Step In To Our Life
Step In To Our Life (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: DYNAM 7062. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Step In To Our Life (5:29)
  2. For Real (3:50)
Review: When it comes to offering up seven-inch singles of tracks taken from classic or sought-after albums, Dynamite Cuts has an impressive track record. They're at it again here, this time mining Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson's 1978 jazz-funk/disco fusion masterpiece "Step Into Our Life". On the A-side you'll find the languid, loose and groovy title track, a memorable affair in which dueling vibraphone and trumpet solos make merry atop a head-nodding, toe-tapping jazz-funk groove. Flipside "For Real" is a little more energetic and loved-up, with touchy-feely vocals, husling slap-bass and sci-fi synths to the fore.

Kiss Him Goodbye
  1. The Belmont Shadows - "Kiss Him Goodbye" (3:29)
  2. Wilson D N - "Kiss Him Goodbye" (2:18)
Review: The first Premier League Pressing features one of the best known tracks in popular culture. The Belmont Shadows beef up an acapella version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' where you'll hear the drummer get wicked over cuts and beats from one of the top DJs of the west coast. On the flip, we have a tough breakbeat-heavy Latin version by Wilson D N that has never been on a 45.

  3. The Regulators - "Why Dub Why?" (2:54)
  4. Woodfield RD Allstars - "Soul Flute" (2:30)
Review: Original Gravity is run by label owner Neil Anderson, who has a tireless work ethic and superb devotion to ska, reggae, and everything in between. His love of boss rhythms comes to the fore once more here with new tunes from three pseudonyms - The Regulators, Woodfield Road Allstars and Prince Dolly - all of whom, in actual fact, are him. Regulators cut "Why Why Why" opens up with a heavy bottom end, "Coast to Coast: has a big organ led groove and "Why Dub Why" reworks the opening tune into a rocksteady roller.

I'll Be Loving You
Cat: OSV 172. Rel: 17 Apr 18
  1. Soul Brothers Six - "I'll Be Loving You" (2:18)
  2. Willie Tee - "Walkin' Up A One Way Street" (2:44)
Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

Deep Inside You (reissue) (heavyweight vinyl 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: LH 12078. Rel: 28 May 19
  1. Gloria Ann Taylor - "Deep Inside You" (2:30)
  2. Gloria Ann Taylor - "What's Your World" (3:54)
  3. Walter Whisenhunt Orchestra - "Love Is A Hurting Thing" (feat Gloria Ann Taylor) (7:18)
Review: Sometimes, incredibly rare and expensive records don't live up to the hype. We can safely say that Gloria Ann Taylor's "Deep Inside You"- a superb, disco-era chunk of sexually charged soul - is not one of those records. Very few original copies were pressed, which not only explains the eye-watering second-hand prices but also the numerous bootlegs that have appeared over the years. This, then, is the record's first licensed reissue. It's worth picking up, not only for the sublime title track, but also for bonus cuts "What's Your World" - a laidback, super-sweet chunk of laidback West Coast soul - and the lushly orchestrated "Love Is A Hurting Thing".

  1. Luke Vibert - "Africable" (4:38)

  3. With You - "No Resistance" (5:07)
Review: Beating Heart has shared the late Hugh Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Gives us the African polyrhythms via Detroit high-tech soul on "Kulira" while Los Angeles duo With You give us the sublime "No Resistance". Each 1500 albums sold will feed a school of 500 forever! Support a great cause and feed your ears with some wonderful music while you're at it.

Madras Express
Cat: WWRB 002. Rel: 02 Jan 19
  1. Madras Express (5:45)
  2. Stay-Pressed (3:13)
Review: Back in the autumn, Wack Wack Rhythm Band launched the WWRB label, in the process dropping their first single in six years. This speedy follow-up is similarly impressive. For us, it's all-about A-side "Madras Express", a speeding, funk-fuelled journey through meandering saxophone solos, punchy horn breaks, fast-fingered electric bass, spacey Moog motifs and all manner of layered additional percussion. That said, there's also much to admire about Hammond funk workout "Stay Pressed", where jammed out solos and lead lines come accompanied by sharp guitar riffs, Mod-era lead guitar solos and the kind of stomping beat that would excite even the most miserable of Northern Soul enthusiasts. It also contains an absolutely killer drum solo, which is something we at least can't get enough of.

Cat: TR 262. Rel: 21 Feb 19
  1. Tell The Truth (2:28)
  2. Because I Love You (2:29)
Review: Absolute scorching stuff from one of the most dominant gospel voices in 60s funk. Originally released on Giant and Calla respectively (and licenced, remastered and released with Shirley's total blessing), "Tell The Truth" is a raw bluesy workout with fired up harmonies and brazen horns squeezing every bit of honesty from our souls, "Because I Love You" hits with a little more soul thanks to the big backing vocals and added melodic layers but strip it down to the bare bones and it's nothing but raw, unapologetic funk... And that's the truth!

Huxley's Howl
Cat: FLH 7093. Rel: 26 Mar 20
  1. Huxley's Howl (2:51)
  2. My Blues (4:08)
Review: "Huxley's Howl" by Bay-area keyboard savant Howard Wales was originally released as a 7in single in the early '70s on his own Costal Records imprint. Luv N'Haight is proud to present the first official reissue of this classic slice of mid-tempo, instrumental funk, loaded with stabbing horns, explosive Hammond organ and heavy drums with a nice dose of psychedelic vibes to round out it out. The B-side "My Blues" chugs along at a slower pace, with a "bluesier" sound as the title suggests while keeping the same killer psych flavor as the A-side.

Known primarily for his work alongside Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia on their collaborative album "Hooteroll" while also appearing on the Dead's seminal "American Beauty" LP, Howard Wales had already established himself as a talented player during the mid-1960's working and touring with the likes of Ronnie Hawkins, the Four Tops and the Godfather of Soul himself James Brown. A true original and progenitor of the oft-used but mostly maligned "Acid Jazz" genre, Howard Wales paved the way for the psychotropically enhanced excursions of 70s' Jazz, Funk, Soul and fusion.

Children Of The Night
  1. Children Of The Night (Ryuhei The Man edit) (3:38)
  2. Children Of The Night (3:59)
Review: Japan seems to excel at everything and anything it does, including reissuing golden jazz funk. This time out, Hysear Don Walker's "Complete Expressions Vol. 2" is mined for the two escapist and mellifluous tracks that make up this essential 7". Ryuhei The Man edits "Children Of The Night" into a smooth flowing bit of late night and romantic jazz funk. It rides on a pensive bass loop and has a subtle sense of drive, while the slower original is that bit more sentimental with its noodling chords and more meandering mood. Both sides are pure winners.

Why I Came To California
Cat: LW 712015. Rel: 11 May 15
  1. Why I Came To California (4:09)
  2. Rockin' You Eternally (4:19)
Review: Released in celebration of Expansion's recent re-serving of two of Leon's early 80s albums - Rockin' You Eternally and Leon Ware - here's a delightful 45 that reminds us of his finest solo moments. "Why I Came To California" is a sun-kissed soul boogie groove with big horns and even bigger chorus. "Rockin' You Eternally" (which is, let's face it, one of the smoothest song titles to ever come from the 80s) showcases Leon's softer side. A ballad steeped in sentiment, play this loud enough and everyone in a five mile radius will stop and get smoochy.

  2. Instant Love (with Minnie Riperton) (3:29)
Review: "I Wanna Be Where You Are" was a song written by Arthur Ross for Michael Jackson in 1972 and covered here by co-writer Leon Ware. It appeared on his 1976 album Musical Massage, released on Motown. The album featured guests such as Minnie Riperton (vocals on "Instant Love" the B-side cut featured here), Bobby Womack and of course Marvin Gaye - who ended up doing a cover also. Not to mention the likes of Zulema, Willie Hutch, Jason Weaver and later The Fugees. Ware and Ross also penned the classic Marvin Gaye hit, "I Want You" several years afterwards, in addition to working with Quincy Jones and Maxwell. Ware passed away in 2017, at the age of 77.

  6. Truth (13:25)
Review: The music that makes up Harmony of Difference, Kamasi Washington's first EP of note since the release of acclaimed 2015 album The Epic, was premiered live as a "six-track movement" earlier this year. The "suite" - here stretched across both sides of an essential 12" - sees Washington continue to explore the idea of what it means to be black in America in the 21st century. Musically, the EP contains some of his smoothest and most laidback compositions yet, with all his musical collaborators being on fine form. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 14-minute flipside "The Truth", an almost operatic jazz epic full of swelling choral contributions, fizzing drum solos, rising horns and, of course, plenty of Washington's distinctive saxophone.

Cat: MEL 20. Rel: 04 Sep 20
  1. The Promise (3:52)
  2. I Found What I've Been Searching For (4:20)
Review: The considered crew of crate diggers and musical historians that is the Melodies International team returns with another vital piece that can make all out collections seem that bit more pro. In the spotlight this time is the gorgeous soul of La'verne Washington, who released this single, and this single only, at an unknown time in the past. The whole thing has been remastered by Floating Points and kicks off with the heart swelling joy of "The Promise" with its soaring vocals and rich musicality. "I Found What I've Been Searching For" slows things down to a more romantic and intimate mood, with lush chords and vulnerable vocals hitting a perfect sweet spot.

Review: Unadulterated sample gold; this is where the seeds of two of hip-hop's most movement affirming records lie. The NWA-approved: Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band's "Express Yourself" still flies quicker than Glasto tickets while The Meters' Public Enemy-stamped "Just Kissed My Baby" remains a lesson in slippery, sleazy but wholesome funk. 45s don't get more historical than this.

Cat: MSR 012. Rel: 10 Jul 20
  1. Let Me Do My Thing (3:24)
  2. Let Me Do My Thing (Voodoocuts edit) (4:20)
Review: According to the South American music specialists at Matasuna Records, Ralph Weeks' 1971 single "Let Me Do My Thing" - recorded alongside backing Los Dinamicos Exciters - is arguably the most sought-after Panamanian soul record around. As this reissue proves, Weeks' original version is rubbery, heavy and rousing, with the singer's rasping lead vocal soaring above a weighty backing track that sounds like a breezier take on the New York boogaloo sound. On the flip, Voodoocuts tools it up for modern dancefloors, underpinning his club-ready edit with punchy new drums that give the cut more of a breakbeat style swing.

  1. Makin' Clouds (5:14)
  2. Situations (3:27)
Review: When it comes to contemporary takes on '80s synth-soul and drum machine heavy boogie-funk, few labels are quite as consistent as Omega Supreme. The U.S imprint's latest missive is another synthesizer-driven revivalist masterpiece. It comes from Westbrook, a new alias of Venturi man Olivier Azemar. A-side "Makin' Clouds" is slow, spacey and atmospheric, with Azemar wrapping cute synth motifs and dreamy electronic chords around rich boogie bass and ricocheting, delay-laden drums. If anything, flipside "Situations" is even better. It cleverly alternates between spacey sections rich in high register lead lines and rubbery grooves that recall the greats of turn-of-the-80s P-funk.

  1. Right On (4:41)
  2. Doin' What I Wanna (4:07)
Review: Since launching last year, the Dynamite Cuts has delivered a string of killer seven-inch singles featuring sought-after cuts from fantastic old albums and this is another must-have along the same lines. It boasts two tracks from Clarence Wheeler and the Enforcers' 1970 debut album, "Doing What We Wanna Do", neither of which have appeared on a "45" before. You'll find a riotous Hammond funk explosion rich in energetic, break-driven drumming and wild trumpet and organ solos on the B-side, with the similarly sweaty title track nestling on the A. This insatiable number is altogether deeper and looser in feel, with tasty group vocals rising above bustling drums, warm Hammond lines and punchy sax solos.
