On the A, the former band offer up a two-toning cumbia version of Rod Stewart's 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?', sparse but well-wrought in its sound. The B is a treat that vibrates at a different, but equally as effective frequency, being a convincingly retro take on the Bee Gees' 'Stayin' Alive', and lending the song's ineluctable melodies a Latin twist by way of hypnotic percs and guitars.

Review: Fresh from delivering the excellent El U Vee EP, Make a Dance welcome North-East titan Geoff Kirkwood AKA Man Power to M.A.D Records for the first time. This time round, Kirkwood has company: Kenyan singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rapasa Nyatrapasa. The pair set their stall out on opener 'Lou Land', where Nyatrapasa's Kenyan vocals and percussion slowly rise above a deep, drowsy and trippy deep house groove, before opting for an Amapiano-influenced Afro-tech-meets-Afro-House vibe on the more electronic 'Battle Hill'. Make a Dance deliver two takes on the latter on side B: a proto-house style vocal 'Remix' rich in vintage synth sounds, undulating acid bass, drum machine fills and echo-laden drum hits and a 'Dub Mix' that re-invents the track as a hazy, immersive slab of dub house/deep house fusion.

Why, no know can work out, because it is such a lovely tune it would have been a real classic. Jesus, rerelease six tracks of his best works in the realm of bombastic hip-hop, rap, electro, cut-up, big beat and jazz. To illustrate the artist's sense of humour, Griffin's stage name came from a sermon by Oral Roberts, in which the televangelist claimed that a 900-foot-tall (270 m) Jesus Christ had come to him in a vision. Review: Freestyle take us back to 1984 with this fully licensed 12" repress of a vital bit of intense disco heat from Midnight Energy. The New Jersey outfit really get their machines working overdrive on the A-side as they bring electro-boogie funk vibes to a tune that is something of a cult classic and rather expensive to find in OG form. 'Front Line' is a brilliantly sleazy one with lots packed in and then the flip side tune 'Saving All My Love' comes in two forms and both are full of big vocal hooks and percolating funk drums.

Review: Dominican band Midnight Groovers was founded back in the early 1970s and went on to become known as one of the best around at what they did. They have a unique sense of sway and swing and cadence to their music and that is well exemplified by the A-side tune on this new 45 rpm. It makes for a double pronged attack on both body and soul. The flip side 'Ce bon comme ca' features an edit by Dominique Panolm, a singer-songwriter from Guadeloupe who keeps the energy but updates it with a more modern touch that is sure to ignite dan floors. Review: Japanese duo Milk Talk first released their single 'Wagamama Riso' as an afterthought to their recent debut album, flaunting an impressively sparse sound that only the most sophisticated of ears can achieve. Though not intended for any further protraction, producer XL Middleton nonetheless took due note of the release and immediately set about remixing it, recognising its headroomy flair and attention to minute detail. Now the original 'Wagamama Riso' appears on a limited edition 7" alongside Middleton's finished remix, which fleshes out the original's potent city pop minimalisms with a resplendent, gated-snared neon production style.

Review: Marseille's Mofak lays down yet another two modern boogie cuts for the fans. The titular 'Rock Your Money', featuring the vocal talents of Said (IAM) and Elois Scroggins, makes ample use of appended vocoder and telephoning lead vox; all comes wrapped in an ultimately bouncy number, against which Scroggins' vocals are stark. On the B, we hear 'System 3.0', a logical continuation of the A-side's theme, albeit this time gladly accepting the femme vocal assurances of AprilSoul, while Mofak himself hops on the vocoder; both paint a picture of a systematic love, one which cannot survive without vice and indulgence.

Review: Yuki Kanesaka returns with a delicious uptempo remix-cover of Herbie Hancock's thoroughgoing jazz patent, 'Watermelon Man'. In respectful contrast to Hancock's original piece, Kanesaka deploys a to-the-letter rendition of the original's opening Hindewhu whistle hoot - also heard on the mashup B-side - and keeps up Hancock's intended 'mathematical balance' with a nonetheless meatier, dance-ready EQ balance. Legend has it that this was Hancock's first ever song to be composed with commercial success in mind; we're not surprised at its continued proliferation, appreciation and reproduction across the globe - and now in Japan, no less.

Review: Fans of Tame Impala listen up, American Psych-Soul band Monophonics have released another 45 from their acclaimed 2022 album 'Sage Motel'. Frontman, and LA native, Kelly Finnigan is the conductor of this train taking the listener through a journey of Bay area psych guitars, 60s soul trumpets and Motown influences sprinkled here and there. No better do all these things collide than on Side A's 'Warpaint', the eighth track on the album and predecessor to Side B's slow-jam 'Crash & Burn'. 'Warpaint' is a brassy quick-stepper of a track, featuring all the hallmarks of the jukebox era as Aquiles MagaNa shreds mid-way through. The tumbling drums and big band trumpets give way to a psychedelic breakdown, before picking things up where they left off in a grandiose crescendo.

Review: For fans of 60s/70s soul, American Psych-Soul band Monophonics have released another 45 from their acclaimed 2022 album 'Sage Motel'. Frontman and LA native, Kelly Finnigan is the conductor of this train taking the listener through a journey of Bay-area psych guitars, 60s soul trumpets and Motown influences sprinkled here and there, printed on a limited swirled 7" disc. Side B's 'Crash & Burn' is the mellow ballad that succeeds Side A's 'Warpaint', originally the ninth track on the ten-track LP. A sombre, wistful track that sees Finnigan's keyboard skills on full display, the psychedelic elements taking over, having an element of St Vincent's groovy 2021 album 'Daddy's Home' in its warbling synths and hippie-esque percussion. You don't know whether you want to cry to it or get high to it, or both.

Review: Sam Don (the man behind recent lovers' rock and UK soul comps For The Love of You and Just A Touch) kicks off his brand new label Sweet Free Association with a reissue that takes us all the way back to 1984. The artist behind it, keyboardist and composer Carl Moore, only pressed up 100 copies of this when he put it out back then so it is a truly rare and coveted 7" that comes from a man who went on to be associated with peers with artists such as Phyllis Hyman, Janet Jackson and James Cleveland. The tune is an energetic and upbeat one with carefree grooves, nostalgia for teenage loves and plenty of great vocals from Moore.

Review: DJ, producer and edits maestro Oswald Moris spent 2020 focused on library music trawling and editing, following a welcome invitation by some friends to spend time at their home studio. Honing his then penchant for ‘70s and ‘80s library music, Oswald and company took this source as a starting point to jam and record their own personal interpretations of the style. ‘Drug Song’ and ‘Heat Haze’ are two choice selections from these sessions, both coming as notable reinterpretations of the saliently infectious numbers by Belgian library musician Janko Nilovic, who set the tone for library music’s crossover with soul with the album Soul Impressions. Review: The wonderful Mr K is back with more edit magic on his own Most Excellent label, this time adding his own spin to 'Wela Wela', a hard edge and raw funk cut from Black Blood, a band of musicians from central Africa but who were based in Belgium. This one was never a hit back in the day for some reason but is built on a killer groove that Mr K reworks and tweaks for more suitable dance floor deployment. It was formerly on his Grass Roots record but now makes its way to a handy 7". On the flip is 'Komi Ke Kenam (Fish & Funjee)' which has tough breaks and funk bass that will ensure 'floors get down and dirty.

Any self-respecting music head is well familiar with the Most Excellent Unlimited series from Mr K aka Danny Krivit by now, and the latest entry into it is another doozy on 45rpm. The A-side features an edit of the title tune from a 1972 Ralph Bakshi animation originally played by a top crew of San Francisco area musicians. It is a steamy funk workout in a Latin jazz style with plenty of reverb and DJ friendly grooves. Review: The state51 Conspiracy label comes very much correct early on in the New Year with this two-track grey marbled vinyl 12" in a fancy spot-varnished sleeve. It takes the form of two fresh Santaka reworks of original compositions by Rytis Mazulis and avant-garde choir Melos Collective which were first released back in 2020. Santaka, which means "confluence" in Lithuanian, is the coming together of DJ and producer Manfredas and drummer and producer Marijus Aleksa and here they layer up disembodied vocals and dark jazz melodies on 'Ramybe' and then 'Autoportretas' is a textural ambient exploration packed with fascinating sound designs.
