Sons Of Ethiopia
Sons Of Ethiopia (limited LP + booklet) (1 per customer)
Cat: FRB 007. Rel: 30 Jul 20
  1. Anhi Bale Game (5:16)
  2. Bhta's Highlife (6:02)
  3. Tez Alegn Yetintu (7:52)
  4. Kalatashew Waga (5:28)
  5. Wed Enate (4:56)
  6. Samba Shegitu (4:40)
  7. Astwesalehu (5:27)
Review: Admas' debut album, Sons of Ethopia, is probably best known for "Kalatashew Waga", a polyrhythm-fuelled chunk of melodious synthesizer funk that was memorably remixed by Andras Fox back in 2015. Here, the in-demand album gets an official reissue for the first time since it first appeared on the obscure African Heritage Records label way back in 1984. The band's unique blend of styles and instruments - think synthesizer-heavy instrumental boogie, electronic Afro-beat, dewy-eyed AOR soul and cheery highlife - remains as alluring and surprising as ever. Given that original copies are almost impossible to find, this is a much-needed reissue.

The Mexican (reissue)
Cat: S71 3351. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. The Mexican (5:47)
  2. Theme From 'For A Few Dollars More' (2:17)
Review: Given the recent passing of Ennio Morricone, it seems fitting that we're being treated to a reissue of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican", a scorching funk-rock number based on the late, great Italian composer's theme from "For A Few Dollars More". The band's cover of that can be heard on the B-side, but it's the five-minute A-side, which boasts lyrics calling out the misleading narrative of John Wayne western "The Alamo", that you need in your life. Full of killer funk breaks that became staples during hip-hop's foundational block party era, plus driving musicality and some of rap music's best-known hooks, the track is still capable of slaying dancefloors 47 years after it was first recorded.

Party Rockers
Party Rockers (hand-numbered purple vinyl 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: 20207005. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Party Rockers (feat Ash The Author) (3:06)
  2. Batucada Battlebox (3:27)
Review: On the fifth volume in his 2020 Donuts series of party-starting "45s", Bristolian break-digger and beat-maker Boca 45 joins forces with Ash the Author, a Reading-based mic man who has been tipped for great things by a number of more experienced MCs. He makes his presence felt on "Party Rockers", delivering distinctive lyrics over a rock-solid beat peppered with tight scratches and moody, horn style stabs. Boca 45 ups the tempo on heavyweight flipside "Batacuda Battlebox", a riotous cut-and-paste affair crafted from Latin style drum samples, booming bass and the West Country producer's usual sneaky and inventive instrumental snippets.

Take You Higher
Take You Higher (hand-numbered green vinyl 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: 20207004. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Take You Higher (2:49)
  2. Hummingbird (feat Alison Garner) (3:20)
Review: Bristol beat-maker, break-digger and turntablist Boca 45 has released some pretty special material this year, most of it on the 2020 Donuts imprint he inaugurated back in January. There's naturally much to set the pulse racing on the series fourth instalment, a highly limited green vinyl affair that we think will simply fly out of stores. A-side "Take You Higher" is a bustling instrumental hip-hop number based around slack-tuned breakbeats, heavyweight bass, cut-up guitar riffs and all manner of cheeky spoken word snippets. Vocalist Alison Garner guests on superb flipside "Hummingbird", a hybrid hip-hop/bossa-nova number blessed with mazy Hammond organ solos, bold piano stabs and extra-special percussion.

BGP
Cat: BGPS 032YELLOW. Rel: 03 Aug 20
  1. Brand New Girl (3:39)
  2. I Got Some (part 1) (2:51)
Review: Juno colour vinyl exclusive ! Back in 1992, Billy Garner's "Brand New Girl" was unearthed in the vast vaults of New Day owner Dave Hamilton. He soon got it out there and it just as quickly became an instant deep funk classic. It was only a limited release, though, so it has since gone on to become much sought after and rather pricey little number. Now given a new lease of life, it sounds as vital and moving as it did back then, so is sure to remain a grail record for soul lovers everywhere. "I Got Some" (part 1) is less hard hitting, but strikes an equally impactful emotional note.

  1. Linda Lyndell - "What A Man" (2:41)
  2. Billy Hawks - "(O Baby) I Do Believe I'm Losing You" (3:03)
Review: This Juno colour vinyl exclusive finds Linda Lyndell serve up her own majestic cover of the classic "What A Man." Her vocal is smooth and buttery but also laden with gravitas, while the sweeping horns and jazzy keys all around her help to lift the spirits. On the flip is an ice cold slice of funk from Billy Hawks in the form of his "(O Baby) I Do Believe I'm Losing You". It's raw soul that glides at high speed with plenty of hip swinging claps. This is a much sought after reissue that will shift quick, so make sure you do too.

Stank Soul Edits Vol 6
Cat: BBP 174. Rel: 06 Aug 20
  1. Stealin' Alright (4:45)
  2. Stolen Nolan (2:59)
Review: Five years on from the release of the first seven-inch, Mako and Mr Bristow's Soul Edits" series reaches volume six. On the A-side's "Stealin Alright" they get to work on a riotous slab of funk-rock heaviness from the golden age of the sound - albeit one whose sweaty drum breaks, weighty bass and gravelly guitars also come accompanied by steel pan melodies. It's an odd combination but one that works really well. Over on side B, "Stealin' Nolan" is a tidy edit of another rhythm and blues style dancefloor workout, this time rich in stomping drums, memorable guitar riffs and stomping, Northern Soul style drums.

  1. Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu - "What Is Life?" (4:40)
  2. Pat Thomas - "Gyae Su" (Mpaebo LP version) (5:02)
Review: The tireless team at Mukatsuku are back with another of their carefully curated volumes of Original Ghanaian Highlife & Afrobeat Classics. This is another monster offering that this time focusses on two legends of the scene. ''What Is Life'' from Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu's 1980 album ''Conflict Nkru!" has next level brass and flute playing and afro rhythms driving you onwards. It has earworms a plenty and stays long in the memory. The fipside is a first ever appearance for ''Gyae Su'' from Pat Thomas - who was also on Volume 1. His version is jangly, full of licks and feel good afro grooves.

How Superstitious

How Superstitious (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: SSR 217. Rel: 28 Jul 20
  1. How Superstitious (vocal mix) (4:14)
  2. How Superstitious (instrumental mix) (4:14)
Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.

Apache (reissue) (7" reeditado)
Cat: UR 73807. Rel: 07 Aug 20
  1. Apache (4:56)
  2. Bongo Rock (2:38)
Review: Back in 2011, Shawn Lee recorded an album in tribute to the legendary Incredible Bongo Band - whose extra-percussive cuts and cover versions played a key role in the early development of hip-hop - under the name the Incredible Tabla Band. Here, two of the more sought-after cuts from the hard-to-find set appear on seven-inch for the first time. Lee's take on "Apache", in which Indian instrumentation, Hammond organ licks and a touch of psych-rock fuzziness are thrown into the mix with incendiary results - is a guaranteed dancefloor hit. That said, his "Tabla Rock" take on "Bongo Rock" is arguably even better, and certainly a little more revolutionary in terms of the sounds you hear. It's naturally rooted in bongo and tabla-powered funk, but attractively veers off script at key moments.

Zulu War Chant
Zulu War Chant (7" reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: 5BB 023. Rel: 31 Jul 20
  1. Timezone - "Zulu War Chant" (4:10)
  2. Betty Wright - "Clean Up Woman" (2:46)
Review: The 5 Borough Breaks series has long been a good way of acquiring killer cuts that have some way played a part in the ongoing evolution of hip-hop culture in New York City. The hush-hush label's latest release boasts the full version of Betty Wright's head-nodding soul classic "Clean Up Woman", which boasts a breakbeat that has been sampled on scores of killer rap jams. On the A-side you'll find something a little less well-known: "Zulu War Chant", a 1992 cut by the Afrika Bambaataa and Rusty Egan-helmed Time Zone crew. It samples the familiar groove from "Clean Up Woman", adding a swathe of well known rapped and sung vocal samples and a hard-spun hip-hop beat.

Getting Nasty
Cat: OTS 218. Rel: 06 Aug 20
  1. Getting Nasty (3:09)
  2. Getting Nasty (Conomark & Hong Kong edit) (4:23)
Review: A Black Man's Soul is an instrumental album by Ike Turner & the Kings of Rhythm from 1969. Turner wrote the songs with a host of other musicians and it showed off a side to him that hadn't been heard before. It was packed with traditional and simple funk that was as raw and lo-fi as you like, and one of the bigger tracks from it was "Getting Nasty" which has been synced to a number of films and adverts over the years. It's an authentic cut that bristles with gauzy textures and realness. On the flip, "Getting Nasty" (Conomark & Hong Kong edit) is more playful and funky.

Tonight Is The Night
Tonight Is The Night (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: MS 495. Rel: 03 Aug 20
  1. Tonight Is The Night (live version) (8:11)
  2. Where Is The Love (Disco Purrfection DJ Delight version) (8:00)
Review: The late, great Betty Wright sadly departed earlier this year, but she leaves behind a mighty legacy in the American soul canon. Among her most universally adored recordings is Betty Wright Live, released in 1978, and that's where High Fashion have turned for this full-bloom yellow 12" release. "Tonight Is The Night" is arresting in any form, but Wright's engaging intro with the crowd takes this version into a whole other realm. As a foil for the tenderness of the A side, the B side finds Ben Liebrand getting in on an edit of "Where Is The Love" that lets Wright's more fiery side shine through with a surefire floor filler.
