Review: Starting 2020 like they mean to go on, West London's 2000 Black crew serves up an essential four-tracker created during jam sessions between regular collaborators Kaidi Tatham, Akwasi Mensah, Matt Lord and Dennis "Dego" McFarlane (Ranks). As with their previous collaborative releases, its' four tracks variously join the dots between deep house, bruk, jazz-funk and mellower flavours. As usual, the beats are tight and weighty, the musicianship exceptional (Kaidi's keys-playing being a particular highlight), the chords deep and the lead lines memorable. While all four tracks are excellent, our picks are the rubbery bruk-up bliss of "Return of Pastor Shadrach" and the sun-kissed broken house warmth of "Life After Subway".

Review: The Live Band, a disco-soul/jazz-funk outfit helmed by bassist and vocalist Kenny Chavis, released a swathe of singles and a sole album on The Sound of Brooklyn in the early 1980s. Perhaps their most potent track was 'A Chance For Hope', an emotive, two-part plea for change that opened their 1982 debut album. On this first ever seven-inch pressing the order of the tracks has been reversed, with the swelling, scene-setting orchestration and atmospheric field recordings of the shorter 'Prelude' version appearing on the flip. That leaves the main vocal version, a superbly soulful chunk of boogie-era dancefloor soul rich in addictive grooves, sweeping strings and eyes-closed vocals courtesy of Chavis, rightfully nestling on side A.

Review: The new joint on Wildcards comes from a hornsman sometimes known as Lucky Brown, sometimes as plain old Joel Ricci. He's done plenty of excellent work in the past, but after a few quiet years he's back in the saddle and this new single really takes the cake. 'A Thing Of Beauty' is a lilting slice of instrumental funk which lets Ricci's playing soar, and it's all rendered with a dusty, red-lining charm which will make it all the hotter in the dance as well as appealing to crate diggers hankering for more hot n' heavy grooves to sample. Speaking of which, the flip 'Drums Of Beauty' gives you breaks for days - B-boys and B-girls take heed.

Review: "Here we go again, yeah!" exclaim Luchito Rodriguez and Nestor Alvarez - Original Gravity's two core mainstays - who team up once again to evoke the undeniable spirit of a 'Boogaloo Party' for the ages. Channelling the sound of the inimitable Latin dance style, but also gradating it so as to be mixable in DJ sets, 'Ain't Nothing But...' delivers compelling call-and-responses and horn-swelling builds. Review: For the latest release on his admirably reliable CWPT label, Palm Trax has turned to Loket, the 'saxophonic alias' (in his words) of Berlin underground mainstay (and sometime Massimiliano Pagliara collaborator) Tahl Klainman. The four tracks on offer naturally put his emotive and entertaining sax playing front and centre, cannily combining it with all manner of stylistic influences and colourful synth sounds. He first joins the dots between trip-hop, dancefloor hip-hop and moody jazz-funk on 'All Ages', before opting for a smoother, sunnier and more bass-heavy vibe on the seriously summery 'Afternoon At Barenquell'. Over on side B, 'Sanders Groove' sounds like the missing link between DJ Cam, Portishead and Greg Foat, while 'Soft at Moonlight' is a skittish, up-tempo affair that defies easy categorisation.

Georgia Anne Muldrow. This welcome return to the label from Lockhart comes as a teaser ahead of her new album Going Forth By Day. On this evidence, it's going to be a real doozy because 'An Osirian Dream' is utterly angelic. The vocals soar to the heavens next to celestial melodies over a gentle rhythm. Also included a beatless version and a couple of T's takes which get more jazzy.

Review: Whether she likes it or not, Sophie Lloyd will always be known for the unfeasibly uplifting gospel disco-meets-gospel-house anthem 'Calling Out'. That was released five years ago and ever since, she's struggled to embrace it's shadow. With 'Angels By My Side', Lloyd seems to have embraced this, delivering another fine gospel-powered number that inhabits a similar sonic space while being different enough to avoid accusations of treading water. It's genuinely good, too, with Pauline Taylor delivering superb lead vocals over a hybrid gospel disco/stomping gospel sound hybrid full of Hammond organ licks, booming bass guitar, piano house riffs and stirring orchestration. In other words, it's another anthem in waiting.

Review: This is the first time these two mega obscure and super rare Northern Soul nuggets have been re-released. They were initially recorded at Edgewood Studio in Washington DC in 1969 by Keni St. Lewis who was a prolific songwriter who recorded only a couple of his own tunes. He as a part of various other groups like The Cairos and The Chancellors and this was his first real hit as a solo artist after he wrote others for the likes of Billy Butler, Gene Chandler and The O'Jays.

Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Review: Italian producer LTJ Xperience (Luca Trevisi) and fellow jazz-funker Papik (Nerio Poggi) join forces for a fresh new track here, 'Best Life', featuring the American singer Anduze. Recalling the classic sound of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, the track brings a hard-hitting verve to their bright spark, and does good justice to the trio's prior collaborations, coming hot on the heels after one of their earlier works was included on the GTA V soundtrack. Review: As they often like to do, Swiss label Burning Soul are dropping this one as this standard black 7" but also on these pages you will find a limited edition cream version. Either way the tunes are worthy of your attention from Luana. A-side jam 'Buckle Up' rides a judders mid tempo broken beat with funky bass and stepping synth sequences next to more pixelated cosmic keys. The r&b vocal is sleazy and seductive. On the flip is a trick with plenty of attitude from the vocal which is delivered with seance, control and determination. These are two standout cuts that blur the lines between genres to come up with something entirely new.

Review: We love a good backstory and Emmitt Long's 'Call Me' has one of those. Initially met with skepticism due to the lack of information about the label, this 45 raised eyebrows upon its initial discovery. With no writer credits, music publisher details, or any indication of its origin, doubts surrounded its authenticity but nowadays it is an elusive piece of brilliance that is not only challenging to locate but expensive to buy. It was produced by Charlie Richardson and sung by Long and pairs mournful horns with a longing vocal and catchy groove.

Review: This tasty 7" single brings together two stalwarts of the thriving Finnish jazz scene, namely saxophonist Timo Lassy and drummer Teppo Makynen. It's A-side "Calling James" that hits home hardest, as Lassy adds a snaking, alluring sax solo - all parping blasts and fluid fills - to a bustling, percussively rich Makynen drum track. Despite the fact that there's no other instrumentation, it's a genuinely heavy dancefloor workout. On the flip you'll find the looser and slightly more experimental "Yanki", where Lassy provides some free-jazz style soloing over a distinctively left-of-centre Makynen drum workout.

Review: Lovers' rock down the yapper. First released on the Brixton-based reggae and dub distributor Studio 16 circa 1980 - as part of a series of releases by the Love & Unity alias, an in-house project of producer Winston Edwards - 'Can't Let You Go' is a joyous number to jab into the dial. With singer Sandra Cross on vocals, we're assured "I am yours and you are mine", doulbing up nicely with the resampled voicemail that appears at the start - "I just had to call you to tell you that I'll never let you go." it's an expansively melodic sound, and well deserving of its new reissue by the label, who are still going on strong.

Review: Numero are taking a look through the cult Chicago label Magic Touch and dusting down some of the most coveted releases from their archives, starting with this smokin' hot joint from Light Touch Band. It's a record of two halves which kicks off with the laid back rap of 'ChiCAGO (Is My Chicago)', a funky-as-hell jam which pays tribute to the Windy City in fine style. The flip is the real gem though, as 'Sexy Lady' swerves into P-funk flavoured waters with dazzling results. The OG copies of this record were changing hands for crazy money, so don't hang around while this one's in reach.

Review: Take a trip back into the underground of early 80s Chicago and the raw, brilliant sound of the Magic Touch label. Numero have taken on the task of picking up some of the label's most sought-after jams and giving them a fresh pressing, and this sure shot from the Light Touch Band is a fine place to start. This is a record which offers two very different vibes depending on what you're after, as the A side slips into a feel-good, funked up rap joint celebrating all things Windy City and the B side takes a surprise turn into wild-eyed P-funk territory. The diggers and sharks have been circling this one for a long time - let it reach the people so they can all get down to the unreal sounds.

Review: Tucked away on Louie Vega's fantastic - and vast - Expansions in the NYC album were a handful of tributes to disco legends Patrick Adams and Larry Levan. This double-pack brings those tributes to the floor. Vega opens with his Elements of Live band cover of Sine's Patrick Adams-produced 1978 B-side 'Chimi', turning the four-minute cut into a driving-but-bouncy, near 14-minute disco epic rich in restless bass, attractive vibraphone solos and spacey synths. On 'Change Your Mind', which is presented in both full vocal and instrumental forms, Vega recruits the voice of the Peech Boys, Bernard Fowler, and turns down a sparse, heavily electronic workout reminiscent of Larry Levan's early '80s mixes. It's genuinely great, as is the DJ Spinna-sporting, hybrid disco/organic house cover of Adams' classic 'Atmosphere Strut'. In a word: essential!

It is presented first as a Les Imprimes remix that makes a devastating emotional impact, and then as a Surprise Chef remix which is a little less heavy and more upbeat, with prickly drums and uplifting energy.

The unique artists write both of the tunes included on this 7" for his "When Was The Last Time" album and neither has appeared in this format before now. Review: Vampisoul dedicate one more 7" to another fresh-from-the-woodfired slice of modern cumbia, this time from the eponymous La Cumbia Moderna De Soledad band and Machuca Cumbia respectively. On the A, the former band offer up a two-toning cumbia version of Rod Stewart's 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?', sparse but well-wrought in its sound. The B is a treat that vibrates at a different, but equally as effective frequency, being a convincingly retro take on the Bee Gees' 'Stayin' Alive', and lending the song's ineluctable melodies a Latin twist by way of hypnotic percs and guitars.

Review: Brit-boogie obscurity alert! You might not be familiar with La Famille - a short-lived group established by jazz guitarist Alan Weekes, whose members also included then future Soul 2 Soul singer Caron Wheeler and a pre-fame Cleveland Watkiss - but in 'Dancer', they made one of the loveliest jazz-funk/boogie crossover records of the early 1980s. Originally a white label-only release and near impossible to find since, the record has long been crying out for a reissue. It has all the ingredients you'd expect - squelchy synth-bass, soulful vocals, leisurely jazz guitars, drum machine beats and an overriding sense of musical sweetness - and is presented in equally essential vocal and instrumental mix variations.

On this latest 7" we're treated to Ron Foster's 1985 version of 'Don't Let Him Get The Best Of You', which was recorded with the 21-strong Kindred Spirits Orchestra and has been revived with a new vocal take from the original lead singer of Whirlwind, Sandi Everett. On the flip, you can enjoy an extended mix of Lee McDonald's 'Let's Play Luck', a disco-fied stomper from his classic album Sweet Magic.

Review: The 65th volume in Mr Bongo's admirable Brazil 45s series shines a light on Rio De Janeiro's turn-of-the-'80s boogie scene. On the A-side you'll find "E Novamente Mas Que Nada" by Ronaldo Resado, a five-minute chunk of samba-laced boogie sunshine that was originally featured on the artist's eponymous 1979 debut album. While wonderful, it's slightly overshadowed by flipside cut "Ginga", one of the highlights from Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti's sought-after 1982 full-length (which, incidentally, was recently reissued by Mr Bongo and is well worth checking). Joining the dots between synth-heavy electrofunk, horn-toting disco-funk and languid jazz-funk, the instrumental track is arguably one of the best Brazilian boogie records ever made. Don't sleep.

Review: As the Mad About label hurtles towards release number 100 it looks to the talents of Webster Lewis and The Spirit of Atlanta for two more fiery gems on a very useful 7". There are hints of Library music in the noodling melodies of the A-side jam 'El Bobo'. It has jazz-funk keys and organic drum rhythms gently tumbling below the Rhodes magic up top. The Spirit Of Atlanta's 'Freddie's Alive & Well' then picks up the pace with a more high-speed and 60s-influenced jazz-funk sound featuring some buttery smooth vocals up top. Two effective jams for sure.
