The track's infectious rhythm has inspired various reggae remixes but now it's getting a fresh cumbia twist. Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Review: At the start of 2024, The Canadian trio of Al Sow, Chester Hansen and Leland Whitty launched the Mid Spiral series as a way of focussing on new creative energy after international tours and collaborations with artists like Daniel Caesar, Charlotte Day Wilson and Turnstile. BADBADNOTGOOD returned to the studio with touring member Felix Fox-Pappas and Toronto jazz talents Kaelin Murphy, Juan Carlos Medrano plus LA's Tyler Lott of the project, which was recorded at Valentine Studios in Los Angeles. The Mid Spiral series first came digitally in three parts (Chaos, Order, Growth) but now arrives as a special edition coloured vinyl that offers up a mix of jazz roots with hip-hop, neo-soul, funk and psychedelia.

Review: Rhythm, blues and funk outfit The Blackbyrds were formed in Washington, D.C. in 1973, and as we have noted numerous times over at Juno, their music hardly saw the light of day around the time, save for a re-formation in 2012 after renewed interest brought their music back to light. The Washington fusion group were initially mentored by trumpeter Donald Byrd, but their sound came to differ from his sultry and slow tones, working in a more melancholic yet upbeat style, and flowery trumepeteering to boot. This 7" comes in stunning new vinyl quality, showing off a further two lost instrumentals, 'Rock Creek Park' and 'Gut Level'.

Review: Canadian jazz pianist and composer Paul Bley dropped this solo album in 197 on ECM, a year after he originally recorded it on September 11, 1972. It remains a landmark in ECM's solo piano legacy following Chick Corea's Piano Improvisations and Keith Jarrett's Facing You for the way it weaves a deeply expressive narrative and includes compositions by Carla Bley and Annette Peacock as well as Bley's own innovative reinterpretations of jazz standards. Tracks like 'Harlem' and 'Started' deconstruct familiar melodies into dreamlike abstractions and offer a new approach to free balladry. As biographer Greg Buium notes, the album remains "an imperishable gem."

Review: Blue Mitchell was a legendary jazz artist and a core part of the Blue Note label family. He had a run of albums in the 1960s that are said to be some of the best in jazz of the time but he didn't let up fully in the 70s either, even though he left the label. Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

Review: Seems it is time for this disco classic to get its latest reissue and we are always glad to hear it. It is a curious Italo disco gem from the rather mysterious Boeing. It came all the way back in 1982 and as soon as the needle hits the record it has you preparing for liftoff. Sprightly, funky and characterised by a classic, slightly trippy voice-of-god spoken word, cute synth squiggles and a rolling percussive layer that's almost too addictive. Comes complete with an instrumental if the vocal commands are just a little too much for you. This is a limited reissue on Full Time Production out of Italy.

Review: Once dubbed "the screaming eagle of soul", Charles Bradley passed away in 2017 after a late career surge that saw him finally find the commercial success that had long eluded him. "Black Velvet", his second and final posthumous set, draws on material recorded with long-term producer Tommy "TNT" Brenneck over the course of his career. Much of the material is either exceedingly rare (see his covers of songs by Nirvana, Neil Young and Rodriguez, as well as a sought-after funk duet with LaRose Jackson) or previously unreleased (see "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Fly Little Girl" and the never-before-heard "full band" take on Bradley classic "Victim of Love"). More importantly, it's all exceptionally good, making this a fitting farewell to Floridian soul singer.
