Champion Sound
Cat: B 012. Rel: 13 Nov 20
  1. Champion Sound (5:44)
  2. Invaders (7:13)
Review: Following flirtations with the Trilogy Tapes and L.I.E.S, techno noise-maker Robert Bergman returns to Brew with two more intensely lo-fi club jams. He opens with 'Champion Sound', a throbbing and pulsating affair in which squelching acid motifs, fizzing electronic riffs and weird noise fight for attention atop a jacking and weighty techno beat. It's hard to describe and, as is his usual style, a touch messy in parts, but that's always been part of the charm of Bergman's decidedly dystopian music. Over on side B, 'Invaders' is a more sci-fi sounding affair, with the producer's usual mind-mangling noises and angular motifs coming accompanied by hybrid techno/electro beats, rising and falling TB-303 lines and deeply spacey pads.

Heartbreak (12" + insert)
Cat: OTLR 001. Rel: 13 Nov 20
  1. Heartbreak (4:25)
  2. 6000 Ft (5:40)
Review: Simon 'Bonobo' Green launches his own label Outlier, operating under the umbrella of Ninja Tune, the label - along with Tru Thoughts - that he's been most closely associated with. To kick things off, he's cooked up something suitably sizable with pal Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Lead cut 'Heartbreak' is an absolute beast and sounds like a future anthem in the making. Supposedly intended as a tribute to NYC disco but arguably nothing of the sort, it sees the pair pepper a bustling, bass-heavy, rave-style breakbeat groove with organ stabs, sparkling synth sounds and choice vocal snippets from Classic Action classic 'Weekend'. They explore far deeper, drowsier territory on the atmospheric, melody-driven flipside, '6000 Ft', once again opting to employ waves of colourful electronics and chunky low-end sounds.

Review: The mysterious C-Lektro continues to run anonymously amok with their crisp, authentic electro designs. As always in this white label series there's no info or track titles, just ice cold breakbeats, stark, emotional musicality and vibes across the spectrum; those in need of a deep space trip and layers of elements to get lost in head for the opening 'Track 1', those looking for more of a body high jump on the thick switchy beats of 'Track 4', those in need of turning inside out and hurling around the room go direct to the head-turning rudeness of 'Track 6'. Raw.

Cuts EP (12" reeditado)
Cat: BREAKFAST 000. Rel: 09 Nov 20
  1. Loft Lunar (8:19)
  2. Tenebrosys (7:34)
  3. Slippery Master (7:30)
  4. Nautravellius (7:27)
Review: New London based imprint Breakfast Musik inaugurate their label with a release by Uruguayan talent Cosmonaut: not to be confused with the Ukrainian superstar DJ of the same name. Real name Fede Jorcin from Montevideo, these retro flavoured jams will appeal to fans of the current sound of Berlin, emanating from the headquarters of Cabaret, Libertine or My Own Jupiter. Starting off with the deep bleep techno of "Loft Lunar" sounding like classic Stasis, the four to the floor electro of "Tenebrosys" up next really gets the party started. On the flip, there's a mellower strain of electro on "Slippery Master" (that's more reminiscent of Gosub) while the closing track "Nautravellius" goes out with a right blast: featuring that syncopated bang and clatter of vintage drum computers assisted by the funk of classic acid sounds.

Review: In case you didn't know, Machine Funk is a twelve part project from Cygnus and Alek Stark, who are behind Fundamental Records, 808 Box, Electric Eclectics and now Electro Records. This second part offers more classic electro rooted in cyber-punk aesthetics and a utopian cosmic future. The analogue machinery shines through, the popping hits and sleek basslines all working their way into your psyche. The first two cuts are deep voyaging affairs with mind expanding synths, while the flip gets more aggressive on 'Hypnotized' and somewhere in-between on the twisted 'Xeli Code Breakers.'

  4. Kalson - "Stellar Frequency" (5:22)
  5. Kalson - "Interstellar Probe" (6:06)
Review: With its sights set on deep space, the Stellar Mode label launches via a tidy 12" featuring tracks from two vastly experienced electro artists. Hanover's Dagobert Howe handles side A, offering up two tracks that add starburst electronic melodies and moody chords to warped bass and skittish electro beats ('Step Into Darkness', 'Eva'), and another that explores symphonic synthesizer ambient ('These Two Seconds', which reminded us of the late, great Pete Namlook). Vladan Cvetkovic dons his familiar Kalson alias on side B, going deep into squelchy, spacey and surging electro territory on the tough-but-funky 'Stellar Frequency', before unveiling the warm, dreamy and downright delicious electro/broken beat fusion of 'Interstellar Probe'.

  6. Out With Tha Old (4:12)
Review: Second time around for D.I.E's The Man You'll Never See Part 2, a near legendary set of bustling, funk-fuelled electro cuts that first surfaced on Clone back in 2003. This new edition includes five of the EP's six original tracks, replacing "Space Travel" with the similarly sought-after "Programming" - a Drexciya-esque workout rich in fizzing drum machine beats, rumbling sub-bass and deep space acid lines - which originally appeared on 2002's Keep Hanging EP. It remains a superb set of tracks, all told, with the Motor City duo flitting between deep and melodious cuts ("Other People"), vocal-laced Cybotron tributes ("Keep Hanging"), decidedly intergalactic fare ("Out With Tha Old") and quirky, glassy-eyed gems ("U Can't See Us").

Review: Incy wincy Walid El Barbir dons his DJ Web guise for this stark set of analogue fusions. Blurring the lines between every genre this side of 1990s hardcore, Traditions 16 is a melting pot exploration that brings in elements of new romantic pumps ('Nos Noctium Dominarium'), swampy big beat drama ('Chaosophia777') dense, acidic new beat ('Extinction For The Psychic Sustenance') sleazy rock ('616 The Number Of The Beat') and plenty more in between. A truly unique experience, if you enjoyed Wilid's output as Les Points, you'll be all over this.

  4. "43" (3:55)
Review: Another week, another killer electro outing from Dmx Krew. This one is a rather surprising one even for an artist who has done as much as Ed Upton, however: it's an EP of Level 42 covers that remoulds the English jazz-funk band as a collection of future funk robots. A real labour of love and a sincere tribute to the band Upton loved as a youth, 'Turn It On', 'Love Games' and '43' are the tracks he tackles. They all came on the Isle of Wight band's much acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1981 and here are kept true to their originals, but with plenty of synths and drum machines in place of the live instruments and a vocoder doing all the vocal work. The results will bring a smile to anyone's face.

Review: DMX Krew has had his own electro sound forever. He keeps on minding new veins within it each and every time he releases new music, which is pretty damn often despite how long he has been in the game. His latest is a double album on Terrestrial Funk that covers all aspects of his sound. There are playful melodies and squelchy bass on the opener but soon things move into more rugged dance floor territory on 'Ghost Bubble' while 'Deluge' keeps the spirit of Drexcyia alive. Brilliantly sci-fi in style, crisp in design and infectious in terms of its grooves, this is another master class from DMX Krew and his machines.

Review: Massive synth action here from the man like Kid Machine as he follows up this year's earlier release Traditions 15 with the highly limited five-tracker 'Lone Wolf'. Hitting hard with the uplift, 'Atomik War' hits with such thrust you can hear the likes of Yazoo in the vibrant riff. Elsewhere 'Lone Wolf' takes us back to early German trance before 'Stolen Dream' and 'UMANO' dig deep into melodic synthwave with strong layers and harmonies. Finally we 'Intelligent Design' closes on a deliciously widescreen and slo-mo note. Only 300 pressed; you'll be howling if you miss this.

Review: There's no stopping Danny Wolfers, who has still managed to release two albums as Legowelt this year despite a raging pandemic and a crippling economic downturn. He's predictably on form again on his first outing for Lapsus offshoot C.E.E, giddily moving between a range of sparkling, synth-heavy outings that encapsulate all that is good about his analogue-rich productions. We're really enjoying opener 'Santiago Chile Arp Track', where sparkling electronic melodies and mind-warping TB-303 lines rise and fall above a jacking techno drum track, while title track 'System Shapeshift' is amongst the most psychedelic, punchy and potent electro tracks he's ever released. Also worth a look is the early Orbital-ish trip that is 'Live in Transnistria', not to mention the stuttering heaviness of strobe-lit acid onslaught 'My Dad Was a Lifeguard'.

Review: The second drop on Hearlucinate comes correct with some more of that nasty party-starting tackle you want to make sure you're packing in your utility belt. The 'Bum Jump' mix of Ron Obvious' 'Tugging' kicks off the A side with a cheeky swing, bendy acid line and nimble organ licks to give you a loose and lively 90s flavour, which carries on through to the break-speckled acid funker 'Elixic 3'. On the B side, Tristan Da Cunha gets locked into a tunnelling tech house shuffle with plenty of ruff n' tuff attitude on the 'Tushy Dub' of 'Bass Penetration'. Then Da Cunha dons his Freakenstein alias to slap down the body-poppin', bleep-tastic electro funk of 'Thafonk' for all the B-girls and B-boys.

Review: Fresh from dropping a fine mini-album on Djak-Up-Bitch (DUB), rave-loving electronic fusionist Quadratschulz (real name Carsten Schulz) pops up on Golden Pudel's admired Pudul Produkte label for the very first time. It's a rather cheery and ear-pleasing collection all told, with the sometime Shipwrec artist focusing on combining cheery and colourful synthesizer melodies with a variety of eccentric, on-point machine rhythms. The pick of the bunch is arguably surging opener 'Duke of Sealand', where Schulz usual sparkling electronic lead lines dance away atop skittish, high-octane beats and a rubbery, funk-fuelled bassline. That said, there are plenty of treats elsewhere across the EP, with the classic '90s IDM flex of 'Gestalt' and the deliciously tactile, acid-flecked deep house colour of 'I Don't Believe' standing out.

Review: Get your magnons out for the dance... Magnonic Signals (the label who impressively sell their digital releases at L1000) return with their first V/A EP. Liverpool's Reedale Rise starts the show with the emotional bends and flutters of 'Anatalia' while Darren Nye maintains the emotive theme on the deeper, Detroitian 'Beyond The Stars'. Meanwhile on the B; Mihall P and Spin Fidelity (who both had the honour of being on the label's launch release last year) return with two more moments. Erring more on the side of techno 'Past Lives' struts with a strong 4/4 flare before 'To Tha Outta Limits' brings us home via the edge of the known electro universe. Show us some signal!

Review: On his previous EPs and singles for the likes of Natural Sciences and Emotsiya, Vaseline Sunny Seppa AKA Sansibar has proved adept at delivering otherworldly, off-kilter electro that pairs icy melodies with warm chords, angular acid lines and beats that pop and crackle with giddy dancefloor intensity. "Targeted Individuals", his debut album, expands on this, in part by wrapping his futurist visions in emotive chord sequences, melancholic motifs and occasional bouts of paranoid intensity. It's a blueprint that guarantees far-sighted and ear-catching thrills, with the album's brazen club cuts - see the foreboding hustle of "My Mind" and deliciously Kraftwerkian "Body Rock" - being outnumbered by deeper, more contemplative compositions. Impressive.

Review: From Madrid with love: Man of many aliases Fabio Vinuesa (DJ Doma, Sacred Things, Vacuum Exploration) introduces us to brand new Spanish label Distritio 91 with the crisp analogue soul of 'Altered Sequences'. Traditional electro from the off, the title track sets to the tone and pace. Stripped right back to bare pads and twinkling 303s, it's followed by the darker, dubbier drones of 'Dance Pattern' before we flip some slightly harder dancefloor tackle; 'Multilevel' is a switchy, glitchy acid swamp wriggler while 'Infected System' shuts the EP down with glacial waves of acid paranoia. Ice cold.

Review: As if his Musar-released album Resa wasn't quite enough electronic soul soothing this year, experimental producer Jacob Wiltshire returns with another super-limited offering in the form of Aux 4424. A much more dancefloor-focused affair, taking in strong doses of breakbeat, bleep bass, jungle and electro, it's a dark, tense side to the Berlin-based producer. Highlights include the early J Majik style two-step slices on 'Land Of Dreams', the dub techno and jungle bubbles of 'Cornish Yarg' and the gentle breakbeat climax of the finale 'Hig'. Grab it while you can.
