Ghettoboom Vol 1
Ghettoboom Vol 1 (12" + sticker + MP3 download code limited to 300 copies)
Cat: FCR 008. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. 1905 - "Recorddeals" (3:12)
  2. DJ Pirna - "Booty Snapper" (4:05)
  3. Vulvareen & 1905 - "Get Your Head Bust" (3:30)
  4. DJ Pirna - "Cars Fo Women" (4:03)
  5. Vulvareen - "Jerk In The Sand, Sleep In That Sand" (4:18)
  6. 1905 - "Sometimes Sweet, Sometimes Salty" (4:30)
Review: Former City launch what will presumably be new various artist sears here with Volume 1 of Ghettoboom. It features two tracks each by three different artists on a super limited 12" that has a healthy dose of streetwise swagger. There are rave samples and big breaks on 1905's 'Recorddeals' while DJ Pirna gets for a more soul soothing and loved up vocal vibe on his super sweet bumper 'Booty Snapper. Bringing a third different sound is 'Get Your Head Bust', a high speed, lo-fi techno cut with turbo claps. The flip also features footwork style club tracks, lush deep house and urgent floor pumpers. This one covers lots of ground in real style

Vortex Traks X
  1. Marshall Applewhite - "Better Do Not" (4:04)
  2. Forehard - "Rhythm Device" (6:07)
  3. Das Ding - "Analog Devices" (6:54)
  4. VCS2600 - "Modular Deivce" (4:29)
Review: The tenth missive on Vortex Traks is full to bursting with tasty treats. As with many of the Berlin-based imprint's previous outings, it's a multi-artist affair. Marshall Applewhite kicks things off via the deep electro/dusty IDM fusion of "Better Do Not", where eight-bit electronics and undulating acid-style motifs rise above a crunchy beat, before Forehard attempts to batter dancefloors into submission via the full-throttle, Klakson-style Rotterdam electro filth of "Rhythm Device". Das Ding invites us to party in deep space via the high-tempo beats and swirling, some would say psychedelic electronics of "Analog Devices", before VCS2600 serves up some seriously punchy, acid-fired electro ("Modular Device").

Cat: DKMNTL 10YEARS01. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Gigi Masin - "Maja" (10:43)
  2. Vakula - "Robot Fuck The System" (6:45)
  3. Roman Flugel - "Mice On Stick" (6:38)
Review: Gird yourselves; starting from this month and running through until December, Dutch institution Dekmantel are celebrating a decade in the game with a series of monthly 12"s featuring a seriously all-star cast from Tony Allen to Villalobos. It starts right here as legendary innovative composer Gigi Masin opens with the lilting, delicate "Maja", Vakula brings us down from the clouds and back to the future with the body-jacking ghetto bump of "Robot Fuck The System" while Flugel blows the finale horn with the swampy Amazonian harmonic trip-out "Mice On Stick". This is the start of something very special.

Exit Planet Earth: Nitrogen
Exit Planet Earth: Nitrogen (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EPE 03. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. Radioactive Man - "One Out" (6:09)
  2. Annie Hall - "Invisible Dust" (5:10)
  3. Sansibar - "Tamagotchi" (7:28)
  4. VC-118A - "Moss" (5:55)
Review: 20/20 Vision continue to celebrate their renewed electro vigour with the third part in the Exit Planet Earth series, once again calling on a crack team of machine funkers to deliver the robo-goods. Radioactive Man is up first with 'One Out', which finds the original Lone Swordsman on impeccable form teasing and testing his rubbery synth flex around a needlepoint groove. Annie Hall follows up in fine style with the dreamy lilt of 'Invisible Dust', while Sansibar locks into something a little dirtier on the dungeon boogie of 'Tamagotchi'. VC-118A's 'Moss' completes the set in a spellbinding fashion, dropping the tempo for something a little more exploratory with plenty of mystical atmospheres and tweaked FX fills marking out an evocative soundscape.

  2. Dj Problems - "Calculate" (feat Dednewb) (4:38)
  3. TRQ 30 - "001" (5:42)
  4. DJ Overdose - "010-070" (4:27)
  5. Interviews - "Reasonating" (6:03)
  6. Varum - "Crackmeyer" (4:32)
Review: Leipzig label Hypress has gone compilation crazy of late, with this six-track effort being the imprint's third multi-artist excursion of recent times. We're not complaining though, because the Reso EP boasts some seriously sturdy, mind-altering electro fare. For proof, check the buzzing, acid-electro intensity of DJ Problems', 'Calculate', the lo-fi, industrial-electro sleaziness of Swam Intelligence's 'Ketter', and the punchy-cut-spacey electro classicisms of 'Resonating' by Interviews. The EP also includes some more balanced, melodious and picturesque fare, including a superbly positive excursion from Varum (the psychedelic electronics and blissful lead lines of 'Crackmeyer') and a typically high-grade workout from DJ Overdose (the bubbly bass, swirling synths and bustling drums of '010-070').

  3. Solipsism - "Vice Is Nice"
  4. Nyquist - "Fornax"
  5. Analogue Audio Association - "Antikorper"
  6. Cyan341 - "What's Going On"
  7. Mick Chillage - "From Ripples"
Review: After years spent supporting the underground IDM scene digitally, Glasgow label Ambidextrous makes the leap to vinyl with this killer compilation of ear-catching deep techno and electronica. Christ brings a bubbling range of synth tones to "Rom" before Norken and Nyquist drop some brooding electro tones over rolling beats on"Od Detot". Solipsism has a more sassy house sound to impart, while Nyquist goes into full electro mode on his own. On the flip, Analogue Audio Association have some edgy acid to throw down, Cyan341 brings a touch of boogie flex to the record and Mich Chillage rounds the record off with emotive outboard electronics of a reflective nature.

  1. Golden Taurus (5:47)
  2. Topaz Fear (7:02)
  3. Death Wish (6:50)
  4. Golden Taurus (Heinrich Dressel remix) (5:52)
Review: Crimes Of The Future is the kind of label you can trust, no matter who is at the controls. The same could be said for Giallo Disco, and certainly the two labels orbit a similar space for lurid soundtrack-inspired hardware jams from the Italo age. Vercetti Technicolor is one half of the Giallo team alongside Antoni Maiovvi, and here steps out with a perfectly bombastic range of compositions that revel in B-movie brilliance. "Golden Taurus" is the perfect slow-burner, those mono bass notes warming like no soft synth ever could, while "Topaz Fear" brings a more action-driven sequence into the mix. "Death Wish" too opts for a pumped up club scenario, while Heinrich Dressel smokes out "Golden Taurus" into a seedy slow-jam.

Review: Dutch mainstay Boris Bunnik is an absolute machine who has been turning out a consistent stream of high quality music for an almost unbelievable amount of time. He has a glut of monikers for a dizzying array of sounds but as Versalife he makes aquatic electro in the same lineage as Detroit greats Drexcyia. Here he goes for a moody opener in 'Synapse' which rocks back and forth on a heady loop, while 'Fractal' cuts loose on more journeying drums and bass that take you into the future. The flip side offers another pair of expertly designed and hugely atmospheric electro cuts for those who like it deep.

  3. Recirculator (7:18)
  4. Gravitational Anomaly (6:32)
Review: Versalife is of course one of the many aliases of prolific Dutch artist Conforce. This one is reserved for club ready electro and comes on the Trust label out of Austria. As always these tracks are exquisite analogue explorations with multiple things going on a once, from burrowing basslines to squealing synths, bright, shiny pads to grittier drums. There is darkness on the opener "Neogenesis" before more celestial styles on "Cosmic Language." "Recirculator" drops into a thumping techno groove and "Gravitational Anomaly" steals the show at the end with its suggestive rhythm and lithe synth work.

Review: Blind Allies are an unstoppable force in the slimy underbelly of electro right now, and they're back with another shell shocker on the bounce from Zeta Reticula's "Sonic Assault". This time around Void Cells (Bristol-based Latvian producer Aleksejs Apolskis) makes a pointed return following the digital release Perception Model back in 2018. The drums rain down hard on this record, not least on punchy electro bruiser "SHE". NX1 offers up a rabble rousing techno twist on the original, before "Saturated Faces" opens up the B side with another fist-shaking slab of 4/4. Behind the grubby demeanour of the music lies some serious craft, making this a must-check for those looking in the more interesting corners of the electro boom.

Review: There's no getting away from the dancefloor-ready moments on this latest addition to the ongoing exclusive compilation series from the Touched and Further Electronix stables. Featuring a host of legendary names from the electronic and dance music worlds, it's leaning to the rave-ier side of electro and techno and makes a strong case for doing away with anything that isn't unashamedly down with the strobes.

Or at least those are the tracks that immediately leap out - Humanoid's typically sensory electro assault on 'Tower', 808 State's 7AM anthem, 'Ariel', and 'Monster', a hardcore-infused beast by Corporeal Face. But there's another, subtler side at play here, too, with John Beltran's ghostly, jungle-garage beauty 'When It Rains', and the deep chugging moodiness of 'Clouds Are Made In Factories' by Anders Liar. Basically buy this album now, copies won't last. And we're not just saying that because we're the shopkeepers.

Review: Analogical Force mark their 30th release with a bumper collection of electro remixes from some heavyweight names and like-minded friends. Across all 12 tracks, and six sides of vinyl., the label broadens its remit with various new electro perspectives making this their most vital offering to date. There is restless brilliance from Samuel Kerridge, brutal sound waves from Humanoid and superbly slick, funk and deep tackle from the one and only Radioactive Man. The ever excellent Plaid also serve up a raw highlight with their broken beat workout.

Review: Russia's Gost Zvuk label has long been a firm favourite here in the Juno office. Their glitchy, mysterious, futuristic music always makes for intriguing listening and now they celebrate five fantastic years with a compilation featuring a host of closely associated talents old and new. The bumper triple vinyl collection features paranoid experimental ambient that draws to mind covert spying operations, mangled machine music like INFX's "Damaged +dn", haunting modulated synth soundscapes from OL and skeletal techno rhythms that rewire your brain like Erofeev's "11bng". It all makes for a genuinely fresh and original collection of hugely provocative music.

Review: Parisian alt-pop house Cracki return with a third instalment of their curious Memoires D'Elephant collection. Once again loaded with some of the label's brightest and most endearing artists across the cosmic pop, alt electro and deep house axis, this time highlights include Menage A Trois' Everything But The Girl-style lament 'Be Right Back', the playful digital Tropicana of LeonxLeon's 'Rokanbo', the sunset jazz of Chassol's 'Music Is God My Love' and the lively, up-tempo squiggles and giggles of Eliott & Voiski's brilliantly-titled 'The Friendship Spacecake'. And that's just the tip of this immaculately packaged double 12" iceberg. Beats you'll never forget.

Review: Germany's cult mindcolormusic celebrates ten years at the forefront with a bumper, limited edition triple vinyl package that draws on all their key talents. It's an escapist affair that mixes up IDM, electro, acid, breaks and electronica into an intergalactic collection of tracks that work for home listening as well as for nights out. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, but EG111111's serene "Eg & The Sea" is a standout. Jerry La Flim's "Glass People" is a score for a film you wish you had composed, and things grow increasingly unhinged and experimental on Caramel Chameleon's "Gele Kamer". What a ride.

Review: On "Bubble Chamber", Swiss label Gentrified Underground pays tribute to Detroit electro legends via a compilation - and accompanying 56-page booklet - featuring music, images and words inspired by the publicity-shy group's work. Fittingly, it begins with a solo track by Drexciya's Donald Gerald as Xor Gate (the creepy, otherworldly modular ambience of "Hyperbola") and goes on to showcase cuts from contemporary producers that touch on various aspects of Drexciya's work. Highlights include the punchy, bass-heavy tech-funk of DJ Dijital's "I Am Morpheus", the shimmering undersea brilliance of Plant 43's "Evapotranspiration", the strangely swung electro/new wave futurism of Iko's "Approach On Tokyo" and the classic Drexciyan electro dystopia of Luz1E's "Transvision".

Review: We are honored to announce the debut album from Vin Sol, who's taken club-goers on a trip with his tracks and sets for the past two decades. Vin Sol is a third-generation San Franciscan of Salvadorean descent who has released on Unknown to the Unknown, Clone, Delft, Honey Soundsystem, and Ultramajic. His DJ sets expertly span the genres of house, electro, techno, italo, disco, soul, funk, and whatever other finds he digs up. He's also a musical partner of Matrixxman, AKA Charlie Duff, with whom he started the Soo Wavey label. His current focus is on the wild monthly party and label Club Lonely, which he runs with Primo Pitino and Jeremy Castillo. 'Planet Trash' consists of 10 tracks spread across 2 slabs of vinyl and a bonus flexi disc. Vin started working on the album in the winter of 2017 while taking a break from making club tracks. Simultaneously he also wanted to disconnect from the grip of the internet and 24 hour news cycle. Spending more time outside, he became entranced by the Bay Area fog. Sutro Tower wholly enveloped in mist is a view that inspired the ambient tracks on the album. You will also hear hints of the Latin freestyle and classic acid that informed Vin's youth. By spring of 2018 Vin headed to Berlin to finish the album and work on a collaboration with Matrixxman, an homage to SF musical institution Bottom of the Hill that kicks off side C. Vin's musical approach is honest, using the tools of the trade to both innovate upon and pay respect to classic forms. All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each copy is housed in a jacket using photos by Vin Sol, and designed by Kevin McCaughey of Boot Boyz Biz. It includes a 4-color giant newsprint fold-out poster and golden flexi disc.

Review: The latest missive on Bjarki's bonkers-but-brilliant BBBBBB label comes courtesy of label regular Volruptus. "First Contact" is the alien electro explorer's second album, following the release of an eponymous debut full length on Sweaty Records in 2016. It's a hugely inventive and entertaining affair, with Volruptus giddily flitting between skittish alien funk ("Tapetum Lucidum"), bass-heavy ghetto-tech insanity ("We Are The Cyborgs", "Butt Shakin' Freaks"), acid-fired workouts ("Chicxulub Space Rock"), melodious deep electro ("First Contact"), rave-addled brain-dance ("Hyperbola") and much more besides. It's the kind of album that keeps you guessing from start to finish, and there sadly aren't too many of those around.
