The Pressure (5:41)
Lovin That You're Givin (with Syntax) (5:15)
Be Free (with DJ B) (6:14)
Operate Da Mixa (with DJ Tuf) (5:48)
Review: After a brief pause to allow their frankly huge 36-track VA compilation to sit and breathe a while, Motive Hunter Audio is back at the sharp end of the jungle scene with this new EP from the brilliant ARKYN. It's a lovely slab of grey wax that revives a blend of hardcore jungle techno that is not for the faint of heart and comes with a tasteful homage to this subgenre's roots. Packed with piano stabs and 4x4 kicks, the EP delivers controlled mayhem that is perfect for the club as collaborations with SYNTAX, DJ B, and ARKYN's alter-ego DJ TUF all bring depth and hints of early Dutch rave influences.

Cat: SAMURAI 1002. Rel: 24 Jan 25
ASC - "S100" (7:44)
Reeko - "Codex Gigas" (6:32)
Sam KDC - "Mutilate" (5:53)
Torn - "When The Light Was Born" (8:23)
Review: Hyaku marks the 100th vinyl release for Samurai Music, so shout out to the crew for staying dedicated to the format. It also celebrates nearly 17 years of dedication to quality music and timeless design and, for this milestone, the label has assembled producers who epitomise the current Samurai sound. Each track offers a unique take on that from the crunchy breakbeats of ACS to the relentless energy of Sam KDC's 'Mutilate.' Together, these contributions form a diverse collection that highlights the artistry and innovation of this talented crew while also reflecting the journey Samurai has been on for all these years. Here's to many more.

Digital Rain
Cat: FRO 030. Rel: 17 Dec 24
Digital Rain (5:19)
I Miss You (4:12)
Review: The always eminent Daniel Avery shares his latest two-track single through Fabric Originals, and describes it as his very own personal take on "broken euphoria... the other side of Room 1 that will crush your skull and fill your soul in equal measure." Following on from the 'Wonderland/Running' EP released back in March, 'Digital Rain' leads as the torrential breaks-sodder, palpitator, tear-conductor, you name it... the track dashes expected tempos for a middling 160, square between techno and jungle. 'I Miss You' on the B hears Avery push things far further, breaking the throttle and locking it into permanent top gear; perhaps Avery can help popularise this sound of angelic overdrive, more commonly heard on the net.

Sex Tune 3
Cat: SCR 024. Rel: 08 Jan 25
Bow Street Runner - "Sex Tune 3" (5:30)
Lavery & Bow Street Runner - "Punani Mania" (5:08)
Lavery - "One Tune" (4:43)
Review: .The opening jam on this new EP from Sub Code has got it all - the driving breakbeats, the proper lush chords and the heart-aching r&b vocal sample, pitched up just enough. Bow Street Runner ensures they all coalesce into a standout tune that tugs at the emotions while also demanding you move your body. No wonder it's called 'Sex Tune 3.' Lavery & Bow Street Runner's 'Punani Mania' is just as super sweet with another brillaint vocal sample, tenderness in the piano chords and drive in the jungle rhythms. After that collaboration between Lavery & Bow Street Runner comes a Lavery solo 'One Tune', which is more naughty with air raid sirens, some mad mic work and warped bass filth.

Tune For Stu
Review: A bittersweet release... Laffin Buddah and Parallax link up to reissue last year's rave treasure trove 'Palomas' and help raise money for the family of The Bridge Project member Stuart Heath who sadly passed away this year. The original rave energy and crucial 4x4 stompage of 'Palomas' is matched by a brand new cut penned by the other half of the project Lee Shilton named 'Tune For Stu'. A firing, darkwave tear-up with all the blasts, shreds and twists Stu would have demanded himself, it's a fitting epitaph to a man sorely missed. Show some support!

Review: Chase & Status and Stormzy coming together was always going to be huge. One rules the charts, the other the clubs, and between them they cooked up a massive single that got heard everywhere all summer long, including a special live performance of it in Ushuaia Ibiza. Now you can own it on a slab of vinyl that has been cut nice and loud, which is perfect for the tune - the bass is devastating, the bars from Stormzy are hard, the energy is dark and unrelenting and it's the perfect sort of jungle cross over sound that will continue to be heard everywhere well into 2025.

Ritual (12")
Cat: SENSI 012. Rel: 28 Jan 25
Y Do U Think I'm Not U (5:19)
Ritual (6:19)
Review: Billed as a "deep think about AI and junglism" and a "deep dive into tribalism and jungle techno" respectively, Coco Bryce's latest toe-tapper doubles as a mysterious bowling down darkside breakage tunnels, manifested in the twin tracks 'Ritual' and 'Y Do U Think I'm Not U'. Both unsettling, Reese-bound tunes, we can't be sure whether any AI programs were used in the making of these tracks, but they do command that same sense of vanguard mystery that pervades the technological climate of today; facing the deep, neurally netted unknown, perhaps surrendering entirely to it. Arpeggiated bliss kicks in at around the halfway mark of the A tune, whilst primal pan flutes and synth bowls seem to fuel the mystique forever on the B.

Glass Box (5:46)
Endless Waiting (6:04)
Reflexive Perspective (5:20)
Backpropagation (5:43)
Review: This new one from Cyberlife might be rooted in techno but it is closer day a much wider world of sounds. The opener for instance rides on a nice loopy minimal rhythm you might find the likes of Batu or Pev' crafting. It comes with a lovely and dubby low end and then 'Endless Waiting' gets a little more light, with sci-fi sound effects fizzing about the mix as a dystopian automated groove takes you onwards with a hint of ancient tribal ritual to it. 'Reflexive Perspective' brings the sort of synths you'd find in some IDM over cavernous low ends and sombre, sustained chords and 'Backpropagation' shuts down with a watery and languid rhythm full of celestial depth.

Review: CYBERMISSION is back on INDEX:Records with a collection of tunes that were written in Berlin between 2021 and 2022. They all offer up signature styles that fuse the delights of luminous IDM-pop with uplifting electro rhythms. We're told that themes of self-discovery, deep romance and the bittersweet memories of what we've lost all inspired the creation of these cuts and that shows in their inescapable emotions and storytelling undertones. Both introspective yet designed to get you to show outward energy, these are five fresh and original cuts to get your new year off to a flyer.

Review: Uppers & Downers tap the raw, yet-to-be fully processed talents of Yerevan's Dave N.A., for a stunningly angelic nu-breaks come jungle come acid outing. Having co-founded his local Armenian ABC Community DJ collective, Dave N.A. attests his non-applicability to the normal, formal rules of dance music, declaring himself diplomatically immune to boring tempi, drab beats or morose melodies. Instead, the likes of 'Radiance', 'XL', and 'AIR' subject us to some of the most riveting soundscapes and shellages imaginable, drawing on a frenetic confluence of rave and hard bass traditional sonics.

Dead Mans Chest - "Mystery Machines" (4:28)
Aeon Four & FFF - "Look Inside" (6:30)
Fanu - "Green Fields Forever" (5:09)
Esc & Mineral - "Photosynthesis" (6:14)
Review: On a mission to "make d&b great again", Finland's Straight Up Breakbeat pass through once more with the second of three EPs formed to showcase modern junglism. Kicking off, 'Mystery Machines' sees Glastonbury's Dead Mans Chest slam down some deadly amen choppage reinforced by haunting vocal FX and paranoid drones. Aeon Four & FFF's 'Look Inside' is a jungle-tekno roller, served with chunky hardcore style amens and a side of warm old-skool pads. Keeping the mid-90s vibe alive, the tripped out 'Green Fields Forever ' from Fanu - which drops hot on the heels of his greatly received remaster of Source Direct's 'Stars' - delivers airtight amen trickery, weaving synth washes and blissful dubby basslines. Esc & Mineral round things off with 'Photosynthesis', a pensive stepper highlighting cut-up breaks waltzing with cheeky synth nudges and a wide, rugged bassline. If the pioneers had buried some beefed-up tracks in a time-capsule to inspire future generations, they would probably sound a lot like 'States of Art II'.

Close Your Eyes (7:03)
Destroyer (VIP) (5:44)
Review: Exclusive! Over Shadow unleash these two super-hot rarities from around 93/94. Both big tunes on dubplate at the time, especially 'Close Your Eyes' which was a big tune in Fabio's early Speed sets, they finally see the vinyl light of day after all these years. 'Close Your Eyes' is a beautiful atmospheric whirlwind while 'Destroyer VIP' lived up to its name. Still sounding heavier than a helicopter over 30 years later.

Vibe
Push Dat
Pimpin'
Review: UK garage goes increasingly wonky on DJ Jackum's latest EP for Time Is Now. Working in Skrillexy sound design - nasal growls, puffy metal snares, thin but heavy mixes - the enigmatic Jackum makes a real racket of a debut here, delivering four genre-poking bangers of a difficult-to-peg style. 'Vibe' is especially anthemic, being a rare example of a garage tune centred largely on the second and fourth beat handclap and not the kick; 'Push Dat' veers more into hooligan rave territory, pushing the to bass bus to redline; and the final 'Pimpin'' offers a crazed shuffle and vocal sample; this is a bold and creative expansion of an existing sound.

Re-resistance (5:56)
I'm Here To Stay (7:51)
The Storm (remix) (5:42)
Review: More dark arts from the man and his machine; Dom & Roland tears 2025 a new one with four powerful drum & bass compositions. Provocative and unapologetic, 'Under The Spell' snaps the firmest of wands and does so for the best part of 10 minutes. A real hypnotic showdown. 'Re-Resistance' meanwhile takes us into much more industrial, abstract territories in a way that you might imagine Krust or Amit might. 'I'm Here To Stay' is a much more placid, spacious affair laced with lush pads and a smouldering vocal that induces euphoria at 50 paces. Complete with a tearing remix of 'The Storm', it's another essential 12" from one of d&b's most consistent artists.

Soundboy Killa (feat Natty Campbell - The Allergies remix)
Jump On It (feat Top Cat - Guadi & Don Letts dub remix)
Review: The proverbial 'Soundboy Killa' is an enduring trope in soundsystem culture at large, referring to the apparently inherent enmity and villainy of the turntablist. Said to have originated in the days of system clashes, the assassin in question presumably refers to the opposing MC, whose barraging verbiage may pack enough semiotic punch to K.O. the opposition through mere utterances alone. Here Natty Campbell and the Freestylers pay tribute to the theme as progeny of the 90s big beat scene; having come up in the age of Fatboy Slim and Chemical Brothers, the supergroup first faced off in a whirl of tricky dub and armour-plated cold cuttage, dispatching two honorary tracks in the style of each artists' respective greatest scene-hitters: Dub Pistols' 'Cyclone' and Freestylers' 'Roughneck'. Now 'Soundboy Killa' and 'Jump On It' in turn hear a remix from Allergies and Guadi & Don Letts, the latter of which is especially experimental in its use of a peaky, 2-step shuffle.

World Championships (Tim Reaper VIP) (6:31)
World Championships (FFF VIP) (5:26)
Review: Drum & bass bastion Future Retro consign two next-gen producers, FFF and Tim Reaper, to a full ten minutes of raggatonic shell-shockage. Both try their hand at the now-rare 'VIP' treatment (the acronym stands for Variation In Production, but how this differs to the term "remix" is truly up in the air, save for the fact that VIP often means "self-remix" or "remix by original artist"). Following 2024's 'Meeting Of The Minds' VIP release, which followed the same format, Reaper notes the two tracks' creation in April 2020, made from parts of the other artists' original tunes. 'World Championships' by the pair of them is the variable tune of choice here, with Reaper's version providing a glimmery ambience, while FFF's is much stodgier, rougher, less padded.

Noovijmbre (part 2) (3:53)
Review: The mission-statement-and-artist-name Gabber Dub Project, from Germany, take on a bold undertaking. Doing exactly what is said on the tin, this six track explosion dispatches every possible topological contortion of what could be meant by "gabber dub", traversing transient styles from UK hardcore and hardstyle in the process. LXC, Zimmertime and Hurra Hurra offer terrifyingly shouty, jackhammering remixes checking off moods of militancy and warmongery, with 'Dubbersaet' sounding especially propagandistic, described as a "maximum amen workout", shortly before side B both hastens the pace and buries the vibe in shockingly six-foot-deep soil.

Necrodancer (6:31)
Review: Dark Knite renegade Hannibal Selector returns with a broad bounty of militant steppery. 'What A Shame' is a gritty tech step number that's reminiscent of Dom & Roland around the 'Cant Punish Me' era. 'End Of All' meanwhile is more a whole warehouse of chainsaws being let off at the same time, then sped up by some type of dark d&b sorcery. Finally 'Necrodancer' closes on more of a sinister bone rattler flex. Hard, acidic but still bouncy. What an EP.

Lovin Arms (Jungle mix) (4:44)
Review: Tommy Holohan's newest EP is a high-energy tour de force, blending techno, jungle and rave elements. Opening with 'Show Me The Sky', the trance-infused keyboard stabs and massive build-ups create a cinematic techno anthem. The title track, 'Temple Theatre', brings tribal loops, hard-nosed percussion and funky momentum for a relentless dancefloor roller. 'Make Me Feel' dives deep with a rumbling bassline and jungle-inspired drums, enhanced by clever house samples and a commanding vocal drop. Side-2 showcases two mixes of 'Your Lovin Arms'. The Warehouse Mix delivers a heavy rave vibe with raw energy and techno grit, while the Jungle Mix adds a melodic touch with breakbeats, creating a unique fusion of styles. A bold, diverse release, proving Holohan's real knack for blending old-school influences with modern techno innovation.

Review: We're always glad to hear from the wonderful Sneaker Social Club label. It's devotion to exploring and updating the UK continuum deserves plenty of credit and so does this latest missive from Hoovering Blur. It's a raw breakbeat workout with smart filter use and plugging basslines to keep things moving. 'Wacky Robot' is another blend of amens, trippy tones and lithe rhythms and 'Project One' has shuffling breaks that land with a bounce. 'Double Depths' is a fourth and final melange of breakbeat madness and old-school bleep madness. Brilliant.

The A-side features 'Golden Eggs,' a reimagining of Tenor Saw's classic that comes infected with 90s jungle vibes, heavy amen drums and massive bass drops that will rattle yer bass bins. On the B-side, 'Menino De Outro Mundo' blends the Brazilian sounds of Caetano Veloso with samba rhythms and rolling drum & bass beats for a nice fresh fusion. Review: It's the anthem that just keeps on giving. Tim Reaper & Kloke's shattered break sensation 'Foundation' dropped five years ago, it still slays dances to this day and is one of the best drum tracks you can hurl into a mix for instant riotous results. Countless collabs later, the pair return to VIP the track up in their own way. Reaper keeps those drums intact and goes extra on the atmos and pressure whole Kloke eases up on the pressure entirely with a fresh set of pads and a re-chop of the breaks. Both totally revitalise the timeless track that didn't even need update in the first place. Cop this!

Review: New York-based minimal electronica artist Brendon Moeller takes cues from drum & bass and lowercase on his latest record for ESP Institute. Like a sonic Hockney painting, just six generous tracks span a curtly two sides on 12", as classy deluges marry with designer percs, conspiring to make a large but radially controlled splash. Every experiential stylistic base Moeller has passed so far, such as IDM or ambient dub, is revisited and checked off, and combined to form a wet emulsion here. 'Vibrations', the highlight of ours, pays special attention to fricative, stimulant audio-exploits in the sound design, with its synthetic mid-claves and potent rubber basses sounding like the reflex responses it predicts and expects from us. No wonder ESP liken the entire record to one big tingling sensation.

That has been true for almost 17 years now and 100 vinyl releases and to mark that milestone the label has curated a series of killer various artists' EPs. Each one does a fine job of reflecting the eclectic yet coherent output of the label. This one kicks off with dub techno figurehead Brendon Moeller exploring languid jungle rhythms on 'Walking On Glass', then takes in the double time bass power of The Untouchables, ambient drift of Ancestral Voices and future mean of the broken beats of Last Life.

Undergrowth (5:03)
Demon Poetry (5:08)
Keep Things Balanced (6:26)
Review: Silent Force are d&b classicists who always bring the quality with their timeless sounds. And that very much continues to be the case with this first release for the new year. It's a collab between Opal's and Kimbr that opens with 'Alive', a breakbeat lead banger with looping drums and raw snares. 'Undergrowth' is a silky number with a menacing late-night feel in the groaning pads and tense drums. 'Demon Poetry' brings some darker vibes with a prying, distorted, menacing bassline and 'Keep Things Balanced' is another well-controlled, potent drum & bass workout with jungle influences and a dystopian energy to it.

The Deep (5:28)
Spacetek (5:00)
Loose Ends (6:43)
Sky Lab (6:29)
Review: Ready to take a deep dive? Some long lost Orca dubs resurfaced on Deep Jungle last year and here comes the reissue. One of Kosheen co-founder Decoder's earliest projects, Orca's ripples date back to around 92 and seminal labels like Lucky Spin. Here we have a few reloads and few unreleased moments from that era. Highlights include the wonderfully rushy 'Spacetek' with its bellowing pads and springy beats and the didge-blasting wobbler 'Skylab' but the whole EP is fantastic. Have a whale of a time.

Envenomations

Voc-1 Robot (5:18)
Ee-Yo (5:57)
Stinging Insects (6:52)
Stages Of Metals (6:17)
Review: Mike Parker, a master of ice-cold wormhole techno, returns to Samurai Music with an EP that pushes the boundaries of 170BPM dancefloor devastation. 'Envenomations' sees Parker apply his steely, rigorous approach to the drum & bass template, crafting a collection of tracks that are as hypnotic as they are relentless. The A-side features two lean, rolling workouts, 'Voc-1 Robot' and 'Ee-Yo', their minimalist aesthetic and atonal synthesis recalling the icy cool sounds of mid-90s Krust. On the flip, Parker delves into more spacious territory with two tracks originally released digitally, their hypnotic grooves and alien textures showcasing his signature sound. With its blend of techno and drum & bass influences, 'Envenomations' is another standout release from a true auteur.

Exelec
Rtyp
Line II
Norm Code
Review: RTR returns to WeMe with more arresting weaponry and this time the producer puts a jungle slant on things, much like he did with the Xor album. It's an uncompromising approach that soon takes effect with 'Exelec' which marries brutal breaks with bright synth twitches and unrelenting percussion. 'Rtyp' ups the pace and goes into overdrive with manic snares and drum loops all run through with prickly acid madness. 'Line II' strips things back to a more skeletal but no less kinetic set of drums which explode and implode with scratchy textures and warp synth abstraction. 'Norm Code' offers a more soulful sound that journeys into deepest space.
