Review: Electro might be trendy as Tik Tok right now but the Dutch label Klakson has been treading its own path through the genre since way before it was so hyped. This new Shapes Of The Roots Part 1 & 2 collection from D Roots is one of its strongest releases to date: eight tracks of proudly analogue electro that explore an array of rhythms and storytelling celestial worlds. Things start frantically with 'Breaking Fakes' and 'Miami 21' then more funky drum patterns arrive next to the squelchy, squirreling synth lines. There is pure dance floor fire in tunes like 'Russian Roulette' and ice-cold trips like 'Alone In The Echoes' all making this such a quality LP.

Review: Somewhat confusingly, Dabobert and Masterarp are both alternative aliases of long-serving German producer Dagobert Howe, whose discography stretches right back to the late 1990s. Startopology was first released two years ago, and here gets a fresh pressing on blue marbled vinyl. Across 13 deliciously spacey tracks, Howe does a fine job in combining punchy electro rhythms, mind-bending synthesizer melodies and robotic vocals with elements of synth-wave, intergalactic ambient, warped electrofunk and, on the ear-catching "Kosmic Transmission", vintage hip-hop. It's a hugely listenable set, all told, with enough tried-and-tested dancefloor workouts to suggest that it will work both at home and in the clubs.

Review:  Overseen by local Rotterdam selectors Spacemaker and Leather E, Electronic Emergencies becomes the latest label to show how musically diverse the Dutch city is and they launch in truly impressive fashion. Anyone with an interest in Dutch electro and wave should be eminently familiar with Danny Bosten's work as Das Ding. Active in the DIY tape scene since the '80s, Bosten's iconic music was later brought to wider attention by Minimal Wave and the chance to indulge in some all new Das Ding material should not be passed up. The darkness that characterised early Das Ding material is very much evident on Why Is My Life So Boring? whose ten tracks are a powerful testament to Bosten's enduring talents.

Review: For Missing Tapes, Minimal Wave has managed to unearth a wealth of previously unheard gems from Dutch electro trailblazer Danny Bosten. Dark electro diggers may be aware of Bosten's early 1980s work, which was initially self-released on cassette, but has also been re-issued since by Minimal Wave and others. The material here was recorded in the same period and rediscovered some years back by the producer. It's similar in style, as you'd expect, with Bosten variously exploring otherworldly electro, sci-fi leaning Italo-disco, stylish, new wave synth workouts, and throbbing proto-techno. What impresses most, though, is the seeming freshness of the material; it might be 35 years old, but it still sounds formidably futuristic.

Review: Marcus Mumm aka Das Muster lands on Fundamental Records with a monster of a release after recent appearances on Solar One, among other like-minded imprints. The Twin Paradox Series 002 spans pretty much every corner of the electro sphere, starting with the deep and watery bass tones of "Der Lange Weg", the 80's sounding sequences of "Die Welt Der Farben", and the underwater beast that is "Widerspruch". The fifteen-track anthology also includes harder tunes such as "Everything But", the Drexcyian mutant "Zugang", and "Talk To Me", a vocal led piece with a huge low-end and the most gorgeous pads we've heard this week.

Review: Data Memory Access is the fun-loving duo of Jacopo Latini and Giammarco Orsini, two Italian artists who've mastered the art of cathartic breakwork. Showing that instantiating ecstasy in the listener is an art unto itself, Yearning For Cobalt comes as their first album, and contains ten tracks that do no less than lay the depth on thick. Fans of Bicep or Indopan will be satisfied, as lead cuts like 'Cobalt', 'Nowhere' and 'Transcendence' deal in chorus-doused vocal samples, spitty breaks and awestruck pads of wonder.

Review: Given the underground acclaim heaped on Marie Davidson's previous albums - ultra-stylish affairs that blend elements of minimal wave, dark Italo-disco, off-kilter electro and moody ambient - it's little surprise to see her popping up on Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. The album's nine tracks are largely sharp, rough and fuzzy, with sparse-but-dense drum machines rhythms underpinning bouncy, delay-laden synth lines, thrusting electronics and Davidson's sleazy, spoken word vocals. It's an attractive combination that guarantees thrills throughout, from the almost claustrophobic throb of "Denial", to the mutant electrofunk bounce of "Good Vibes".

Review: Earlier in the year, modern minimal wave and coldwave hero Marie Davidson signed a high-profile deal with Ninja Tune. Here, she makes good on that contract, following a couple of killer singles with what could be her strongest album to date. After setting the tone with clandestine, tongue-in-cheek opener "Your Biggest Fan" - a creepy spoken word cut taking aim at stalker-line fans to the accompaniment of heavy analogue synth bass and creepy computer bleeps - Davidson giddily flits between elastic dancefloor workouts (the brilliantly sleazy "Work It" and mind-altering "Workaholic Paranoid Bitch"), attractive post-EBM instrumentals (the psychedelic and fizzing "Lara"), meditative ambient melodiousness ("Day Dreaming"), bizarre experimental weirdness (the suitable dystopian "The Tunnel"), and stylish analogue pop (the whispered vocals and off-kilter early morning funk of "So Right").

Review: Montreal-based producer Marie Davison's fourth full length was her most self-reflective to date. This reissue reminds us of how it found the artist serving up plenty of introspection after a year spent living in Berlin. It comments on the stresses and strains of working on the dance music world and of a life in club culture. It is an immersive and absorbing world of synth heavy beauty that builds on previous dance floor orientated material with new sounds. Italo disco, proto-industrial and electro all feature with plenty of hefty bottom ends.

Review: The hottest electro for the wildest freaks. Citinite compiles the legendary '84 jams of funk master John Davis. John Davis was born in Anderson, South Carolina to musical parents, and started playing the guitar when he was seven years old. He went on to learn the bass guitar, drums and keyboards and began his musical career travelling around America singing gospel music with his father and his five brothers. In the 70s he joined the army and was stationed in Germany; when he left the army he continued to play with both local musicians and American acts who were touring the country. An experienced producer, in the early 80s Davis worked with Terry Lewis of The Time and in the 90s moved to Los Angeles where he played with Babyface and many other artists on the Solar Records label. The tracks compiled on the Citinite album "Flashcan" were written in 1984. John recalls, "I had a friend, Manfred Radtke, who had a small studio in Kitzingen, Germany. He offered me the chance to work in his studio and there I began to write songs in the style that I really liked, that came out of my soul and heart. One of my favourite bands was Zapp and they often worked with the voice box. At the time, music was very electronic and groups like Parliament were doing a mixture of smooth funk and electronics, and so I mixed them together to create my tracks". The resuscitation of electro's most influential producers continues with this reissue from 1984 of John Davis' best work. With a funk quota that makes Prince himself sound like a bow-legged honky, while production techniques have evolved, it's nonetheless clear that Juan Atkins' early work owes a debt to 'Laser Man', I-F has spent a lot of time listening to the warm, vocodered melodies of 'Dream Six-0', and as for Undergound Resistance's high-tech sound? Take a listen to the moody chords and angular breaks of 'Electro-?' to find out who Mad Mike's mentor is.

Review: It is hard to overstate the impact that Etienne de Crecy had on the global, but specifically French, electronic scene. His debut album in 1996 brought all new sounds and references and set in motion a revolution that spawned everything from classic French touch to jazzy deep house by Saint Germain via what went on to become the Ed Banger-aligned electro house of Justice et al. It all started with the first volume of Super Discount and carried on through further volumes such as this third one which is as searing and vital now as ever.

Review: Super Discount was the hugely influential 1996 debut album by Etienne de Crecy. Several more volumes came and helped to define the French scene of the ear and they remain great inspirations to this day as De Crecy's work very much propagated certain other genres, from scratchy filter-house a la Daft Punk to the jazzier house genre of St Germain. This second volume is packed with plenty of names who helped to define the early French electronic scene such as Alex Gopher & Julien Delfaud, Philippe Zdar and DJ Mehdi. It's raw electro house that fizzes and spits with potent dancefloor scuzziness and energy even now.

Review: Denial of Service's new album comes after a series of impressive EPs such as 2015's Sensou and 2017's Contour & Shape. The expanded format allows for a more adventurous and expansive sound, however, so across 15 tracks we really hear the producer open up. It is still the machine driven electro-funk sound you would expect, but with a broader array of moods and grooves and influences from IDM, techno and even EBM. There are widescreen cuts that free your mind next to more intense and claustrophobic cuts. Either way, it's a real masterclass.

Review: There's not much info out there about My Own Jupiter's latest addition to the roster, though we do know that he's a Spanish producer and that "Morning For Loss" is his debut album. It's a rather impressive set, with the publicity-shy artist offering up a poignant, spacey and quietly picturesque mix of slo-mo melodic electro, intergalactic dancefloor workouts, early '90s style IDM, bleeping ambient techno and shimmering purist electro jams that sound like they've been sat idle on a dusty cassette since 1989. Throughout, Depressor strikes a near perfect balance between bottom end grunt, atmospheric aural textures and tuneful, ear-catching synthesizer motifs.
