Tempa Allstars Vol 8
Cat: TEMPA 104. Rel: 30 Dec 15
Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

CLZ - "Haunt" (4:14)
Kanomotis - "Watch Yah Steppa" (VIP) (3:18)
Rawland & Dubdiggerz - "Madness" (4:42)
Flo & Gisaza - "Northern Technique" (3:38)
Review: Slovenian dubstep dons DubDiggerz curate the new collection for their "Chapter" series with this quartet of glorious gloom. CLZ returns to the label with "Haunt", a sludgy number that sucks you in like sinking sand. It's followed by a killer VIP of "Watch Yah Steppa" where a spicy little sample is added to the mix for extra hype. Flip for "Madness" as DubDiggerz bring Rawland into the fold with a tense workout that's prone to sudden textural twists and boasts stacks of space between the percussion. Finally Flo & Gisaza close the EP with a moody marching piece that rumbles ominously building up to big waves of eastern mysticism. Depend on DeepEnd.

Review: Welcome to Ridley Road, home of the vagabonds at new label Sub Merchants. You might not leave with all your belongings intact. Hell, you might not leave with some limbs intact. But just listen to these beats and you know a good time is guaranteed. Distinct Motive, Fearless Dread, Hella and Logan all on board with a few tunes apiece, vibes range from trippy dubstep to slinky grime. Highlights include the tension and brilliantly tamed wobbles on 'Therapy', the roughhouse two-step slammage of 'Light 'Em' and Logan's fat patter on the bubbly vocal 'Chattings.' Light em up!

Loveless
Tungsten (feat Hodge)
Review: Marking the emergence of another fresh talent in the bustling Bristolian scene, Idle Hands present the bass-laden, icy talents of Facta to the world. "Loveless" carries the torch from the finest stripped-down dubstep standards and applies it to the slower tempos of today, with a cheeky line in square wave bass thrown in for good measure to make for a cool tempered, deceptively heavy cut. Local champ Hodge lends a hand on "Tungsten", which finds a more peppy set of drums ticking away over dynamic flourishes of bass and samples with some wonderfully haunting refrains woven in to break up the mechanismo.

Montpelier
Kobra
Upsetter
Review: Originally released in October 2013, Facta's powerful "Montpelier" EP enjoys a much-needed repress on 180g. Truly unique, it still sounds like it was cooked up tomorrow: the title track is a chugging 4/4 hurter that takes the house formula, chews it up and spits it back with venomous mischief, "Kobra" is a steppy jam where beats fly upside your head sharply and eastern instrumentation soften the blow. Finally "Upsetter" leaves us sedated in an authentic dub coma while strategic breakbeats wisp and waft just out of reach. Badimup are killing it. And that's a Facta.

Peach Bits Vol 5
Cat: WPR 020. Rel: 26 Apr 17
Fallow & Alex Compton - "String Assassin" (3:49)
Kaido - "Kennedy Bridge" (4:27)
Zha - "Without" (3:47)
Nakes - "Moksha" (4:02)
Review: White Peach's admirable Peach Bits series, which draws together previously unreleased gems from the label's growing roster of artists, has reached its fifth volume. While previous volumes have largely aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this edition is more eclectic in outlook. Compare, for example, the paranoid, exotic darkness of Kaido's deep dubstep rattler "Kennedy Bridge" and the Eastern mysticism - via the Spanish Riviera - of Zha's "Without", which pairs gentle dubstep rhythms with lilting Japanese melody lines and flamenco guitar flourishes. Or, for that matter, the drowsy, post-rock-meets-dubstep haze of Fallow and Alex Compton's "String Assassin", and the blissfully exotic, almost Balearic melodies of Nakes' thrillingly positive dubstep shuffler "Moksha".

Straight & Arrow (original)
Straight & Arrow (Mike Q & Divoli S'vere remix)
Straight & Arrow (Four Tet remix)
Review: On the basis of the material FaltyDL has released with Ninja Tune thus far, his forthcoming third album Hardcourage should rank as one of the more interesting albums to surface in the first quarter of next year. Following the excellent throwback styles of "Hardcourage", the New Yorker showcases his seemingly endless palette of styles with "Straight & Narrow", a wonderfully colourful and vivid sounding production. Dominated by some deft vocal chopping, it's the way these cooing elements intertwine with the beguiling synth noodling and crisp almost handclap style beats that resonates deeply. Ballroom duo Mike Q and Divoli S'vere naturally latch onto the most obvious elements in the vocals and clapped beats, laying them atop a breathlessly frenetic rhythmic mainframe, while Four Tet hogs the flip with a dewy eyed, slowly percolating seven minute remix that will tug at the heart strings of his legion of fans.

Review: Farful & Mtwn made a big oppression with their first EP Collisions. Now they follow it up on a mission to "explore the use of modular synths, and also hardware, in more depth." As such the pair set up their gear and set to work, crafted hours of jams and passing them back and forth between their bases in Liege and London, then polishing them up into he tunes we have presented here. It makes fora record filled with club energy, but experimental edge, and goes from half time steppers to make you sweat to slower, more seductive passages of last night, bass driven sound.

Missing Link (4:40)
Review: For the latest sub-heavy missive on his fast-rising Navy Cut label, Jack Sparrow has turned to his friend in bass, Fiend - and the shadowy producer has duly delivered. The real killer - to our ears, at least - is A-side "Jah Hear Me", an ultra-deep affair where reggae vocal samples echo across the soundscape and creepy ambient chords slowly pulse above a hushed rhythm track and rubling, super-low sub-bass. It's one that we could see appealing just as much to ambient astronaughts and deep dubstep heads. Over on side B, "Missing Link" offers up a sturdier rhythm, heavier bass, alien effects and a serious deep space atmosphere.

Review: Ireland isn't the first place you'd think of when it comes to sturdy soundsystem dub flavours, but Cian Finn is quickly changing this perception with some deep, driving conscious mic craft. It's clear his years as front man for Irish festival faves Intinn have paid off as we're treated to a series of versions, each one paying attention to a different aspect of dub. Highlights include the sonorous hollow tones of Radikal Guru's version of "Ireland Dub" and the raw stomp of Alpha Steppa's "9 Years Dub". Serious soundsystem material!

Nobody VIP
Review: This one's been bubbling since spring 2014 with the final copies surfacing for one last stark, dark hoorah before Visceral Vibrations get busy with their second release. Writhing in the lonely no man's land between deep dub and garage, both cuts strut with fractured, subverted two-steps as dense foggy pads and ghostly vocal textures wrap themselves needily around the beats. Cop this while you can.

Rain (3:41)
Review: Last year Burial and the Bug joined forces as Flame 1, delivering an in-demand EP on the latter's Pressure label featuring two sizable slabs of industrial strength soundsystem science. Here they return as Flame 2, once again offering up a pair of weighty dancefloor excursions. A-side "Dive" is a loud and claustrophobic affair, as the duo wraps dystopian dub bass and sparse, mutilated post-drill rhythms in layers of apocalyptic aural textures and mind-altering dub techno style processed noise. Flipside "Rain" is arguably more suitable for dancefloor plays and sees the esteemed twosome combine pulverizing sub-bass heaviness with dancehall style drums that come smothered in mind-melting effects and paranoia-inducing aural smoke.

Review: Finally. More presses of the killer 002 from Run Outs land and it's every bit as chilling as it was when they first teased us with it. "Unstable" is a meditative shimmering brew, unhurried and pace-setting while "Monolith" flips the vibe for something a little more warped and weird. Linking with mysterious producer Gisaza, they add a grumbling bassline, creepy arpeggios and sudden switches under a hazy cosmic sheen. Powerful stuff. You'd be wise to snap up on this before they Run Out again (not sorry).

Welcome To London (J Sparrow remix) (4:27)
Welcome To London (J Sparrow remix - instrumental) (4:28)
Review: Big tune alert! Navy Cut main man Jack Sparrow gets his hands on "Welcome To London", one of the standout cuts from Roll Deep founder Flowdan's 2019 album "Full Metal Jacket", and the results are as weighty and wicked as you'd expect. His A-side vocal version is particularly potent, with the former Tectonic artist placing Flowdan's typically tight, on-point raps over a deep dubstep rhythm rich in snappy snares, metallic sounds, bursts of more organic-sounding percussion, razor-sharp stabs and a rolling, movement-packed bassline. The accompanying instrumental revision, which is stripped of nearly all of Flowdan's vocals, is equally as impressive, if only for Sparrow's subtle use of dubbed-out background vocal textures.

Sleepless (original mix)
Sleepless (Shlohmo remix)
Sleepless (Midland dub)
Review: Undoubtedly one of the most successful Australian operations of recent times, Future Classic have shown a willingness to step beyond the realm of disco-flecked house with their investment in the creative talents of Flume. The sickeningly young Sydney based beatmaker first came to the fore with a contribution to Anna Lunoe's well received debut EP on the FC label earlier this year, and Sleepless precedes the release of a full debut album later this year. "Sleepless" is a confident debut, chopping out a woozy melange of luscious pads, pitch shifted vocals and dreamy synth patterns over a killer mid tempo head nodders beat. Oh and you can't go wrong with remixes from Midland and Shlomo can you?

Cargo (3:42)
Oculus Rift (3:48)
Review: Deep space dub laced with toxic levels of funk: Foamplate makes his official debut with three really refreshing twists on contemporary bass. With its faraway flutes, squid bass and heavily textured rim shots, "7.5" is so out-there and wonky, you could imagine Roots Manuva spitting on it with ease. "Cargo" ups the spacious ante even further as prominent drum elements echo and shimmer over a stealthy sub. "Oculus Rift" brings us back to the woodwind flavours but with more of an eastern twang and cosmic feel. Essential listening: Each cut sounds like nothing else around right now.

Kingsize (3:46)

All Talk (3:45)
Review: It's been a while since Foamy took us on a Plantpower trip but the wait is always worth it. Three tracks, all laced and wired with his unique off-kilter 140 funk, the tone is set by "Kingsize". Every bit as fat bottomed as its name suggests, there's a delightfully woozy off-beat feel running throughout. "2020" pushes us into next year with an energetic steppy twist. With strong UKG and UK funky feels, the bashy drums twist and turn around a bassline that's as foreboding as the future feels. Finally Mr Plate concludes with "All Talk". Understated and a precision balance of introspection and wriggly bass funk, don't be fooled by the title... It's actually all action. So should you be; every Plantpower release so far has completely sold out.

Review: The long-awaited "Nettle" has landed on his own Plantpower and it's not likely to hang around. An absolute slapper of a jam with a flabby bassline melting over the loosely baked drums, it thumps with such a simple but effective message. "Moose Fly" ain't no fading b-side either. A similarly lolloping, loopy cut but wrapped in a sci-fi sheen, it's another bullseye from the currently spotless Foamy one.

Review: Read over Foamplate's discography and it's like a who's who of premiere league underground bass imprints - Donga's Well Rounded, V.I.V.E.K's System, Sleeper's Crucial, Gully. Now with these high profile experiences to his name it's time to stamp the game with his own stable. Powerplant. If this launch release is to go by we're in for a treat. Both "Tabula" and "Deadly Habit" hum with that unique low-end elasticity Foamplate has made his name with. The former has a wry eastern twang to its melodic structure while the latter goes straight on a leftfield wonk march. As on-point and heavyweight as you'd expect.

Review: Despite announcing their retirement from the record label business earlier this year, it seems like Donga's Well Rounded operation has been coaxed back to the dark side (hooray!) with the arrival of a new endeavour Well Rounded Dubs. Never one to pander to trend, Well Rounded Dubs is concerned with music in the 140bpm / dubstep arena and launches with a 12" featuring some spacious steppers science from Foamplate and Corticyte. Up top local Brighton talent Foamplate makes an impressive vinyl debut with the swaggering sub anthem "Fuzz" (which features some nice field recordings of police sirens) whilst Gully Records affiliate opts for a stripped back approach on "Negative Space".
