Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Patrick Brian's "Twelve77" kicks off on a sci-fi instrumental grime vibe, all sirens and star-gazing, Fish gets busy on a sweet two-step vibe with a well-known vocal sample and mischievous bass oscillations while MOREOFUS smelts downs our souls with the late night trap/dubstep hybrid "Lord". We wrap up with wave wonderment as Liquid Ritual's LTHL closes the EP with a deep breeze stepper that's dense in atmospheres but light in its rolling drums. Acutely on-point.

Review: Fantastic Mr Fox is back on Black Acre with three new, original tracks on his "Sketches EP," which also includes a SBTRKT remix of the title track. Coined by some as clockwork garage, the music created by the undoubtedly talented Fantastic Mr Fox is often tinged with melancholic undertones and wrapped up in computer funk cuts - his Sketches EP is no different.
The young producer is a university student in Manchester. This EP was made on his computer in his room a few months ago. Although the noises themselves would allude to this, the clever arrangement and innovative rhythms on the release certainly would not. His aim was to make music that would sound as good on the dancefloor as they would on a bus. Opening with the title track, "Sketches" grumbling bass murmurs alongside kicks and shuffling drum patterns. The Nintendo sounding noises that waft over "Sketches" also make an appearance on "BrickAbrac." Only this time, they are accompanied by a more thumping 4/4 beat and a warbling sub bass that complements the computer noises perfectly.
"If I" is certainly the most soulful of the tracks, taking on a futuristic twist on soul infused garage music. The easiest track of the four to listen to, this is likely to be as popular amongst old fans of the scene as it is with the new ones. The last track on the EP is SBTRKT's remix of "Sketches." The track is reduced to its shell and then rebuilt with Detroit style beats and a huge drop which explodes with massive drums, making this the real dancefloor killer of the pack.

Review: Having announced this in September 2015, San Diego's Banana Stand South have eked out a dangerously long lead time on delivery on this. But, as those who've been pensively waiting will attest, the wait is worth it: Fill Spectre's "Battle For Spice" shakes with both a funky percussion and a devilish detuned bassline. Complete with a peppering of surprises and twists in the tales, this battle is of war-like proportions. Krome's "Distinct Motive" is slightly more conventional with its halftime beat but the crying bass groans that spiral further and further into paranoid chaos create a unique character. Especially when the added sub comes in at the last minute. Freaky.

Review: Last year Burial and the Bug joined forces as Flame 1, delivering an in-demand EP on the latter's Pressure label featuring two sizable slabs of industrial strength soundsystem science. Here they return as Flame 2, once again offering up a pair of weighty dancefloor excursions. A-side "Dive" is a loud and claustrophobic affair, as the duo wraps dystopian dub bass and sparse, mutilated post-drill rhythms in layers of apocalyptic aural textures and mind-altering dub techno style processed noise. Flipside "Rain" is arguably more suitable for dancefloor plays and sees the esteemed twosome combine pulverizing sub-bass heaviness with dancehall style drums that come smothered in mind-melting effects and paranoia-inducing aural smoke.

Review: Big tune alert! Navy Cut main man Jack Sparrow gets his hands on "Welcome To London", one of the standout cuts from Roll Deep founder Flowdan's 2019 album "Full Metal Jacket", and the results are as weighty and wicked as you'd expect. His A-side vocal version is particularly potent, with the former Tectonic artist placing Flowdan's typically tight, on-point raps over a deep dubstep rhythm rich in snappy snares, metallic sounds, bursts of more organic-sounding percussion, razor-sharp stabs and a rolling, movement-packed bassline. The accompanying instrumental revision, which is stripped of nearly all of Flowdan's vocals, is equally as impressive, if only for Sparrow's subtle use of dubbed-out background vocal textures.

Review: Feeling like there's not enough Francais in your life? You're not alone, Frenchless feel that vibe too. But that's literally all we know about this mystery duo at this minute. All we have are these heavy pressure sounds, but it's more than enough to go on for now... '3C 273' takes us to the stars on a rocket of absurdly dense kicks, a menu of percussive sounds and textures and haunting eastern pipes. 'Grunks' meanwhile takes us much deeper into their anonymous French-dry hearts with a lolloping, woozy system melter where the kicks once again take the lead and every vibey element duly follows. Review: Ahead of a debut long player, Frenchman Fulgeance delivers a third EP of concentric beatdown bliss for Musique Large. Housed in blingest pink cover art ever seen at the Juno offices, The Glamoure EP fully demonstrates Fulgeance's penchant for incorporating the sounds of past masters such as J Dilla and Bernanrd Febvre to his own unique beat pattern, the end result being something chop heavy, rich in analogue flavour and nod inducing basslines. The half step crunch of the title track wouldn't look out of place on a Modeselektion release, whilst "Analove" delights with its kaleidoscopic swirls of blissed synth lines diced with rising analogue bass farts. The flipside loosed drum drama of "Vengeance" is complemented by two remixes. The first from DC Recordings artiste Kelpe enlists sometime Rustie rappers 215TFK to spit vocal heat over a minimalist beat stutter propelled by brilliant low end bass flutters. LOAF trioGable add another layer to the circle of hype surrounding them with the acoustics meet ADD beat brilliance of their remix of "Rubiscubed".

Review: Retribution Recordings has a heavy one on its hands here as Flowdan rocks up to drop some grime badness over KRSLD's beats. It's a menacing sound, filled with late night chills and plenty of bass-driven dread. The lurching sub, the foreboding vocals about "zero tolerance" and "you're dead boy", clacking hits and oodles of reverb all mark this out a real stepper and a classic development of the rich UK continuum sound. Flip it over for an even more stark and darkly futuristic instrumental take.

Review: UK techno veterans Mark Broom and James Ruskin first joined forces under The Fear Ratio alias back in 2011, delivering the inventive - and hugely enjoyable - IDM-meets-techno full-length, Light Box. Here they join forces once more for a follow-up that gleefully explores similar sonic territory, whilst throwing a few more influences - most notably experimental hip-hop and vintage electro - into the pot for good measure. The result is a hugely entertaining album that naturally doffs a cap to Skam Records' dystopian roots, as well as the heavyweight soundsystem throb of dubstep, the hypnotism of dub techno, and the crackling electronic wizardry of Autechre.
