Review: The legendary Iration Steppas reissue their second studio album Dubz From De Higher Regionz which is originally from 2004. Active for a quarter of a century now, the Leeds institutions pioneered a digital dub sound that transitioned the scene out of the militant jah stepper period into the future. This album perfectly embodies that with its sleek drums and contemporary studio effects, clean bass sounds and sheet metal hits. Plenty of hefty dubs make it a timeless collection and the inlay includes full discography and liner notes.

UV Dub
UV Dub (7")
Cat: MYSTB 003. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Points (4:20)
  2. UV Dub (4:56)
Review: The Mystery Booms crew have put together a limited run of what they call 'modern weird rhythms' from the Prince Stoner. 'Points' is filled with intrigue - its stuttering drums and bass lurching from one point to the next while heavily treated vocals appear and disappear like ghostly apparitions in the dark. It's warm and inviting but unsettling at the same time. On the flip, 'UV Dub' has a killer bassline waaaay down low, then icy hi hats up top and is all finished off with warped, mind melting pads. These are two fresh, killer beats for sure, however you want to categorise them.

Review: It seems like almost every single new week brings with it a new album from dub icon Lee "Scratch" Perry. And who are we to complain, because rarely does the quality drop when it comes to this weed loving, purple-bearded and mystic musical maestro. This time out we are treated to a special, heavyweight Record Store Day pressing of his To Drive The Dub Starship Through The Horror Zone album made with Daniel Boyle. It's a record with its head in the cosmos, with oodles of reverb making cavernous universes in which you float next to mutterings for the man himself. Made exclusively on 70's and 80's analogue equipment and with Lee's signature Black Ark sound, this is another classic in his cannon.

Hiss (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 80. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Hiss (4:18)
  2. Palms (4:10)
Review: ZAMZAM goes bang bang once again as the dutty dubstep label hits release number 80. Cause keeps it utterly filthy on the a-side with 'Hiss,' a heavyweight nobler with a menacing bassline that's so fat it wiggles as it walks. Crashing hits and sci-fi synth motifs make this a most astral crawler. 'Palms' has whirring synths and a bassline curried oceans below. Freaky vocal sounds are haunting and dark and add tension to the track as it prowls along through an utter wasteland. Atmospheric stuff, to be sure.

Raiders Of The Lost Dub (180 gram audiophile vinyl LP)
Cat: MOVLP 2770. Rel: 24 Sep 20

  8. Black Uhuru - "Convoy Hijack" (4:18)
  9. Junior Delgado - "Bazooka Blast" (4:19)
  10. Black Uhuru - "Fire & Brimstone" (4:37)
Review: This is a seriously high quality collection of dub that takes you on a real adventure. Ijahman's 'Whip That Tarantula' has a wonderful weird and wispy lead motif that trips you out while the snaking horns lead you into mischief. Burning Spear slows things down to crawl with his organic percussion and earthy ridders, and The Viceroys trap you in a wonderful world of echo on the stuttering and swaggering 'The Dub Of Gold.' Of the multiple Black Uhuru tracks included, the last one 'Fire & Brimstone' and might be the best with its stark hits and mischievous moods.

  6. Better Things (Moving dub) (5:52)
  7. Spying Glass (I Spy) (5:16)
  8. Heat Miser (Backward Sucking) (6:12)
Review: Given Massive Attack's background, it was almost inevitable that they'd release a dub overhaul of one of their albums at one point. That time came in 1995, when British sound system legend Mad Professor - responsible for some of the greatest UK-made dub records of all time - put his distinctive twist on Protection. 21 years on, the set still sounds sublime: a radical translation that frequently bares only a passing resemblance to the Bristol band's original. It's packed with highlights, from the spaced-out, dub-house rework of "Spying Glass" ("I Spy"), to the ricocheting percussion hits and twinkling pianos of "Weather Storm (Cool Monsoon)", and creepy, delay-laden string surges of "Eternal Feedback (Sly)".

  1. For The Love Of Money (4:05)
  2. For The Love Of Money (disco dub) (4:14)
Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

My Jamaican Dub

  1. My Jamaican Dub (2:34)
  2. The Healer (2:55)
Review: The always excellently go slow and tropical sounds of Big Crown now look to Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band for covers of two classics. Up first is Grace Jones' nightclub classic "My Jamaican Guy" while on the flip is Erykah Badu's tribute to the legendary J Dilla, "The Healer". Both retain the essence of the original but come with loose hand claps, shimmering steel drums that bring coastal breezes, sand and sun into the equation and leave you laying horizontal. These are fine interpretations of top notch source material.

  16. Fullness (5:30)
  17. Special Mix (3:07)
Review: By the time they recorded "Songs of Praise" in 1990, African Head Charge had gone from being an Adrian Sherwood solo project to a fully-fledged band helmed by percussionist Bonjo Ivabinghi Noah. Here reissued to mark the album's 20th birthday, the set remains arguably the group's greatest single work. While rooted in the twin attractions of heavy dub and dense African percussion, the album makes extensive use of a dizzying array of influences, from gospel, steppers reggae and yacht rock, to traditional Arabic music, blues, disco, religious chants and even industrial music. This edition features a handful of decent bonus tracks, but they're unnecessary: the original album is little less than a masterpiece and should reside in every discerning listener's record collection.

  1. Congo Shuffle (version) (7:07)
  2. Invisible Guest (6:54)
  3. Paralyzed Dub (2:32)
Review: UK dub techno maestro Steve O'Sullivan is back with another payload of deep immersion heaters under his Bluetrain guise, this time on the Future Primitive label. There's a deadly restraint at work on "Congo Shuffle", where the elements get reduced to needlepoint precision and the low end rhythm section stalks with purpose. "Invisible Guest" takes things in an explicitly dubwise direction, channelling serious Rhythm & Sound vibes for an immaculate head-nodder, before "Paralyzed Dub" slows down further into an end of the line skank for the weary to find solace in - masterful movements in the echo chamber from start to finish.

Review: Second time round for Moods of Pablo, a collection of classic cuts from reggae's premier Melodica player that first appeared in stores 20 years ago. The first half of the collection features tracks recorded by Pablo under the watchful eye of Bunny 'Striker' Lee at the King Tubby's studio, with the second half showcasing weighty dubs of Pablo's work by Tubby himself. Featuring many classic Tubby and Lee riddims, the collected cuts are notably weighty and groovy, with Pablo's trademark delay-laden Melodica motifs and sauntering solos rising above deep basslines, classic dub drums, sun-kissed guitars and tight piano stabs.

Review: This fantastic inaugural EP on Dende Sound finds the crew work together with MC Trooper for the first time. His red hot lyrical fire torches Bambaman's powerful riddims and aches to be played cloud on a serious sound system. The collaboration came together during many late night sessions in Brighton and has a positive, uplifting vibe of the sort we all need right now. The flip finds Bambaman serving up a more serious and militant dub style with plenty of echoes of classic melodica roots. 'Training Day' then rounds out the package with some future classic sounds in both original and dub format.

  8. Group Four (Security Forces dub) (8:07)
Review: Way back in 1998 when Massive Attack's career-defining "Mezzanine" was first released, legendary dub technician Mad Professor cooked up some radical reworking. They now get their first official release alongside dubs of two tracks that never actually made it onto the album - Metal Banshee: a dub version of "Superpredators" which was a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Metal Postcard", and "Wire", which was actually recorded for the film "Welcome to Sarajevo". Wild effects, plenty of knob twiddling and oodles of reverb define this freaky late night collection and mark another essential release in the catalogue of the already legendary Mad Professor.

Review: First released way back in 1976 and here appearing on wax for the first time in decades, Colombia Colly is the single greatest work of Jamaican toaster Pat Francis AKA Jah Lion. Francis was a talented mic man with a distinctive vocal style - a mix of gruff, patois-heavy proto-raps and scat style improvisations - but his recorded performances were rarely as incendiary as his performances at dances. It took producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry to get the best out of him, which he did and then some on Colombia Colly. The dub style backing tracks provided by Perry were amongst the best of his Black Ark period and made extensive use of re-played and re-framed riddims previously heard on his productions for the likes of Max Romeo, the Heptones and Junior Murvin.

Orbit Dub (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 76. Rel: 13 Feb 20
  1. Orbit Dub (4:11)
  2. Theory Dub (4:14)
Review: Since launching in 2014, Portland's ZamZam Sounds imprint has offered up a string of beautifully packaged seven-inch singles from a mixture of big hitters and rising stars from the global bass music scene. Their latest missive comes from Dayzero, a Japanese dubstep producer best known for his outings on Wheel & Deal, Sentry and, most recently, Vomitspit. The two tracks here are weighty, intergalactic and otherworldly, mixing dub style rhythms with the kind of angular, razor-sharp sub-bass motifs more often associated with dancefloor dubstep. Both cuts are quality, though it's rolling A-side "Orbit Dub" - all lolloping dub beats, wobble bass, metallic effects and paranoid aural textures - that really stands out.

Review: Pressure Sounds' latest release takes us back to 1976 and "Wall Of Jerusalem", a soulful reggae album by The Prophets that included production from both Yabby You (the band's lynchpin and lead vocalist) and dub mixer King Tubby. The album is something of a roots classic, with Yabby You's seductive, soul-fired vocal numbers being joined by delay-laden heavy dub revisions by King Tubby. You'll find the original set on LP 1, with the second being dedicated to alternate versions, previously unreleased tracks recorded in the same period, and alternate dubs that have lain dormant in Yabby You's archives for the best part of 40 years.

Review: Sanctuary's Trojan Records theme compilations, focusing on some aspect of the legendary reggae imprint's vast discography, have always offered great introductions to various sub-genres and historical movements. This latest volume is no exception. Over the course of two CDs, it delivers a perfect introduction to the "roots" sound via stone cold classics from Johnny Clarke, Junior Byles ("Curly Locks", based on the "Police & Thieves" riddim), Burning Spear, The Congas, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Junior Murvin (the superb "Roots Train Number One"), Max Romeo (the peerless "Chase The Devil") and Lee 'Scratch' Perry ("Dreadlocks in Moonlight"). Serious reggae heads will no doubt already own much of the material, but for newcomers this should be an essential purchase.

Review: Some five years after their last full-length hit stores, Fat Freddy's Drop has finally got round to recording a new album. Entitled "Special Edition", it's set to be released in two parts. Part one (the second will follow later in the year) begins with the slow and steady soulful skank of "Kamo Kamo", before the more digital-sounding goodness of "OneFourteen" sees them wisely pushing honeyed vocalist Joe Dukie to the fore. More jazzy reggae warmth follows via "Raleigh Twenty", while "Special Edition" is a confirmed dancefloor workout - think disco-reggae - which mixes rapped and sung vocals. There's a surprising nod to house music on the hypnotic and synth-laden "Trickle Down", while "Six-Eight (Instrumental)" is Fat Freddy's take on dancehall.

Review: Mysterious Canadian dub abstractionists Seekersinternational will always keep you guessing - such is their provocative charm whether stirring up trouble on Bokeh Versions, Boomarm Nation or ICS Library. Now they make a welcome surprise drop on Max D's Future Times label, and sound right at home amongst the label's penchant for bizarro genre-agnostic mutations. There's soul, audacious sound design and luscious synths aplenty - all hallmarks of other FT releases. Of course there's a strong bedrock of Jamaican music culture informing everything, but once again the crew have delivered something distinct from their previous work. No one does it quite like Seekers, not even Seekers themselves.

Review: 12th Isle's latest must-check chunk of entertaining experimentalism comes from Lo Kindre, whose dub-wise 2017 debut on Optimo Music was arguably one of that year's most overlooked EPs. "Chlorophytum", the producer's first solo missive since then, is another lo-fi electronic dub treat. Of course, it's not all gentle bass-heavy rhythms, endless delay trails and cute electronic melodies - closing cut "For Sleep" is a buzzing electronic raga, for example - but it's on these bass-heavy excursions that Lo Kindre most frequently hits the spot. Highlights include the extraordinarily sub-heavy shuffle of "Sounder", the ambient dub wooziness of "Aibell" and the creepy alien-dub oddness of "No Hiding".

Review: Melodica maestro Augustus Pablo released a number of influential albums during a golden period in the 1970s, though little quite as ground-breaking and far-sighted as 1976's "King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown". Mixed by King Tubby, it was one of the first great dub albums and is still one of the finest examples of the stripped-back, rhythm-heavy style around. If you don't already own a copy, we'd heartily recommend picking up this reissue. Musically, the tracks sound as warm, weighty and spacious as ever - all heavy Robbie Shakespear/Family Man Barrett bass, idiosyncratic drumming and killer melodica/Clavinet/organ action from Pablo - while the screen-printed artwork is a delight.

Review: Napoli producer Enrico Fierro AKA Milord may not yet be quite as well known as fellow city dwellers New Guinea, but he shares the same love of cosmic synthesizer sounds, atmospheric electronics and lo-fi drum machines. "Meta/Music", his first EP for Pinchy & Friends, inhabits a similar sonic space to the Early Sounds Recordings regulars, too - or at least the synth-fuelled jazz-funk-meets-Balearic cuts "The Kemetist", "Infinite Balance" and the sparse, dubbed-out bliss of "Meta Music" do (incidentally, all three feature copious amounts of dub style delays on the drum hits, which is no bad thing). Best of all though is opener "Transcendental Experience", a slow-burning fusion of new age melodies, intergalactic electronics and minimalist drums that's worth the admission price on its own.

Cat: OHB 1204. Rel: 08 Oct 19
  1. Melody Roots (4:42)
  2. Etched (3:35)
Review: Nick Raphael and Steve Gilder were Sound Iration and in 1990 they turned out this essential bit of early roots. It was initially super limited with just 350 copies with the b-side left totally blank. Long out of print and hard to find, it now gets a crisp reissue on Old Hard Bread and still gets you where it matters: The title track has a snaking lead harmonica line that wanders to and fro and takes you with it while tumbling drums and percolating synths ripple out into infinity. B side "Etched" is a more echoey and spaced out, fatter and deeper cut.
