Sketches Of Silver
Sketches Of Silver (blue vinyl 12")
Cat: WEME 086. Rel: 20 Feb 24
Onyourmarks (4:48)
Sable (6:19)
Jack (4:52)
Cubed3 (4:53)
Silver City (5:09)
Review: Chromedealer's Sketches Of Silver EP is a collection of cuts that were originally recorded between 2021 and 2023 and now arrive on Belgium staple WeMe. They find the New York-based producer in scintillating form with opener ' Onyourmarks' fusing jungle and electro with masterful synth work to make for a thrillingly high-paced yet emotive rhythm from another world. 'Sable' is another track made from millions of seemingly small fragments of sound that all coalesce into a darker broken jungle soundscape then 'Jack' pairs lovely snappy snares and rolling amen breaks with celestial melodic sequences that drift up top. 'Cubed3' is more masterfully nimble drum programming and 'Silver City' brings a more melancholic mood to close.

Equi (6:27)
Aether (6:40)
Affinity (5:13)
Septagon (5:31)
Review: Carl Finlow really is the electro gift that keeps on giving. It seems like he drops new music on a near-weekly basis and it never dips in quality. This time he is on the We're Going Deep label and his music-making machines are in fine fettle. 'Equi' opens up with a sense of caution - the nimble drums and chrome-plated synths keeping you on edge, while 'Aether' unfurls into a widescreen and laid-back electro journey to the stars. There is more menace and bite to 'Affinity' with its superbly reverb-enriched kicks and 'Septagon' again cuts loose on playful melodic sequences.

Kawaii San - "Roller Derby" (7:13)
Kawaii San - "What U Got" (7:28)
Nathan Boost - "Whale Stuff" (6:20)
Nathan Boost - "Swingy Swang" (4:50)
Review: The New Year has brought with it an influx of many new labels that are all eager to get your attention. This one, BinarySound, is well deserving of it as it offers up this cosmic tech house exploration courtesy of Kawaii San and Nathan Boost. It is San who opens up with his retro-future and fulsome cut 'Roller Derby' before getting a little deeper and bringing some subtle acid to 'What U Got.' Boost shows a different side to tech house with 'Whale Stuff' having a more playful feel and wispy pads that shine bright. 'Swingy Swang' closes out with clipped, kinetic tech funk and garage percussive patterns that are super nice.

The Last EP
Cat: MC 065. Rel: 14 Mar 24
Automatik (6:37)
Loose End (5:41)
Rok Automatik (6:32)
The End (5:50)
Review: Mint Condition continues its run of strong reissues of house and techno music. Originally released on the cult label Robs records in 1995, Kilowatt's 'The Last EP' is finally getting the much deserved repress. Included is the wicked acid banger 'Loose End' which is a diamond of the mid-90s bleep house sound. 'The End' is another standout track on this release that gives us great memories of all the exciting IDM related going ons in the mid 90s - not least in the club of the same name - with echoes of 808 State from the late 80s too. Sometimes you aren't sure why a record's been reissued, but this one is definitely a worthy case. Expect these copies to go fast.

Kitchen Plug - "Cheat Code" (4:31)
CYMKA - "Sweet Peach" (8:12)
Batenko - "Inside Summer 21" (4:18)
Les Hauts - "Passing Clouds" (4:55)
Review: More proper tacker makes it way to vinyl here courtesy of the blow label who enlist four more producers of this latest various artists EP. Kitchen Plug's 'Cheat Code' marries the best of tech, garage, dub and house into a kinetic bit of body music that oozes warm and lo-fi soul. CYMKA brings kaleidoscopic colour and squelchy acid to 'Sweet Peach' then it's all pout old school piano rave madness from Batenko on 'Inside Summer 21'. Last of all is the searing electro funk of Les Hauts with 'Passing Clouds', a blisteringly quick trip into another dimension with some rueful chord work. Sensational EP.

What We’re On (5:43)
Primitive Holiday (feat Masayuki Tomita) (6:30)
Vicky’s Out 4 Blud (feat Nicolas Cage) (6:23)
The TS Chronicles (5:36)
Review: Lapse Records welcomes Los Primos here as they debut their excellent new EP Under-Stompin'. This fresh project is the brainchild of Toronto's Cosmic JD and Aaron Santos, both affiliated with the Hypnotic Mindscapes label and party collective. They showcase their singular take on tight, twitchy cosmic tech house across a quartet of its that start with the snappy snare work of 'What We're On' before 'Primitive Holiday' (feat Masayuki Tomita) is more raw and coarse with sharp hits and spraying basslines. 'Vicky's Out 4 Blud' (feat Nicolas Cage) takes things into a more cosmic direction and the 'The TS Chronicles' is a warped afters banger.

Who Dis
Who Dis (12")
Cat: LAD 077. Rel: 27 Feb 24
Who Dis (4:56)
Dance With Your Feet (ACD mix) (6:06)
Review: Having spent six years apart from one another, Marvin & Guy now reunite with Life and Death for two infectious tracks, breaking their two-year silence from original releases. Departing from their signature melodies, the duo presents minimalist compositions tailored for the dancefloor. Born from playful experimentation with a synthesiser bassline, these tracks boast distinctive rhythmic and harmonic shifts - the irresistible appeal of' 'Who Dis' is its fatness and apparently simplicity. Incorporating sounds like shattered glass and Formula 1 engine roars - both meticulously recorded for these tracks - the joy and fun of the creative process shines through in the music and results in effective good time party tracks.

Whatever You Want (5:31)
Communication Frequency (5:42)
Ominous (5:23)
The Mind & Motion (5:33)
Review: Seven months on from the release of his superb Schematics album on Gated Recordings, Keith Farrugia brings his Sound Synthesis project back to Orbital Mechanics, a no-nonsense, electro-focused imprint he founded two years ago. His EPs for the personal label (as in, it exists solely as a vehicle for his productions) usually sell out quickly, and we expect this one to be no different. He begins by wrapping fiendishly foreboding acid bass and reverb-laden lead lines around a punchy electro beat on 'Whatever You Want', before opting for an intergalactic sound on the more minimalistic 'Communication Frequency'. Over on side B, 'Ominous' lives up to its name via ghostly chords, bubbly electronics and slowly unfurling acid lines, while 'The Mind & Motion' is a deep and melancholic treat.

Acid Test 01.1 (reissue)
Cat: ACIDTEST 011. Rel: 28 Feb 24
Nonneo (5:08)
Mystified Acid (2024 rework) (6:55)
Nonneo (Donato Dozzy remix) (7:32)
Love & Sex Acid (5:52)
Review: Tin Man has been on a mission to find the human heart in his machines for many years now and it all started with Acid Test 01.1. This vintage package now gets reissued on his home label Acid Test and it is as alluring and heady now as it was back then, first time around. The way he bends and blends his 303, smears it across the subtle, soft, deep house and techno drums and allows it to make a lasting, lingering impression is second to none on the opener. From there a 2024 rework ups the energy slightly and then a Donato Doozy rework gets even deeper before 'Love & Sex Acid' closes in a warming fashion.
