The Bell (reissue)
Cat: KBN 07. Rel: 10 May 22
  1. The Bell (6:46)
  2. Tonight (7:12)
Review: It's been a while since we liaised with the Kniteforce camp, but since a new generation of music lovers has reignited interest in the hardier and ravier edges of UK hardcore and drum n' bass, we're stonked to welcome A-Sides and Nut-E-1 back to the fold; two producers at the pinnacle of this classic label's continuous roster of star artists. Freshly riding the hype of drum-drilling heater 'Underwater Fireworks', Nut-E-1 brings amplified heat on new track 'Tonight', blending Peshay-style, minimal, sciencey breakbeats with a chopped-out djembe slap and 808 pulse. A-Sides rightly holds up the A-side, bringing a synth arp to dreamy elysium via sloshing, chrome breakbeats, in what might truly be a wisecracking head-nod to Bukem's Atlantis.

Euphoric State
Cat: MONKY 001. Rel: 27 Apr 22
  1. Euphoric State (4:44)
  2. Euphoric State (Stu Chapman remix) (5:45)
  3. Euphoric State (Stones Taro remix) (4:50)
  4. Euphoric State (DubbalifE remix) (5:27)
Review: Dutch longtimer Afterlife lays down a subliminal cut right here with 'Euphoric State'. Bringing those iconic 'Le Voie Le Soleil' pianos into the 2020s with timeless rave abandon, it's a great update on one of the most uplifting tracks to ever come out of the original early 90s primordial rave phenomenon. Remixes galore courtesy of Stu Chapman (big time stretches and oozing subs) Stones Taro (slower, house-influenced) and DubbalifE (sassy two-steps) Vibes for miles.

Lost Summer
Cat: WRX 27. Rel: 12 Apr 22
  1. Shred (5:04)
  2. Flex Metallic (3:32)
  3. Lost Summer (4:36)
  4. Return 2 (7:23)
  5. Second Hit (6:47)
Review: Following hearty banger dispatches from the likes of Soul Mass Transit System, J Shadow and a whole stack of smashers from Zomby comes this feisty five tracker from the mysterious All Trades. Full-flavoured and broad in its tempo range, it's a first class breakbeat trip that flips from the stark futurist jungle of 'Flex Metallic' to the slower hardcore techno of the title track 'Lost Summer' to the abrasive electro-influenced fracturisms of 'Return 2'. All this and plenty more; there's more than enough room in this warehouse for all of us to party.

Confluence Of Light
Confluence Of Light (marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: SPTL 002. Rel: 06 May 22
  1. Sunless Sky (6:49)
  2. Cosmic Energy (8:10)
  3. Stargate (7:31)
  4. Prophecy (7:24)
Review: Jungle of this calibre is becoming an increasing rarity nowadays, but perhaps that sense of scarcity is exactly what makes this new EP from ASC, 'Confluence Of Light', exciting. Like the cold precision of the breaks and Reeses that make this one up, it's pure economics. From the very beginning of opener 'Sunless Sky', jungle riffage is effortlessly embedded in nighttime bass, while Cetacean sound effects echo and twirl about the midrange. The abyssal sonic trend continues through nightcalls 'Cosmic Energy', 'Stargate' and 'Prophecy'. Likening drum n' bass to the cosmos, as it should be, this is a monumentally spaced-out release.

Cool Down The Dance
Cat: ZIQ 437. Rel: 20 May 22
  1. Cool Down The Dance (4:42)
  2. Horse Mout' (4:15)
  3. Cool Down The Dance (Loxy remix) (6:51)
  4. Satta (4:51)
Review: This four track EP is a return to Anthony Hart's pirate radio roots in the 90s, with clean amen breaks, contemporary use of well-known jungle vocal samples and a remix from 'The Grim Reaper' Loxy. Those who got into DnB and Jungle in the 90s through Eruption and Underground FM will feel at ease in BR's breakbeats, the single 'Horse Mout' being a pure slice of break heaven with its dub patterns and breakneck BPM. This EP marks the North London legend's final release under Planet Mu, and what better way to usher in the next phase but with a call-back to why Basic Rhythm is such a staple in the scene. For those not brushed up on their Drum n Bass history, get started here.

Moonstruck (pink marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: FOKUZ 115RP1. Rel: 20 May 22
  1. Moonstruck (5:35)
  2. Crash (4:53)
Review: Bcee & Bladerunner provide a new futuristic drum n' bass offering to Fokuz Recordings' catalog. 'Moonstruck' and 'Crash' are peaceful, underwater liquid spaces, but they still don't come without air bubbles of electrified reesey disturbance, leaving us gasping for air. The A track is both stringy and wobbly, while the B brings up the rear with searing 808 pulses and filmic celli and piano.

Blame You
Blame You (12")
Cat: TRIII 002. Rel: 30 Mar 22
  1. Blame You (5:39)
  2. Aardvark (4:55)
Review: The story of Triii continues as Break and Total Science continue to ramp up their new co-lab imprint with two more powerful link-ups. 'Blame You' is all about those warm dubby vibes. Soul stirring vocals and a big old sausage of a bassline; like all of their collaborations, you can hear both acts' sounds so clearly in this. 'Aardvark' follows with even more oomph and ooh-la-la. Big on the ravey vocal sample and even bigger on the turbine bass drone; this one is going to enjoy a lot of heavy rotations over festival season. Wowzers.

  1. Fashion (4:18)
  2. Sun (5:43)
  3. Tayga (3:19)
  4. Cherry Riddim (4:06)
Review: Fresh from his recent Critical Music dispatch, Breda badboy Bryce returns to Fresh 86 with more sprightly contemporary dancefloor missives. On the A-side 'Sun' sets the scene with its rattling breaks and wavey, woozy chords while 'Tayga' flips to introspective, halftime emotional mode. Meanwhile on the B, 'Fashion' brings a little hip-shaking percussive flare while 'Cherry Riddim' closes with a more downtempo bliss. Juicy.

The Wetter The Better
Cat: DEEPR 007. Rel: 03 May 22
  1. Deep Penetration (5:12)
  2. DNB Spacedrift (4:31)
  3. Midnight Special (6:13)
  4. Soul Brotha #1 (6:03)
Review: Detroit's Filthiest is Julian Shamou, also known as 313 Bass Mechanics and many other names. His strain of ghettotech is light and airy, with plenty of melodic hooks to nice up the dance, but it's absolutely music to get down low to. He's been prolific on labels like Casa Voyager and Bass Agenda lately, but here he rocks up to Deep & Roll with four refined slices of machine funk. There's a spooky, spaced out but soulful vibe to 'Deep Penetration', while 'Dnb Spacedrift' ups the tempo and lays down hazy pad tones. 'Midnight Special' is a chiller with plenty of weight in the low end, while 'Soul Brotha #1' finishes the EP off with a house tempo roller that could go down a treat in a warm up set.

Cat: SENKA 010. Rel: 06 May 22
  1. Jelly Smoke (4:10)
  2. Come On (5:17)
  3. Demon Seed (4:08)
Review: Senka Sonic reach double figures with this chunky new one from Dub Phizix. This one comes hot on the heel so this last outing on this label back in April, which was his first new music for a year and a half. It finds him again in good form from the off with 'Jelly Smoke' offering up precision drum work and stepping grooves that mine new ground. 'Come On' then spins out on old school jungle vibes, with a silky and rolling bassline and soulful vocal snatches and dreamy pads. Last of all comes 'Demon Seed' with its distorted bass and clattering percussion working you into a sweat.

Cat: SENKA 009. Rel: 06 Apr 22
  1. Blood Moon (4:53)
  2. Little Light (4:30)
  3. Roundeer (4:53)
Review: Well this is a bit of a treat... Good old Phizzy back with his first productions in 18 months. As always with the Senka soldier, the vibes are well considered, meaningful and not a regurgitation of anything he or his friends have done before. 'Blood Moon' sees him dipping his toes into Autonomic territories with heavy layers of emotion and restraint, 'Little Light' is a string plucking lullaby that flips into a sea of vocal textures while 'Roundeer' brings the bashy finale where the drums do all the singing. Let's hope he doesn't leave it so long next time!

LIN001 004

  1. LIN001 (4:33)
  2. LIN002 (5:19)
  3. LIN003 (4:40)
  4. LIN004 (4:10)
Review: The North Quarter locks in another superbly stylish EP of functional but characterful drum & bass rhythms here. This one comes from LIN000 and features bunch of self titled tracks. The first is a supper, with fluid bass and low end oscillations. The second is more roomy and cancerous. It operates in an underwater world of bendy bass and crisp hits, then the flip side opens with a more raw, textural and fixing mix of synths and clacking hits before the closer pairs a high speed breakbeat with synths that twist and turn at their own speed.

Pressure (pink marbled vinyl 10")
Cat: SSR 008. Rel: 28 Apr 22
  1. Pressure (5:35)
  2. Pressure (M-Beat remix) (5:52)
Review: Fugitive is a production duo made up of Aquasky's Dave Wallace and Shaun O'Hara, who also recorded as Mad Dog and Special Red amongst many other projects in the early 90s. Now they're back on Sub System with 'Pressure', a rowdy slice of D&B with some lively sampling that has all the Akai crunch you could wish for. It's not clear if it's an archive rip or a new joint, but either way it's got more than enough goods to mash up the dance. As if that wasn't enough, veritable legends M-Beat are on the B-side offering a remix which leans back on the beat and gives the toasting MC ample space to do his thing.

  4. Dream Series Vol 1 (4:37)
Review: American jazz pianist Tom Sochas delights fans here by finally unveiling a long awaited debut album. Oh this long player, Sochas mixes up a love of hard hitting post- bop with an ongoing passion for western classical repertoire and results in richly textural and emotive sounds that range from Monk-style to much more delicate in nature. Spaced out analogue electronics add extra layers to the majestic keys and drums and long- time collaborators Julian Knapp on saxophone and Laurie Carpenter on trumpet also add plenty of extra feeling and flavour

One Time (Collectors Edition)
One Time (Collectors Edition) (limited hand-numbered 12" picture disc)
Cat: TEMPOSPEED 06. Rel: 07 Apr 22
  1. One Time (7:32)
  2. Just Me (6:04)
  3. Something Nu? (5:39)
Review: A blast from the past made in the present: Tempo Records present this gem from Hidden Agenda (Jason Goodings), who operates in a well-trodden but no less effective drum n' bass style. Printer Jams and running companions abound on this three-track 12", fusing urban breakbeat, old-skool jazz and obscure samples to solid effect. 'One Time' certainly won't be playing on our turntables just one time, while 'Just Me' eases into neurofunk and 'Something Nu?' lowers the tempo to deliver just as much - fans of Concord Dawn or John B will be impressed.

Taygeta Code Remixes Part 1
Cat: ARTKLP 003RE1. Rel: 30 Mar 22
  1. All In (Coco Bryce remix) (5:30)
  2. Broken Dreams (Specialist X remix) (6:53)
Review: French label Artikal Music revisits J Kenzo's work with a couple of fresh remixes from it by a couple of cutting edge drum & bass artists. Coco Bryce is a firm favourite here and he flips 'All In' into a rugged rhythm that is softened by the silky bass and synths. It is both physical yet emotional and that duality is sure to lead to plenty of high profile plays. On the flip side is Specialist X who works his magic on 'Broken Dreams.' This one is a more heads down and dark number for the dead of night, with menacing and stepping drums and sci-fi sound design. This is the first of what will be a series of remix EPs and we're already looking forward to the next one.

Cat In The Bag 08 (marbled vinyl 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CITB 008. Rel: 01 Apr 22
  1. Junglefever - "Rocksteady" (5:22)
  2. Junglefever - "Murderous Style" (5:10)
  3. Dart - "Bling" (5:23)
  4. Dart - "Raggamuffin Core" (4:48)
Review: It's raining breaks! A hailstorm of jungle and drum n' bass has hit our shelves, and Junglefever & Dart's 'Cat In The Bag' is one of many of its new wax droplets to settle onto our turntables. This new release morphs out from jungle into techstep, set to a limited yellow marbled vinyl. Junglefever occupies the A with two psychotic forays through ragga jungle; bouncy bass riffs drive hoovers forward on 'Rocksteady', while drums seem to whip our minds into submission through the twin modes distortion and overdrive on 'Murderous Style'. Dart's 'Bling' and 'Raggamuffin Core' are naturally more iced out by reeses and crunch, sounding like the moving detritus of a raggamuffin-manned factory.

  1. Focus (4:53)
  2. Wayback (3:52)
  3. Together (3:56)
  4. Ye (3:43)
Review: K Lone has been turning out some of the fresh bass-related tunes of the last few years. He can do it all from silky deep house to scuffed to garage to fine vocal jams. For his latest outing, the second release from Sweet N Tasty, he looks across the Atlantic to Chicago for a firing four tracker of mega fresh juke and footwork tracks. The drum programming is tight, the samples are drenched in heat, heart and soul and the chords are super warm and deep. It is a great take on the juke template that is likely to make for some real summer highlights.

Riddim Up
Riddim Up (limited 10")
Cat: BBH 059. Rel: 12 Apr 22
  1. Riddim Up (Reggae mix) (3:35)
  2. Riddim Up (dub mix) (3:36)
  3. Riddim Up (Jungle mix) (4:32)
Review: V Recordings' appropriately named 'Chronic Rollers' is back with another bomb cut. The lead tune here came to acclaim first when Kenny played it during his Formations Records Black History Month Stream on D&BTV and since then it has had plenty of heavy plays. Here it gets served up as three different versions with a dub, reggae and jungle mix. The first is the reggae version with big, steel plated drums and plenty of bounce. The dub mix then pairs things back and allows the FX room to breathe and the jungle mix is a real peak time roller.

Crackdown (25 Years Of Metalheadz VIP Etched Series) (limited 1-sided etched 12" reeditado)
Cat: MDZ25VIP 1. Rel: 12 Apr 22
  1. Crackdown (6:29)
Review: Goldie's influential Metalheadz label continues to mark 25 years in the game with super special, one-sided 12". It arrives with Soul:r and Inneractive logos delicately etched into one side of vinyl and one of the label's biggest and best hits of recent time son the other. Goldie himself has described it as "one of the purest drum and bass tracks I've ever heard," and it sure is a super distilled but hugely effective cut from two powerhouses in Spirit and the late great Soul:r boss Marcus Intalex. The icy cold synths, minimalist drums and futurist sense of atmosphere all make this a truly timeless classic.

Review: Destination Japan: Metricmania pays homage to the motherland with this EP named after one of the country's biggest national parks. As with previous explorations, the vibes are far-reaching, star-gazing and steeped in jazzy motifs. Highlights include the woozy vapour trails and loose off-grid breaks of the title track 'Daisetsuzan', the Detroitian marching jam '33.a- Vero' and the tightly-coiled spring energy and jittering drums of 'Www.arai'.

Cat: SSR 007. Rel: 30 Mar 22
  1. Raised In The 80s (4:59)

Review: Old enough to know better, young enough to still skank out till sunrise, old heads Missing and Skeleton Army link-up for this special synth-funk-meets-jungle odyssey on Sub System. Big synth basses and arpeggios, this sits somewhere between Seba and John B but with the energy of No U-Turn's Nico. For more of the jungle iciness flip for Tim Reaper's remix where another vocal is added to the mix and bags of space can be found amid every happy slapping breakbeat. Raised in the 80s, hooked in the 90s, still battering it in the 2020s.

  3. Rituals (6:25)
  4. Thorns (7:48)
Review: Welsh warrior Quartz continues his great run of form as he follows his recent Rupture EP with this megalithic four-pack on Mako's Utopia. 'Krokodil' snaps us into reality with a fittingly dystopic setting with urgent vocal stabs and glacial breaks, 'Gateway' takes us on a breezier mission while 'Rituals' is all about those chubby rounded bass/kick fluctuations and sinewy stabs; minimal in make-up, maximum in force. Finally the title track closes off this bleak, chaotic serenade with some outrageous drumfunk choppage. Serious jungle business for 2022; life ain't always rosy... it can be very thorny too.

We kick off with a great remix from Rupture co-founder Double O who adds another layer of angst and grit to their 'Conquered History' cut from last year before the pair deliver a solo each and one collab between them. 'White Boy Killer' from Pliskin is total drumfunk magic, Response's 'Closer' is a heads-down stepper that hums with gallons of subs while 'M 16 Jungle' sees them linking up for a wry moment of 4x4 thunder and lighting made of pure cymbals. Strictly for the turbo heads.

Dreamer Minds
Cat: GOLD 001. Rel: 05 Apr 22
  1. Riffz - "Dreamer Minds" (7:55)
  2. Dub Liner - "Sensation" (6:05)
  3. Rifz & Dub Liner - "Can U Feel" (5:16)
Review: French revivalists Jungle Cat continue stoking the breakbeat fire with authority and class with three more floor wounders, this time from Polish Riffz and UK solider Dub-Liner. Riffz takes the lead with 'Dreamer Minds' that flips between deliciously deep and outlandishly wild. Dub-Liner follows with 'Sensation', a dreamy soul-out that could have easily landed on Dextrous's Ruff Quality back in the day. Finally the two link-up for an almighty finale where the sweetness of the pads and the absolute venom of the breaks collide with chaotic effect on 'Can U Feel'. Fire in the hole!

Lurkin Shadow
Cat: TUNNEL 009. Rel: 10 May 22
  1. Lurkin Shadow (6:10)
  2. Urban Uncertainty (6:36)
Review: Time Tunnel live up to their name once again with these two stone cold breakbeat tear-ups from Riffz & Msymiakos. Straight to 93: 'Lurking Shadow' is DJ Crystl-level drum wizardry with more edits than publishing house while 'Urban Uncertainty' goes turbo with the breaks before dropping into some highly seductive pads mid-way. Think Randall in Paradise Club, 5am at AWOL. Timeless future fusion.
