  1. Blackhall & Bookless - "Spirit" (Inland remix) (7:16)
  2. Hiver - "Itria" (Jonas Kopp remix) (5:46)
  3. Kaelan - "Meandering Rivers" (Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff remix) (5:30)
  4. Stojche - "The Exchange" (Gian Hydrocity Refix) (5:40)
Review: Blackhall & Bookless have been pursuing a fantastic strain of house and techno via their Jaunt label for many moons now. They're back and celebrating 10 years with a series of fantastic remixes that highlight the scope of their artistic vision, and that of those close to them. Inland leads in with an oceans deep version of the label bosses' "Spirit", which is smartly followed up by Jonas Kopp's equally submersive take on Hiver's "Itria". Jasper Wolff and Maarten Mittendorff lets the swooning "Meandering Rivers" by Kaelan burst its banks and fill out an expansive landscape, while Stojche pings Gian's "The Exchange" out into an electro-speckled cosmos.

  1. Cygnus - "Download Her" (4:31)
  2. Kuldaboli - "Minningar Og Ventingar" (3:35)
  3. Rodney - "This Isn't Something I Want Anymore" (5:09)
  4. Noamm - "Telecommunication" (3:52)
Review: If icy, robotic club electro is your thing, we'd recommend picking up this multi-artist EP from Luke Eargoggle's Stilleben Records imprint. Cygnus kicks things off with the sleazy hustle of "Download Her", a decidedly wonky but on-point number that comes complete with Egyptian Lover style spoken word vocals, before Kuldaboli delivers a funky, weighty and stripped-back club rocker rich in twisted acid bass, mind-altering noises and robotic club beats. Over on side B, Rodney weighs in with the up-tempo deep space rumble of "This Isn't Something I Want Anymore", whose acid style bassline is funky as hell (and twice as hot), while Naoamm channels the spirit of both Kraftwerk and Drexciya on the bleep-laden heaviness of "Telecommunication".

  1. Exzakt & BFX - "Raw" (5:23)
  2. Kluentah - "Jungle Juice" (6:44)
  3. Luke Eargoggle - "Olympia" (5:36)
  4. Amboss - "I Want To Live In My Car" (6:03)
Review: Hearse's third transmission is as strong as their previous two. It's a fine gathering of dark electro cuts from a varied but vital crew and starts up with Miami's Exzakt & BFX collaborating on the rough around the edges "Raw." Hamburg's Kluentah then goes hard with "Jungle Juice," which is frosted and tense, and then acid madness comes to the fore on Luke Eargoggle's "Olympia." Syncoatped kicks are pile don top of each other and freaky vocal apparitions appear on Amboss's closer "I Want To Live In My Car" making this a beguiling listen indeed.

  4. Andy Garcia & Mike Kretsch - "I Can't Sleep" (5:03)
Review: Cryovac Recordings exists because craftsmen and artists work together to make it so. Cryovac enlists individuals that are true to their identity and expression. These conscripts are survivors that adapt and continue through techno's ever changing terrain. Cryovac works to expose the depth, creativity, and diversity of the Detroit underground. We believe that vinyl is the best format to inscribe our effort. It is our intent to leave a physical record of our time before we can no longer speak. Brian Kage moves quietly letting his personal projects, various labels and collaborations be his voice. His production is marked by a big and lumbering sound pushed by a strong crispy percussion. His clear headed response to techno electro is a conditioning of a Detroit instinct. Kage's drive to achieve his vision means escape from the box and into his own world. >>>>Andy Garcia and Mike Kretsch have a shared method of recording and editing that works naturally together. It is a mindset of minimally based 4/4 progression amid simple synth hooks and heroic rises. They build a free form improv jam and insert it into a mathematical arrangement. It is this duality of extremes in which their tracks find identity. The Garcia/Kretsch team endeavor to tell a story one melody at a time.

Yamaha Acid
Yamaha Acid (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BNB 002. Rel: 09 Apr 18
  1. Honda
  2. Yamaha
  3. Suzuki
  4. Toyota
Review: Kalbata has turned his hand to many styles over the years, not least the excellent soundsystem explorations of Congo Beat The Drum, but on this second release for his label Brush & Broom, he's decided to fling himself into the fiery pit of acid while paying tribute to 90s motocross bikes. "Honda" is dripping with 303, punctuated by a twitchy set of drums, while "Yamaha" takes a diversion into moodier territory, letting hazy chords set the tone for an energised but defiantly heads down acid workout. "Suzuki" is a bit spicier, capturing the essence of 'up-for-it' early Trax Records but edging it into more hypnotic, looped up territory. "Toyota" finishes the EP off with an atonal bleep out with an electro undercarriage.

  4. Electro Nation - "TechnoElectro" (4:28)
  5. Noamm - "Telesthesia" (4:17)
  6. Acidulant - "Rianology" (4:47)
Review: Earlier in the year, Madrid's Electro Records launched the Electro Transmissions series via Abduction Krew, a five-track, multi-artist EP full of cybernetic dancefloor treats. Here they present the follow-up, a rock-solid mini compilation on eye-catching red splatter vinyl entitled Sterilization Krew. There's plenty to excite electro heads throughout, from the sparkling deep electro shimmer of Kan3da's 'Condoso' and the intergalactic, bassline-driven alien funk of Datawave's superb 'Emeria', to the mind-bending, TB-303 driven acid-electro of Acidulant's 'Rainology' and the Aux 88-style high-octane heaviness of Noamm's 'Telesthesia'. It's a rather good collection all told, and with limited numbers of copies being pressed, you'll need to act fast to secure one.

Review: KANGAROO SKULL is the solo project of Rohan Rebeiro - drummer of renowned Australian trio MY DISCO. Heavily percussive and rhythmically complex, KANGAROO SKULL meticulously pieces together soundscapes within Max MSP, with an end result that conceals in its raw simplicity the intensity of the process. With multiple tours outside Australia already behind him, Australian dancefloors have been keenly awaiting a first release. PALACE OF NOTHING is his much-anticipated debut - four tracks that convey a sophistication far beyond what could be expected from such a new producer.

Review: Franck Kartell is a French producer on the rise and next up he debuts on the Dutch outlet Between Places - a sub label of SolarOneMusic. Once again he sets off on a comprehensively realised journey through space that opens with the haunting and twinkling synth work of "The Last Message" before "Science Fiction" invites you into a lush world of electro. "Heartbeats From Outer Space" is like a field recording from the dark side of the moon and "Time Machine" is aqueous electro of the highest order. "Electroluminescence" closes things out in Blade Runner fashion with high quality synth work suspending you in outer space.

Review: In advance of release, Diagonal and Elon Katz have been particularly mysterious when it comes to the contents of The Human Pet. Instead of the usual press release, they simply emailed journalists a bizarre list of "care instructions" for said mythical companion. Katz, who rose to prominence as part of Streetwalker and White Car, is something of a bombastic, electronic eccentric, and The Human Pet is ostensibly a pop album dragged through several hedges backwards. Expect impassioned, stylized vocals, twisted boogie synths, scattergun electronics, bizarre beats, breakcore style cut-up madness, and crusty special effects. Oh, and discernible nods to EBM, industrial and Autechre.

Review: Despite scouring the Internet for the best part of an afternoon, we've been unable to identify the producer (or producers) behind "Keep Your Mouth Shut 1", an anonymous but quietly impressive four-track EP. While the untitled psychedelic techno shuffler that opens the EP sounds like a peak-time jam in the making, the cut that follows (simply titled "Track 2" here) is an exotic broken techno affair that makes superb use of raw, acid-fired sub-bass and haunting, almost child-like vocal samples. There's more hybrid fun to be found on the flip, where a driving breakbeat cut comes wrapped in shimmering, summery chords ("Track 3"), and a high-octane, acid-fired electro jam threatens to whisk us off to a deep space destination unknown.

Review: Kid Frost's "Terminator" might well have turned 35 this year, but it still sounds fresh and from the future. Often spoken about as a perfect track by real electro heads. It has sleek bassline sounds, a slick DMX beat and flawless Oberheim synth-pads all finished off with a self-built vocoder vocal. Kid Frost's MC work here is as good as any you will hear and helps this tight title track stand head and shoulders above many others. Flip-side "Rough Cut" is just as essential. This tidy 7" is limited so grab one before it's gone.

Review: Following up the inaugural release by Tomassini which featured a remix from Hodge, newcomer Kilig (of club Night Tales) draws from London's dynamic underground sound for their first club-centric EP on Bath-based Origins Sound. If the progressive breaks of "Is It Time" was released over 20 years ago, it could well have been played by the likes of Sasha & Digweed. Also very much on a quintessentially British vibe is the post UK bass experiment of "VHS Flex", while the flip the fledgling producer show us their version of electro on the futuristic vibe of "Bed Test".

  1. Anxiety (5:21)
  2. Scatterbrain (4:53)
  3. Data_Loss (6:06)
  4. Data_Ctrl (3:59)
Review: Chris Weeks has been building up the Kingbastard catalogue for a long time now, generally taking a self-reliant approach in the underground electronica scene where CD-r releases reign supreme. He's been a key figure on Ambidextrous since the label launched back in 2008, and now he's committed to wax with a range of crunched up leftfield sonics for the machine-loving crowd. "Anxiety" is a melodic cut with a house-minded structure, but there's a lot of production acrobatics and compositional swerves taking place within this framework. "Scatterbrain" is more overtly out there, tapping up the kind of heavily processed sounds that producers like Paradroid have championed in the past. "Data_Loss" strike a heavy blow somewhere between dubstep and electro, and "Data_Ctrl" ups the tempo for a rabble-rousing exercise in mind-bending machine music.

Review: Whereas the shadowy Motion Sequence imprint explores the outer limits of minimal house and techno, its sub label Type/5.2 tends to explore more electro (ish) sounds. The last three releases have been by anonymous artists, but this latest one has a name to it - Patrick Klein. As one of the founders of the hot Frankfurt imprint Traffic, Klein has been known to explore the old school sounds of Detroit, northern bleep and rave aesthetics recently and 'TYPE 52004' ticks all those boxes. From the spaced-out breakbeat action of A1, to B side jams like the funky B1 cut (reminiscent of sounds from the Motor City's second wave) and B2 that goes further with the futurist vibes on this off-kilter electro belter - tip!

Epitaph Of Ego

  1. Epitaph Of Ego (5:41)
  2. Moondust In My Eye (6:57)
  3. The Last Day Lasts Forever (20:25)
Review: There's a sense of dark mystery throughout this latest from Onont Kombar, which some will recall from his contributions to the 2016 mini-album, 'Split', featuring celebrated tracks such as 'The Doors'. Not quite a case of more of the same here - all three pieces feel very original - but nevertheless that steely and unnerving cold wave vibe is very much present and correct. This outing veers from suggestion to full intoxication. 'The Last Days Last Forever' sounds like a recording of a track from distance; you struggle to make out the details but together they create a powerful overall mood. Meanwhile, 'Epitaph of Ego' brings acid warbles and snares to the fore, resulting in a tune that owes much to the more Romantic side of electro and electro pop, with 'Moondust In My Eye' employing a chugging groove to give its whirring, industrial details a dash of obscure funk.

Review: Whether you know him best as Dr Floyd, Juno Laine or one of the many other aliases he's had over the years, Russian-in-Finland Kirilll Junolainen is a remarkably prolific and consistent artist in the contemporary electro sound. His recent Preset album Sahkomusiikki is a fine example of this, as is this very special 12" on Telomere. Four cuts deep, each one showcases a different side to Kirill from his most playful ('Algoritmi') to his most stern ('Hejastus') by way of his most laidback and slinky ('Meri') All analogue soul and only essential ingredients, while his output is maximal, the sonic make-up is always perfectly minimal.

Review: Kuldaboli is part of the Stilleben family and has helped define its sound with his searing take on electro. This time around he dials back the crazy and offers up some more thoughtful and mysterious electro that kicks off with the bottom-wiggling boom bap and gurgling bassline of "Eolileg Mannvera". Things slow down on the more eerie and unsettling "Kaldir Straumar" then its an all out computer game assault on "Lazer Tag" which is pristine digital perfection. "Where Are You" is a real floor wrecker and last of all alien life forms inhabit the haunting "Vakan Endalausa".

Chromatophore Vol 1
Chromatophore Vol 1 (limited numbered purple vinyl 12" + insert + stickers)
Cat: CHR 001. Rel: 09 Oct 20
  1. Plant43 - "Europan Tides" (6:13)
  2. Kev Cotter - "The Bronx Executioner" (4:33)
  3. Allward - "Slowburst" (5:15)
Review: Chromatophore makes a head turning debut in the world of vinyl with a various artists EP that reaches all points of the electro spectrum. Plant43 will be no stranger to those in the know and opens up in urgent fashion with the synth waves and driving grooves of 'European Tides'. Kev Cotter gets a little more introspective and deep in his complex 'The Bronx Executioner' with a mood bassline underpinning the whole thing. The most experimental of the lot is Allward's closing gem 'Slowburst,' a mix of shimming synths and disappearing pads that leave you floating adrift in the skies.
