for those who like it energetic. The chart topping duo knows a thing or two about crafting big bangers and massive anthems and that's what they do here as they follow up their last album What Came Before with more massive moments. Plenty of guests help them along the way here such as IRah & Flowdan & Trigga & Takura on the massive 'Baddadan' and Avo & Horrid1 on 'On The Block', a collar with Mosey which is also devastatingly large.

Turn Up The Bass
Review: On Evolve, Nick Douwma has gone back to the future, offering up an album that giddily mines the music that inspired him to fall in love with electronic dance music in the first place. So, while it's undoubtedly a radio-friendly, 21st century big-room dance album, the collected tracks include nods to many classic dancefloor anthems (see 'Fine Day', an EDM-d&b re-make of the Opus III classic that also inspired Orbital's 'Halcyon'), crossover acts of old (the Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers), vintage hardcore and jungle, and 90s house. A string of guests and collaborators swing by to help, including ARCO (on recent single 'Vibration (One More Time)', Chicago house stalwart Gene Farris (on the throbbing, festival-friendly 'It's Time'), and hardcore and jungle pioneer Jonny L ('Turn Up The Bass').

DJ Fresh - "Dancing In The Dark" (feat Buunshin) (3:16)
Heavyweight (AMC remix) (4:37)
Review: DJ Fresh is a legend at this point. Whenever he drops new heat it is worth tuning in, especially when it's a 12" picture disc like this from Breakbeat Koas. The A-side is a collab with Buunshin. 'Dancing In the Dark' is a hardcore gem with pitched-up vocals and monstrous breaks over spin backs, raw bass and thrilling synth lacerations. Then comes an AMC Remix of DJ Fresh's 'Heavyweight' that is just that. It rides on silky breakbeats with a rising sense of tension that keeps you locked until the explosive bass and jump-up drum head to the level.

Research (Rural 2016 version) (4:18)
Review: The Nullpunkt label is fast approaching its 25th release but first comes this fearsome outing from F&E. The third installment in the Forschung & Entwicklung series comes on grey vinyl and does not mess about with five more cuts all served up as Antal or Rural versions from 2016. The first rides on rusty jungle breaks, the second, 'Conclusion', is an atmospheric piece with a minimal rhythm and warped synth daubs while 'Six Days' is a dark and heavy piece of ambient techno dystopia. 'Outro' is the lightest and brightest piece of synth work on the EP then 'Research' brings back the jungle techno with more serrated synths and loopy, jagged rhythms.

Information Overload (5:44)
Review: New gen energy with old school frequencies, Digital's protege Tim Clay lets rip with a level-upping dispatch. 'New Beginnings' is a statement in every direction. By far his heaviest hitting drums to date, you can feel the Function force on this one! 'Body Move' takes more of drum & bass approach with its strident piano stroke and sensual vocal - think Total Science or early Headz. Finally 'Information Overload' is a right old grizzly 95-era Bristol groaner. Rude in sonic and health. Big moves from Monsieur Clay.

Review: Vemodalen means 'The fear that everything has already been done.' If that's not an enticing enough invitation to dBridge's album then we don't know what is. The music as relatable, too. Powerful, slow, sexy and vulnerable, it paints from a synthetic palette anyone over 30 has grown up with and will know intuitively from music and movies. Ranging from poppy motifs that are reminiscent perhaps of Roxy Music or Visage to more introverted electronica that nods at the Rephlex sound and perhaps Si Begg, all backed up by his history as Heartdrive and the Autonomic sound, this is dBridge looking back to look forward. Stunning.

Twos On A Pack Of Ten (4:35)
Review: Oh gosh! Since Ulterior Motive disbanded, Settle Down has gone from ravey strength to ravey strength. Lowering the tempo just a smidgeon, he's found himself painting from a vibrant palette that isn't governed by the tight rules of drum & bass, aligning himself more with the Biceps and Special Requests of the world and the sounds really shine as a result. Both of these have been on dub for some time, 'The Special' nods sweetly at Sade before burying its head in the biggest bass scoop it can find while the brilliantly titled 'Twos On A Pack Of 10' dives into dreamier breakbeat pastures - before breaking into a serious venomous bassline. Get down!

Review: Fokuz Recordings has been one of the leading drum & bass labels in the Netherlands for some time. Now well into triple figures when it comes to catalogue numbers, the label is still turning out interesting sounds as evidenced by this new purple-marbled 12" from Spearhead bossman BCEE. There is a beauty in the way ever so delicate one-finger piano notes are draped over the relentless bass of opener 'Alpha' that soon wins you over. 'Dogs Behaving Badly' is deeper, more soulful, more tender and insular and then 'Days Like These' is a fluid roller with well-treated string sounds before 'Overleaf' layers dub vibes with jump-up drum goodness.

Review: What happens if you take a big vocal sample and drop it over a rinsing, old school jungle break beat? The first tune here, 'Opus III', that's what. It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Flip it over and you'll find something just as divisive - another clattering jungle tune filled with kinetic kicks and flurries of snare, and once more a well-known vocal from Whamdo Project's 'Kings Of The Castle.'

Complementing his rapid fire chats with equally thundering amens, it's got reload written into every red groove. Flip for more smoky sonic sermons as they take on another spark-up standard "Herbalist" with such authenticity you could easily be convinced it's 1992 again... Especially if you've practiced the lyrical content so much you think time travel is a thing. Pure Vibez.

Review: London classicalists Silent Force continue to champion timeless freshness with this beautiful four tracker from New Zealand-based breakbeat doyen DJ Koncept. Often known for his turntablism and more hip-hop inclined manoeuvres, here Koncept goes for that classic GLM style sound with a touch of early Creative Source in the mix. Highlights include the lush linger pianos and familiar breathy sample on 'Over The Wall' and the infinite starry sky feels of the EP open 'Deep Mind'. Unhurried, classy and well produced. As you'd expect from the Footnotes bossman, the vibe is subtle, laid back and jazz to the very core. Review: Still riding high off the success of their album with Charlotte Haining back in May, BCEE now come back strong with a powerful EP on Dutch label Fokuz Recordings. It's 'Crystal' that opens in thoughtful fashion with bold bass notes and a crisp breakbeat that meanders as you get lost in a day dream. There's a more raw energy to 'Poodle Dub', while playful horns bring some colour. You head will be amongst the clouds as the lush chords of 'Love Drunk' are draped over a rolling break and airy vocals soar up top. 'Stitched Up' closes out with more crisp beats, and this time tumbling melodies that fall like rain.

Review: The North Quarter locks in another superbly stylish EP of functional but characterful drum & bass rhythms here. This one comes from LIN000 and features bunch of self titled tracks. The first is a supper, with fluid bass and low end oscillations. The second is more roomy and cancerous. It operates in an underwater world of bendy bass and crisp hits, then the flip side opens with a more raw, textural and fixing mix of synths and clacking hits before the closer pairs a high speed breakbeat with synths that twist and turn at their own speed.

This is an authentic and turbocharged offering that drops in the middle of a sweaty, strobe lit dance floor as the dopamine floods your brain. Following the heavyweight 'Dreadnox' on 'AKOizm Vol 4' last year, each of these tracks reveals a different side to this brutalist quack; 'Sound Lord' is pure 3am slammage, all bulldozer breaks and such, 'Eden's Rise' is a breezy pad-heavy goosebump bonanza while the title track 'The Artistic Truth' flips things with much more of a jazzy, abstract twist. Review: Breakbeat OG James Isaacs lets rip into the new year with four almighty rave work-outs on the aptly titled EP 'An Onslaught Of Retro Future Synthesizer'. And if you think that's a mouthful, wait until you chow down on the beats. 'Annihilating' is a deep bath in crash cymbals and Antarctic pads, 'Intolerable Putrid Pestilence Horror' is all about the tension with very little release while 'Welcome To The Jungle' takes Axl and co and shoves them in a furnace for a slow and juicy roast. Finally 'Firebird' is a modern breaks take on the jungle hardcore era with a slower tempo and a heavily swung rhythm. One man's Junk is another man's treasure.

Review: The last time we heard from Hospital Records veteran Matt Gresham AKA Logistics, the Coronavirus pandemic was only in its infancy. The release of Love Letters, his first EP for over two years, is therefore a welcome development. It's packed to the rafters with warming, colourful and melodious drum & bass in his long-established trademark style, with sparkling and dreamy opener 'Love Letters', the slightly more percussive 'Yoga' and the picturesque, laid-back two-step beauty of 'Continuation' all moving the heart as much as the head. Arguably best of all, though, are the twinkling 'Secret Satellite', featuring fine vocals from Zoe Philips, and the head-nodding dancefloor soul of Frank Carter III hook-up 'Nightingale'.
