Daisy Lady (reissue)
Daisy Lady (reissue) (hand-numbered 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: BAB 009 RE. Rel: 17 Oct 22
7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" (4:11)
Blackbusters - "Old Man" (4:25)
Review: 7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" is such a special and in-demand tune that no matter how many times it gets reissued it always sells out. This latest pressing on Breaks & Beats is a hand-numbered and limited edition 7" that is backed with Blackbusters's 'Old Man'. It's a cosmic funk workout with some great synth magic drawn out and weaved into funky breaks with all the bells and whistles (literally.) But really that 7th Wonder jam is the one here with its pumping drums and lavish horn sections all making for a colourful and vibrant wedge of irresistible funk.

Funkin' For Jamaica

Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Soul Of Haringey (reissue)
Pip Archer - "Time To Boogie" (4:52)
Andrea Lyn - "Hold On To Your Heart" (3:32)
Jennifer Viban - "Miracles" (4:00)
The Curruthers Brothers - "What Do Ya?" (4:09)
Boss - "Ease The Tension" (3:15)
Review: A fantastic dub disco, funk and electro record straight from the heart of North London. First released in 1986, 'Soul Of Haringey' emerged as the sole release on the ultra-rare Advance Level Enterprise imprint, information on which is, even now, extremely difficult to track down and source. Among the featuring artists on the release are Pip Archer, Andrea Lynn, Jennifer Viban, The Curruthers Brothers, and Boss, all of whom are almost equally obscure, and only a few of whom ever went on to release anything else. It's these kinds of records, seemingly unassailed by the material urgencies of working life or careerism, that beguile us the most. 'Time To Boogie' is as raw and uncut as can be, its trilling synth bells and double-claps revealing some early stirrings of UK grime in the track's latter half. Then there's the downtempo soul of 'Hold On To Your Heart' by Lynn, as smooth as smooth can be, while Viban's 'Miracles' is an equally blissful prayer to the electro-disco-funk tutelary god, with its numinous snare bursts and adhesively soft pad divans swearing fealty to the belief in miracles. Boss' and The Curruthers Brothers' contributions are just as creamy, offering two further authentic, homespun falsetto'ers for assuaging heartbreak and redemption.

Bonnie Blanchard, Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "You're The Only One" (3:02)
Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "Right On Time" (3:30)
Review: For their latest must-check rare soul reissue, German crate diggers TRAMP Records take us back to 1969 and the sole single from Philadelphia outfit Andy Aaron & the Mean Machine. A-side "You're The Only One" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy soul full of energetic drumming, fuzzy horn motifs, inspired lead vocals by Bonnie Blanchard and sax solos from none other than Grover Washington (then a young musician and member of the Mean Machine). Equally as potent is instrumental flipside "Right On Time", which is a riotous funk workout that boasts more lung-busting solos from an on form Washington.

A Good Time (3:28)
You're Gonna Love Me (3:44)
Review: The Super Disco Edits stable returns to action with a new set of edits, two disco-leaning versions of B & The Family's disco classics. The first is the instantly recognisable "A Good Time", a disco bomb like no other and exactly the sort of tune that makes people think of the word 'party'. On the flip, "You're Gonna Love Me" is more of a boogie monster reinterpreted and juiced up with some extra electro power in its low-end and, of course, its chunky beats and percussion to create that added dance floor effect. Tha bomb!

One Of The Few, One Of The Many (2:29)
Review: The backstory to this one is great and goes something like this: Darryl Baalki is a reclusive person who grew up with his mother and his father's record collection. That was his only connection to the outside world and he somehow thought it was all the music ever recorded so for him to make something new he had to combine parts from it together. Whether true or not, his Flower Out Of A Stone EP on Deeppa is a sublime affair. It clocks in somewhere between deep house with serious jazzy chops and loungey downbeat, with the titile track boasting an impressively soulful vocal. Elsewhere, the organic instruemntation and improvsed grooves of Faze Action at their best come to mind, with sultry sax lines, spiritual vocal whispers and feathery drums all oozing a certain timeless musical class.

Organised Konfusion - "Prisoners Of War" (4:35)
Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

Stranger Things Theme (3:22)
Halloween Theme (2:41)
Review: They're best known for covering hip-hop classics in their unique, funk band plus steel pans vibe, but Germany's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band show there are spookier arrows in their quiver when the time of year demands it. Two special halloween themed cover versions grace this 7", the first a rendition of the theme from TV show of the moment 'Stranger Things', the second their version of the title theme from the film 'Halloween', originally penned by the master soundtrack maker himself John Carpenter. Both have a slightly cheeky, quirky and rather joyful atmosphere, tending more towards the cute rather than the spooky side of all hallows, but don't let their lack of scariness put you off, they're both delightful.010920

Nuthin' But A G Thang (3:03)
Review: The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band has become the latest jewel in the Big Crown. Lead by Bjorn Wagner, they have stopped several essential recordings not he label, all defined by their famous steel pan sound. Often they turn to covers of the classics such as they did back in March and this time around they take aim at the much loved and low slung hip-hop classic 'Nuthin' But A G Thang' by Dr Dre. In their hands it becomes something else entirely but still delightfully low slung and sleazy. This one is backed with 'How We Do' which is another loveably fresh sound.

Fisherman (I-Theme) (3:53)
The Daiquiri Diaries (Vintage extended) (5:01)
Awa (6:48)
Higher Still... (3:29)
Review: Reissues aside, this EP marks synthesizer legend Wally Badarou's first appearance on vinyl since 1989. Given the high regard in which the former Grace Jones, Herbie Hancock and Talking Heads collaborator is rightly held, this is undoubtedly big news. All four tracks were previously self-released by Badarou digitally, though all but his most dedicated fans would have missed them. "Fisherman (I'Theme)" is an undeniably jaunty, Caribbean jazz-funk treat in Badarou's trademark style, while "The Daiquri Diaries (Vintage Extended)" sees the great man soloing over a dreamy, Balearic style groove. On the flip you'll find the tropical synth-calypso of "Awa" and "Higher Still", a sublime jaunt into eyes-closed ambient territory that sounds like it come have come from Andreas Vollenweider's studio sometime in the mid 1980s.

Tried (feat Little Dragon) (3:33)
Tried (instrumental) (3:32)
Review: Despite not releasing all that much in 2018, Canadian nu-jazz combo BADBADNOTGOOD's reputation continued to rise. That was in no small part due to their eye-catching collaboration with Little Dragon, which resulted in the digital release of "Tried" back in September. Now the track has been given a deserved seven-inch single release by Ninja Tune. With LD lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano doing her best to channel the spirit of Minnie Riperton, "Tried" has a similarly languid, jazz/folk/soul fusion feel as some of the best works by Rotary Connection. BADBADNOTGOOD's admiration of the Charles Stepney-produced band comes through loud and clear through the choice of instruments and arrangements. For further proof, check the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Review: The queen of neo-soul Erykah Badu and the king of Chicago house music Glenn Underground together on one 12" was always going to be special. And so it proved back in 2010 when the latter edited the former's 'Honey.' It sold out in super quick time but now gets a cheeky one-sided hand-stamped reissue on yellow wax having previously fetched up to a hundred quid on second-hand markets. It is eight minutes of shimmering deep house with sustained pads and Badu's evocative vocals lighting up the beats in a sensual fashion.

Beautiful Birds (3:08)
Review: Following the passing of their brother and bandmate James 'Frankie' Boyce in Vietnam - founder and musical arranger of the Plainfield Admirations - siblings Jo Jo and Richard Boyce reformed after military service as BAGS with Glenn Goins in the early 70s, but only released a handful of 45s and madly these two incredible tracks never saw the light of the lathe. The 70's loss is 2017's gain as both finally get the justice they deserve on limited 300 copies. Fronted by Parliament/Funkadelic and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Glenn Goins, "Hey Girl" is a soft honey-toned balled while "Beautiful Birds" ups the gear for a pumping soul disco romp that's powered by triumphant urgency. There's lots to admire here.

Let's Stay In Love (4:07)
Closer To You (4:05)
Review: It may have actually been released in 1987, but this 7" feels like a time capsule to the mid-70s. Backed by her brother George on production for A.G.B. Records, these two tracks stand out from the rest of her debut LP with their classic, timeless charm. On Side-1, 'Let's Stay In Love' radiates a dreamy, mellow vibe. Bailey's sultry, soft vocals flow effortlessly over funky basslines and melodic organ flourishes, creating a lounge-like atmosphere that's both soulful and inviting. It's a track that oozes 70s sophistication. On Side-2, 'Closer To You', is a laid-back groove. With tender vocal harmonies, a lullaby-like flute melody and a relaxed rhythm, the song captures an intimate and soothing essence. It's a perfect complement to Side-1, a gentle yet relaxing listening experience.

Exchange Our Love (3:23)
Review: Self-released on his Bay-Del imprint during the mid-70s, and consequently languishing in the realms of the super-rare, Billy Bailey tells two wholly different tales over these two sweet sides; "You Better Stop" is an energetic funk workout with squiggling guitars, heavy-handed piano slaps and Bailey's ballsy vocals. "Exchange Our Love", meanwhile, is a yearning bluesy soul ballad laced with dreamy harmonies and subtle instrumentation. Don't stop.

Mercy Tree (3:50)
Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Closing the collection, there is a gem that features smooth, funk-driven melodies, topped off by a standout sax solo and a subtle British flair. This compilation offers a vibrant mix of styles, perfect for fans of classic funk with a modern twist.

Jackie Wilson & Lavern Baker - "Think Twice" (2:31)
Review: This must-check "45" gathers together two in-demand gems from the glory days of funk and soul in the middle of the 1960s, both of which originally appeared on the iconic Brunswick label. Side A sports LaVern Baker's hard-to-find 1967 single 'Wrapped, Tied & Tangled', a breezy but heavy chunk of soul rich in jangling piano flourishes, punchy horns and languid grooves, all topped off with a killer lead vocal. Turn to the flip and you'll find Baker's 1965 collaboration with Jackie Wilson, 'Think Twice', a heavier, funk-fuelled outing that draws much inspiration from classic rhythm & blues. It goes without saying that both tracks are essential.

Review: For a classic 7" that makes you wish you could have experienced the rock and roll and blues heyday, these two dusty gems by Lavern Baker and Jackie Wilson are a great start. Taken from 1960, "Bumble Bees" by Baker is a chiming, doo-wop sing-a-long love song with a tastefully disgruntled character, while Baker & Wilson provide the excellent and X-rated "Think Twice", which sings about taboo topics like cocaine, pussy and reefa. It also boasts lyrics like 'son of a bitch', 'I aint gonna kiss your ass no more' and 'I've had enough of your shit' - not to mention the other out-there obscenities for the time which include references to oral sex. Lil Kim and Khia - eat your heart out!
