Review: The Roots Unity label is in a real purple patch right now and has multiple 7"s dropping in quick succession. The one here is part of a slew of four drops from the Dutch label and it features esteemed roots talent, Bunnington Judah, with the in-house production team. 'Jah Children Must Rise' is organic island music with wooden, tumbling percussion and natty chords. The drums have fleshy bass and plenty of swagger next to the hypnotic flute leads. The vocals from Judah are the impassioned icing on the delicious cake. Flip it over and as always the Roots Unity crew serve up a bottomlessly deep dub version.

Review: Lifelong reggae fans, vinyl lovers and frequent Juno readers will be familiar with Crystal D's Reggae Disco mix series. It was a 70s thing where artists served up their own unique reggae versions of Christmas classics and now we get volume 17 of the Christmas Songbook. This one comes on 12" in hand-stamped sleeve and the A-side is an 11+ minute collection of tunes from Derrick Harriott & The Tamlins & Joy White & Reasons & U-Brown with natty chords, sleigh bells and choral reggae vocals. What a mix. In authentic reggae fashion, the flip side is a dub of the whole lot by The Chariot Riders.

Review: There is an awful lot of heat packed into this 10" from Room In The Sky, with six new tracks backed by the in-house Room In The Sky Riddim Force on an original called 'Fletchers Land'. Jah Walton aka Joseph Cotton opens up with 'Ganja Man' which pays homage to the weed smokers over fat drums. Goody Gap's 'I Smoke Weed' is another ode to the magical green herb and Michael 'Megahbass' Fletcher then steps up with a more stripped back and percussive dub. Ras Ranger, Ed Cubitt & Kodjovi Kush then feature on a trio of B-side gems.

Review: Tony Ruffcutt is a legend in the reggae scene and has been since the 70s. The label named after him has now got the right to recut a classic from that era, 'Love And Only Love' by Fred Locks. The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

Review: Freddie McKay's classic rocksteady track 'Going' hears a reissue on Jamaican Recordings, the very same label that first released in back in 2004. A sad rumination on death and freedom, we hear McKay croon through a ghostly spring reverb and an sprightly rhythm section, as he considers the "moon in the sky" and "the birds in the trees" as vessels for his own emancipation. So too comes the rare instrumental version on the B-side, though this reissue skips the original's shared side with Ronnie Davis, focusing solely on McKay.

Review: Randy's Vintage Dub Selection originally came up as a collection of dub versions of classic reggae cuts from the legendary Randy's Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica. The likes of King Tubby, Errol Thompson, Lee Perry, you name it, all recorded there, making it a veritable treasure-trove of dub history. Now comes a new 7" paying tribute to the Studio via the Randy's-adjacent Gary Hall-run label - Jamaican Recordings. The A-side here is a rare dub cut to 'Natty Dread Ah No Mickey Mouse', which was itself a cut to 'Natty Dread Won't Get A Witness', over the classic Bangarang rhythm. Meanwhile, the B spans two versions: 'Dub Feeling', recorded in 1969 and a dub of Slim Smith's 'This Feeling', and 'It's A Dubbing Lie', which reworks Ernest Wilson's 'It's No Lie', also from the very same year.

Review: 'Cuss Cuss' comes all the way from 1960 and is the most celebrated and well known tune from the man born Lloyd Altamont Thomas Robinson. He was a dancehall don who died a decade ago but not before releasing some 50 odd singles and EPs. 'Cuss Cuss' is devastatingly short and deals - a dark vibe pervades the deeply burrowed bass and the vocals are the sound of him making a plea for bad vibes to leave his life. On the flip side here is a version that is more lo-fi, stripped back and deep - as if playing from the room next door, almost.

Review: This new 7" finds Fruits Records serving up the first new taster single from a forthcoming new album by Root Architects. It features assistance from the great Ernest Ranglin and Tyrone Downie and in original form 'Memories Of Old' is a laid back reggae roller with some superb acoustic guitar bringing hints of Spanish sunshine to the percolating, fat-bottomed bass. The melodies are conversational and interact perfectly with the organ chords, while on the flip the version is more heady and paired back as well as being doused in reverb.

Review: There's a pleasing "going back to his roots" feel about this release from Bristol luminary Rob Smith AKA RSD. Unlike much of the material he's released under the alias, which draws on dub, hip-hop and dubstep for inspiration, this seven-inch recalls the early days of the "Bristol sound", where Smith and Ray Mighty were responsible for producing tons of classic street soul-informed fare. Denise Morgan delivers a superbly soulful, glassy-eyed rendition of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' atop an attractive, turn-of-the-90s style street soul beat rich in classic hip-hop breaks, fluid piano and stirring synth strings. The accompanying 'Let's Dub Together' version, a more stripped-back and sub-heavy affair rich in reverb-laden vocal snippets, is equally as inspired.

Review: Horning Sounds is fast approaching 50 releases and is doing so with some classic roots and lover's rock from Ruddy Symbol, who are also behind that landmark 50th. This new reissue is of their classic mid-eighties sounds, namely 'A So The System Work'. It's as laid back and loved up as this stuff comes - the loosely picked guitars, the oh-so-sweet falsetto vocals and the gentle chords all serve to melt your soul. Review: Ruffy & Tuffy were teenage twins when they dropped this one back in 1982. It might be one of the first recorded uses of a vocoder in reggae too as they served up their seriously heavyweight low ends and drenched them in synths in a rub-a-dub style. 'If The 3rd World War Is A Must' is one of only a few tunes this pair dropped and although they weren't prolific, they were influential. They were also in a film, Ted Bafaloukos' iconic 1978 Rockers, in which the twins are sparring in red Pony tracksuits. They were proud Rastafarians who remained symbols of defiance.

Owing to the perfectionism and inscrutability of "self-releasing" artists, this is an instantly memorable, stunningly-produced reggae song, centring on the theme of collective Black pride. Review: Ronnie Lion is one half of Ambient Warrior and this is his debut solo outing. It finds him paying homage to Spanish Town, which is the capital of St Catherine in Jamaica and that is apparent from the off with its lush Spanish guitar notes fluttering over the face of the dubbed-out low ends and shiny digital chords. Lead guitarist Sean Wilkinson pays plenty of the guitar and the rhythm section has Ronnie himself on bass while Horseman is on drums to bring a heavy foundation. Up to the intricate and memorable hooks add the colour and charm and elements of Bossa Nova and Flamenco guitar also help add extra layers to this fine debut.

Review: This classic set from the one and only The Rootsman takes us back to 1999 but has been newly edited and reimagined for this release on Partial. It was originally released on the Third Eye Music Label in 1999 and still hits hard today. There are jungle overtones to the opener 'We Come Rough' which brings the energy to kick off before things sink into a much more heady and psyched-out dub on 'Exodus'. 'To The Foundation' has a jazzy broken beat energy to it and 'Murder On The Orient Express' brings prance percussion and laid-back rhythms. 'Berber Bashment' is the standout on the B-side with its weird and wonderful vocal effects.

Review: The late great Muslimgauze has one of the most unique sounds in electronic music, even now, many year son. His fusion of the electronic and the ethnic, the experimental and the noisy is in a class of one. Return To The City Of Djinn came first back in 1999 and is the seance of two collabs between John Bolloten aka The Rootsman and Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze. It is a mash up of The Rootsman's Into The Light and 52 Days to Timbuktu albums with added Arab cultural references from Jones. There are cut up loops, glassy effects, dub drums and well rod vocal fragments that make for an atmospheric sound track to a stroll through a busy Eastern city.
