Angry Fist
Angry Fist (splattered vinyl 10" + insert)
Cat: SKELR 20. Rel: 21 Apr 21
  1. Angry Fist (5:37)
  2. The Caution (7:10)
Review: DJ Monita's Skeleton Recordings presents this ferocious double header. On the first side, London based Tristan May aka Antidote's brutal drum and bass rager 'Angry Fist' takes influence from the more extreme sounds of the scene pioneered at the turn of the millennium by Dilinja or Loxy & Ink. More heavy artillery awaits on the flip, with the darkside roller 'The Caution' by veteran producer Threshold (Dub Clinique/Str8 From The Bedroom) with its eerie and subdued moments throughout adding to its overall tension and suspense - reminiscent of classic Optical or Johnny L. Definitely one for the heads!

  2. Binary Digit - "Ob_Break" (4:07)
  3. Victor Ziegler - "Dashington WC" (4:06)
  4. Victor Ziegler - "Nostalgic Aerobic" (5:24)
Review: Grenoble's Binary Digit (Dream Ticket/Opal Tapes) appears on a split EP here with Belgian debutant Victor Ziegler, to inaugurate new imprint Postal Code Records on From Berriat To Pitteurs (PCR001). On the A side, Binary Digit is in fine form on the wacky acid-jungle hybrid of '4020 Pitteurs FM' followed by the lo-fi chiptune electro of 'Ob_Break'. On the flip, Ziegler takes the rolling breakbeats of the '90s UK underground and merges them with the aesthetic of dreamy electronica of the time - namely on Warp or Rephlex - with the glassy-eyed and bittersweet epic 'Nostalgic Aerobic' which was easily the standout tune on this stellar EP. Keep your eye on Postal Code Records in 2021.

Keepin' It Raw
Cat: SYMM 034. Rel: 16 Apr 21
  1. Keepin' It Raw (Calyx & Teebee remix) (4:03)
  2. Conversations (feat MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss - Breakage remix) (3:45)
Review: Break's 2018 stepper 'Keep in It Raw' gets some special remix treatment here to close down the series. Calyx & Teebee step up first and layer in plenty of menace, with saw tooth synths bringing the sort of textures that are befitting of the tune's name. The crispy, stepping drum breaks are ever on the move and soulful hints come from the buried vocals. ON the flip, Breakage steps up with his take on 'Conversations' feat MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss. It's a tune laced with fizzing static electricity, dub wise vocals and fantastic fills. Turn it up loud.

  1. Absolute (4:13)
  2. Look Man (5:03)
  3. Jhoole (4:09)
Review: The burgeoning Booyaka series is back with a second sizzling instalment, this time from Bukkha and Nuphlo. They waste no time in getting down to business with 'Absolute' pairing brilliant drum programming with ruching bass and what sounds like the patter of tabala drums. It's moody but deep and inviting, then 'Look Man' bashes you over the head with old school jungle breaks sounding crisp as you like while the bass swings low. 'Jhoole' close sin liquid fashion with soulful leads and the sort of heartfelt piano keys that make you feel good.

  2. Conspire - "Late Night" (6:04)
  3. Soul Connection - "Dub Music" (6:05)
  4. Soul Connection - "Keep Me High" (6:08)
Review: Emerging US label Rhythm Syndicate collide into our lives with this exemplary quartet from two well-established rising talents. UK's Conspire take the A-side with two dark liquid gems. 'Deep Beat' nods its hat to Goodlooking with its bulging subs and jazzy flourishes while 'Late Night' maintains the emotions but adds more amen tension. Flip for the similarly barbed sounds from Serbia's Soul Connection. 'Dub Music' brings a meditative edge with its humming low end and dub influences while 'Keep Me High' brings the EP to a majestic, cosmic close. Precision timed for the sunnier months, Rhythm Syndicate have all the right ducks in a row here.

Cat: RNO 028. Rel: 24 Mar 21
  1. Betchu (7:22)
  2. Trauma Bond (7:24)
Review: Constrict delivers a fresh 12' showcasing his keen ear for various styles and sounds for Ronin Ordinance. Already racking up releases on labels such as Dispatch, Med School, Different Music and his own imprint Incidental Sonics, this producer has a very bright journey ahead. On RNO028's A-side we have 'Betcha', a serving of ultra soulful and intelligent drum & bass. An epic in the vein of the classic Good Looking Records sound, where a gorgeous pitched-up vocal is supported by fiercely intricate rhythms and dreamy atmospherics. On the flip, we have some properly deep meditative vibes on the half-time grey area experiment of 'Trauma Bond',which will appeal to fans of the Autonomic sound of the last decade.

  3. Matter (3:26)
  4. Fission (3:18)
Review: The third and final part of Data 3's album series has landed! Four more futuristic fusions from the Flexout trio, 'Atomic' sets the scene with its rampant synth bass oozing in and out of the beats. It's back by three more space aged weapons: 'Fission' is all about the drama with its detuned stabs and DSCi4 style storytelling, 'Matter' looks more towards the Metalheadz sound for inspiration while 'Saturn Ditch' closes on a deep and dreamy one. Watch out for the other two parts, also on coloured vinyl: 'Cellular' and 'Molecular'.

  1. Myth & Fire (7:47)

Review: Power up! Dead Man's Chest returns with two more jet-powered hardcore head trips. 'Myth & Fire' is straight up 1993 material with its reggae samples rubbing sweaty shoulders with rifle-like rave stabs while breaks rattle and slam relentlessly beneath. 'The People' is a darker, 3am affair with a hornet-like bassline, some incredible drum breaks and a dizzying range of samples weaving in and out over the top. Firing.

  2. Valve Sound VIP (4:28)
Review: Considering the label's roster, clout and history, V Recordings don't throw the word 'legend' around unless they mean it. And boy do they mean it for this 003; two unreleased corkers from Karl Francis here covering two different chapters of his sound. On the A we have 'Selassie I Sound' capturing his 94/95 era with badass Amen choppage and that rich soundsystem treacle vibe to the bass. On the B we have the late 90s Dillinja with a much more chiselled steppy beat as he flips the Cybotron classic into VIP mode. Neither track has been released before. All aboard!

Review: Enigmatic Canadian producer Dodz last appeared in 2008 on a split EP with Finnish producer Fanu. On what is the second release for DJ Stretch's AKO Beatz this week, 'Watercolors' is jazzy and ethereal drum & bass on the more intelligent side of the spectrum. Unlike most other explorations in the genre thus, far this one really stands on its own - soothing, soulful and emotive. On the flip, we have the pitched down Amens of 'Simple', slowing down the aggression of those frantic drums into a mesmerising sense of freefall.

  1. Mai
  2. Dusty Bones
  3. Sanza High
  4. Tao
Review: Italian producer Donato Dozy rightly has a cult following as he has a fantastically well sculpted style whether making ambient deep techno or as is the case here, drum & bass. He opens up with the pulsing loops of 'Mai', which always hints as some sort of big rhythmic explosion that never quite comes. 'Dusty Bones' is a flurry of sci-fi sounds, tribal drums and frosted bass that leaves you in a spin. 'Sanza High' is a DJ Python style half stepper with menacing bass and 'Tao' is a more traditional drum & bass beat with trademark silky synths.

Review: Following their 'Regeneration' EPs, new wax-only foundation-focused imprint Hardcore Vinylists present Logical Regression, an all-out exploration of the fundamental breakbeat sciences. E Hill and Mathieson go for the full on Helter Skelter feels with their stunning rave breakdown, DJ Style 90.6 digs deep into a more hardcore sound with a slower tempo and big velvet pads before 2Deep adds a little Krome & Time-style spaciness and soul into the mix with 'Metamorphosis' before DJ Progress closes on the dreamiest cut of the bunch - 'Can You Reach?'. Close your eyes and it could still be 1993.

Review: 7th Storey alumni Fushara lands on Silent Force for the first time with four startlingly cosmic early jungle flavoured jams. 'Warped Reality' sets the tone with its lavish intro before body-slamming us into a full Amen assault. Similarly stark Goodlooking-esque fusions follow; 'Illusion' hits with an eastern twinge, 'Abstract Tribalism' weaves and bobs with a super spacey Justice style airiness while 'Twilight Zone' gives us the big star-gazing finale we all deserve right now. Fushara? For sure yeah.

Review: Well Street continues to set out its stall within the realm of contemporary bassweight experimentation with this return to the fray from Ghost Warrior. Previously spotted on 31 Records, re:st and The Collection Artaud, Peter Ivanyi is the quintessential grey area producer, dealing in futuristic extrapolations of the D&B formula, where monochrome textures and dense dub atmospheres hover around needlepoint rhythms and ruthlessly controlled bass swells. With an icy demeanour offset by delicately deployed chords (at least on 'Kepler438', this is exquisitely executed, highly futuristic brain food for those who believe in D&B as much more than a raging soundtrack to a skank.

Review: Timeless is Goldie's most iconic and enduring album. In 2021, it is now an unreliable 25 years old. As well as it getting its own standalone reissue, the most famous single from it also gets a re-release alongside some big remixes from key contemporary players. The 2020 Remaster kicks off and immediately sends shivers down your spine. Binary State then go for a dark, twisted, deep version, DBridge's Sonic Nostalgia mix is a real stepper with a menacing bassline and he closing cut is a lush and lounge-y [Re:Jazz] that is pure perfection.

Review: Time Tunnel launched last August with a killer EP that sold out in double quick time. The second issue is another various artist affair featuring the same four talents, all on fine form. Gridzone immediately nails you to the floor with his hardcore breaks before 'Choked Beats' maintains the same energy but in a more dreamy, pad laced environment. NewKiller's 'The Dark' heads off into a dark future rave where high speed drums melt your mind, and last of all Gold Soundz closes down with the ragga-tinged rudeness of his stepper, 'L/C/A.'

Review: Deep bleep visionaries NAFF send out more woozy transmission from their Montreal HQ. This time in the form of Healion, a so-far-anonymous new addition to the label's experimental fold. Across four originals they paint a watercolour like scape of textures, often touching on early jungle as the framework; the Tony Justice meets Seba style acid bubbles and wafting pads of 'About Breathing', the halftime dub waves of 'Vetiver', the Boards Of Canada flavoured ripples of 'I'll See It When I Believe It' and the skittering Kid Drama / autonomic bubbles of 'Gathering'. Complete with a remix from Ludwig AF, it's another essential broadcast from the NAFF crew.

Review: OG vibesmith Justin Richardson (also known as Genotype) dusts off his first and foremost aliases for this bone-rattling two-tracker on Meditator Music. Just Jungle - a perfectly fitting name for these two unrelenting amen assaults. 'Ere Dread' is a dub steam roller. Clattering breaks, oozing subs and reverbed textures giving it the power and grace similar to that of Breakage or Digital. 'Ah This Feeling' digs a bit further back into the rave references with dreamy reverse chords and classic vocals before dropping into a rudeboy groove that could have easily come out of the SOUR studios in the mid 90s. Foundational sounds.

The mighty duo presents a soulful and life-affirming expression in intelligent jungle on the A side cut 'Fly Away' which is quite reminiscent of a certain classic by legend Goldie - it's your guess which one. Review: After its recent appearance on Hospital Records' 25th anniversary compilation, Makoto's superb D&B cover of Al Hudson & The Soul Partners' 1978 disco classic, 'Spread Love', has been released as a single. It's well worth picking up, specifically for the A-side 'Full Length Mix', which ekes out the life-affirming, mood enhancing pleasure by another minute or so. It's a terrific version - as is the original mix, which you can find on the flip - and features British soul man Pete Simpson, backed by a big group of backing singers, belting out the loved-up lyrics atop swooping disco strings, warm synth sounds, booming bass and skittish D&B beats. Bonus cut 'Contact' is worth a listen to, featuring as it does floaty ambient intros, aggressive post-jungle beats, wavy vocal samples and some seriously bowel-bothering sub-bass.

Review: From such sweet intros come such gully drops; J.Robinson buckles up in his Meditator armour for a precision rough/smooth jungle jam 'I Wanna Know'. Comparable to Dextrous or Remarc circa 93, the balance of light, sensual vocals and tearing, assault rifle amens is executed perfectly as we're shocked and brocked from pillar to post. Flip for a brilliant twist as amens are replaced by a dubwise halftime and the vocal turns into a full lullaby. Sweet dreams.

Review: One of Hospital's jazziest, understated musicians, Mitekiss returns to the label with another smoky late night session. This time we cruise around his native south London with 'Night Bus Stories', a sedate deep D&B soundtrack featuring the likes of Milo Merah, RSWT and Javeon. Highlights range from the soft focus jazzy flurries and soulful sermons of 'City Angels' to the much heavier and intense breakbeats of 'N68', which allows a rare peek into Mitekiss's much darker, heavier sound. Stunning.
