Cat: DNSCR 012. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. Tyrone Davis - "Slip Away" (2:26)
  2. Gene Chandler - "There Was A Time" (3:33)
Review: Two much over soul vocalist from the North Soul era step up on one mighty 7" here with Tyrone Davis' essential version of Clarence Carter's 'Slip Away' on the first side. It has never been available as a single before and with the brass build and funky groove, it's irresistible. Flip it over and drop that needle for a different but equal good sound, this time as Gene Chandler builds a high energy and intense vibe as he covers James Brown's huge 'There Was A Time'. Sharp, driving and high impact, it's the second sizzler on this fine 7".

Soopastole Edits Vol 2 (reissue)
  1. Kool & The Gang, Gene Redd - "Give It Up" (DJ Soopasoul edit) (4:04)
  2. Aretha Franklin - "Rock Steady" (DJ Soopasoul edit) (3:30)
Review: Fast-fingered mash-up merchant and lauded scalpel fiend DJ Soopasoul can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. In fact, we've yet to hear an edition of his "Soopastole Edits" series that doesn't include the kind of sure-fire, party-starting fare guaranteed to get any DJ out of a dancefloor hole of their own making. Should you still doubt the validity of this statement, we suggest you check this timely reissue of the series' second volume, which has been going for serious bucks online. On side A you'll find a suitably punchy, funky and chunky revision of Kool & The Gang's Gene Redd produced 1970 jam "Give It Up" - the original source of one of hip-hops most familiar breakbeats - with a tight, club-ready revision of Aretha Franklin classic "Rock Steady" on the flip.

  2. Nickodemus, The Spy From Cairo & Gitkin - "Inmortales (Body Move)" (feat Femina - El Buho remix) (5:22)
Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

My Baby's Got ESP
  1. Four Below Zero - "My Baby's Got ESP" (3:32)
  2. Golden Flamingo Orchestra - "The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" (feat Margo Williams) (4:51)
Review: This essential 45 from Japan's Octave Lab brings together two essential productions from legendary disco studio wizard Patrick Adams. On the A-side you'll find Four Below Zero's 1976 modern soul scene anthem 'My Baby's Got E.S.P' (originally simply titled 'E.S.P', fact fans), a sing-along treat that arguably counts as one of Adams' most accessible and straight-forward productions (this is not a criticism, by the way, just recognition that he made some seriously bonkers disco and boogie records over the years). Over on the flip it's all about the Peter Brown co-produced 'The Guardian Angel is Watching Over Us', a rare 1979 cut that features a sublime lead vocal from Margo Williams. While not as celebratory as the A-side, it's every bit as essential.

Run For My Honey
Run For My Honey (7" + poster limited to 250 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: PHI 12. Rel: 20 Feb 19
  1. Run For My Honey (4:00)
  2. Run For My Honey (Lexx & Kejeblos remix) (3:08)
Review: For their latest trip into musical paradise, Zurich's Phantom Island crew has turned to debutants The Gagosians, a trio made up of former Soulphiction guest vocalist Suzana Rozkosny, A.C. Kupper (Guitar) and Kay-Zee (Synths). In its original form "Run For My Honey" is a slightly creepy but hugely enjoyable 4-minute chunk of no-wave wonkiness, with Rozkosny's strutting, post punk style vocals rising above lo-fi drum machine beats, surf-rock style guitar loops and elongated organ chords. On the B-side, Label co-founders Lexx and Kejeblos provide a stellar remix that drags the track further towards skewed, Balearic-minded electrofunk territory. While many of the original instrumentation remains, their body-popping beats and thickset synth bassline give the cut a whole new dancefloor dimension.

Searching For Soul
Cat: GSC45 19. Rel: 12 Nov 18
  1. Searching For Soul (edit) (2:40)
  2. Show-stopper (edit) (3:54)
Review: Galaxy Sound Co hit hard with two more edits. Both taking from triple figure sources; on the A we go back to 1968 for a chunky big funk fix on Jake Wade & The Soul Searcher's only known single "Searching For Soul" (which was famously sampled by Beyonce on "Suga Mama"). Bangini drums, horns, and a sweet bass line, the guys knew how to lay it down. Flip to the B we're blessed with the sweltering garage rock melter "Show-stopper". Powerful and sleazy; this packs a punch now more than ever, and just goes to show how much music was under the radar at that time.

  1. Legli Tumanom (7:33)
  2. C - Music (6:48)
  3. Wind Shaped Tune (8:59)
  4. Aerial Dance (6:19)
Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

Jazz Thing (reissue)
Cat: MRB 7161. Rel: 27 Mar 20
  1. Jazz Thing (video mix) (4:45)
  2. Jazz Thing (Movie mix) (5:03)
Review: Given that Gang Starr recently reformed and jazz is now all the rage, it seems fitting that Mr Bongo has decided to reissue the rare 7" version of the group's 1990 masterpiece "Jazz Thing". It's a wholehearted tribute to the greats of jazz - and the role jazz records have in hip-hop's sample culture - that comes in two distinctively different mixes. On the A-side you'll find the "Video Mix", a bouncy and suitably jazzy DJ Premier production that layers Guru's fine rap flows above loose-limbed drums, smoky horn samples and his own super-tight scratches. Turn to side B for the "Movie Mix" - so-called because it was created for a Spike Lee flick - where Guru's vocal rides improvised horns and an entirely different beat crafted from Kool & The Gang samples.

  2. I Got Some (part 1) (2:51)
Review: Juno colour vinyl exclusive ! Back in 1992, Billy Garner's "Brand New Girl" was unearthed in the vast vaults of New Day owner Dave Hamilton. He soon got it out there and it just as quickly became an instant deep funk classic. It was only a limited release, though, so it has since gone on to become much sought after and rather pricey little number. Now given a new lease of life, it sounds as vital and moving as it did back then, so is sure to remain a grail record for soul lovers everywhere. "I Got Some" (part 1) is less hard hitting, but strikes an equally impactful emotional note.

  1. You're Wasting My Time (part 1) (2:52)
  2. You're Wasting My Time (part 2) (3:46)
Review: Released in 1971 and written and recorded by Dave Hamilton (one of Motown's most prolific and influential session players), Sugar Billy Garner plays the consummate band leader over a relentless groove that rolls with drama. Billy gets sweatier, the guitars get busier, the dynamic gets heavier and heavier... So heavy it rolls into a second part. Primed for the floor, it still hits hard 44 years after its release.

This Love Starved Heart Of Mine (It's Killing Me)
  1. Marvin Gaye - "This Love Starved Heart Of Mine (It's Killing Me)" (2:44)
  2. Shorty Long - "Don't Mess With My Weekend" (2:29)
Review: Each release in Deptford Northern Soul Club's multi-artist single series, which gathers together Northern Soul scene classics and offers them up in freshly re-mastered form, has been nothing less than essential. Predictably, the label's latest seven-inch is another doozy. On the A-side you'll find one of the rarest cuts in Marvin Gaye's vast catalogue - 1967 stomper "This Love Starved Heart of Mine (Is Killing Me)", which was for some reason pressed in extremely limited quantities first time around. Over on the flip the Deptford boys and girls serve up Shorty Long's "Don't Mess With My Weekend", an insatiably funky Northern Soul scene anthem that Motown only ever released in Australia.

Cat: TR 286. Rel: 22 Oct 20
  1. The Hawk (3:03)
  2. Smoking Bananas (3:02)
Review: TRAMP Records' reissue output is so frequent and consistently good that each successive 45 is a genuine must-check affair. Their latest is an absolute beast, too: a new edition of a suitably obscure, impossible-to-find funk seven from one-shot outfit George & The Highlanders. 'The Hawk' first landed in selected US stores way back in 1967 and is a near perfect example of bustling, celebratory instrumental funk of the sort that makes you want to flail your limbs around uncontrollably. It's sharp sax lines and heavy Hammond organ licks are particularly satisfying. The band's organist comes to the fore on flipside 'Smoking Bananas', where wild solos and jammed-out chords rise above another killer, low-slung heavy funk groove.

Jealous Love
Cat: TR 272. Rel: 24 Oct 19
  1. Jealous Love (3:53)
  2. Beautiful Woman (3:18)
Review: TRAMP Records continues to delve into the archives of Tyree Glenn, Jr, a Germany-based American funk and soul stalwart whose musical pedigree is immaculate (his father, Tyree Glenn senior, was Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist). This tasty "45" serves up two of the four tracks first featured on the thoroughly obscure "Samba Oh Samba" EP in the early 1980s. A-side "Jealous Love" is a killer chunk of multi-coloured P-funk featuring gnarled electric guitar solos and lead vocals by Georg Hahn and Wayne Bartlett. Glenn, Jr handles lead vocals on flipside "Beautiful Woman", a similarly synth-heavy chunk of 1980s electrofunk that also sports a rather fine - if sleazy - sax solo.

Review: Remix time! Tom's Terisa Griffin-fronted smoocher "Magic (Spell On Me) from his 2017 album "Divas Got Soul" gets a surprise remix treatment from some of Japan's finest groove craftsmen. First up is the legendary Yuki "T-Groove" Takahashi, picking up where his remix of Tom's "Soul Life" left us, it's a full-on feel-good explosion that refuses to quit. Meanwhile on the flip, two King Street affiliates Guri Guri Boys and Fuminori Kagajo collide for more of a fusion-style piece where the live instrumentation is celebrated in lavish style. Stunning.

What About The Child
Cat: ATH 084. Rel: 30 Apr 20
  1. What About The Child (2:44)
  2. Now I Know (4:17)
Review: "What About The Child" by Avelino Pitts' obscure band GOLD has long been a sought-after deep funk rarity, with copies of the 1977 seven-inch single being extremely hard to come by these days. Helpfully Athens of the North's Euan Fryer knows the score and has decided to offer-up a much-needed reissue. The track is a fine slab of psychedelic soul in the vein of leading San Francisco groups of the period - Vehicle, Tower of Power and so on - with plenty of rhythmic shuffle and fine group vocals. Fryer has unearthed a gem for the flip, too: a previously unreleased cut that's on a similar sonic tip to Rotary Connection. It's worth the entrance price on its own.

You Are So Wonderful
Cat: OOT 007. Rel: 11 Jun 20
  1. You Are So Wonderful (3:43)
  2. Without You (3:19)
Review: During his time working at Jazzman, Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer tracked down the late, great Avelino Pitts, whose impossible-to-find mid 1970s work with Gold counts as some of the deepest psychedelic soul ever recorded. Here, Fryer offers up two of Gold's greatest, previously featured on a 2011 Jazzman compilation, on "45" for the first time. Both songs are deep, fluid, emotional and evocative, with Pitts' impassioned lead vocals rising above intricately detailed backing tracks that prioritise twinkling pianos, reverb-laden slow grooves and slowly shifting basslines over cheap soul showmanship. As a result, from the first listen you'll be hooked.

Drums & Steel Song (reissue)
  1. Drums & Steel Song (5:01)
  2. Sunshine Steel (4:50)
Review: Way back in 1980 Montego Bay outfit The Golden Sunshine Steel Drum Band self-released their sole, self-titled album, a fine fusion of steel pan music and reggae that has long been a collector's item. For those without funds to buy an original copy of that LP (second-hand ones go for big sums these days), we'd suggest picking up this tidy seven-inch single featuring two of its most celebratory moments. A-side "Drum & Steel Song" is superb, with the band layering hand percussion and ear-catching steel pan melodies atop a sturdy, dub-wise reggae groove. "Sunshine Steel" explores similar sonic territory and more than lives up to the promise of its title.

Cat: MSR 019. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. Baila Chibiquiban (3:08)
  2. Baila Chibiquiban (Tonton Boom edit) (4:15)
Review: Late last month, Matasuna Records successfully mined "Ritual", the sought-after 1971 album by Nico Gomez and his Afro-Percussion Inc (a studio combo helmed by Belgian composer Joseph van het Groenewoud), and reissued one of the standout tracks, "Lupita". Here they serve up another gem from the album, "Baila Chibiquiban", an Incredible Bongo Band-esque fusion of psychedelic rock, heavy funk and even heavier Afro-Cuban percussion. The fine original version is given the re-edit treatment on the flip, with Tonton Boom extending some percussive passages and emphasizing the killer groove before introducing some of the track's headier musical elements. It's the kind of rework that should find favour with proper break-dancers.

Review: Matthew Halsall's Gondwana label is seeing a busy August what with the imprint flooding our jazz charts with reissues and, of course, new releases such as this wonderful collaborative effort from The Gondwana Orchestra and Dwight Trible. Trible's voice is like silk, running up and down the delicate waves of melodies from the collective, with "Colors" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" both capable of making the toughest of audiences feel utterly uplifted. On the flip, "Love Is Everywhere" shines bright amid a flurry of flutes and intricate drum percussions, while "You've Got To Have Freedom" rides off a much smoother, deeper sort of vibe that's got a little funk at its core. Wicked.

Traveling Through The Land
  1. Traveling Through The Land (3:51)
  2. Stop This Fussing & Fighting (3:25)
Review: Cordial Recordings has dug deep for this third release. It comes from the Arthur Goodjoin-helmed Singing Tornados, a band that emanated in the 1950s and are still performing locally in South Carolina today. The two songs showcased here naturally come from their most hard-to-find 7" (an original copy would set you back a four-figure sum). "Travelling Through The Land" is an impassioned soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping sound of Detroit and the more orchestral Philadelphia International sound. Typically, B-side "Stop This Fussing & Fighting" is a more laidback - if no less impassioned - affair, with Goodjoin pleading for World peace over a sumptuous, slow and groovy backing track.

  1. Sitting On The Bay Banger (4:17)
  2. Fire Cracker (3:33)
Review: Last year Breakbeat Paradise inaugurated the Toxic Funk series of mash-ups, reworks and party-starting sample jams via a tidy seven-inch single from BadboE and Tom Showtime. Here the series returns with a similarly fiery "45" from Edinburgh-based DJ/producer Gramophone Soul. On side A he smashes together elements from soul classic "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", Beastie Boys raps and bombastic, loose-limbed breakbeats. The results are as effective as you'd expect (IE it sounds like a bona fide party-starter). Turn to the flip for "Fire Cracker", a tooled-up, stomping soul affair that stays closer to its soulful source material whilst also re-framing it a little for contemporary dancefloors.

With bands repping across Europe, it's a global groove affair as longstanding German funkateers buss up big boogie hooks on "Get On Down", Swiss soulboys Grand Mothers Funck up the tempo with the sweaty floor-focussed groove of "The Dog" and Nasa Funk fly the p-funk flag so hard and proud they need a new pole. Out On The Floor (reissue) (red vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies)
Cat: OSV 077RED. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. Out On The Floor (2:00)
  2. The In Crowd (2:53)
Review: Outta Sight has decided to re-release some of its most celebrated reissues on red vinyl "45s". The latest to get this limited-edition treatment is Dobie Gray's 'Out on the Floor', which was first featured on the soundtrack to quirky 1966 beach party/spy spoof movie Out of Sight. It was released as a single, too, and due to its mixture of Mod-style 'beat music' production and stomping soul sounds became popular within the 1970s Northern Soul scene. Here it comes backed by the similarly styled 'The In Crowd', which originally kicked off Gray's awfully-titled 1965 album, Sings For The 'In' Crowders That Go 'Go-Go'.

Don't Mess With GR
Cat: FNR 049. Rel: 21 Jul 14
  1. Don't Mess With GR
  2. Hard Way To Go
Review: The Great Revivers continue their unassailable 2014 assault on the record boxes of funk selectors everywhere with yet another killer seven for the Funk Night label. Brashly titled "Don't Mess with GR" may be, but this Russian quartet always prefer to let their musicianship do the talking and you can't fault the Great Revivers funk here as three odd minutes of prime dirtiness unfolds driven by a killer drum beat. It's complemented well by the more uptempo jam that is "Hard Way To Go" and lays down a marker for what to expect from the Great Revivers forthcoming album.
