Cat: DISCIPLINE 002. Rel: 14 Aug 18
  1. Antagonist - "Cycles" (6:53)
  2. Fortune - "Rough Divide" (7:28)
Review: Deep messages from Manchester: Antagonist & Fortune follow up their launch release last year with two more outstanding compositions. Antagonist takes the A with a superb spacious stepper that springs into action mid way with spasmodic splashes of grainy acid and lush deep breeze pads. Fortune brings up the rear with a hurricane jam that sits somewhere between Blocks & Escher, Seba and Paradox under his Alaska alias. Stone cold futurism.

  1. Degrees Of Separation (4:54)
  2. Missing Piece (4:29)
  3. Tannan (4:34)
  4. Street Scense (3:47)
Review: According to Integral head honchos Artificial Intelligence, their latest EP "comprises four exhilarating episodes that will take you on an exhilarating journey". It is, then, a box set of sorts: a short season of all-action cuts designed to entertain from start to finish. They fittingly begin with something suitably filmic - the sweeping cinematic movements, head-in-the-clouds atmospherics, punchy beats and sumptuous vocals of "Degrees of Separation", before fusing elements of soul and neo-classic on superb liquid roller "Missing Piece". The experienced duo cleverly ratchet up the tension on the creepy, heavy and intense B-side opener "Tannan", before reaching a triumphant conclusion via the smooth and life-affirming brilliance of "Street Scense".

  1. Black Fire (6:52)
  2. Hoax (6:28)
  3. Deep Signals (6:03)
  4. Tryptamin (6:19)
Review: Denting the discogs of Repertoire, Samurai and UVB-76 in the last 18 months, Manchester's rising deepsmith Artilect brings new blueprints once again, this time on Horizons. Four cuts heavy, it's nothing but an all out love letter to the drums as we're ricocheted from break to break; "Black Fire" is a dizzying blur of Q&A edits and pranged out spatial textures, "Hoax" is pure bittersweet jungle rollage (think Skitty or Seba when he's in a particularly dark mood), "Deep Signals" flips with a stripped back stepper riddim allowing the atmospheres to blast in and coat the groove with illustrative ice while "Tryptamin" closes the show on the darkest note as shades of dub are added to the mix. Think 4am locked in with Loxy at Rupture and you're down the right rabbit hole.

  1. Dub Fi Dub (4:44)
  2. Teefa (5:49)
  3. Cold Rushing (6:44)
  4. Ruff (5:27)
Review: Aside from being a killer producer of retro-futurist hardcore and revivalist jungle, Borai also happens to be Bristol's most dapper man (few others can rock a vintage 1980s McLaren formula one leather jacket with the same panache). Here he returns to London label Them with a quartet of suitably heavyweight dancefloor workouts. The producer's love of rave-era tape pack vocal samples resurfaces on the bustling, sub-heavy madness of 14- BPM jungle A-side cuts "Dub Fi Dub" and the fizzing "Teefa". On the flip, the sometime Hotline Recordings artist changes tack, first serving up a throbbing chunk of acid techno insanity before diving headfirst into weighty but party-starting dubstep pastures on killer closer "Ruff".

Swinging Flavors #7 (turquoise vinyl 7")
Cat: BMRSF 007. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

  1. Push Through It (5:25)
  2. Trees In The Wind (5:22)
Review: Calibre on Digital's Function. Life doesn't get much better than this. The Belfast doyen has brought along his mate Jet Li for the ride and the results are every bit as golden as you'd expect. "Push Through It" is an immaculate string affair with that classic Signature poignancy while "Trees In The Wind" echoes with a marbled synth texture, sudden flickers of piano and yearning guitar twangs. A match made in soulful roller heaven.

  3. I Want U (6:29)
  4. Play This One In Toronto (6:35)
Review: Last spotted on Second Hand Fun in 2016, young Montreal producer Comfort Zone returns with his first serious debut 12" and it's a beautiful game of two halves; Both versions of "Moonrocks" flex and wriggle with a hazy late 90s / early 2000s Freerangey / Jimpster type of dreaminess while all-out breakbeat jungle rollers "I Want U" and "Play This One In Toronto" show a whole other side to the young man. No time for sitting around and getting comfy on these ones...

  1. Balanced (4:55)
  2. Leisure (5:43)
Review: Aussie breaksmith oft spotted lurking under the alias Sean Thomas or T McAlister, Cop Envy brings the broken heat to Cry Baby for the label's second release. Two sides, two stories; "Balanced" is a woozy aquatic halftime affair with big blunderbuss drums and rich abyssal textures while "Leisure" brings the tempo down for a groove that digs right into the genus of the hardcore continuum. Rolling, iced but not without its machine funk warmth. Nothing to cry about here at all...

You (limited gold vinyl 12")
Cat: DDD 07T. Rel: 24 Jul 18
  1. You (5:18)
  2. King Of The Beats (7:06)
Review: Dom returns to his Dubs Dungeon once again and re-opens the Dillinja crypt for two more long-coveted dubplates. "You" is fresh from 94 with subs so thick and misty they'll freeze you to your bones and breaks so sharply edited you now have pierced ears just reading this short review, this was a major missile for the AWOL massive. "King Of The Beats" is a year or two deeper into Dillinja's unmatchable discography with a killer b-boy sample, rocket fuel drums and a waspy bassline that stings from a 10 mile radius. Jungle royalty.

  4. Persian Prince - "Revolutionary Junglist" (CS mix) (5:21)
Review: Those DATS keep getting unearthed and remastered as Dlux and Persian Prince hit the fifth volume in the series. Once again, it's an open and shut case of music that was decades ahead of its time. Spacey to the point of psychedelic, freeform to the point of jazz; Dlux was a master at those lean unpredictable grooves that have stood the test of time so well. Highlights include the sudden chops into funk breaks on "Drummer's Return" and the frantic gamey 8 bit bubbles of "I Gotcha Part 2". Ageless slammage.

  3. Aint That Bad (feat DRS) (5:21)
  4. Unexpected (5:21)
Review: Brazilian don Patife returns with his new gen wingman Vangeliez. Following last year's "The Vibe Is Comin'" on V's Sun And Bass album, the duo step up with a full quartet of dreamy soul rollers. "Living Together" features MC royalties Fats and Stamina in a harmonic sun-kissed stand off over a light afternoon groove while "On The Floor" takes us much deeper into the night with an LSB-style deep roll. Flip for more MC premiership as DRS unleashes more wisdom on the soft, restrained groove of "Ain't That Bad" before "Unexpected" closes with the darkest treat of the set; a loose drummed shaker that sounds like it landed 15 years ago on Soulr. Accolades don't come any higher.

Review: Launched earlier this year digitally, Dub Phizix's Ohmgrown series is a collection of tracks sculpted from the ground up. All completely designed from scratch and finished without the usual endless polish and over detailing, these fresh-free-for-all halftime cuts represent the Manchester artist at his most lucid. They also carry more than enough space for creative MCs to let loose on. From the strange tape stop trippiness of "Engage" to the cosmic oriental plucks and soft cries of "The Waterbody" by way of 23rd century dancehall fury of "Get Fresh", this is Dub Phizix at his most direct and innovative. Get involved or go ohm.

Review: Over a year has passed since he last appeared on SUNANDBASS Records with his "Serious" EP, FD returns to his spiritual stomping ground with three more timeless jams. As always with FD, the record covers the full spectrum; "All Yours" has a silky, soulful, Lenzman feel resonating throughout, "Second Villain" sounds like Randall in a basement at 3am while "Wah Wah Track" is a sunset reloader in waiting. Think Marky, think Patife, think Calibre. You know the drill...

Cat: PM 037. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Frankie Gunns (Gremlinz version) (5:19)
  2. Frankie Gunns (Paradox remix) (6:49)
Review: Dev Pandya AKA Paradox clearly thinks that "Frankie Gunns", a vintage Gremlinz production from 2009 that first appeared on a multi-artist Renegade Hardware double-pack, has been a little overlooked. He's decided to reissue it on his label, adding a fresh 2018 remix of his own. Gremlinz head-in-the-clouds original - a wonderful combination of slowly shifting ambient chords, hedgerow field records, rambunctious jungle breakbeats and booming sub-bass - nestles on the A-side, with Pandya's revision on the flip. His rework is, arguably, even better, with deliciously dreamy ambient chords seemingly drifting in and out of a backing track rich in punchy D&B beats, stabbing riffs and rumbling bass. When Pandya ratchets up the ruffneck riddims midway through, the hairs on your arms and neck will leap to attention.

  1. White Gorilla Cult (4:59)
  2. Strategy Of Two Heavens (6:10)
  3. Ujimasa (6:57)
  4. Shinto Muso-Ryu (6:07)
Review: May the clan wars recommence. Hojo Clan founder Shiken Hanzo returns with four more ghostly, constructs. "White Gorilla Cult" takes the lead, marching into the dense unknown fog, the defiance and sense of suspense building as the journey progresses. "Strategy Of Two Heavens" continues the drama with more war drum thumps and tense tones. Cinematic and pregnant with tension, full release is granted on the eerie, chilling breaking down. Flip for "Ujimasa" where momentum is ramped and battle is in full throe; relentless tribal beats are peppered with demonic, alien textures and the sense of conflict is palpable. "Shinto Muso Ryu" brings closure. A poignant calm after the storm laced with feint eastern flutes and a synapse snapping riddim. The battle is won but the war continues...

Review: More thrillingly heavy and mind-altering fare from UVB-76 offshoot Droogs, this time from previously unheralded Bristol producer and "close crew associate" Holsten. A-side "Abscess" is suitably dark and wild, with Holsten utilizing creepy, bass-heavy breakdowns to ratchet up the tension before unleashing the mother of all jungle riddims - cut-up and edited in true early '90s fashion - some distinctively trippy vocal samples before moving on to the flipside where the clandestine, paranoid feel continues on "Momentum".

Review: One of Seattle's most prominent bone rattlers Homemade Weapons gets lashes out with another "Weaponry" session. Once again bringing his comrades to the fore, besides the turbine shakes and militant insistency of the solo piece "Subcept" the EP features a rollcall of HW's most talented peers; Red Army joins him once again to build on "Sleep Terror" with the flighty, shaken and stirred "Primary", Belgian dons return the favour from their Mutations LP with a rolling dust-up that is "Riddle" while currently anonymous new duo make their debut on "Paroxysm", a blistering piece of work that's powered by wild drum detail and sudden bass drones that fly out of nowhere. Ready, aim, fire...

Review: Newcastle's TJK returns to Italian experimental hub La Beaute Du Negatif with one of his most comprehensive and far-reaching EPs to date. Paying homage, perhaps, to the beauty of the loops that most our favourite records are made from "Start To End" ignites with the smouldering, percussive haze of "Jenesis" before plunging deeper and deeper into the jungle and IDM waters; the emotional heaviness of "Do The Job", the 20/20 vision and razor sharp breaks of "Place", the cosmic poignancy of the finale "YYRYRR" flow like immersive white knuckle trips, layered with textures and twists you'll be hearing for years.

Review: In case you've not heard, Kings of the Rollers is a new D&B "super-group" featuring the combined talents of scene stalwarts Serum, Voltage and Blade Runner. This is their debut EP and, as you'd expect, it boasts far more hits than misses. As the Rave Alarm title makes clear, much of the material here is far more raw and intoxicating than your average Hospital release. Check, for example, opener "Euphoria", where razor-sharp electronic riffs bounce above fluctuating sub-bass and punchy jungle drums, and the rumbling gut-punch that is synth heavy title track "Rave Alarm". Elsewhere, Get Set Go is a fuzzy, hot-stepping workout, while closer "Running Man" wraps aggressive bass, creepy chords and ghostly flute lines around a retro-futurist riddim.

Review: PsychoQuake offshoot PsychoDynamik has long specialized in compilation style EPs brimming with ragga-fired jungle business and ruffneck drum and bass rollers. That's what you get on the sub-label's sizzling seventh release. Ragga toaster UK Apache rhymes at breathtaking speed over Le Peuple De L'Herbe's hot-stepping, dub-fired D&B riddim on punchy opener "No Escape", while fellow mic man Perfect Giddimani makes a similarly positive impression on Kursiva's reggae-drum and bass remix of Tomawok's jaunty "Party Time". Flip for Benny Page's more jungle-tinged - but similarly minded - remix of Tomawok's "My Sound" and the fantastically raw, rolling jungle/dub fusion of Isaac Maya and Mekha's "Bad Inna Dance".

  4. Tahatan (O$VMV$M Redux) (2:54)
Review: Om Unit's exceptional third album Self undergoes a series of reappraisals and reconstructions from an array of exciting talent. dBridge teases with a little autonomic charm and his own vocals on "What I Can Be", SKRS (Seekers International) get choppy and tropical with a swathing, murking twist on "Passages" while Sorrow takes Om Unit and Rider Shafique to touching introspective places in a barbed, evocative way that only he knows how. Finally Young Echo affiliates Neek and Jabu slide us into slow motion with the wonderfully sleepy "Tahatan". Less remixes and more brand new chapters; Cosmic Bridge never disappoint.

He takes the lead with the airy tribal soul of "Former Self" before we're hurled deep into the humanised pads and creeping arpeggios of Pessimist's swampy subs on "Indigo". Flip for two slices of Monic; first a physical percussive trip in the form of "Stampede", then a much more sedate, exploratory and introspective experiment with Grebenstein for a far out finale.
