Hol Dem (Compa remix) (5:10)
Hol Dem (instrumental version) (5:09)
Review: Version session: Nice Up! return to a summer bubbler from 2015 courtesy of Greece's Blend Mishkin and US's Roots Evolution by way of Compa's Manchester laboratory. Bussing up the groove into something much chunkier, rolling and heavyweight, Compa celebrates the elements of the original by bringing them into the fore over a deep rumbling groove that ploughs with modern dub momentum and opens into the vocal with precision timing. Naturally there's a dub to play with, too. Compa's on a roll right now.

Chad Dubz - "Pricks" (3:47)
Karnage & Dayzero - "No One" (3:45)
Guesswerk - "Persian Dub" (4:55)
Review: The cavendish crusaders are at it again. And this time they're rolling out the barrels with full V/A power. Chad Dubz opens with the provocatively titled "Pricks", all sludgy, swampy and twisted while Karnage & Dayzero up the energy with a dramatic symphonic loopy nod to the far east on "No One" while Guesswerk close the show with the long awaited "Persian Dub". On dub for a good couple of years, this gravel throated swinger has been doing the business for a select amount of DJs for some time. Now it's finally yours. From Bristol with fruit. Tuck in and be quick about it.

CLZ - "Haunt" (4:14)
Kanomotis - "Watch Yah Steppa" (VIP) (3:18)
Rawland & Dubdiggerz - "Madness" (4:42)
Flo & Gisaza - "Northern Technique" (3:38)
Review: Slovenian dubstep dons DubDiggerz curate the new collection for their "Chapter" series with this quartet of glorious gloom. CLZ returns to the label with "Haunt", a sludgy number that sucks you in like sinking sand. It's followed by a killer VIP of "Watch Yah Steppa" where a spicy little sample is added to the mix for extra hype. Flip for "Madness" as DubDiggerz bring Rawland into the fold with a tense workout that's prone to sudden textural twists and boasts stacks of space between the percussion. Finally Flo & Gisaza close the EP with a moody marching piece that rumbles ominously building up to big waves of eastern mysticism. Depend on DeepEnd.

D-Operation Drop & Geode - "Stronghold" (Perverse remix)
Review: With a tried and tested pedigree on labels such as Nomad, Tuba, Gamma Audio and Bacon Dubs, Italian substers D Operation Drop jump aboard emerging imprint Subaltern and bring Geode along for the ride. The results are unnervingly stark and slick. First up "Stronghold": rhythm-heavy, it builds itself around a hypnotic hook that ricochets back and forth with mesmerising effect. "Angkor" is a more percussive workout that enjoys layers of detailed drum work tightly woven with a dark funk DNA. For added grit jump on Perverse's remix where a guttural bassline lays in wait, ready to chew all suspecting dancefloors' faces off.

Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol I
Cat: SPVA 01. Rel: 05 Feb 14
Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Flo - "Unstable" (3:31)
Flo & Gisaza - "Monolith" (4:26)
Review: Finally. More presses of the killer 002 from Run Outs land and it's every bit as chilling as it was when they first teased us with it. "Unstable" is a meditative shimmering brew, unhurried and pace-setting while "Monolith" flips the vibe for something a little more warped and weird. Linking with mysterious producer Gisaza, they add a grumbling bassline, creepy arpeggios and sudden switches under a hazy cosmic sheen. Powerful stuff. You'd be wise to snap up on this before they Run Out again (not sorry).

Luv N Liv (Dub Gabriel None Shall Escape The dub mix)
Luv N Liv (Ming vs Subatomic Sound System remix)
Review: Highly limited and sonically stunning, this special 7" taken from Gabriel's Raggabass Resistance album, neither of these versions have seen the light of day before. And, according to the label, they're not likely to see it after this limited press. Gabriel's own version is authentic dub to the very core: rich organic instrumentation, a huge spacious bass and full emphasis on the groove. Dim Mak's Ming and Lee Perry's own Subatomic Sound System provide the contemporary version; squidgy, squelchy and full of surprises, it's a neat reminder of dubstep's innate funkiness. We're luvin' it!

Tut Tut Situation (3:18)
Love & Acid (3:13)
Review: This Turkish dubstep producer is on fire at the moment with appearances on Deep Medi and that awesome collaboration with Commodo and Kahn that got loads of people talking earlier in the year. He now serves up The tough bounce and wobble of "Tut Tut Situation" which is the street level sound of Istanbul representing good and proper; new bass frontiers explored on this one for sure. On the flip, we've got the gnarly underground anthem "Love & Acid" slithering then bashing away beneath layers of distortion and saturation on this savage, lo-fi groove.

Step On Lava (3:59)
Review: Blacklist hit release number five and it's the label bossman doing what he does best: taking us down dark paths on twisted, subverted adventures we didn't even know existed. "Space Horror" bundles us into the boot of a rusty old rocket and speeds down the backstreets of Omicron Persei 8 where the drums slouch along the slimy alleys and bassline groan and fall out of dark corners. "Walk On Lava" sees us being chucked out of the spaceship from a great height into the eye of a volcano. With blistering kicks and a tense acid line, will we make it out on time or will our geese get cooked? There's only way to find out...

Spooky Action At A Distance (5:11)
Review: Very few artists are digging as deep into dubstep's new chapter as creatively as Gantz. "Elmo Rehab" is a futuristic funeral dirge where emotions are mercifully kept intact thanks to the sound of someone enjoying a jumbo bag of Monster Munch. No, really. "Spooky Action At A Distance" takes us even deeper into this strange dystopian world by way of off-beat time signatures and paranoid arpeggios. As we move closer to the action we're shrouded in a scratchy, impenetrable jazz fog as a strange yearning vocal sample reminds us of how important context is. Highly limited, this one - like pretty much all Gantz creations - is a surefire keeper.

U Won't Mind (Thelem remix)
Review: Black Box are thoroughly rinsing dubstep to find some of the most exciting producers out there at the moment. It's impressive. What's more impressive still is that they can switch from intricate, deeply emotive artists like Author to people like Gantz here, who plays it cool, calm and razor sharp. Crisp and methodical with only a hint of tape hiss mixed in with his hard echoing beats, Gantz clearly comes from the school of "less is more". It works a treat. Thelem's remix adds percussive layers to create his own distinct stamp but the effect is the same - deep dubstep like this needs space to work in. When it's worked as well as this, the effect is stunning.

Review: From the eastern sorcerer who gave us 'Dying On Acid' a few years ago on Deep Medi comes 'Pusher Acid', one of the most beguiling EPs Gantz has cast our way in some time. Six tracks over two 12"s, there's a real measured pace and sense of tension running across the collection as we gradually build up to the pensive, fierce and well-chiselled title track. Elsewhere we have the eerie cinematica of 'Sleepless Elite', the left-footed lollops and slug-like bassline of 'Chiral' and the palpitating, slo-mo seduction of the vinyl-only cut 'Spineless'. Gantz - "Spry Sinister"
Gantz & El Mahdy Jr - "Rising"
Review: Deep Medi regular Gantz has developed a spotless reputation for subverted bass treatments but "Spry Sinister" is unlike anything he's ever done before. In fact it's unlike anything anyone has ever done before; swaying on a warped triplet riddim, the seasick groove is compounded by a paranoid vocal loop that persists with hypnotic venom. "Rising", a co-lab with El Mahdy Jr, sees Gantz tapping into his Eastern roots with a string-heavy half-stepper that's coated with mystic prayer calls and an unnervingly rich bottom end. Truly stunning.

Lurka - "Refresher" (Gantz remix)
Review: Gantz builds on the smart sonics he's developed with Innamind ("Stayer", "Enso", "Cave Dance") with two extreme future beat visions. "Baby Face" is almost DJ Shadow in its make-up as the lazy beats wallop and weave with a mind of their own and the bassline lollops with more of a hip-hop attitude than a dub bite. His remix of Lurka's "Refresher" is equally unique thanks to its strange sample magic, unpredictable drum dynamic and array of trippy sounds. As with all Gantz material, this is truly distinctive and defies classic categorisation. Essential.

Tokimonsta - "Last Night''s Blurry Memories"
Tokimonsta - "Park Walks"
Review: All City round off a superlative year of premier beat delivery with the eighth in their series of LA beatdown ten inches with Tokimonsta and Mike Gao at the helm! Naturally a staple of the LA beat scene - if you don't know Gao for his production work as part of the Galapagos4 label, then it's likely his name will flutter across your radar after his ingenious beat boxing app for the iPad sees the light of day. His contribution to this stellar series is a more than exemplary introduction to a producer with plenty of beat swagger in his arsenal with "Babylon Child" particularly appealing. On the other side Brainfeeder beat gal Tokimonsta impresses just as much with a grainy hue of atmospherics running through "Alive", whilst "Last Night's Blurry Memories" remains true to the title with some decidedly dreamlike melodies engulfed in warm fuzzed out bass frequencies. The neck snapping best is left till last with the straight vocal stutter boom bap drama of "Park Walks" the finest example of Toki's ease on the MPC.

Let Us In
Review: Not to be confused with the US-based, video nasty obsessed synth nerds of the same name, Bristol-based Gatekeeper's releases for the likes of Skull Disco and Punch Drunk have been few and far between but have always displayed a keen ear for progressive dubstep rhythms. This EP on Apple Pips is undoubtedly his sharpest to date - "Atmosphere Processer" utilizes a galloping breakbeat, a revving bassline and dusty synth pads for some proper Metalheadz meets contemporary Bristol vibes. "Let Us In" on the other hand is full of more suitably stripped back rhythms, but with a distinctly more dubbed out atmosphere coating its corkscrew bassline.

Review: One of the founding fathers of grime makes his debut on Soulja with a blistering 12" that bridges the gap between grime and dubstep. Geeneus (aka Wizzbit) has been at the top of the game since his early grime smash "Jam Hot", and most recently with his huge remix of Wonder's "What". "Dark Boy" leads things off and it's a dark rolling half-stepper with haunting vocal samples which will work well on dubstep dancefloors. On the flip the Metalheadz soaked vibes of "Parasite" roll into the guitar riffs of "Bad". This release is certainly one for the Grime MCs .

Review: Nottingham-based producer Geiom returns with his third release. The a-side, "Feel So Bad", is a full vocal reggae/dubstep track featuring the microphone talents of Terrible Shock. The track rides on a smooth deep b-line and some lush drifting keyboard parts, driven along by a distinctive cowbell pattern and some massive dub snares. "De Nim è Le Fant", on the flip, is a more electro style instrumental dubstep tune, as 808 kicks and snares get pitched all over the place to create a real bass assault.

And Again
Review: With loads of pleasing nods to the old-school, you can instantly hear the founding fathers of breakbeat in Gella's production. He's not afraid to use classic sampled breaks on "Force Feedback" and there's a classic breakdown that instantly reminds us of Shut Up and Dance or even Orbital. Not that it's a retro-fest by any means, it still kills it big time in 2010. "And Again" is another smart tune that juggles D&B and dubstep rhythms in brilliant harmony, and uses hip-hop vocal shots in the mould of Zinc & Hype in their prime.

Those who've been captivated by the countless free .zips and EPs from the Butterz stable would do well to take note of "Tales Of The Deep" whose 1950s style cinematic warnings over the opening bars don't really prepare you for the sharp, swinging South London bass drama. Gemmel Phillips is a producer and DJ from Bristol, UK who has released previously on tastemaker labels such as Punch Drunk, Pinch's Tectonic, Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu, Soul Jazz and Earwax before forming his own imprint in 2011. This new three-track EP here follows on from his Bamboozled EP for the label last year, and shows off Gemmy's keen talent for crafting 'purple wave' influenced bass music. Review: Following two rounds of heavy hitting platters from label bosses Kahn and Neek, the third Bandulu plate sees them step out of the spotlight and invite a new set of artists into the fold. 003 in the canon is an essential purchase for the presence of Gemmy's mythical swaggering West Country basement anthem "Roll On Tips And Toes" in fully remastered form and the Bristol grime veteran is complemented by three equally crucial cuts from the city's new school. Oaty lines up alongside Gemmy with "Untitled" a vicious 8-bar anthem in the making, whilst face down Boofy and Breen duke it out for prominence with the latter's "Hooded Up" a particularly rugged concoction of recycled strings and gut punching drums. "Track One" is the bolshier one of the pair with its swaggering half steps, well-placed MC vocal snippet and bear-like bass. The Bristol based imprint has moved the goalposts once more on volume five, first fusing grime and dub techno and the pleasingly stoned and weighty 'Hotline', before opting for more extensive vocals, glassy-eyed chords and bustling beats on 'Come Over'. Shade On
Review: Despite having a moniker which sounds like an all-female pop outfit from the 90s, you'll be glad to hear that Girl Unit, is, in fact, nothing of the sort. A house aficionado of the highest calibre, the South London based producer blends elements of UK funky, 2-step, house, garage, Chicago juke and shades of dubstep with an iconoclastic irreverence for genre boundaries. Appearing on Bok-Bok and L-Vis 1990's label, Night Slugs, the I.R.L EP marks the third release for the burgeoning young imprint, which was established earlier this year. The EP - incidentally one of the most hotly tipped records around at the moment - begins with the title track. A dramatic, cinematic intro (rather reminiscent of D&B producer Rockwell's "Noir") initiates the proceedings with a thumping statement of intent and screechy, sliding synth embellishments. A hollow, clip-clop beat underpins the track, moving from dark, moody moments to more mellow, Mount Kimbie-style sections with masterful ease. DVA takes things down a tougher, rougher street with the tapping, grinding synthetics and raw industrial edge of his 'Hi Emotions' remix, whereas Young Gunz crew member, French Fries tunes in to a funky vibe, with shuffling rhythms, a nod to soca and lashings of sun-drenched tropical exoticism.

Review: It's been an immense year for TGM as they unleashed their long-awaited second album Love Death Immortality and toured the world with it. Here we find them taking a step back to 2011 with this between-album EP that's never been pressed to vinyl before now and shows how the trio morphed sonically and creatively from the deeper, more home-listening Drink The Sea to the Prodigy-level dancefloor slammers they have become. "We Can Make The World Stop" is a dirge-like kerb-crawling sleaze-bass stomper that's charged with thick triumphancy. "The Palace Of The Innocents" is more like their earlier material with its industrial strength hip-hop breaks, distorted arpeggiated riff and dreamy flutes. Both kill it.

Review: Glume, Flo and Sepia all on one hefty slab of wax. You already know how this is going to go down. Gloopy, swampy with just the right amount of swagger, "Thug" lives up to its name with weight and class. Flip for the midrange bounce as he teams up with Slovenian brethren Flo on the bounced-packed "Skatepark". Need a little more dubspace? Jump straight on Sepia's lesson in restraint. Thug life.

Review: The Banshee EP was one of the last musical projects the pair of Glume and Phossa worked on together in Bristol before they left the city to live elsewhere. Lead single 'Banshee' has been played for years on the circuit and always got great reactions, so the pair sat down to write three more tunes to go with it for the sake of this EP. That was during lockdown so they haven't been road tested yet but rest assured when they are, the club will erupt. Each one hits deep, with trippy synth motifs from the Orient on 'Jitter', warrior energy on 'Vessel' and more broken beats on 'Sunken.'

Review: Bristol buds Glume & Phossa link up once again for another superb collab collection. This time on Encrypted, it's another trippy hat trick. "Bat Country" kicks off with a sense of cosmicity that gets deeper as the track begins to open up into an awesome sample you and your dad will recognise. Gradually upping the strange as the EP develops, "Yucatan" gets all Halloweeny with its arpeggio and strange warped keys while "Apogee" flips out in a ping-pong frenzy with layers of pipes and chimes which all double up in a really interesting and surprising way. Batty... In the best possible way.

Judgement (3:47)
Review: Viennese producer Gnischrew's occasional vinyl releases tend to be ultra-limited affairs, with his most recent outings being pressed as dubplates of which less than 50 copies exist. Mercifully, there are far more copies floating around of this Challenger Deep label debut, though as ever with the popular label demand may outstrip supply. A-side 'Chatter' is a bona-fide rib-cage rattler: an echo-laden slab of slow motion digi-dub that blurs the boundaries between authentic 21st century dub and the hazy, mind-altering sonics of deep dubstep. Those looking for a higher tempo and more obvious dancefloor potential should check the pitched-down deep dubstep flex of flipside 'Judgement', whose low-end pressure is undeniably heavy.

Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

Ovale
Review: With world-conquering tracks from Deadboy, Jamie xx and Mosca already under their belts this year, the latest release from the Numbers stable sees Belgian duo GoldFFinch take centre stage with a double header of acid-tinged bass tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor. "Red Mask" sounds like the kind of raw analogue jam Boddika is becoming legendary for, with 303 flecks intertwined around its ghettotech influenced staccato vocal samples and bone dry percussion. B-Side "Ovale" is less furiously paced, but similarly bass heavy, utilising simple 808 beats over its huge low end, accented by some pitched down cut up vocals and oddball melodies which are particularly reminiscent of Claude VonStroke's tongue-in-cheek approach to house music. Another huge release from one the year's most consistent labels.

Review: Kahn & Neek return to local hub Peng Sound for some self titled double plated dubplate action under their steppahs project Gorgon Sound, housed in a rather lovely stamped gatefold sleeve. Although primarily known for their incendiary grime bangers on their own Bandulu imprint, and the dancehall sounds of last year's Backchat single, Kahn & Neek's steppahs-influenced Gorgon Sound project is a chance for them to expand on Bristol's rich legacy of dub, reggae, and soundsystem culture. Since the pair decided to begin the project in 2010, Gorgon Sound has since evolved into a full dubplate DJ operation, with a show made up of entirely their own material. Last year saw the Gorgon Sound project see its first vinyl release, in the form of "Find Jah Way", which featured on the debut released from Bristol's Peng Sound; this double 12" release presents a more expansive take on their steppahs sound, featuring four cuts of West Country bassweight with guest vocalist spots from Brazil's Junior Dread and Bristol's Guy Calhoun.

Who Ah De Gorgon?!
Review: Bristol label Peng Sound return to Rise, the Gorgon Sound EP released earlier this year with a fresh dose of versions from the Dubkasm crew that will satisfy every self respecting soundsystem operator out there. All four cuts from Kahn and Neek's release have been reworked and renamed by Dubkasm, who utilise their legendary soundtrac CM440 mixing console, carefully channelling the track's signals through chains of spring reverb, tape delays and specially crafted effects modulators. Dubkasm's DJ Stryda and Digistep have done an excellent job of plunging the Gorgon Sound even deeper into the realms of dub culture and the version theme extends to the artwork too with Tape Echo reworking the cover from the Gorgon Sound EP with equally impressive results

Dubkasm - "Find Jah Way" (version)
Review: Peng Sound revisit their highly sought after debut release. Just shy of two years old, it still rattles and hums with authentic dub warmth and drama. Gorgon Sound's original bubbles with bouncy heat as the bass modulations spring off the double-up kicks. Dubkasm's version is equally alluring as we're invited into a much wider space where guitar shots and other melodic elements are entwined into the mix. One timeless composition, two killer versions, if you weren't lucky enough to grab this first time round, you know what to do!

Cosmos
Review: Weighing in with some monolithic dubstep styles on Mala's ever excellent Deep Medi Musik imprint, Japanese producer par excellence Goth Trad proves that there can be some give in big room ravey dubstep, and though the track may primarily lurch around aggravated mid-range synth grind, the moments of calm creep in with control that comes from a diverse and adaptable producer. On the flip "Cosmos" takes the deeper approach, using inter-locking percussion and devastating sub bass for a classic exercise in proper dubstep. Whichever kind of set you're plumping for, this release is definitely for the purists.

Review: Something a little different here from Mala's renowned and revered Deep Medi Musik imprint. Goth Trad kicks off "Two Face" with a trembling, eastern trill in the intro, interrupted by smacking drum kicks in a bleak, hollow soundscape. A deep, warping b-line underpins the tune with its computer game bleeps and recurring motifs. Up next, "Sunbeam" offers a more instantly recognisable Deep Medi sound with sweeping atmospherics whistling around a stabbing beat, deadly subs and low end prowess. Pattering bongos creep in around the halfway point definitely one for fans of the Mala, Pinch and Loefah crowd.

Far East Assassin (DJ Distance remix)
Review: Finish copy promos. Goth-Trad returns to Skud with a second release guaranteed to make your head explode and your bones
shudder. 'Far East Assasin' is probably the craziest dubstep song to date, beginning with an eighties-like guitar riff it immediately grabs
your ear, cue the harsh bass stabs and the hard head-rocking until a swoop into an almighty 4/4 bass-driven monster. The DJ
Distance mix strips down the elements of the original and gives it an absolute distance-weighted bass portion that has been rattling
eyes from FWD>> to DMZ. A true quality heavyweight release from Skud receiving props from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Hatcha,
N Type, Mala to name a few.

Sunbeam VIP (5:17)
Review: Japan's Takeaki Maruyama's dark, deep and sweltering pseudo dubstep has been around for longer than you might think. Before being signed early on by Mala for his own Deep Medi Muzik, Goth-Trad was releasing cutting-edge bass science on labels such as DNA Kalacta and Popgroup Recordings. His return to Deep Medi is a significant one, and "Sinker" is likely to be one of the best tunes that he's made in a while - those bouncy, fluttering swirls of mutant bass are docile yet vibrant and possess a sort of subtle menace to them. "Sunbeam VIP", however, is a pure corner-dweller's delight, a brooding little bass monster with enough subs to gravitate you off your feet and into hyper-space. Another winner from both artist and label. Quality assured.

Review: Japanese dubstep don Goth-Trad (real name Takeaki Maruyama) is back on Deep Medi for the first time in six years. Those who like the more abstract, intense, noisy, full-throttle and experimental end of his sound will love the new VIP reboot of 2012 single 'Airhead'. It's little less than an assault on these senses full of laser-gun electronics, vibrating motifs, machine-gun bass and industrial-strength beats, all whipped together into a frenzy of intensity. In contrast, flipside 'Apes' is deep, weighty and dubby, with foghorn tones and what sound like woodwind instrument samples teasing in a classy deep dubstep groove.

Review: Big return to the Deep Medi fold for Japan's Goth Trad, with his four track EP Babylon Fall given even further sheen by the presence of a certified Jah legend in Max Romeo! If that name doesn't elicit an "oh gosh" response then back to Music History night classes with you! The iconic Jamaican vocalist lines the title track with aplomb, giving the vintage dread step vibes of Trad's arrangement that extra air of authenticity. Elsewhere on this heavyweight double vinyl pressing, "Falling Leaf" and "Itinerant Priest" see the self described One Man Army serving up a couple of militant excursions through industrial sub bass dynamics - with the latter particularly unrelenting! "Sublimination" ends proceedings with some cross pollination between Detroit techno and vintage dubstep.
