Tomorrow Comes The Harvest

  1. Locked & Loaded (7:46)
  2. Altitudes (7:03)
  3. On The Run (8:07)
  4. The Seed (7:11)
Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Bumble Bees
Cat: FRY 024. Rel: 31 Oct 17
  1. Laverne Baker - "Bumble Bees" (2:30)
  2. Lavern Baker & Jackie Wilson - "Think Twice (Rated X)" (2:24)
Review: For a classic 7" that makes you wish you could have experienced the rock and roll and blues heyday, these two dusty gems by Lavern Baker and Jackie Wilson are a great start. Taken from 1960, "Bumble Bees" by Baker is a chiming, doo-wop sing-a-long love song with a tastefully disgruntled character, while Baker & Wilson provide the excellent and X-rated "Think Twice", which sings about taboo topics like cocaine, pussy and reefa. It also boasts lyrics like 'son of a bitch', 'I aint gonna kiss your ass no more' and 'I've had enough of your shit' - not to mention the other out-there obscenities for the time which include references to oral sex. Lil Kim and Khia - eat your heart out!

Review: When it comes to mash-ups and unofficial reworks, sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make for the most effective versions. That's certainly the case here, as Soul Mates main man Amerigo Gazaway crafts four slabs of funk/hip-hop fusion fusing funky beats with hip hop accapellas plus the all essential instrumental versions...only 300 copies. Ordinary Joe (reissue)
Cat: SEV 006. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Terry Callier - "Ordinary Joe" (4:14)
  2. Jerry Butler - "Ordinary Joe" (3:26)
Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Both versions are, or course, incredible.

You Got Me Crazy
Cat: POPC 155. Rel: 15 Sep 16
  1. Lew Conneta - "You Got Me Crazy" (2:35)
  2. Jimmy Rogers - "What Have I Done" (alternative) (2:24)
Review: The Jazzman cometh! Gerald Short's long-running label is back with a new 7" serving on its Popcorn subsidiary featuring the moody and malevolent styles of jazzy crooner Lew Conetta. "You Got Me Crazy" originates from a '57 45 on the legendary Decca label and was one of only three releases from Conetta. On the flip, Popcorn present an alternate take on "What Have I Done" by bluesman Jimmy Rogers which is so similar to the Conetta track the label suggest it provided the inspiration for "You Got Me Crazy."

Cat: SSR 220. Rel: 24 Aug 20
  1. James Brown & The Crooklyn Dodgers - "More Sex Cream" (Crooklyn Style) (3:44)
  2. James Brown - "More Sex Cream" (instrumental mix) (3:44)
Review: Earlier this summer, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul raised our temperatures by layering Wu-Tang Clan vocals over a chunky, funk-fuelled backing track crafted from snippets of James Brown jams. He called it "Sex Cream", and now he's back with more sickly-sweet goodness based around the down-low greatness of the Godfather of Soul. A-side "More Sex Cream (Crooklyn Style)" delivers a similar-sounding JB-inspired beat, this time peppered with rhymes from "Crooklyn". It works wonderfully, of course, as does the flipside instrumental version. Bare party-starting fun for funk-loving hip-hop heads!

Cat: MSH 106. Rel: 15 Oct 19
  1. El Klan - "Cold Sweat" (edit) (4:13)
  2. John Wagner Coalition - "Cold Sweat" (edit) (3:12)
Review: Mushi 45 is launching a new series featuring fresh edits of obscure covers of cuts by James Brown and the JB's. The first boasts two thoroughly obscure covers of "Cold Sweat". On the A you'll find a tidy tweak of a rousing, raucous and sexually charged 1968 version by El Klan, a Mexican band renowned for their heavyweight take on funk, soul and rhythm and blues. Over on side B you'll find an interpretation from the John Wagner Coalition that originally featured on their 1976 debut album, which unusually was made up entirely of James Brown covers. Their version is a little more laidback, with tons of spacey synthesizer flourishes, crunchy Clavinet lines and oodles and wild Hammond organ solos.

  5. Shy One - "House Party" (4:23)
  6. Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

There's A Man
Cat: SOUL 7045. Rel: 26 May 16
  1. Joey Irving - "There's A Man" (3:12)
  2. Just Us - "Have This World & You" (3:03)
Review: A stunning soul double A with a percussion heavy smoky soul cover of Leroy Lane & The Upstairs Maids' "There's A Man" and a big-swing, horn-heaved late 60s Motown-style ballad "I Have This World & You". Canadian soul act Joey Irving & Just Us only wrote and recorded a handful of songs and - madly - they couldn't get a deal on home soil so turned to Belgium's Baltic label which was usually the sole preserve of elevator music and native Flemish folk. Few original pressings have been spotted, but when they do they regularly fetch over L200. Jump on this.

  1. Isoul8 - "Just The Way I Like It" (feat Diamondancer - 12" mix) (6:44)
  2. June Jazzin - "Unfriendly Guests" (7:02)
Review: Now this is proper house music from the Noble Square label. Crate-digging veteran Volcon aka Isoul8 has linked with Diamond Dancer and enlisted the lush guitar of Piranahead to cook up a fantastically deep and effusive track that overflows with soul and spirituality, while the gentle vocals add another layer of cool. On the flip side, June Jazzin comes just as correct with a timeless broken beat track that glows thanks to the jazzy keys and bendy chords that light it up. Loungey yet heady, it's as good as it gets, frankly, and will swell your heart in two different but equally impactful ways.

Cat: JRC 7007. Rel: 30 Apr 20
  1. Flight #2 (4:03)
  2. Greddy Foot (3:19)
Review: Nearly five years after the first seven-inch appeared, the seventh volume in J Rocc's on-point "Funky President Edits" series lands. As with the tracks contained on previous volumes, the showcased cuts have long been staples in his DJ sets and should be considered "tried and tested bombs". First up on side A is "Flight #2", a shuffling, ear-pleasing affair that combines jangling elements from a semi-acoustic Afro-Soul cut with borrowed chorus vocals and languid, laidback percussion. "Greddy Foot", on the other hand, is a low-slung funk bomb -a slightly dubbed-out revision of a James Brown original with additional vocal samples from other Godfather of Soul workouts.

Short Story From Tabla Drums & Trumpet
Cat: JAZZ 45008. Rel: 12 Dec 19
  1. Short Story From Tabla, Drums & Trumpet (2:11)
  2. Oye Maia (3:01)
Review: Thanks to a plethora of pleasing releases from the likes of Nat Birchall and Michael Grossman, 2019 has been a vintage year for Jazzman's "Jazz 45" series. The last volume of the year comes courtesy of Jai Ho, an occasional studio "supergroup" who initially met by accident in the late 1990s. In fact, A-side "Short Story From Tabla, Drums & Trumpet" was recorded in a single day in 1996. The descriptive title is accurate, with squally, effects-laden trumpet solos riding a killer backing track of military style drum breaks, exotic tabla motifs and toasty double bass. The group met again for another studio day in 2003 and recorded B-side "Oye Maia", a wonderfully lucid and languid mixture of attractive Kalimba melodies, drifting trumpet and shuffling Indian instrumentation.

I've Got The Feelin'
  1. I've Got The Feelin' (3:45)
  2. Caves Of Altamira (3:20)
Review: The James Walsh Gypsy Band is kind of the outfit to go to if you're looking for some blue-eyed soul but, just like Ned Doheny and his sublime reissue on Numero, the band never fully came out of its shell, and were limited to just one album on RCA Victor, 1998's self-tiled LP. I've Got The Feelin' was recorded a year later, in 1979, at the legendary Muscle Shoal Studios, but it never made it out onto the shelves apart from a seriously limited CDR run. Norway's Preservation has thankfully done the right thing by pressing its two best singles on 7". The lead tune, "I've Got The Feelin" is a graceful, soul-driven disco bomb guided by James Walsh's memorable vocal chorus - a true LA kind of beast - while "Caves Of Altamira" is more sensual in its approach, but Walsh's inimitable voice still rides proudly at the centre of the mix. Two killer soul slingers - TIP!

Review: The Originals crew kick off their new decade with more red hot funk heat they've got us accustomed to. This time it is jazz-funk great Bob James on the a-side with "Farandole", a classic that has been chopped down the size for this 45 by the crack crew behind DNA. Flip-side "Lions In The Forest" finds DJ Muggs sampling that one and reworking it into a big b-boy tune with rhythms from Planet Asia and a guest spot from B-Real. This is proper heat for the floor that oozes quality.

Seven Day Fool/I Just Kept On Dancing

Review: Soul Tribe celebrate the epic legacy of Chess subsidiary Argo with two of the label's many outstanding soul burners. Etta's big swing sauce-pot number takes pride of place with all 55 years of sultry devotion still deeply embedded into the recording. Banks' slightly lesser known pastoral ballad sets up camp on the B. Lilting and lolloping with horseback storytelling, it's the perfect foil both musically and narratively.

Charged with a strong northern soul feel both "Keep Lifting Me Higher" and "The Sweetest Thing" lead with the beat as Floyd and his super-tight band bounce back and forth. Flip for more energetic mischief as "The Wig" goes turbo blues while "Sweet Sweet Soul" closes on an epic, riffy sing-along. The title speaks for itself.

Raw, to the point and covering a huge amount of ground, "Automaton" is an electrified hair-raiser that's designed to lift floors while "Nights Out In The Jungle" tickles the backbone from Daptone with its slinky, JB-style bass/drum groove and light rap/spoken word. Pure funk in both its original and most futuristic style... and on limited clear vinyl, too.

Review: Nu-wave afrobeat swingers, Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra, touch back down on Masamichi Ishikawa's Soul Garden, and they have arrived just in time for what we hope to be a blazing hot summer of joyful Fela vibes. In fact, these guys have cited Kuti as their main inspiration - which is always a good thing, in our opinion - and the title track "Bomb" is clearly of that ilk, unleashing a driving bass surrounded by wild chanting and a little disco sensibility. On the flipside, "Panama" provides a deeper, cooler edge that's much more in line with Kuti's work alongside the Afrika 70 band, with booming horns guiding the jazzed-out percussion. LUSH!

Review: Jarren hails from LA and brings plenty of the warmth and soul of that place to his music on this, the third rase from the already fine sounding Slices of A Dog. Mixing up deep house grooves, sultry sax from Jacob "JD" Crouch, oodles of g-funk and plenty of lush broken beats, this is a record that will bring heat to even the coldest winter night. Low-riding drums, cold analogue pops and hits and meandering top lines all take your mind away while the squelchy bass keeps your ass on the move. LA legend Bendek is the man bringing that on guitar, and label's co-founder Brothermartino on flutes also plays a key part.

Review: Southern soul star Jeff Floyd was just 18 when he provided vocals for this Michael Floyd-produced single in 1978. "Life Is A Miracle" was Jax Transit Authority's only single, and has since gone on to be an in-demand item amongst Northern Soul DJs, in particular. Given that original copies fetch upwards of L5,000, this Athens Of The North reissue is certainly welcome. Brilliantly, this pressing not only features the sought-after original 7" A-side (here tucked away on the flip), but also the previously unreleased full-length version. Predictably, it's a thing of great beauty, with Jeff Floyd's brilliant vocals soaring above a wave of undulating disco-funk bass, spiraling synth solos and clipped guitar riffs.

Cat: CBLL 031. Rel: 05 Nov 20
  1. Get On Out There (3:26)
  2. Why (3:51)
Review: Both of these tunes are from the early 80s and are somehow previously unreleased. Jay Stovall played with several bands before finally putting together Machine in 1977 at a time when disco soul and R&B were all in a happy and endless state of cross-pollination. That is embodied in 'Get On Out There', a killer bit of disco with nice raw claps cantering way over a strident beat that comes with a mandatory diva vocal. Flip it over and you'll find a much more sentimental and slow motion mood on 'Why', a rueful and reflection love song riding on lo-fi drums with gloriously soaring vocals.

Review: DJ crew Jazz 'N' Palms are probably best known for their association with Ronnie Scott's in London, where they can regularly be heard warming up for bands. Their new vinyl venture explores the more Balearic side of their musical personality, with EP one featuring re-edits of tracks often played poolside at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. That means a mixture of languid, Pat Metheny-ish Mediterranean jazz-fusion ("Coastal Highway"), Latin-fired jazz-funk ("Going East"), sumptuous Rhodes-laden soundscapes ("Chica"), humid Afro-Cuban jazz ("1492"), afternoon-fresh Flamenco-jazz fusion ("St Martin"), and the kind of relaxed, louche fare that Bob James would probably enjoy ("Strings of Spring").

Review: New edit label on the block Jazz N Palms is back for a second round of super smooth sounds aimed squarely at the summertime vibe. First up is "Latin Rollercoaster", a wonderful undulating slice of jazz funk that doesn't hide its chops where they've stretched out the groove but still flows beautifully. "Flying Over Corcovado" is a more mellow, string-swelling affair with swooning moods to make you all misty eyed. "M Squared" locks down into a cool, sax-fuelled groove that you could get down to as easily as kick back and relax. Review: Jazztronik is the free-form music project headed up by Japanese artist Ryota Nozaki. He has put out no fewer than 24 albums since his first in 1999, and in 2005 he put out Samurai. The lead single from that record now gets its own pressing treatment on hi son label and comes with two alternate versions. The original is a shiny, glossy and uplifting nu jazz tune with big broken beats and even big piano solos layered over the top. Some vocal ad libs add a contemporary edge and ensure the whole thing takes off. The Big Payback Volume 3 :I Feel Good
The Big Payback Volume 3 :I Feel Good (7" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: BUSTABROWN. Rel: 19 Mar 20
  1. I Feel Good (feat Busta Rhymes) (4:20)
  2. I Feel Good (instrumental) (4:19)
Review: The Big Payback series hits third volume and again bangs together classic soul and funk artists with hip hop giants. This JB & The Soul Mates take on Busta Rhymes. They layer up jazz-funk drums and synths into lively arrangements that are topped with sick verses from the master and plenty of James Brown ad libs also colour the groove. It's a high energy party starter, but if you need something a little less busy, the instrumental on the flip has you covered with its big horns and sax lines getting hands in the air.

  2. Donnie Moustaki - "Saturninan Beer" (7:39)
  3. Jehan - "Lady 2000" (5:37)
  4. Jehan & Donnie Moustaki - "Cool Man Nazz" (4:35)
  5. Donnie Moustaki - "Rock Bottom" (3:26)
Review: Introducing Deep Cutz, a new vinyl arm from well established UK label Masterworks Music run by 80's Child, the Warrington DJ who has played with anyone worth their salt. This first EP is a dazzling disco affair from Jehan and Donnie Moustaki who takes us into deep and atmospheric territory from the off with a lush intro. Moustaki then goes solo for the shuffling, dischevilled kicks of "Saturninan Beer", before Jehan's "Lady 2000" gets loose and lithe on some live drum sounds and serious jazz chords. "Cool Man Nazz" is a steamy late night collab and "Rock Bottom" is Moustaki's final solo cut - a fresh fusion of jazz funk, disco and house into an organic groove to die for.

Everybody Needs Lovin Nows The Time
Cat: FL 010. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Everybody Needs Lovin Nows The Time (3:23)
  2. Hey Look At Me (3:32)
Review: The tenth release on Fantasy Love takes us back to the Spring of 1978 and Miami Sound Studios, where Aaron McCarthy Junior AKA Jelly had been lending a hand with the recording of Herman Kelly's now celebrated album, 'Percussion Explosion'. 'Everybody Needs Lovin, Now's the Time' was demo'd for that album but never completed; instead, McCarthy joined forces with producer Thomas Fundora to record a tweaked version, featuring his own lead vocals, which was then released on the latter's obscure, small-run label. Here reissued for the first time, the track is a pleasingly celebratory slab of Miami soul that comes backed by 'Hey Look at Me', a sugary, eyes-closed love ballad with similarly fine Floridian instrumentation.
