What The AI Decides

Step 01 (5:46)
UFO (5:47)
Love, Death & Robots (5:20)
Heart wave (5:18)
Review: Belarus-based producer Viikatory follows up on sterling drops for Juicy Gang, Mutual Pleasure and International Chrome to deliver this sure-footed plate to Austrian electro staple Trust. 'Step 01' opens the record up in urgent, punchy style with a battle-hardened beat and the gnarliest of synth lines, while 'UFO' amps up the electroid synth tweaking to devastating effect. 'Love, Death & Robots' has a crisp, uptempo approach which edges towards ghettotech and 'Heatwave' lays on the chunky analogue synth lines to make this a varied exploration of all the forms electro can take in the modern era.

Copepods (5:48)
Ultraviolet (6:20)
Counter-illumination (5:36)
Vortex Storm (6:51)
Review: Versalife is a master of the deep and one of many aliases from the Dutchman born Boris Bunnik. From dub to techno to the electro he explores here, his grainy sound is impossibly atmospheric. 'Copepods' opens up with far-sighted and sustained chords that speak of a future metropolis and 'Ultraviolet' then rides a lush broken rhythm and has melodies that glow like fireflies. 'Counter-illumination' gets more turbulent with its edgy lines and rubbery reverberating bassline and 'Vortex Storm' is like a reflective hall of mirrors with tension and eeriness in the air.

Alex Cortex X D Tiffany - "We Run Your Life" (6:23)
Microthol X Clatterbox - "Intertronic" (5:12)
DL/MS X VC-118A - "Tides" (5:58)
Review: The TRUST XY series continues to yield outstanding explorations of where electro can and should head from here, guided by some of the best on the business. This project is all about crossing over interesting artists for unique results and so we get to see what happens when the likes of Versalife and Stenny pool their considerable talents. One of the most intriguing link ups is Microthol and Clatterbox, who lay down a full-fat, inventive strain of big room electro, while Alex Cortex and D Tiffany lock into something more streamlined and effective for the DJs out there. DL-MS and VC-118A are the ones to bring the deep side of the spectrum with their gorgeous 'Tides'.

Track 5 (2:17)
Review: You might not yet know the name Velvet Skin but you will surely know of VIL, a top-level Portuguese techno producer who co-founded the Hayes Collective. He has already impressed on labels like Klockworks but embraced a new electro sound for this project which arrives on Eupasia. There is a purity to his sound that is compelling from the word go. Track one begins with squirreling synths, pinging cowbells and dark bass and then things grow more frantic and paranoid on track two, trippy on track three and then slow down to get sludgy and acidic on track four. Track five ends with atmospheric ambient swampiness.

Review: Jersey City-based Jorge Velez has long been one of the US underground's most revered figures to those in the know. Largely predating the current fascination with lo-fi analogue productions, something shown on the excellent MMT Tape Series compilation which delved into his early archives, his work as Professor Genuis on Italians Do It Better and Thisisnotanexit was followed by the conceptual Hassan LP on L.I.E.S. which provided a soundtrack to an imaginary film based on a shadowy Middle Eastern cult formed in the 11th century. Here Velez return to Ron Morelli's stable with Territories, a six-track LP that passes through "menacing drones to EBM influenced floor tracks to Sakamoto-esque melodic experiments," with a "distinct atmosphere suitable for home listening or adventurous club play." Even for those who are familiar with the odd structures Velez creates with his hardware, this is a wild trip worthy of much closer inspection.

Reversible Dream (6:37)
Unconditional Love (5:45)
Animae (6:23)
Destino Lontano (5:49)
Review: You always know that any new 12" from Bordello A Parigi is going to come doused in electric synth work and bright melodies. Voodoos & Taboos do just that on this retro-future new outing, the Reversible Dream EP. The title cut races out of the blocks, awash with glassy pads and prickly percussive grooves, robot vocals and raw beats. 'Unconditional Love' rides on more lush arps, this time with a slightly more melancholic feel. 'Animae' is a stomping disco-house workout with angular beats and prying leads and 'Destino Lontano' closes out with a brilliantly psychedelic comedown sound perfect for after the rave.

Review: Wherein Dutchman Vincent lays down a heartfelt study of the soul entitled 'Pre Melancholy'. His findings are as follows... Before the melancholy one can expect a wave of emotions and pressures, all of them ingredients for a tumultuous storm that flies in a whole flurry of directions. Technoid drum & bass causing anxiety with every rolling fill ('Mono No Aware'), timeless breaks triggering moments of unsolicited joy ('Agent Of Distraction') and spacious leftfield that's so disarming and abyssal that it comes in two forms ('Yonghegong Lama Temple Exit F'). Embrace the melancholy.

Shockwave (6:39)
Outerworld (6:43)
Reverse Psychology (6:09)
Space Trap (4:24)
Review: Dutch titan Orlando Voorn was always a European with a musical sound that linked us to Detroit and Chicago. As well as house and techno he can also do searing electro bangers too as this Outerworld EP on Trust shows. It's potent tackle for peak times, with 'Shockwave' a collision of drums and percussion and wild spraying synths, then 'Outerworld' taking on a ghetto flex with more kinetic drum funk. 'Reverse Psychology' then slows it down to a more atmospheric and spaced-out vibe and 'Space Trap' is an experimental broken beat that is the best track on the EP.

Sun
Review: Venda brings a deft touch to this new EP on French label Perceive which is now approaching its tenth release. In that time it has excelled at serving up tasteful minimal sounds of which we have more here. 'No Visitors' kicks off with bubbling bass and delicate wispy melodies that make for a dreamy late night vibe. 'Out Of Range' is a deep and dubby cut with phased effects and nice undulation in the rhythm while 'Claire' is a little more abstract and heads down for the afters. 'Sun' completes the quartet with a streamlined minimal tech sound.

VSO - "Sinking" (5:02)
VSO - "Complacency" (5:02)
Review: Human Behind Pluto, johnfaustus and VSO all contuse to this new split red vinyl from Zodiak Communte. Human Behind Pluto goes first with a warp speed, electro-tinged techno track that has a knack-snapping beat and brilliantly mangled acid line. Johnfaustus's 'Red Sonjia' is dark and twisted electro from the underworld and VSO offers two sick jams: 'Sinking' is a bumping and coruscated bit of electro-crunk and 'Complacency' is a dense full flavour cosmic assault with fearless drum programming and plenty of suspenseful synths. This one takes no prisoners and comes with its own unique insert.

Review: Orlando Voorn has always been a vital link between the US and European techno scenes but he is just as adept at cooking up fresh electro sounds. It is that headspace that he is in here with this typically deep three-track offering on the Partout label. It is a journeying selection from the off as 'OV Chatterbox' layers up the heavy drums with squealing leads and prickly acid. 'Know The Ledge' is an off-grid jumble of bleeping electronics and crunchy rhythms then 'Baby' spins out on filtered loops and jungle sound effects that manage to sound summary and bright while also making for a physical groove.

Interstellar Fugitives 2: Post Emancipation Psychosis
DJ S2 - "Post Emancipation Psychosis" (Von Floyd Lithium mix) (3:27)
Von Floyd - "Geiger Counter" (3:08)
Review: Underground Resistance likely owe much of their mythology to the Interstellar Fugitives series; a classic series telling the tale of the UR clique fighting oppression and music-industry corruption on a cosmic scale. It's certainly an experimental delight for most newcomers to the techno genre and/or those who want to trace the history of the sound. DJ S2 (aka. Suburban Knight) and Von Floyd (aka. Gerald Mitchell) are infamous members of the UR gang; both of them have enjoyed success in the genre, and as part of the clique, since at least the late 1980s. 'Post Emancipation Psychosis' is a classic slab of UR's anarchic, ironic militancy. With its orderly drum machine march, the eponymous track by S2 describes the paranoia and loss of mental clarity one might after having been freed from the coercive clutches of a former master; meanwhile, Floyd's 'Geiger Counter' is a super-early electro classic, channelling a bursting, radioactive soundbank even few producers today could replicate.

Straight UP (7:52)
Review: With roots in electro, hip-hop, house and techno, you can never quite be sure what Orlando Voorn will serve up next. On this top-notch ten-inch single - his first for NOUN - he's in full on techno mode, puffing out his chest and striding confidently towards peak-time dancefloors. The legendary Dutch producer first offers up 'Infinite Voyage', a slamming, warehouse-ready workout that wraps buzzing, mutant electronic lead lines and star-fall around stomping beats and booming bass. On 'Straight UP' he opts for darker, bolder, stabbing bass, alien-sounding bleeps, jazzy synth stabs, heady aural textures and another tough-as-teak drum track.

Review: We cannot get enough of Washington, DC-based label Peoples Potential Unlimited. It deals in a particular brand of lo-fi funk and disco with a hit of the leftfield about it. This time out they unearth some lost recordings from Landyhill (Timex Social Club) Bay Area funk. It has the rude girl vocals of Jamie Vallo over crunchy beats, squeaking synth motifs and raw drum work. Word on the street is more demos have been found from the same era and are to be unveiled soon, but this previously unreleased jam is a great starter.

Review: Hessdalen is jam-packed with bustling, floor-friendly electro inspired by deep space and produced in Reykjavik. The title track races along at quite a lick thanks to bustling beatbox drums, rumbling 808 bass and bleeping melodies, while "We'll Be Alright" sees the publicity-shy producer reach for the TB-303 on a deep, woozy and intergalactic IDM shuffler. You'll find spacey dub influences bubbling to the surface on EP highlight "Time Travel", before closer "Alien People" sees Volruptus celebrate the "braindance"-era Rephlex catalogue with the assistance of ragged acid lines, dreamy chords and high-octane machine drums.

The Last Window Of Time (6:35)
Animal Queendom (6:32)
All Together (6:27)
Review: Daniela La Luz is no stranger to Rawax's stable of labels - she's previously released on most of them at different points over the last decade- though Global Transformation marks the first time she's appeared on any of them as Vanilla. The Berlin-based artist sets her stall out with the raw, punchy and occasionally sparkling title track - all woozy keyboard riffs, weighty electro-meets-house beats, tipsy chords and heavy bass - before opting for a deep, druggy, acid-fired and percussively propulsive vibe on 'The Last Window of Time'. Elsewhere, 'Animal Queendom' sees her wrap echoing, dubbed-out and reverb-laden synth riffs around a tough and locked-in beat, while 'All Together' is built around the twin attractions of sturdy, slightly off-kilter machine drums and jazzy electric piano motifs.

System Shock (6:34)
Review: Boris Bunnik's Versalife alias continues to be a productive outlet for his electro-techno fantasies, as he follows swiftly on from the Chronoception album for 20:20 Vision with this varied 12" for Natural Selection. 'Overclock' layers up the lithe, punchy rhythm section with some outstanding modulated pings and pongs to create a widescreen, high-definition kind of electro. 'Luminous Idle State' takes a deeper dive into ambient pads and warm, strafing baselines, while 'Ghosting' has a more taut, nervy feel to it. 'System Shock' completes the set with a striking lead line which sounds like it's been run through a vocoder to give the sense of the machines finding their own voice.

Review: If you like cosmic, celestial electro that very much takes you on a trip to the stars then add this one to basket immediately. It is a new EP of dreamy signals and otherworldly transmissions on Dream Ticket from Von Ebner who is a master of his machines and speaking through them. The opener is a smooth cruise that eventually becomes a slick acid workout, then 'Wired Gardens' is more nervy and unsettled. 'Lamda' is a a mix of frantic drum programming and the most lush and zoned-out ambient pad work and 'Caustic Solipsism' rides a neck-snapping rhythm to close out a fine trip.

Review: A decade long collaboration between Clement Cosset and Tom Nomine, Veronique Samsung have channeled their electronic experiments through improvisation with analogue machines and a guitar, without turntables or computer. The Nantes-based duo intends to bring back their live shows in the club, accompanied by stunning visual effects. Recorded with the help of homeboy Simo Cell, the artwork and the song titles on Departements D'outre Tombe evoke the desertification of the countryside, as well as ongoing social and climatic changes. Whether it's the celestial, neon-lit electro groove of 'Mystere De L'Agriculture', the Detroit acid influence of the mesmerising epic 'Exode Brutal' or introspective off-kilter beats as heard on the title track - this is one of the week's highlights.

Review: This is a special sampler 12" taken from the Various Artists compilation Defend Your Planet that Avoidant Records put out. It features a heavyweight crew of electro mainstays, first of which are The Advent & Zein Ferreira. Their 'Defend Your Plane' is a turbo powered cosmic assault with skewed synths and high speed drums. Assembler Code's 'Line Of Sight' doesn't let up, powering on through sheet metal snares and juddering drum programming and then man like Carl Finlow layers in prickly melodies, dark sci-fi energy and booming bass. Analogue master Versalife shits things down with the shadowy 'SH09.'

'ID' opens up with high speed and clipped techno funk and plenty of rattling synth sounds. 'Track 8' is no less punishing with loopy breaks and thudding bass combining to superb post-jungle effect. Ionescu kicks off with 'Low Ride Her,' a balmy mix of lithe synths and cosmically minded pads that unfurl over fresh beats. Review: Two And Half Records make the decision here to try and rid the A and B-side distinction on records that we are all very familiar with and instead they refer to each face of their latest 12" as 'dance' and 'listen.'' It makes sense frankly and is often how things go anyway. Swiss duo Quismi kick off this one with twitchy and narcotic tech house with an old school bent. French artist Groenogen then gets wild with bright melodies and grinding synths, r&b vocals and high speed tech funk on 'Twinkle Dance' while ILyes offers the tech silkiness of 'Starting Now.' On the flip is a trio of less direct, more experimental sounds that sure do offer plenty to get lost in on headphones.

Valerio Vaudano soundtracks the end of the party with a big house bouncer full of vamping chord energy and euphoric little vocal stabs that cannot fail to send people home happy. 'Celebrity' opens up with some snappy drum work and forlorn chords that make for a nice zoned out groove, then 'Calcio' gets more poppy and playful in its neat synth melodies and jaunty tech beats/ perfect for some summer action once the days warm up again, then the B-side offers 'Talk Box' for more twisted moments and the sleek cosmic melodies and innocent pads of 'ACDC.'

Bundesautobahn 98 EP

Bundesautobahn 98 (7:50)
Bundesautobahn 98 (DJ Overdose remix) (5:49)
Magic Carpet Ride (5:38)
Magic Carpet Ride (Cardopusher remix) (6:03)
Review: Volta Cab mints the new Hypress label with two original tracks of his signature electro, which has previously found a home on labels like Bordello A Parigi and MM Discos. 'Bundesautobahn 98' is a romantic, uplifting piece with stirring keys pealing out over the crisp beats, while 'Magic Carpet Ride' has a freakier mission which heads straight into the dark basements of EBM and coldwave. DJ Overdose offers a remix of 'Bundesautobahn 98' which strips things down to a gravelly pulse, and then Cardopusher tackles 'Magic Carpet Ride' and turns it into bubbling acid workout to set the death disco off good n' proper.

Review: Islenskur turbonutter, Volruptus, contorts your expectations for the third and final 12" on International Chrome in 2023, 'basssalina yeee', reciprocating 2021's huge collaboration with Jensen Interceptor on the former's Sweaty Records imprint. Endlessly inventive, the five tracks on the EP stretch and warp the concept of electro and bass music into new dimensions, all by adding just the right amount of odd, whether in the form of spaced out filters, unexpected pauses, or non-repetition. From the space shanty of 'Ibex' (which unsurprisingly for a track at 160bpm slaps just as hard when slowed right down) to the slightly more traditional hardcore of 'Brain Computer Interface', Volruptus wrings new sounds out of the traditional warp and weft whilst never forsaking the dancefloor.

Review: The music of Russian producer Volta Cab is known for is blend of post-punk, synthwave and downtempo elements, resulting in a dark and cosmetic plod though nightmarish yet cartoonish sonic backstreets. Like living somewhere sun-soaked in the 1980s and bowling down the road in the the driver's seat of a car that converts into a giant mechanised owl at night, the tracks here are at once sinister and sultry. Catch the tonal shift on the B-side, however, where the EP undergoes a sea-change into Meat-Beat style electro.
