  1. A2 - "Plonk" (7:59)
  2. Dario Reimann - "Iatch" (5:49)
  3. Harry Wills - "Estren" (7:59)
  4. Carl Finlow - "Fmseq" (6:33)
Review: Just under 12 months ago, French imprint Arpege launched with a multi-artist EP rich in far-sighted and futuristic takes on tech-house. For the follow-up they've decided to flip the script, instead offering up a quartet of electro-focused cuts. The headline attraction comes from British electro titan Carl Finlow, whose "Fmseq" is a spacey and melodious mixture of body-popping beats, throbbing bass, lilting lead lines and sparkling chords. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP though, from the heady deep space bleeps and hybrid electro/tech-house grooves of Harry Wills' "Estren", to the drowsy electronic warmth, bubbly acid bass and skittish beats of A2's "Plonk".

  1. It's Got Me
  2. Minutes Of Funk
Review: 3024's pilfering of West Country talent continues unabated with the rather busy of late Julio Bashmore being swiftly followed by the equally prolific Addison Groove in releasing essential club tackle for Martyn's imprint. Anyone who has indulged in Mr T Williams' recent output for Swamp81 or Tectonic will have an inkling of the current Addison Groove sonic flex, all tightly wound post circa 130bpm 808 patterns, though "It's Got Me" is truly characterised by the disparate sensation of woozy melodic flourishes being diced by the rhythmic swagger. Flipside you get future funk electro odyssey of "Minutes Of Funk" with swathes of purple textures allowed to breath beneath a perma bouncy bass thrust. The midway drop into a bumping house pattern will grab you every time!

This Is It (12")
Cat: TEC 049. Rel: 18 Apr 11
  1. This Is It
  2. Make Um Bounce
Review: In between brief dalliances with Swamp81 and 3024, Addison Groove shows some hometown support with this essential twelve for Pinch's Tectonic imprint. "This Is It" could only come from the sonic palette of Tony Williams, with steppy juke heavy 808 riddims ripping out of the speaker cones at 138bpm amidst a barrage of expertly spliced vocals and rubbery rave bleeps. Amidst the rowdiness, there's a distinct progression to the track which makes it a worthy successor to last year's triumphant "Footcrab". "Make Um Bounce" slips down the tempo scale a notch or two for a more standard 4x4 flex that's brimming with enough bass and rasping percussion to find a place amidst Jackmaster's forthcoming excellent mix for Fabric. Big tip!

  8. Kris Wadsworth - "Abroad" (5:12)
Review: For its seventh release, southern Italians Obscura Music return to welcome exciting new talents and core label acts. Head honchos Agents Of Time venture down an electro route with "East Coast", as do the ever impressive London Modular Alliance on the hypnotic "Buck One". Man of the moment Aussie Jensen Interceptor channels classic Drexciyan aesthetics on "Manix" before homeboys and label staples Hiver come through with the slinky and hypnotic tech house of "Stasys" and Detroit veteran Kris Wadsworth makes a surprising appearance with some slow burning minimalism displayed on closer "Abroad".

  2. Peter Raw - "Brotherhood" (5:52)
  3. HDV - "Digital Delight" (5:44)
  4. Kosh - "The Mess" (5:08)
Review: Sounds Benefit founder Tom Joyce cast his net far and wide when sniffing out cuts to include on the label's latest multi-artist EP. There's plenty of little-known talent on show across the four tracks that make-up the EP, which come from artists based in Frankfurt, Paris and - most surprisingly - Casablanca. We're particularly enjoying the hybrid electro/spacey tech-house bounce of Peter Raw's wonderfully swinging "Brotherhood", though the deep and melodious electro bounce of Kosh's "The Mess" is also really rather good. Elsewhere, Manuel Schatz and Rob Amboule offer up some bold and snappy Motor City techno/acid house fusion, while HDV's "Digital Delight" is raw, analogue, funky and decidedly alien in tone.

  3. Kaelan - "Meandering Rivers" (Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff remix) (5:30)
  4. Stojche - "The Exchange" (Gian Hydrocity Refix) (5:40)
Review: Blackhall & Bookless have been pursuing a fantastic strain of house and techno via their Jaunt label for many moons now. They're back and celebrating 10 years with a series of fantastic remixes that highlight the scope of their artistic vision, and that of those close to them. Inland leads in with an oceans deep version of the label bosses' "Spirit", which is smartly followed up by Jonas Kopp's equally submersive take on Hiver's "Itria". Jasper Wolff and Maarten Mittendorff lets the swooning "Meandering Rivers" by Kaelan burst its banks and fill out an expansive landscape, while Stojche pings Gian's "The Exchange" out into an electro-speckled cosmos.

Review: Seminal New York City imprint Serotonin lives on. John Selway and Jason Szostek present It's What We Live For: Volume 2 - the second in a series of compilations sharing their vision of sounds of tomorrow. Szostek himself dons the well known BPMF alias again for some fierce breakbeat techno action on "Zu Heib Fur Uns", the equally legendary Healy brothers aka Somatic Response still going strong - as heard on the slo-mo acid trance journey "Strategy Of Desire" and relative newcomer Heidi Sabertooth of Opal Onyx delivers some sludgy electro-punk antics on "So You Want To Take Back Your Will". There's some handy locked grooves on the electro-bass tip featured too by Synapse and Pointsman, which were pretty wicked too.

At the A2 London's Doppelate makes their Cong Burn debut with an elegant tech-house roller. Fresh from Russia's underground is Camin, on this, his debut 12" release he drops a useful tool which squeezes between electro and techno. Cong Burn founder Howes closes the B side with some warm hypnosis that could have landed in the golden era of Workshop.

This time round, Leipzig's Eoism (Pulse Drift/Undersound) explores some emotive smack electro on "Minor Alchemy", the enigmatic Hawaiian Surfer channels the distinct style of Motor City soul on "Parabolic Lens" and on the flip Croatia's Zagrebacki Elektric pump up the dark energy of "Ichi Ni Chi Cni".

Review: Jason B.Bernard's Peripheral Minimal is one of those labels which rarely disappoints, especially when the release concerns a collaborative effort from some of the most sought-after names in the electronic sphere. Beta Evers, a legendary coldwave Goddess from the 70s and 80s, rolls through with two magnetic slices of electro-infused gnarliness that take the genre back to its core roots, and she's backed by Drexciya's legendary Heinrich Muller on "Innerhalb Der Zeit". On the flip, Spatial Relation is armed with three further shots of cold-blooded drum machine funk with that inimitable warehouse feel... sounding a bit like Berlin back in the mid 80s. Heavy and tipped!

Review: Artwork of the week goes to this Solar One 12", with the label enlisting Lowlands don Mehdi Rouchiche to work his Godspill magic on the collective talents of Helena Hauff, Perseus Traxx, The Exaltics, Drvg Cvltre and Ekman. Perseus Traxx's moustache is quite something! These artists join forces for the Signs Of Decay 12", a powerful collective statement on the desiccation some "hard and dirty acid tracks" can do to a dancefloor. Don't come here looking for any lofty concepts, this is just five of the best banging their boxes in the name of all that is grotty and lysergic. Fans of Hauff's Panzerkreuz material will be delighted with the demonic, red lining sounds of her contribution "Culmination Of Frustration."

  2. Jason Fine - "Human Need" (Heinrich Mueller Celestial Sphere mix)
Review: Repress: As one of the younger breed of Detroit talents, Jason Fine is still just starting to get a foothold, despite having a good few years of releases behind him. His Kontra Musik relationship has proven to be the most fruitful, and this remix package capitalises on that with two top shelf commissions. A Made Up Sound brings his unmistakable broken house swing to bear, with warming subs and thick swathes of pad and melody twisted to Dave Huismann's crafty designs. Heinrich Muller brings the Drexciyan vibes in abundance with his punchy electro stance that remains peerless after all these years.

Review: Seuil's Eklo imprint returns, riding the post minimal wave of electro-techno on this fine three tracker by various artists. The Unknown Cities Of Gold Vol 1 is the first release from the Paris based imprint in 2018 thus far, and features the mysterious France 98 (a member of Tearss) who delivers a deeply meditative bleep techno excursion on "July 7" following the tradition of B12. We're loving Walid's trippy retro-tech jam "Human Injection" (Western World mix), which is the kind of track you'd hear at a Berlin party like Libertine or Melliflow alike. On the flip, it's TB-303 vs SP 1200 on the deep down and dirty "Tape 1".

Review: If you're enjoying the bountiful beat creativity found in the grey area between juke, jungle and ghetto tech then you'll already be well acquainted with Dutch dynamo H Sik. "Sonic Rage" is a fractured fusion of splice breakbeat magic, stuttering bass and strange vocal textures. "No Promises" is a slice of subversive soul thanks to skittish drums and yearning pads that seemingly weep on the fills, singing harmony with the subs as the track develops. Sik beats for sick times.

Review: This tidy EP gathers together some of The Hacker's most sought-after early tracks, all of which have been re-mastered to leave them sounding weightier than ever. First up is the pulsating brilliance of electro-techno fusion workout "At Night", which - like two other cuts on the EP - first appeared on legendary 1998 12" "A Strange Day". This prime chunk of mind-altering body music is swiftly followed by the sparkling, saucer-eyed alien electro-funk of "Leather Dreams" and the hard-wired Kraftwerk style electro heaviness of "Body Electric" (a fuzz-soaked slammer based around the Robots' "Numbers" that initially came out in 1998). "The Night Flight", a bubbly Drexciya style number from 1999, completes a fantastic package.

MonoTrax Volume 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MON 019. Rel: 24 Jun 19
  1. The Hacker - "Rythmus Machine" (5:12)
  2. Larry McCormick - "Root Code" (5:26)
  3. Cosmic Force - "Maximilian Of Roma" (5:08)
  4. DeFeKT - "I Am Here" (5:17)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Larry McCormick's Monotone label is one of the finest outposts for darkside electro operating in these bountiful times for the genre, and following on from the first volume of vinyl-only compilation MonoTrax, brace yourselves for round two. The Hacker is at his stalking, sinister best on "Rhythmus Machine," while McCormick himself brings a tough, street-level grittiness to "Root Code." Cosmic Force is on a dystopian sci fi tip with the nagging synth patterns of "Maximilian Of Roma", and DeFeKT completes the package with the audacious synth acrobatics and jackhammer beats of "I Am Here." What more do you need to know? This is high-end electro business for down and dirty, sweat-box dancefloors.
