Review: MC Fats and Cleveland Watkiss on one record? Now Break is just showing off! Bonafide soul badness, everything about this record is bliss as both the iconic vocalists harmonise with total messages of unity. "We Are The People" is almost gospel in its intentions while "Midnite Classic" takes us a little deeper into the night with more of Break's classic roughhouse funk foundation. Fresh from soundtracking many of Sun & Bass's parties this year, this is now yours forever. Give it to the people!

  4. Weed Addict (5:07)
Review: It's been a long time between drinks for long-serving D&B producer Marcus Sills, who last appeared under the Channel 2 moniker back in 2015. Happily, the passing of time has not blunted his production skills. For proof, check the barnstorming ragga-jungle revivalism of thrilling opener "Boneman Connection" and similarly minded "Ragga Ragga". Elsewhere, he reaches for the guttural ragga vocals once more on the guitar-laden, hot-stepping, sub-heavy roll of "Weed Addict" and doffs a cap to the pioneers and deep drum and bass on the warm, evocative and dubwise "Wait", which includes cheeky samples from one of the best-loved reggae records of all time.

  2. Sideways (4:01)
  3. Rumours & Revelations (4:59)
  4. Ganymedes (5:33)
Review: Coco shunts it once again: the man like Bryce has been on a serious mission this year with a whole slew of steppers across the likes of 7th Storey and his own Myor Massiv. Here he steps over to Huddersfield-based Supercharger project Hypercharger with four crucial constructs. "Kawaii" lives up to its name with its cute hook and restrained sense of funk, "Sideways" makes up for this by smelting some of the nuttiest dynamics on the EP into a rampant brock-out while deeper again we hit the almost Good Lookingesque cascades and harmonies of "Rumours & Revelations". Finally "Ganymede" shoots us beyond the moons of Jupiter with a spaced-out staccato synth texture, roomy cut-up drums and an overall feeling that this might be a one way ticket. Safe travels!

Water Bucket EP

  1. Rejection (remix) (6:28)
  2. Water Bucket (drum & bass remix) (7:09)
  3. Water Bucket (original mix) (5:46)
Review: Soundsystem professor Digital maintains his spotless flow this year with another dynamite 12" on his own Function imprint. "Rejection" should be known to all - a powerful roller that's soundtracked many a Rupture gets a drum rework and added energy from the man himself before we drop into two versions of "Water Bucket". The original is a 140 vibe with classic dub waves and ripples, lush horns, toxic subs and a militant stomp while the drum & bass remix ups the energy with some turbine amens and a drone bass that squeezes your inner ears with insistency. Classic Digital.

  3. Shadow Moses - "Phreeks" (3:52)
  4. CDN - "Bonus Beat" (3:23)
Review: New Berlin beat-fusers FreiTanzPlatten levels up with another four-track fresh-talent package. Melting down the spirit of jungle, ghetto-tech and footwork with a strong dollop of b-boy, the whole package could just as well sit in a techno set as it could a drum & bass set. Leipzig's DJ DR-660 sparks up with a pace Godfather vibe, all Detroit and no graces. Thinh's "Yellow Balm" rolls with more of a jazzy rolling jungle haze while Shadow Moses's "Phreeks" goes turbo electro. Finally CDN wraps up with a fizzy, low-swung acid jam that wriggles with wily abandon. FTP smash it again.

Review: Dona's Plant Texture lays down more fresh produce in the form of the left-sided Italian beat selection. Dona takes the A-side with three versions; his RaveONine blend is a warped, woozy joint that tips a subversive nod towards to the trippier side of Detroit, his jungle mix lives up to its name with some classic breakwork while the Slow08 version takes us right into the middle of a gluey dancefloor, all slo-mo and sedative. Flip for three twists from fellow Italian Simoncinco; a wriggling acid groove, a thundering bleep-style dub and some rolling 909 drums for add creative mix pleasure. What a package. Ready for takeoff?

Review: Dolenz has found his spiritual home at Exit. A breeding ground for boundary-free beat creativity, his far-out fusions are in good company in dBridge's house. This label debut is no exception as we're treated to his broadest palette; the trapped bumps and cuts of "Evesdrop", the eastern string glaze and dense harmonies and chimes of "Geminus" and the sub-soaked swagger and planet-gazing dubbed out halftime of "Some Drum" all comprise and compound to make a serious statement of intent. We have no doubt the London artist will be back on Exit very soon.

  2. Dom & Roland - "Tears In Rain" (6:54)
Review: Two more stone cold artefacts from the golden era vaults: Dom & Roland continues to unearth more treasures in the form of "Phoenix" and "Tears In The Rain". The former is a Tech Itch co-lab from the mid 90s that charges with rusty drum edits and a drop into a stripped back sub groove and twisted shades of acid while the latter looks back to his "Mechanics" chapter with a rampant, heavily layered heads-down roll, spooked-out overtones and a classic Bladerunner sample. Just like the vinyls themselves, these are foundation-era gold.

Review: Question: Has Stretch's AKO Beatz delivered a bad tune yet? Answer: No. Pure jungle with the perfect balance of roots and future, they're inherently true to the craft... As is long-term Rupture G Double O, a man who has breaks running through his veins. First up is a Good Looking or perhaps Hidden Agenda style drifter "Dreaming", "Cutlass Style" is straight out of 92 with its razor edits and turbine textures echoing in and out of the mix. Thirdly is a Da Intalex style kaleidoscope of 6am jungle trippiness. Fourthly is a rewind and play again. KO material.

  2. Champa B - "The Cloak" (5:51)
  3. Drum Cypha - "See Through" (5:17)
Review: Cypha and Champa unleash the second Holotype vinyl special and it's a balls-to-the-wall situation. First up comes longstanding south coast junglist Dub One with newcomer Blatant and they're packing a detuned synth riff that could melt concrete 1992 style. Champa B follows with "The Cloak", a dark, warped-out roller with some really interesting processing and textures on drums and a mentasm that comes out of nowhere and seeps into your brain indelibly. Finally Drum Cyphya provides a dramatic finale piece with more hardcore synth tones, incredible drum energy and an arresting vocal that can, and will, see right through you down to the darkest corners of your soul. Gulliness.

  4. Kovacs (4:57)
Review: After flitting between labels for the best part of four years, Ed:It (AKA producer Ed Warener) finally found a settled home on Shogun Audio. The Junction EP is his third 12" for DJ Friction's label and contains four more slabs of D&B dancefloor dynamite. As you'd expect given his history, the EP contains a couple of fluid, soul-flecked bombs, with the sweet Lady Soul collaboration "Wander Away" - think seductive vocals and heavy bottom end - just edging out spacey, rolling opener "The Junction" in the "best track" stakes. Elsewhere, both "Nevermind" and "Kovacs" are darker and more tech-tinged in tone, with Warener concentrating on the punchiness of his beats and the weightiness of the bass.

  3. In The Jungle (Meeting With Richard David James) (7:55)
Review: Transatlantic's second salvo comes from debutant Europa, a producer who's not ashamed to showcase his (or her) many influences. Opener "Facegrinder I", for example, boasts ghetto-tech style pitched-up beats (and vocal samples), glacial synthesizer melodies reminiscent of Kraftwerk's Trance Europe Express album, and the kind of ragged, mind-bending acid lines that were once the preserve of Rephlex Records' battery of brain-dance nutters. The braindance influence comes through even louder on the pleasingly skewed "Facegrinder II", whose mentalist beats are this time accompanied by choral vocal samples and sweeping strings. Finally, he pays tribute to everyone's favourite analogue loon, Aphex Twin, on the brilliant (and bonkers) "In The Jungle (Meeting With Richard David James)".

  1. Persistence Of Memory 1 (7:22)
  2. Persistence Of Memory 2 (7:52)
  3. Persistence Of Memory 3 (6:31)
Review: Mysterious UK producer returns with more grey area perspectives, courtesy of Felix K's label. These three tracks lurk in the grey area: the space between techno and drum and bass. On the A side, the first version of "Persistence Of Memory" is a textured dub techno experiment, redolent of classic Basic Channel by way of Italian hypnotic techno sensibilities. A raw, brazenly analogue and bass heavy thumper represents the second rendition, much in the vein of Clone Basement Series or Livity Sound: keeping in mind that he appeared on the latter with his previous EP Jinx/Scanners earlier in 2017. The roaring B side cut shows a side of the producer not seen since his Jungle Crack EP last year. This is a pure techstep: late '90s style and calls to mind the early work of Trace or Ed Rush & Optical where this producer possibly returns to their roots.

Review: Got any soundclashes coming up? If the answer is no, you best organise some because these are prime clash bashers: guaranteed to slew the opposition with 1994 authenticity and 2017 clarity. All untitled and heavily laced with some of the classic vocals and samples of the time, "Track 1" is the badman homage, "Track 2" dips into funky light-footed skank while "Track 3" rolls out on more of a loopy ragga-fronted vibe before switching into some iconic vocals. You can't so no to this.

Review: He's called martianMan because he genuinely sounds like he's from outer space. But his name could just as easily be typo and actually be MachineMan because he's firing out relentless workouts this year and they've all been precision blinders. His fifth EP this year, this one is no exception as we're iced out by heavy pressure pads on "Focus", we're thrown off guard by some meticulous drum work on "The Wild" and "Box Out" while "Flow Bit" wraps up on more of 98-style jazz drum flare with just a mild whiff of Photek in the flowing, molten bass melody that does its own thing on its own terms. Top shelf jungle business.

Review: Having collaborated and set-up a label with Shogun bossman Friction under his Fine Art alias, it was only a matter of time before Bristol duo My Nu Leng flipped the favour and slapped down a little drum & bass in return. Their debut 170 cuts, "Portal", "Jigsaw" and "The Terrace" all smack with the type of muscle you'd hope - big riffs, gritty bass and a sense of drama that fits the current tech/jungle/halftime melting pot the genre is enjoying right now. For added measure they've also thrown in a unique groaning 130 wobbler that belongs in no other category but 'sick m8'. Powerful.

Here are four of the many highlights; Serum's outrageous rolling VIP of his and Navi's instant sing-along "Sound The Alarm", the sparkling sun-kissed twist on "Jah Promise", the premium mid 90s Playaz style gulliness of "Heavy Like Tank" and Ray Keith-dented heavily warped take on "Soundwar". Four fire fixtures; no one does it like Navigator.

Review: Hot on the heels of Monty's EP comes another barbed and bulging EP from 1985 bossman Perez. Tapping into his darker, heavier machine funk tendencies, this is Alix in 3am drum & bass dance mode: "Lucky Charm" is a purring subby low-rider, "Blips" is straight back to 2009 with its angular two-step, sinewy sound design and badman bass and "Nighthawks" is a dark soul roller with subtle samplecraft and pranged out basses. "Missing Pieces" brings us back down to earth safe and sound with a much dreamier atmosphere wrapped lavishly around Perez's light-footed beats and Javeon's distinctive soulful tones. 1985 out of 10.

Review: Back in 1996, Rupert Parkes had yet to establish himself as one of drum and bass's most musically talented producers. It would be fair to say that "T'Raenon", his sole EP for Kirk Degiorgio's Operation Applied Rhythmic Technology (Op-ART) label, remains one of the standout releases of his early period. Here presented in lusciously re-mastered form, the title track remains a deliciously dreamy, melodious and atmospheric trip into deep drum & bass territory with distinctive nods to mid '90s intelligent techno. Those influences are explored further on the flipside "Version" of the title track, as well as the slow-burning IDM delight that is closer "Kenei".

Review: Here's a blast from the past: an un-credited "mystery" 12" single featuring stunning bootleg remixes of a simmering R&B/soul jam. The "Vocal Mix", featuring slightly pitched down, echo-laden excerpts from said modern soul classic, is particularly alluring. The vocal brilliantly winds its way in an out of a punchy, jungle-influenced rhythm track, gut-wrenching sub-bass palpitations and just the right amount of illicit, urban noise. The quality of the mystery producer's work shines brightly on the accompanying Dub Mix, which naturally keeps the vocals to a minimum and adds extra percussive pressure. Impressive stuff, all told.
