Review: D.Maximillian first put the sone out in 1999, and it was then reissued again on white vinyl in 2012. This is that version and it's a timeless dub with a lament for Jah married to losing, heart aching horns. The drums never let up and there is s subtle sci-fi style to the keys that rain down which keep it superbly futuristic. 'Moses' also comes as a shorter, tighter 'riddim - mixman dub Section' version on the flip that lays bare some of the fine mixing board magic.

Review: Don't let the name mislead you: the artist behind this release might be called Dad Bod Dubs, which might be suggestive of something overtly jokey or unserious, but the music on this new 7" from Cry No More is rich and textural and not flippant in the slightest. A dubbed version of Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams' appears on the A, coming in a completely different key and swamping the original lyrics in a wash of dub haze. The B-side's 'Experimental Sounds', meanwhile, evokes the slow plod of Tradition's LPs: heavy use of dub effects, combined in such a way as to evoke the sound of a great spaceship-submarine, lurching through the cosmic seas.

Review: Sangie Davis might be best known for co-writing Bob Marley's 'Waiting In Vain', but his lesser-sung originals are just as quality. 'Jingling Keys' is one such song: a roots reggae tune with a message of liberation hemmed into the symbolic theme of keys jingling in an insurgent's pocket. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. On the flip, Flug goes hard with mad digital patterns and Blaktony layers up jacking drums, corrugated bass and dark hits. Great stuff.

Review: Depending on your cultural references you will know that Things Fall Apart is either the title of an album by hip-hop greats The Roots, the debut 1958 novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe or Jon Ronson's latest Radio 4 series on the culture wars. Here it is a deeply mystic techno 10" by Deadbeat. Back in July, he worked with Sa Pa on their first collaborative album on the anniversary of BLKRTZ's 50th release and what a stunner it was. Here he casts free and deep into an oceanic abyss with drum-less floating currents and drifting melodies on 'Things Fall Apart' then a more hunched and dynamic dub groove on 'Adieu Chez Cherie.'

Review: A welcome return from Deepchord, who shows the newset of dub techno players how, exactly, it is done. After 5 years, he returns to Soma Records with 'Functional Extraits 1' here, charting shuffly and subtle trips through echoic hallways ('Mapping') and rain-pattered biomech rainforests ('Shale'), and scanning the post-Earth wasteland for any semblance of a real reggae chord. Review: The Repeat label is doing a great service to the culture of real tech house, nodding to that late 90s sound and carrying work from the likes of Jay Tripwire, Eddie Richards and now Grant Dell. The Dis Chronicles series hits part two with some further obscurities from back in the day which sound as relevant now as they were futuristic back then. 'Disco Hit' was a collaborative effort from Dell and Richie Littler, and it's utterly addictive thanks to those cheeky DX7 organ licks, while Dell's 'Up Yer Strasse Dub' of Len Lewis' 'Illicit' is chunky and dubby in equal measure. Dell's own 'Fari A Come' completes the set with a more overt drop into dub territory, sampling a true Jamaican legend and showing how the tech house sound could transplant onto backroom, head-nodding gear in style.

Review: Dubshop.nl is on a roll at this early stage in its life and for the third outing from the Dutch dub lovers we get a nice white 10" with some real heady tackle from The Disciples. Originally produced and mixed by Russ D. at the Backyard Studio and dropped in 2004 on Boom Shaka, this reissue brings two softer delights back to the fore. 'Oh Jah Jah' is a nice, slow-motion churner with mystic flute leads and natty chords. It stretches out over eight mesmerising minutes and the flipside 'Jah Militia Dub' slows things down with amore organic feel and rich percussion.

Now it is reissued on a strictly limited 10" as three different but equally deadly versions. Review: The Disciples' Russ Bell-Brown has just dropped a great collection of instrumentals on the Experiments LP on Thank You and now Partial serve up a couple of remixes of the group's 'Sabotage' and 'Steppers Nah Sleep' tune. The a-side features 'Sabotage' (Destruction mix), an absolute thriller with oodles of echo and reverb, head-mashing cosmic sounds and alluring kick patterns. It's the same with the deeper, even more heady flipside. These are more highly regarded sounds from this well-respected dub outfit.

Review: The Disciples come through with a mighty fine pair of supersized and seriously heavyweight steppers here on this fresh new Boom-Shacka-Lacka 12". 'Red Moon Rise' has some raw percussive clatter adding highlights to the low ends and streaming synths bring rising tension. On the flip, 'Sticksman Skank' has flabby, wobbly low ends and some warrior leads plated with steel. Add in some big horns and you have an irresistible and effective tune. Both of these cuts come with dubs so you have plenty of weaponry for your next sound system session.

Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

Review: Hivern Discs presents a very intriguing and totally unique project from Drames Rurals, a shadowy collective endeavour credited to "meritxell, oriol, ignasi and juns." Presented across three 7"s packed in a handmade sackcloth box, the careful presentation of the sounds matches up to the music, which rolls at low tempos and deals in hypnotic, ritualistic mantras with an earthen, spiritual feel. There's a dubby twist at times, and it feels like a series of happenings from an in-tune gathering rather than an over-composed project, and therein lies the magic. Who knows whether Hivern main man John Talabot is involved, but after last year's low-key Koraal project he might well be without making a big deal about it.

Review: The newly formed Dreadlionsmusic label out of Austria debuts here with a fresh EP featuring the eponymous producer Dreadlionsmusic. They take charge of two tunes - the first features the mic work of Fitta Warri on 'Full Control' which has fleshy drums wobbling backwards and forwards and natty dub vocals with some fresh and futuristic synth work next to classic chords. Dreadlionsmusic then offers up a dub take, as they also do of the second tune 'Heart & Soul'. The original is another bit of well-made dub steeped in tradition but with fresh production bringing it right up to date.

Review: Multi-Culti regular Dreems (AKA Aussie producer Angus Gruzman) makes music that's deeply psychedelic, but often extremely difficult to neatly pigeonhole. He's at it again on this first outing for Pinchy & Friends, which combines a trio of original cuts with a similar number of total reconstructions from dub hero Scientist. You'll find the former on the A, with analogue-rich synth-wave throbber 'Watchamacallit Machine' being joined by the minimalistic, bass-heavy brilliance of 'String Gadget' and the tactile psychedelic electronic funk of 'Here Comes The New Prophet'. Scientist's dubs are naturally excellent, with the much-loved mix-master re-imagining Gruzman's tracks as deep, spaced-out electronic dub tracks. They're all great, with his dub of 'Here Comes The New Prophet' being the most dancefloor-ready of the lot.

Review: Sub Merchants kick off a new 7" series with a special limited edition pressing of Drumterror ft. Dego Ranking & Ed Hodge's 'Social Dub.' The original version is as juicy as the orange depicted on the cover and finds the label head Drumterror in fine form with with the vocal talents of Ranking serving up some quick, tight bars that vibe nicely with the insistent chord stabs and heavy, rooted drums. The sax styling of Ed Hodge add extra sensuousness. On the flipside you get treated to a 'Social Version' that tweaks the original, layers in more echo and generally flips the vine to a more heady and late night sound.

Review: Chris 'The Dub Organiser' Lane meets Soothsayer Horns here and the results are simply irresistible. 'Soul Dragon Anthem' is a real gem with heart-swelling horn leads that toot and rouse. The chords are lazy and loose and a sprinkling of percussion and natty guitar riffs are integral to the rhythm overall. This 12" comes with some fresh artwork from Jeb Loy Nichols as well as three hefty dub versions, all of which do plenty of damage on a loud system. Another crucial 12" from Ital Counsellor.

Review: The mighty Dubforce served up his essential self titled solo album back in November of 2020. It packed a punch across the eight tunes and immediately sold out despite the import price. One of the standouts from it now makes its way on to its own 7". That tune is 'Liar Dub,' the sort of fat and heavy but tulles tune that could be from a mixing desk in 790s Jamaican or made in a hi-tech studio in Japan next week. The sub bass is all comforting, the hi hats leaving snaking tales and twisted vocal sounds add extra hooks. On the flip, 'Track 2' is a nice bit of contemporary Japanese roots.

Review: Although since 2010 he has been a fully qualified mental health advisor living in the United States, back in the 70s , Wade "Jimmy" Dyce was a key original member of Cultural Roots. He was one of the four vocalists in the harmony group who worked with producer Donovan Germain and released several classics of the day on the Greensleeves label. Wade went it alone in the 80s and lay down some of his own jams with plenty of top musicians at Chris Stanley's famous Music Mountain studio. Review: We write this a day after 4/20 so it is almost perfect timing for the latest Moonshine Recordings 7" to drop with such lovey artwork and stoner sounds. It's a joint production effort between Radikal Guru & Dubbing Sun with Cheshire Cat toasting over the top about his love of the green stuff. The production is a mix of dub, raga and reggae with clean digital pianos and fat, textured bass. The punchy riddim is one to get any sound system crowd going, and then on the flip it's paired back to a slower, more seductive sound. A fine pick up for any pot and dub heads.

Review: There's a pleasing "going back to his roots" feel about this release from Bristol luminary Rob Smith AKA RSD. Unlike much of the material he's released under the alias, which draws on dub, hip-hop and dubstep for inspiration, this seven-inch recalls the early days of the "Bristol sound", where Smith and Ray Mighty were responsible for producing tons of classic street soul-informed fare. Denise Morgan delivers a superbly soulful, glassy-eyed rendition of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' atop an attractive, turn-of-the-90s style street soul beat rich in classic hip-hop breaks, fluid piano and stirring synth strings. The accompanying 'Let's Dub Together' version, a more stripped-back and sub-heavy affair rich in reverb-laden vocal snippets, is equally as inspired.

Review: Legendary UK dub pioneers Alpha & Omega have put out several classic cuts that are now hugely sought after. Their timeless reggae album Overstanding from back in 1991 is one of them and they followed it up just a year later with Almighty Jah alongside Dub Judah. Review: Clash, first released in 1977, was one of a series of definitive reggae albums to highlight the eminence of the soundclash, in which two reggae or dancehall crews rig up opposing soundsystems in a face-to-face musical standoff. Fashioning this album after the competitive form, Dillinger's sparring partner in this case is 'Trinity' aka Wade Brammer, who was active during the 1970s and 80s. Trinity as Dillinger is best known for deejaying over reggae and dancehall numbers; Clash albums became very popular at the tail-end of the 1970s and into the next decade, with singers and deejays alike competing for status, track by track.

Review: For the fifth volume of The Encyclopedia of Civilizations, Abstrakce's collection of split LPs - in which selected artists offer insight into fascinating ancient cultures - hears them focus this time on the enigmatic Babylon, visited by two of the label's favourite electronic bands currently active. Berlin-based duo Driftmachine take us on a journey between the ancient cities of Akkad, Uruk and Ashur. Bringing together astonishing electronics with a superb and precise sound - floating somewhere between modular ambient, leftfield, abstract dub - every detail has been carefully crafted to produce a complex architecture. Unconventional tribal rhythms recall obscure rituals, while warm, dynamic pulses contract and expand, interacting on their journey along the sandy roads of the Mesopotamian basin. Afterwards, Glasgow-based project Komodo Kolektif delves into the Babylonian vision of magic through the figures of the Kassaptu (witches and wizards), and the use of Mandragora. A blend of both tribal primitivism and a futuristic vision is provided by their vast arsenal of vintage synths and effects units, Eastern metallophones and traditional hand percussion. This is deep, psychedelic electronics that capture the spirit of ancient Babylonian sacred ceremonies and their vision of the cosmos.

Review: The ninth album from Barry Ashworth's Dub Pistols crew sees them teaming up with an amazing array of guests, ranging from Lindy Layton of Beats International fame, to rave heroes Ragga Twins and breakbeaters Freesylers, complete with UK reggae MC Top Cat in tow. The sound is the usual genre-bending combination of reggae and dub fused with punk, two tone ska, jungle, breaks and a whole lot more. No huge surprise the, but there's no denying it sounds as fresh as ever here, if not fresher.

Review: The latest missive on Mad Professor's long-running Ariwa Sounds imprint comes courtesy of Dubheart, a seven-piece roots reggae band who have already self-released a number of rock solid albums. It's something of a collaborative affair, with the South West-based outfit recording - and re-recording - a swathe of their own riddims and those from classic Ariwa cuts with the help of producer Mad Professor and his sons Joe and Kamal. The result is a fresh dub album with a classic Ariwa feel - think bold, sub-heavy basslines, echoing keyboard parts, delay-laden percussion hits and guitar parts that drift back and forth across the soundspace. If you're a fan of Mad Professor's work - and let's face it, who isn't - you'll love it.
