Review: Small Changes is the eagerly-anticipated follow-up to Michael Kiwanuka eponymous third LP, Kiwanuka. Produced alongside soul, hip-hop and pop production legends Danger Mouse and Inflo, Small Changes was recorded between London and LA, with this core triumvirate nonetheless expanding further into an assembly of session musical delegates, including legendary bassist Pino Palladino, as well as Jimmy Jam of the iconic Jam And Lewis songwriting and production duo. A welcome return for one of Britain's most talented songwriters, vocalists, and guitarists.

Review: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings' latest album Woodland is a beacon to their enduring partnership and unwavering consistency. Named after their long-standing studio, which survived two tornadoes, the album reflects the duo's resilience and creativity. With a mix of lush yet sparse arrangements, the ten tracks are beautifully recorded by Rawlings, emphasising vocals and guitar. The songwriting is at its peak, with lyrics that resonate deeply, evoking a sense of both melancholy and warmth. Highlights include 'What We Had' and 'Lawman,' where their harmonies are so tight, they sound like siblings. Woodland is a meticulously crafted album that rewards careful listening with Welch and Rawlings at their best.

Review: Soft Machine and Gong founder Christopher David "Daevid" Allen came of age under the influence of the Beat Generation writers while working in a Melbourne bookstore around 1960. The Australian psychedelic visionary then travelled to Paris, where he stayed at the infamous Beat Hotel, before heading to England, where his musical career really began. The point being, he was incredibly committed to exploring art forms like jazz and performance poetry. And a then-nascent field of synthesised sounds. Ten years after his death, Now Is The Happiest Time of Your Life gets a timely repress to confirm it remains his Magnus Opus. A brave and incredibly unusual collection of tripped-out folk storytelling, curious garage guitar stuff, strangely naive and innocent weird pop, and progressive rock. One to keep diving into and still find new bits to love.

Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. Violin virtuoso and singer Andrew Bird and Americana singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham shine a light on the underrated pre-Fleetwood Mac gem of an album, Buckingham Nicks, by fully covering it. Released five years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham went on to have mega success with Rumours, Buckingham Nicks was such a flop commercially that they were dropped by their label Polydor. But it is a cracking album and in covering it in their own style and having a palpably strong musical connection as a duo themselves, Bird and Cunningham have done it absolute justice and changed it. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

Review: Living up to her establishing name as a bedroom pop artist, Clairo self-releases her third full-length album Charm. Even so, following up 2021's Sling, Charm pares back Clairo's debut and sophomore records' successive pop sounds for a liver, perhaps more earnest exploration of indie rock and chamber pop proper, building on the themes of Sling, which also dealt in themes of of maturation and impending motherhood. Notably, producer Leon Michels of the cinematic soul moniker El Michels Affair claims production credits across the bulk of the album, suggesting new collaborative horizons for the singer. A collection of warm, psychedelic songs, echoing Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez, we hear an expansion in Clairo's sound and a move towards earnest and stoic grace.

Review: Hawaii, released in 1996 by The High Llamas, is a celebrated album that showcases Sean O'Hagan's intricate arrangements and homage to the lush sounds of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. This deep dive reveals O'Hagan's journey from his early days in Microdisney to forming The High Llamas, highlighting albums like Santa Barbara and Gideon Gaye. Hawaii features 29 tracks blending Moog, banjo, strings, and brass, creating a musical paradise. It recapturing the charm of the 60s pop era, with The Irish Times describing it as a tribute to when popular music was genuinely popular. Despite being somewhat elusive on vinyl, the album still managed to breach the UK Albums Chart, landing at No. 62. O'Hagan's influences from various genres, including orchestral pop and exotic sounds, are apparent, as he sought to push musical boundaries and create something fresh, setting the stage for a rich legacy in modern pop music. This reissue makes this impressive release available again.

Review: Megan Moroney expands on her critically acclaimed sophomore album with this deluxe edition, offering a deeper dive into her introspective and relatable songwriting. Originally released earlier this year, the album resonated with listeners for its honest portrayal of heartbreak, resilience, and the complexities of relationships. This deluxe edition adds three new tracks to the mix, showcasing Moroney's signature blend of country storytelling and pop sensibility. 'Break It Right Back' is a catchy anthem of empowerment, while 'Bless Your Heart' delivers a Southern-fried dose of sass and wit, while the closing track, 'I'll Be Fine', offers a poignant reflection on moving on and finding strength in vulnerability. With this deluxe edition, Moroney solidifies her position as a rising force in country music, her songwriting striking a chord with listeners who appreciate honesty, vulnerability and a healthy dose of Southern charm.

Review: Avant pop icons The High Llamas' founder Sean O'Hagan put his band on the back burner for a bit recently but by no means stood still. He's kept busy with his work as a film composer and arranger, even doing the score for Owen Kline's film, Funny Pages. But 2024 has seen a resurgence: the first High Llamas album since 2016 was released released and it was followed by a huge reissue announcement. Drag City is reissuing their five out of print 90s album on vinyl and Snowbug is the underdog within the collection but an underrated gem. It's O'Hagan's take on all manner of world-folk, 60s Ethiopian music and classic Brazilian pop. O'Hagan, who is a recording member of Stereolab, had an impressive cast of top players join in for the sessions. However, guest vocalists Laetitia Sadier and Mary Hansen from Stereolab are particularly noteworthy, bringing a bit of voodoo to the breezy morning-after vibe.

Review: Blundetto unveils a captivating folk single here that features the ethereal voice of French singer Juliette Magnevasoa. 'La Playa' is an acoustic-rich cover of Marie Laforet's 1970 classic and this rendition has a new vocal whose unique timbre adds depth and all-new charm. Together, the artists create a delicate harmony of softness and melancholy and blend soothing tones that evoke timeless beauty. Already heralded as a classic gem, this subtly evolved new version of 'La Playa' offers a serene and heartfelt sound for intimate moments.

Review: In December 2001, at Maida Vale Studios, Bill Callahan's Smog delivered a raw, haunting session for the BBC. Alongside bandmates Jessica Billey, Mike Saenz and Jim White, Callahan's performance embodied a Lynchian mood of U.S. darkness in the wake of 9/11, covering Stevie Nicks, Lou Reed, and Smog tracks with a sombre, tour-worn edge. Callahan reflects, "It's all live, no overdubs. The session felt encapsulatedisomething foreign, yet intimate." The band's reimagining of 'Beautiful Child' in a minor key, the fiery rendition of 'Cold Discovery', and the moving take on 'Jesus' highlight the raw, unfiltered essence of this live recording.

Review: The latest album from Michael Kiwanuka continues his exploration of soul, folk and jazz, with production from Danger Mouse and Inflo. Following the path set by his previous work, the album offers a familiar yet comforting sound, blending rich soul vibes with subtle jazz influences. The opening track, 'Floating Parade', sets the tone with its dreamy, nostalgic atmosphere, while 'Lowdown' - a two-part track - channels 70s Afro-rock with a laid-back vibe. Kiwanuka's introspective lyrics reflect themes of self-reflection and gratitude, with tracks like 'One and Only' and 'Stay By My Side' offering heartfelt messages to his family. Musically minimalist, the album emphasises warmth and simplicity, as seen in 'Live For Your Love', where Kiwanuka expresses regret and appreciation for his wife's patience. The album's standout moments draw from 70s soul and afro-rock influences, bringing a fresh twist to Kiwanuka's signature sound. Overall, this album provides a comforting, soulful experience, showcasing Kiwanuka's growth both musically and personally, offering listeners an intimate and reassuring journey through his life and musical evolution.

Review: Moondog's H'art Songs stands out as a defining moment in his illustrious career, marking the first release to omit his name from the title. Recorded in his sixties, this rare vocal album comprises ten art songs that deftly blur the lines between classical and pop music. Dubbed "H'art songs" for Hardin's art, the compositions showcase a musical sophistication that appeals to both pop and classical enthusiasts. Released in 1977, this collection enriches Moondog's eclectic discography, featuring mesmerising wordplay that conveys narratives ranging from political commentary to nature appreciation, all wrapped in poetic intrigue. Moondog's unique singing style, devoid of vibrato, allows for accessibility, encouraging listeners to join in. He intentionally simplified the vocal lines, leaving the intricate harmonies to the piano, which carries the melodic weight of the songs. This album is undeniably one of Moondog's most impactful releases.

Review: The Allman Brothers Band's final concert, performed on October 28, 2014, at New York's Beacon Theatre, is now being celebrated with the release of Final Concert 10-28-14, available as a 3xCD box set. Curated by Warren Haynes, the remastered recording spans 29 tracks and includes a 16-page booklet with exclusive photos and liner notes. The concert, divided into three sets, shows the band's extensive legacy, featuring classic tracks like 'Mountain Jam', 'One Way Out', 'Statesboro Blues' and 'Melissa'. Founding members Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks were joined by Haynes, Derek Trucks, Marc Quinones and Oteil Burbridge, making for a lineup that masterfully honoured the band's roots. The Allman Brothers Band's signature blend of southern rock and blues. This is a fitting farewell to their storied career with both nostalgia and exceptional musicianship. The final track, 'Trouble No More', closes the set and the band's legacy on an emotional note.

Review: Freshly pressed and reissued for a new era, The High Llamas sound as cutting-edge now as they did when they first burst onto the music scene as Britain's answer to the Beach Boys. The band's founding member, Sean O'Hagan, earned his reputation for pop classicism in the sophisti-pop group Microdisney, which split-up in 1988, merely days after opening for David Bowie in London. The High Llamas is a reinvention away from that sound, with O'Hagan having gravitated towards Baroque '60s melodies, orchestral strings, and vintage synths. They have a spectacular back catalogue, which includes a particularly fruitful period in the 90s, when they released five studio albums. Of which, all have been out of print for more than 20 years but are now subject to reissue through the esteemed Drag City label. One of the most sought after in this collection is Gideon Gaye, considered along with Hawaii as a high water mark, so to see it accessible once again is a joy.

Review: Laura Marling is back with her eighth studio album Patterns in Repeat. Now eight albums and 15 years into her career, Patterns in Repeat was written following the birth of her daughter in 2023 and finds Laura reflecting on her motherhood experience, as well as more broadly diving deeper into her reckoning with the ideas and behaviours we pass down through family over generations. Dedicated to girlhood, Marling's sense of perspective is noticeable here; we journey with her through the recognition of the 'Patterns' of life (having a child of our own causes us to remember all sorts) as well as the utterable reassurances, such as 'No One's Gonna Love You Like I Can'. Motivic throughout is the sense in which the experience of having children isn't communicable, because Marling herself is lost for words.

By June (4:37)
Review: Canadian singer-songwriter June McDoom makes something rather unclassifiable; poppy-noisy smatterings of sound and melody with influences from jazz, blues and soul, but combined in such a way as to not be as easily categorisable as that combination might normally make out. Her latest self-titled project here collects a slew of personal intimations and ballads reflecting a wealth of young life experiences, relationships and emotions. The extent of its sensitivity can only be sought in between the grit, as there's a deep well of texture embedded in every track, but listen between the lines (and take a peek at its collaborations with artists like Sufjan Stevens, Neko Case, Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird), and you'll soon glean a solid idea for its stated, romantic intent.

Review: This album marks the first time an Eel River show has made it to vinyl. Co-produced by Bill Graham Presents and the Hog Farm, this unique performance offered a refreshing departure from Jerry Garcia's typical urban venues. The show featured Garcia's quintessential band-Gloria Jones, John Kahn, David Kemper, Jacklyn LaBranch and Melvin Seals-and captured the essence of their signature sound. Fans from all over the country gathered in the heart of the Emerald Triangle for this historic performance which became an iconic moment in the Jerry Garcia Band's legacy. A must-have for collectors, then.

Review: The Corrs' Talk on Corners stands as a high point in the band's career, blending their Irish roots with pop and rock elements. Originally released in 1997 in Ireland and 1998 in the US, the album became a staple for many, featuring hits like 'Only When I Sleep' and the dreamy cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams', which is given a Celtic twist with tin whistle and fiddle. Other standout tracks include the energetic 'I Never Loved You Anyway' and the instrumental 'Paddy McCarthy'. While comparisons to other family acts like Wilson Phillips might surface, the Corrs' sound is more distinct, thanks to their mix of traditional Irish instruments with savvy pop production. The album was re-released in 1999 with remixes of tracks like 'What Can I Do?' and 'So Young', which added more digital production and radio-friendly polish, but many fans still prefer the original's organic feel. Now available on gold vinyl 2xLP, Talk on Corners remains a beloved album that shows off the Corrs' unique ability to marry Irish folk with mainstream pop sensibilities.

Review: It is always good to hear from Maya Ongaku especially when it comes to a new long player. This one excels at blending the ambient vibes of their previous album Approach to Anima with vibrant electronic dance styles. The result is a fresh fusion of hypnotic soundscapes and infectious rhythms with nice uplifting melodies, all complemented by delicate Japanese vocals. The album creates a shimmering, sincere atmosphere that draws on Eastern synth exotica that is both beguiling and irresistible. With its blend of lush textures and optimistic energy, Electronic Phantoms is a smart evolution in Maya Ongaku's ever-enchanting sound.

Review: Yasmin Williams' upcoming album, Acadia, marks her debut with Nonesuch Records and her most expansive work yet. The album features nine primarily instrumental tracks composed and produced by Williams herself. Known for her innovative approach to guitar, she also plays the banjo, kora, calabash drum, and even tap shoes. Collaborators include Immanuel Wilkins, Dom Flemons, Aoife O'Donovan, and more, bringing a diverse range of musical influences into the fold. The single 'Virga', featuring Darlingside on vocals and Rich Ruth on synth, shows her unique blending of folk traditions with modern textures. Williams describes the song as a reflection on navigating the challenges of being an artist in a world that doesn't always value introspection and art. The album as a whole draws from the idea of Acadia as an idyllic space for creativity and collaboration, crossing genre lines to explore new dimensions of folk music. Williams' unique style and imaginative approach has a vibrant, innovative sound. With Acadia, Williams continues to break boundaries, crafting an album that both honors tradition and carves new paths in contemporary music.
